1872 he painted exclusively from and around the island he owned in Long Island Sound, he explored light and color more liberally than he ever had, his attention confined daily to the uninflected contours of the water and coastal topography.

I see a syndicated development consortium exploiting over a billion and a half dollars in forest products. I see a paper mill and if the strategic metals are there, a mining operation. A greenbelt between the condos on the lake and a waste management facility focusing on the newest rage in toxic waste, medical refuse. Infected bandages, body parts, IV tubing, contaminated glassware, entrails, syringes, fluids, blood, low grade radioactive waste all safely contained sunken in the lake and sealed for centuries. I wasn't invited to view the half-and-half in question ("Here! Taste this!"), but it's well-known that the higher butterfat dairy products last much better than skim and 1%. The fat will come out of suspension in half-and-half and give you a solid week of warning that it's getting there. Usually a quick stir makes any appearance of spoilage vanish. No reason to have your day ruined.

Twilight on the Sound, Darien, Connecticut (1872)
John Frederick Kensett There is an interesting few minutes as the sun approaches the horizon and then slides below it. Because the light is highly directional, foreground objects slide deeper into shadow while the sky the near the horizon increasingly saturates in color as the sunlight is penetrating the low sky horizontally. Meanwhile the high sky is increasingly heading into to a deep blue that an hour will be black. Photography is uniquely suited to capture these transient changes while painting depends on the memory and skill of the painter to immortalize these ephemeral changes. Toss in a 2:1 aspect ratio that approximates the field of view of human vision, something exploited later in cinema, and you get a lovely seascape/landscape. This time of day is one of my favorite times to be out with a still camera photographing the land. Looking carefully at the land then can be a profoundly meditative time and that I have found it often to be far more rewarding than the actual images captured. Would hang.
