72 I admit being VERY surprised last year in Japan the incredible antiquity of computers being used. A resale store had a whole double shelf of 1990s vintage computers for actual unironic sale, not as 'antiques'.
These were towers and laptops that would here have been junked at least 20 years ago. Many retail stores weren't any different, with point of sale computers I haven't seen in commercial use in decades.

There are watches you can buy that will let you track *three* time zones at a glance. Lovely things, but I haven't traveled out of the Central time zone in years. Perhaps if I move to Indiana, which is split between Eastern and Central, I'll consider a watch that will remind me of that fact.

Hello to you, JQ! Yes, the late Marie-Antoinette, smartest cat I've ever known, would throw herself into my lap each evening and work my arm. Fortunately her front claws were just a memory, so it didn't hurt. A couple of my other cats were into it. The Siberians I've known, none of them have done it. Maybe they got it out of their systems because they lived with their mothers and littermates long enough before coming to live with me.

105 Mom had a sundial in the yard. Dad kept it all those years after she died.

After Dad died, I let my sister take the sundial. I was really hoping she didn't want it, but.... *sigh* she was closer to Mom than I ever was, and she received little else, since Dad mostly gave Mom's stuff to his subsequent girlfriend... so, she took it. It went to a good home.

I will find a nice sundial for my own yard.

I seem to recall a detail in ancient Roman history. Someone in Rome was given a sundial in Sicily, or maybe he captured it in Punic War II and took it home. He complained it never showed the right time. He failed to realize that the latitudes of Rome and Sicily are different and so the heights of the sun in the sky, at the same time of day and year, would be different.

118 On Grit, Kenny Rogers is in a 1993 movie called Rio Diablo, playing . . . not The Gambler, but a tough bounty hunter. I just watched a tense scene where he has two criminals at gunpoint, and he's very convincing. According to the capsule description, Travis Tritt is in it too, along with Stacy Keach. I'd never heard of this film. A TV-movie, I'd guess?

Excellent point, Wolfus. Mom's sundial was just a commercial one-- not latitude-specific-- but a very nice product with an inscription:

"Grow old along with me, the best is yet to be"

And she lovingly placed it near some rose bushes that Dad had given her.

Prayerful... Had not thought of it that way. There is someone I really very much would like to meet in real life. But my time is running out. It's not final chapter, but getting closer - like in a book where you can see the ending by the number of pages remaining and it's not very thick. In my own way I've said both hello and goodbye to her. It's quite the story of a blue collar town in the 70's along the side of a river and the morality of the people who once attended one of the nine churches on the side of a hillside, but now over time, only three remain.

So the song speaks to me.

This friend came from that same blue collar town along the river with the nine churches. In a way his story is my story, too.

Except there is no DNA evidence for me, only a hunch and a stack of circumstantial evidence three inches tall. So I wait... while the tide waits for me.

This is one of those things were there are too many factors at play to calculate, figure 500-2000 per tree, depending on the size and location.

Stump grinding and hauling away the trunks is more than likely extra.

UPS has a scan of it arriving at the processing facility about six miles up the same road from the scheduled delivery point.

But no scan of it's placement on the package car that morning, nor a delivery scan.

BUT, I did get a phone call from the facility telling me that the driver did deliver it that morning.

Unfortunately, the regular driver for the delivery location arrives there in the afternoon, and already said he never had the package on his truck

Blacks were never used as general purpose labor, they were used exclusively as farm and agrarian labor, and by 1860 were only in 15 of the 33 states and 9 territories.

So this idea that they built this country is nonsense.

Harvard University Health Services (HUHS) will no longer require students to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.

We strongly recommend that all members of the Harvard community stay up-to-date on COVID-19 vaccines, including boosters if eligible. Additionally, we continue to emphasize the benefits of wearing a high-quality face mask in crowded indoor settings and remaining at home if unwell.

It may not be stock any longer, but you can have it done at a tint shop. I had a strip installed on my '11 Regal, would have done it on my '15 BMW, and want to have it for the LaCrosse. Just haven't got to it. It's legal here in Lousy-ana; I don't know if other states disallow it.

302 236 Biden Administration consulted Israel expert on how to 'force the Netanyahu coalition to collapse'

Biden and Blinken have been trying to launch a "color revolution" in Israel since late last year. Funny thing is their attempts keep failing, for two main reasons. 1) about 80% (at least) of Israeli citizens now say that this war MUST go on until Hamas is completely destroyed; no new government can change that, and 2) every time Biden and Qatar come up with some grand bargain ceasefire Hamas jumps out of its hole for a second and shrieks "No Ceasefire! No Deals! No hostages for you! ALLAHU AKHBAR!!!" and kills all their efforts.

Biden and Blinken are trying to push Benny Gantz into being their hit man. I don't think he can do it.

Seems like if hiring is restricted to female legal citizens and immigrant workers, but you can not fill the demand, then you would default to removing the sex-of-employee requirement and go with a general hiring of qualified citizens and legal residents.

Not jump directly to illegal aliens.

Unless that is the goal.

306 Several months ago I cleared a half acre, and hired a tree service contractor we trust to do it all with a crane saw. There were three dozen trees, from large scrub growth to several rangy forest giants. Cost including stump grinding (and a couple of removals) was $11,000. That did include a few extras, like sectioning the black walnuts to 8' and loading them onto my truck, gently. There was also an anaconda-like creeper with an 8" 'trunk' wrapped around a white pine I wanted to save -- some hand work was involved in that, but nobody on the crew actually climbed a tree. Logging has changed.

He set up the truck and outriggers in the middle of the plot and worked everything from that spot. The crane can reach 90 feet. I wonder a little why all the equipment is made in Europe.

309 Mark Ferrari, a digital artist, apparently worked for LucasArts for their various adventure games and for the recentish Thimbleeeed Park.

He did an hour long talk somewhere, possibly TED, discussing pixel art back in the day, and the tricks and techniques used. One of the more interesting techniques was palette-shifting - 256 slots (8-bit), but a larger range of colors to fit them into.

And he demonstrated animation - flowing water, night/day cycles, rain. Simply by altering the colors in the bit-buckets. And a trick for some 16-bit console where a forest suddenly became the sky, using the same image but carefully handling those slots. After all, slots #100, #152, and #154 will look the same if you set them all to Emerald Green, right?
