Two of the talents from Prism Generation 7 mentioned in streams today that there were three thousand people auditioning for just three spots in their small vtuber agency. Why do it? Why try so hard? Because if you do make it into the big leagues, stuff like this can happen: Mumei offered to hand-draw the avatars of anyone who sent in a donation of $50 or more. (After YouTube and Hololive, but before taxes, she keeps about a third of that.) She opened donations for one minute. She got $27,000. Disclaimer: And RSI after 40 hours of nonstop drawing. Speaking of helium deposits, that came up last thread. There are some videos on youtube of the liquid helium phase transition to a superfluid. This is Helium-4 isotope. There were some good ones, I remember, but all I could find easily was this one, some dude with a man-bun showing the process of pumping down (evaporative cooling) liquid He-4 through the lamba transition to the superfluid state: https://tinyurl.com/2x6x9o7q I expect a "sciencey" video narrator to be a bit strange and quirky. But a man-bun is a bridge too far. A bow tie, sure, but no man-bun. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at March 03, 2024 04:12 AM (w6EFb) 7

Superfluids take the "seeking their own level" to the extreme. A superfluid would climb Mt. Everest simply to get to a 1mm lower level. A superfluid will not stay put in a container. It simply climbs up the edges to flow down the outside and get to a lower level. Say a glass of water was a superfluid. It would climb up over the sides of the glass or cup and run down into a puddle on the floor. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at March 03, 2024 04:16 AM (w6EFb) 10

Posted by: Or Something There is definitely a lot of that in the broader vtuber space, though Hololive EN doesn't chase after that market. Mumei is a pretty good artist, and she's also unpredictable. You might get a cute cartoon, or a scientifically precise ornithological illustration, or a Lovecraftian horror, as the mood strikes her. So this was largely a case of "Fifty bucks? Sure, surprise me." Followed by "Uh, yeah, I'm surprised alright." Posted by: Pixy Misa at March 03, 2024 05:00 AM (BLOW1) 17

There is a limit to how high a superfluid can climb to get to a lower level. This involves a lot of complex physics. I can't explain it. Mr. Feynman and some others could, of course, and could make it really simple sounding. I cannot. If there is no gravitational field (or acceleration field, per the Equivalence Principle) there is no climbing, as there is no "up" to climb. It all works out, trust me. Physics holds. There is no violation of the Laws of Physics with Superfluids. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at March 03, 2024 05:10 AM (w6EFb) 20

A superfluid is sort of like a superconductor. In a superconductor, electrical resistance goes to zero (but yet, this not the "perfect conductor" -- again, Mr. Feynman could Feynman 'splain (orders of magnitude above man-splaining)). In a superfluid, viscosity, or resistance to flow, goes to zero. That Feynman-splains the climbing of the walls to get to a lower level. Mr. Feynman, were he alive, could Feynman-splain all that, and make it seem so simple, even AOC or perhaps Kamala Harris, could understand it. Evening and morning to the early prowlers! Slept pretty good; it's 63 F. out of doors with little wind and no rain. Dampish, at 100% humidity, but what else is new here. Good morning for a workout. Once I get some coffee inside me, of course. And feed the beasts.

Why does everybody on The Invaders (on MeTV right now) look sunburned or flushed from fever? Not just the aliens, but David Vincent, Katherine Justice, and everybody. Is it the prints MeTV uses, or did Quinn Martin & Co. deliberately tint everything a little redder to induce a disturbing quality to the show? If so, it works, QM. It does.
Yes, this is 1967 color, but other shows from that time like Trek, Time Tunnel, U.N.C.L.E., and Batman don't have people who look so reddish. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at March 03, 2024 05:38 AM (omVj0) 29

I think Quinn Martin, QM, holds a record of the most TV series in the Top 10, or Top 20 or whatever, for over 20 years years running. Ol' Quinn knew what he was doing. If he wanted to make his characters red-shifted, there was a good reason. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at March 03, 2024 05:53 AM (w6EFb) 33

Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy at March 03, 2024 *** Since other shows of that time, many of which have been remastered, don't show this phenomenon, I guess The Invaders hasn't received that treatment. It's odd to see in that other colors on the screen don't look red-tinted, just people's skin. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at March 03, 2024 05:57 AM (omVj0) 37

"University of Maryland political science professor Thomas Schaller and op-ed writer Paul Waldman were in MSNBC's "Morning Joe" studio to promote their new book titled, "White Rural Rage: The Threat to American Democracy". They repeatedly called Whites in the countryside and across the land "racist" and "anti-democracy".
"They are the most racist, xenophobic, anti-immigrant, anti-gay, geodemographic group in the country," Schaller said. "Second, they're the most conspiracist group. QAnon support and subscribers, election denialism, COVID denialism instead of scientific skepticism, Obama birtherism." So all that... applied to an entire race of people living in rural areas." And the response to this is going to be: "Nuh uh! We are not ALL racists and transphobes!" Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy at March 03, 2024 06:19 AM (N3GIM) 42
