3 I picked up a bunch of trash near our entrance road. Someone in the neighborhood drinks Capt. Morgan and tosses the empties in the trees.

My back hurts but no litter on the drive up to our street. So I got thaqt going for me.

4 May have to break out the spiles and buckets plus open the fire pit if this coming week pans out. The temps are prime for sap flow, you can get a decent start on product early on before the sap sours off and slows down. Need someone to provide some motivation here. The older I get the harder it is to get cranked up, sugaring off is a shit load of work. Mine is a one man op so no help is available (this is only a family based thing) I have no current interest in a commercial operation.

13 Not really a hobby, but I have been consumed by a true-crime podcast. My longtime friend (a podcaster) is definitely unpopular among the regular viewers of the case. I am blocking/hiding commenters for hours every night he goes Live. He's going Live tonight, I have my "edibles" ready to get me through it.
I have no idea if my friend is right or wrong about the case, but the a-holes who disagree with him do all the dirty tricks from years ago. Doxxing him, placing fake food orders, placing harassing phone calls to his elderly parents, all the childish nasty shit. It's a Massachusetts case, so everyone involved is an asshole (I can say that, I'm originally from Mass.)

15 Thanks for including those videos on making your own pocket notebooks and starting drawing after 40.

I've used some of the techniques suggested by the guy who does the Sketchbook Skool YT videos. His approach really is helpful and the benefits he discusses in this one are legit.

I'll have to watch the video about making the notebooks. It would be fun and satisfying and I go through a LOT of little notebooks. They are by my two easy chairs, in the car, on the night stand and on the dining room table. I could use paper appropriate for art for little sketchbooks. For almost 40 years I've carried a leather Levenger International Pocket Briefcase in my breast pocket. It holds index cards, a pen or pencil, emergency cash, and lists of books I want to look for when I go to the used book store. I got a backup one in case this one falls apart but after all these decades it shows use but is perfectly sound like some of my muzzleloaders.

18 I enjoy watching the YouTube channel Men at Arms by Baltimore Knife and Sword. I find sword making fascinating.
It is not, however, hobby material because I will never have a forge or a hydraulic hammer and I'm too old and fat to swing a sledge hammer but the skills amaze me.

19 Hah, a quiet day free of grandkids allows me to unlock the THIRD AoSHQ thread.

Many years ago, I made the decision to "de-GWify" my Warhammer 40k holdings as much as possible. That is, if I could find cheaper alternatives, that's what I would do. Also, I only play the 2nd edition of the game, so less factions. To that end, I sold off my Imperial Guard and replaced them with 25mm WW II Germans and a few Soviets. They work very well, though I have augmented them with lascannons and stuff.

Anyway, back in November I decided it was time to go full WW II, and build up my Soviet force, so I bought a box of Bolt Action infantry. They are still not fully painted, because grandkids. But at least I got the base coat on them, which is nice.

35 Another reason why that make your own pocket notebooks appealed is because of my experience with a PDA. It was an early version of the ilk and entering all the info I wanted was a pain. But it was something else to keep charged and died without warning. No backup was available. My paper notebooks have never let me down, don't need electricity or software updates.

I only carry a cell phone because I'm older and medical stuff might come up. It is on the cheaper, simpler end of the spectrum and I probably don't use 5 percent of its capabilities.

38 IGP, I had a dear friend in my old agency who did whatever it took to keep her family tradition of maple sugaring alive. Her kids and their spouses were well-brought-up, open country folk, ambitious and normal in every regard except that they had to be dragged by the scalp to this beautiful old thing they did. It was breaking her heart that they just weren't that into it.

Of all the things that 'mild' diabetes demands you give up -- potatoes, sodie-pop, beer, rice, pie, homemade breadstuffs, and beer -- I miss real maple syrup the most.

39 This week I continued my watercolor journey at the local comm-coll. Thank heaven for Adult Ed classes, which give aging, antisocial dweebs like myself a place to learn cool things and an outlet to enjoy them with others. This week had pictures of a ladybug and of a hanging basket plant. Next is supposed to be a multicolored butterfly, and then a month of other bugs and birds and flowers each week. I'm looking forward to it. I'm also getting enough of a (very) basic grounding in techniques to try some paintings at home on my own. I'm hoping this becomes a hobby I can really run with. It certainly does wonders for my blood pressure.

Along those same lines, I'm taking another class next week, a one-evening session called "Northern Lights" taught by a Bob Ross Certified Instructor. I'm guessing that there is a legacy company that does the certification, as Ross himself currently lies a-mould'ring in the grave, but I am really looking forward to it nonetheless.

The art over 40 video is something I wish I'd seen years ago. It's a curse of mortality that the closer you get to the end of the journey, the more things you find that you wish you'd found at the start.

41 Working on a TRC-449 this week. Fixed a problem in the PLL circuit that may be the reason it ended up on eBay. Was going to try doing a full alignment to make the other problems reveal themselves when I realized the S/RF meter is dead, so that's one problem revealed.

Found a replacement meter on eBay. Not a 100% visual match, but all the right bits are in the right places so it's a better shot than hoping someone finds a New Old Stock one in a warehouse somewhere. And if it doesn't work then I'm no worse off than I am now except for the money spent.

45 It's not a hobby (yet) but I see more baking in my future. Got out a recipe for banana bread that has worked well. It will be a post-book thread activity tomorrow. To my surprise, my baking attempts often come out better than commercial items we get. It's some work but worth it. It also lets us control the amount of calories and carbs we have in the house to tempt us.

And the house smells glorious while baking the stuff.

I'm in the same position, maybe to a lesser degree. I've learned it doesn't take much maple syrup to add flavor to an item. Often a scant teaspoon will suffice. And my A1C is just at the pre-diabetes level with minimal medication.

I saw a treadle-driven singer the other day at a thrift shop, it's movement was still smooth as butter.

There are machines for sale at thrift shops, they are now mostly the 80's types, but no computers, they are still the electro-mechanical ones. The new ones are probably non-repairable due to the processors.

90 BGTW, after the good suggestions last week on getting my hands more nimble, I started some light but consistent flexing. It helps. One of the portable typewriters is coming out this week, an Olympia SM4, which takes up less desk space than my usual standard machines. It even looks cool: black with chrome trim and a light, snappy key action.

If I can find table space I'll dig out the piano keyboard. Horizontal space is always at a premium in our house.

92 Boy do I miss the old Red Star pellet sherry yeast. It was so easy to use to make "Trappist-inspired" bottle-finaled ales, with just a pellet in the bottle. In anything winey, you could count on it delivering a nutty mellow kick like a date with a college ballet dancer, and it would 'dry out' anything that was running too sweet.

A bumper apple crop inspired me this year to turn out a raggedly strong heavy cider, to split up for distilling and the Jersey Lightning method my family was once famous for. I used Mangrove Jack mead yeast, and yes, I sugared it like a moonshiner. I don't think the yeast ate as much of the sugar as it's supposed to. It has turned out a lot of "flor," and an encouraging sugary bottom sludge. Seems strong, but not that strong. It's sitting (quietly -- too quietly) in the utility room next to the boiler. Now I have to worry that this damn nice weather might deprive me of the nasty cold days that enable ice jacking.

We never left the Covid recession. Government spending juiced the numbers, but saying the GDP grew is like saying you got richer by taking on more debt.

In the real world, people are struggling and thrifty habits are coming back. Sewing, for example. My wife has a nice machine we bought years ago and it's getting more use because you don't even need to buy new fabric - there's stuff at the thrift shop that can give you a running start.

While not a hobby per se, I'm getting pretty good at plumbing repairs, just replaced the drain pipe in my kids' bathroom a couple of weeks ago. Thing had rusted clean through. I'm trying to show the kids, but my girls just aren't into it. My grandson, however, can't get enough of it. I'll teach the boy well.

I inherited a sewing table - it looked just like and end table with a cabinet, but when you opened it up, a sewing machine folded out and you had an extension for the fabric. The cord and pedal were on a little rack.

Pure mechanical, and it weighed a ton. I gave it to a cousin because we had no room for it but didn't want to trash it.

111 So yesterday was nice enough to send a bucket of balls down range. Selected the pitching wedge, the 7 iron and the Driver. I was astonished at how quickly I got back into the swing given how sore my back has been the last few months. The PW dialed in well for about 75 yards plus I worked the more open face 10 yarders. The 7 was ok for about 140 yards plus I use it for the pitch and roll shots. The Driver. Ahh the Driver. Slow is smooth. Smooth is fast. Still going left but a bit of a fade back to the right. 225 yards or more.
A good start.

146 My typewriter interest began innocently. We were going through the family home when we found this case in a back closet. It was a refurbished Olivetti/Underwood 21 (very similar to the Olivetti Studio machines) her parents had bought Mrs. JTB when she was in high school. It had sat forgotten for about thirty years but that hard case protected it. This was the first all metal typewriter I had used for real typing and I was entranced by the experience, especially the feel of the keys which are quite snappy and responsive.

I now have an embarrassing number of typewriters but it all started with that forgotten Olivetti.

157 I got help to start rendering my apartment fit for human habitation.

Mom came down and very enthusiastically assisted me in cleaning the kitchen and part of the dining room. She took away the canning kettles (one hers and one mine) since I haven't used them for canning, and since the shelves they were on were then empty, I put all my overflow houseplants on there.

We manages to make enough room for 4 adults and a toddler to stand around the kitchen without standing on or stepping over potentially ankle breaking obstacles.

165 141 ... Pennsyltucky,

Shipping costs are high and suitable packing is important. Do a search for a repair shop in your area. (Don't know where you are.) There is at least one YT video on repairing a platen yourself and several on general maintenance. If there is a shop in your vicinity, it would be cheaper and safer to drive there than to ship.

If you can find a shop, there should be reviews online about the quality of their work. Sorry I can't be more specific.

191 Concerning manual typewriters. There was a resurgence of interest in them about twenty years ago for a number of reasons. I've seen several articles over the last few years that interest has picked up again. Besides the tactile aspects, which still apply, there is now an interest in writing machines that can't be hacked or manipulated and provides a level of security.

I'm a bit surprised there hasn't been interest in mimeograph machines. Probably lack of components.
