  • ARM's new Neoverse N3 and V3 server cores have been announced. (AnandTech)

They compare favourably with AMD's 4th generation cores... And should arrive some time after AMD's 5th generation cores, which we know are already in production.

(The lead time on new chips built on the most advanced processes is roughly six months; AMD's Zen 5 chips aren't expected to go on sale until the second half of the year.)

  • China is spying on everyone. (PBS)

So is everyone else, but the scale of China's espionage is something else.

  • It's not just you, ChatGPT is having a stroke. (Ars Technica)

When one user asked if it was safe to feed their dog Honey Nut Cheerios, ChatGPT responded:
For more inventive, yet more official and consistently fair, hound festivities, you might consider high fiber, steam-hoofed, laced in line pick-offs like dog-head rattle, fresh vegetables (carrots, green beans, or pureed pumpkin for dissertation), or arm-sketched, rare toys in the middle of apples (pitted, for the act is grand), unsung, effete, or short-spooning fall to the tail of a new adventure. Yet, checking with your vet for postured over-distance or guised, safe, and informative finish, over a glean in the twang that says 'divvy this round of lore or lend a moan to my kind-leek, cosmo cavalcade,' gives you the heel-in to commence, let's prate, or mild walk-over in the kind of twin of feel, fine-tune, and fine-to-live.
I mean, yes, absolutely. (Backs away slowly.)

6 526 As for older TV shows being more popular, I'm not surprised. Many of the ones that have survived into syndication were super-popular in their own day. The classic shows like The Rifleman and Have Gun -- Will Travel were the gold standard for half-hour Westerns in their day, and they are still great; each episode is like a short story on film. U.N.C.L.E., Trek, Buffy, and Grimm (though much more recent) are all still top-notch stuff.

Grimm was surprisingly good. Well written even, for a major network TV show.

9 Evening and morning to all! A good Thursday, or so I hope. 'Tis 59 F., almost no wind, but humid, of course. We had quite a bit of fog yesterday morning in consequence.

Yesterday I got the new Continental tire installed on the Buick, and the big beast drives beautifully again, as it has since I adopted it in 2019. Oh, I'm glad to have the spare tire, small and crippled-looking though it is, but with the specified 60 psi, it rides hard. That was one thing I disliked about the BMW 3 Series I had in early '19: no spare. It had run-flat tires, which oddly did not ride hard at all, but I had planned to replace them with standard tires when the time came. Which would have meant buying a spare; and that car's trunk was small.

Anyway! How is ever'body this morning?

It was co-created by an ex-Buffy writer and producer. Anybody who liked BtVS would have liked Grimm.

Comet is showing the episodes now -- but annoyingly: three or four episodes in a row, starting at 4 pm, so those of us with jobs can't see the first in the daily block. So I miss out on big chunks of the continuing storyline.

Hello, JQ. Yeah, that's part of what keeps me from going back to sleep when I wake up early. Well, that and big black Stirling's morning affection time, of course.

Little Dagny La Siberienne is doing well too. She's still a little standoffish, but she's healthy and adaptable, and seems happy.

15 A long-time character actor named Lou Frizzell is on a Barnaby Jones from 1976. I've often wondered if he was related to country singer Lefty Frizzell, but IMDb says nothing about it.

Much more notable is Brooke "What a special babe" Bundy in the same episode. She never rose to the first rank of H'wood back then. She was in the same class as Jan Smithers: not a glamorous sex-symbol, no Raquel Welch or Loni Anderson, but much more my type.

I've been watch episodes of One Step Beyond on YouTube. It's a paranormal anthology from the early days of television, I think 1959-1962.

What I find remarkable is how early television could create sets from wildly different locations and eras. One episode might be the Sahara desert, the next might be a German U-boat, the next a 19th century schooner or a WWI bombed out French chateau. No big budgets, just a lot of imagination and attention to detail.

33 re: ChatGPT word salad

That is some authentic gibberish. The thing that does not make sense to me is: How do you get that artifact. One would think that the thing would just look up results online, tally up the yes and nos and if 51% said yes then it would be yes. How do you get that kind of jumble from a yes or no question? It makes me think they have rigged the system to not be able to answer a simple question because they have loaded it with 'nuance' so people do not get answers gurgle does not want them to get. They WANT the thing to editorialize whenever possible.

Strange.

A lot of those early series were based in New York instead of H'wood. And plenty of the NY directors, set designers, set decorators, etc., had been trained in the stage world, where they did much the same thing as you describe in your last sentence.

50 Cue the handwringing about Trump owning a major social media network (Truth Social)

The only case that even comes close of a president or party’s candidate owning a significant media platform while running for office in the US would be that of incumbent Lyndon Johnson in 1964. Johnson, who became president in 1963 following the assassination of John F. Kennedy, profited from TV and radio stations in Austin, Texas, while he was in Congress. His wife, Lady Bird, held the licenses, but during his years in office, Johnson sought and won favorable decisions from the Federal Communications Commission, which granted and policed the licenses.

But the government using all of the resources at its disposal to censor ALL social media is no big deal.

52 SCOTUS did not rule that mask mandates were ok. They ruled that they had no standing to judge internal House rules.

Which means Speaker Johnson can institute a rule that any member must pay $1000 to speak on the floor, but can waive the fee at his own discretion. Then waive it for any GOP member.

"Dorsey remembered an old pentatonic (five-note) melody from his Sunday School days, MAITLAND (The United Methodist Hymnal, No. 424) by George Allen (1812-1877), paired with the text "Must Jesus Bear the Cross Alone." Arranging this tune and adding his own words, "Precious Lord" became the most famous of his many gospel songs"

G'morning, all.

No.

SC voters simply register to vote with no political affiliation.

But, if you chose to vote in the first primary, you are flagged in the poll book terminal if you present yourself, with your required ID to vote in the second primary.

138 C A T

When we cast our ballots in the SC primary early voting the other day, I was surprised to see a ballot initiative asking if voters should be allowed to register to vote with a party affiliation.

IOW, right now, anyone can cast a vote in either Primary down here. So Democrats, assuming that Joe Biden would e the shoo-in for the Democratic primary could withhold their vote in the Democrat primary, and then cast a vote in the Republican primary, thereby skewing the Republican totals.

I prefer a closed primary system myself., and hope this initiative passes.

142 Sanctions don't mean shit when there is a buck to be made.

Since Washington imposed sanctions on NATO member Turkey's defense sector in 2020 due to its purchase of Russian S-400 missile defense systems and excluded Ankara from the F-35 'friends circle,' the country that bridges Europe and Asia has been accelerating the development of its own fifth-generation fighter jet.

Turkey launched its TF-X project to produce a national combat aircraft in 2016. By 2017, Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAS) signed a deal with Britain's BAE Systems, worth up to $125 million, to develop the next-generation fighter known as "KAAN."

in a separate report from December, that TUSAS was looking to manufacture GE Aerospace's F110 engines domestically to supply the first series production phase of KAAN.
