The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“All told, we intend to do this the right way so that we can create the right conditions for a safer, more peaceful future. And we will continue to actively engage in the hard work of direct diplomacy on the ground until we reach a final solution,” U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield

Quote II

“It’s a very small price to pay to preserve paradise,” Hawaii’s Democratic governor, Josh Green

Quote III

"For them to win over the opening of the Atlantic they will have to spread, and eventually force the Mid-Atlantic ridge to subduct. This may take more than 20 million years." Dr. João Duarte of the University of LisbonGuess we won't be around to find out he was wrong.

Quote III

Skepticism about democracy — yet never ever explicitly voiced — is a growing problem among Democratic Party thinkers (though not Ezra). On one hand, they wish to turn around and call people on the Right, or libertarians, “undemocratic,” or “anti-democratic,” or whatever. On the other hand, when it comes to actual decisions of great consequence, they are the ones terrified of the democratic processes they themselves have created. They know that, but can’t quite bring themselves to voice their doubts in those terms. Tyler Cowen

Of course the science isn't settled. Not when it comes to the perverse.

Health experts at a National Health Services (NHS) Trust in the UK have said that breast milk produced by trans women is just as good for a baby as the milk produced by a birthing mother, The Telegraph reports.

The assertion was made in a leaked letter from the University of Sussex Hospitals NHS Trust, which defended the practice of trans women receiving a hormone and drug-based therapy to induce breastfeeding. The milk that a trans woman produces as a result of this treatment is "comparable to that produced following the birth of a baby," the letter stated, as quoted by The Telegraph.

Hmmm, I thought the science and taboos were settled. But, I guess it's a new year and new activities to pursue.

Who Had 'Scientists Suggest We Rethink Cannibalism' on Their 2024 Bingo Card?

It's a tricky decision, whether or not to eat other people, and one that should be considered carefully, even though, "ethically, cannibalism poses fewer issues than you might imagine," according to an unsigned, subscriber-only piece in New Scientist.

Nobody wanted to put their name on that or leave it outside the paywall?

Never fear, I provided New Scientist with my credit card number — and, to my mild distress, with my home address — so I could read the excuse for cannibalism so powerful that its author must remain a mystery.

"If a body can be bequeathed with consent to medical science, why can’t it be left to feed the hungry?" asks an ostensibly serious piece in a serious magazine with all the faux-depth of a pot-fueled bull session. Maybe because stringy old carcasses are terrible?

Unlike other states sunk in debt and overspending. Colorado finds itself in a lucky position to purchase battery powered lawn equipment. I bet my neighbor's ICE zero turn rider will more lawn than an EV zero turn rider.

DENVER (KDVR) — State agencies in Colorado will be banned from using certain gas-powered lawn equipment during the summer, according to a new rule adopted by the Colorado Air Quality Control Commission.

The rule applies from June to August. During this time, state agencies will not be allowed to use gas-powered lawn equipment with engines of 25 horsepower or less.

The new regulation also prohibits the use of gas-powered push lawnmowers and other lawn equipment under 10 horsepower on other public property within the Denver metro and north Front Range ozone non-attainment area.

I wonder when the battery powered lawn equipment will be implemented on all citizens. But, on the bright side there are marijuana dispensaries on every other corner.

Once upon a time television shows displayed some qualities. Today, not so much.

New streaming data has revealed that older television shows have performed better than newer shows in terms of views.

The newly released data from Nielsen showed that the top show streamed in 2023 was neither Succession nor The Last of Us but the show Suits, which debuted 12 years ago. Per The Hill:

The most streamed show last year wasn’t the latest Netflix reality TV show craze. Nor was it the highly anticipated final season of “Succession” or the debut of “The Last of Us.”

According to Nielsen, the most minutes last year – more than 57 billion – were spent watching “Suits,” a legal drama that premiered 12 years prior.

Imagine what Hill Street Blues, 24 or NYPD Blue could have been with a little more blood and cursing?

You had one job. One job with 6 numbers.

When John Cheeks saw that the winning lottery numbers on the DC Lottery website matched his ticket in January 2023, he initially didn't know what to think. The prize amount was for a whopping $340 million.

"I didn't shout or scream," Cheeks told NPR. "I just called my longtime friend." That friend advised him to take a picture of the numbers on the screen, which matched a combination of Cheeks' family birth dates and other digits.

However, the ticket was repeatedly denied when Cheeks tried to redeem the prize. He was eventually told by the D.C. Office of Lottery and Gaming that the numbers posted online were a mistake.

I know there are several honorable attorneys here. So tell us, what is the nuisance value on this claim?

A couple of Genius Award Winners this evening.

The first comes from Oklahoma. Go big or stay home or in this case go back to prison, do not collect $200. Genius Award Winner Number 1, (H/T Hrothgar).

Man Allegedly Steals Semi Hauling $1.25 Million Worth of New Corvettes for Ride Home from Prison
The suspect had just been released from jail and needed a ride home when he allegedly decided to steal a truck carrying over $1 million worth of new Chevrolet Corvettes.

And

I'm not a burglar but one would think, "Get in, get out. Right now." Not our Genius Award Winner Number 2

A drunk burglar who broke into a stranger’s home and ransacked it was found by police in an upstairs bedroom eating biscuits.

Scott William Donkin said his sister used to live in the property in Peterlee, County Durham and he was unaware she had moved.

The 30-year-old had been released from prison just two days earlier, when he used a brick to smash through the back door on December 19 last year.

115 DENVER (KDVR) — State agencies in Colorado will be banned from using certain gas-powered lawn equipment during the summer, according to a new rule adopted by the Colorado Air Quality Control Commission.

The rule applies from June to August. During this time, state agencies will not be allowed to use gas-powered lawn equipment with engines of 25 horsepower or less.

We tried something like this in MN during Jesse "The Mind" Ventura's reign. License plate fees proportional to the value of the vehicle.

Farmers screamed because big farm trucks are expensive.

So an exception was made for 3/4-ton plus trucks. (I think that's the cutoff.)

So nobody drives little trucks anymore. The driveway queens are all 3/4-ton.

Less revenue and more road damage from a law to increase revenue for road maintenance. Who could have seen that coming?

I foresee a lot of ozone in Denver this summer from the new mongo-mowers all the subcontractors will be driving to mow twelve square yards of sod.

There is no earthly way that fake milk triggered by hormonal stimulation is in any way, shape or form the equivalent of natural breast milk in terms of nutritional content or amount. Vestigial male breast tissue is just that...vestigial. The milk ducts and fat tissue that enable women to breastfeed are not well developed in men.

The driving motivation has to be satisfying a perverse kink, getting some type of sexual gratification from having an infant suck on your nipples. 160 "If a body can be bequeathed with consent to medical science, why can’t it be left to feed the hungry?" asks an ostensibly serious piece in a serious magazine with all the faux-depth of a pot-fueled bull session.

Why don't we eat city squab first? Besides, the more a muscle group gets used, the tougher the meat (and the longer cooking time needed--or use a pressure cooker).

"This pork tastes great! Was it hard to make?"
"this meat took a long time to cook, so I call it Long Pork".

166 122 I've been seeing this story from the NIH about biologic males so-called breast milk and have had to type:delete several times.

That is straight up PEDOPHILIA of the most vile form. Sick, vile, despicable child abuse. What a bunch of scum. If anyone ever deserved to roast in hell, it is a grown man who would do this.

252 I had, along with Herself New Dawn, the distinct pleasure of breaking bread with Gnu Breed, down in the Orange Beach, MS.

A true Gentleman, from a Chemical Engineering background, mostly in the high-end, exotics "coating" industry. Stuff that could line the insides of pipes in certain chemical processes, and not let the contents attack the steel. Bottom paint for Fire Boats, which would sell for +$700/gal., and is sold by the 55 gal. drum.

He was clever, well read and well informed. And after retiring from the coatings industry, made his living by beating the odds at Poker in various Gulf Coast Casinos.

Three weeks ago, we conversed over the time of 30 minute phone call, and with some frank discussions of his conditions, respectful goodbyes were (tearfully) said.

He was one of Morons here, who'd make any of us proud to be Horde.

It's been a doozy of a last couple days. My near 94 yr old mother fell in the kitchen Tuesday morning, and hit her head on a cabinet. Skinned up her left elbow as well. It didn't knock her out, but the EMS guys insisted on taking her to Greenville to check her out.

They were right. There were signs of a little brain bleeding on the CT scan. They admitted her for observation and are scanning every often to see if anything changes. These things can go south quickly.

So far so good. I don't know when they'll discharge her.

312 TBH, I had never heard of a French drain until she asked me about one.
Posted by: RickZ at February 21, 2024 11:25 PM (emlEe)

Generally now it is a trench with a layer of gravel, a perforated ABS pipe (also called a drainage tile because they used to be made from clay) covered with another layer of gravel and some plastic to keep the dirt out. It allows sub surface water to drain out to let the surface water soak in.
Not the best thing for heavy clay soil, but better than nothing.

Originally a French drain was a trench half or fully filled with gravel, topped with something to keep it from filling with dirt, so that there would not be a need for tiling. The gravel kept it draining sub-surface water and from collapsing and being blocked. Once again it was one of those things that sort of work, but it would work in heavier clay with minimal investment.

318 Does anyone believe that the use of the term, “final solution”, was accidental? I was dismissed for saying that these ahistorical asshats were marxists. EVERYTHING is seen in through the lens of oppressed vs oppressor, no matter how incongruent their thought process seems. I’d say that the depth of ignorance is staggering, but how is this surprising anymore?
It’s so stupid I would have guessed an actor uttered this nonsense. Who knows? Maybe she’s an acting ambassador? Probably related to Binder, or an ex-love-interest!

IMAO, post 10/7, some lefty Jews have been cudgeled out of their somnambulance. But I notice that if I listen to a somewhat sane lefty, agreeing on many things, the catch is always Israel. Always.

AFAIC, everything I needed to know about the Palis I learned from the '72 Olympics, when I was 16. They've been bringing themselves to my attention with their atrocities ever since.

I wish we'd stop giving Israel, and other countries, money. But I also want us to butt out when it comes to how Israel handles their terrorist neighbors.

You might have been the lowest paid cobble cleaner in Sheepbugger-on-Thames, Southwessex, UK... but with that accent you could be a CNN host or Harvard professor in the States.

Done properly, a French drain is 3 or 4 inch perf pipe, sitting on 12 inches of washed drain field rock, wrapped in filter cloth, covered with another 8 to 12 inches of washed DF rock. Many people, contractors included, don't bother with the top covering of rock. Ask me how I know. Sounds like the system is clogged which unfortunately probably means replacement.

You have a very good point. Our culture made what may have been a fatal error in trying to reject religion; people will always have religious faith, it's built into us. If you take away the good, constructive faiths people will dive into older, far more irrational fantasy faiths, because they need something to fill the hole inside. They've created a new religion in which the only thing they worship is themselves.

and actually that's not new at all, it's very old.

But man doesn't live by bread alone, and civilizations certainly don't.

Judaism and Christianity both permit free will. If faith isn't reinforced consistently in the broader society, there's always an alternative - pure, soulless materialism.

But that doesn't actually work. iPhones, drugs and ever-weirder sex aren't an acceptable substitute for a spiritual life, and in the absence of one, people will recoil and seek discipline, like the children they've become. It's only natural.

So in the void, they'll look to any ideology that promises meaning and gives them rules to live by. They've been looking to States and Parties for a little while now, but those have failed. Soon they'll look to G-d again, and the strongest god standing at the moment is the evil one.

In the long run, of course, Allah will be stricken down. But he's gonna have his day again, and soon.

Kindly old Irongrampa I think nearly became an "Absent Friend" yesterday in the act of going in the garage door into our kitchen. Right in the midst of the act a loud bang, then a simultaneous impact next to my face. This was so quick there was no hope of any reaction, it was just too fast.

What happened was the door spring literally shattered at the end and a nasty piece embedded in the drywall. An inch left and I'm gone. A careful inspection when I was able to function after a sit down and cigarette resulted in the job just finished of 4 new springs, some hardware and safety wires to keep this from nearly killing anyone else. My bad for never checking door springs, simply never gave that a bit of thought.

There's quite a bit about Staten Island construction that's odd. Not kidding, either. A french drain in the garage is just one of the 'well that's how they do on Staten Island' responses I get when I query something odd. I don't know if it's building codes, being an island or what, but it is definitely it's own little world when it come to housing construction. Like I said, I had never heard of this critter called a French drain before. Live and learn.

Yeah, those bad boys are under a LOT of tension/strain. I had to replace mine more than a few years ago when one of them kinds blew up like that (original ones attached to the door when I bought the house). No pieces near me, fortunately, but spring pieces all the way across the garage, with a piece hitting and denting my washer (or was it my dryer?). Replaced ALL of them with new springs.

My best guess? Eye of spring failed due to stress-induced corrosion, and the sudden release of tension sent a pressure wave down the spring, and at one point two coils collided with enough force to shatter the metal.

I have an old flip-up garage door on my barn at home (liberated from the town dump, many years ago), and I did not want to mess with springs, so I counterweighted it with a pair of Studebaker cylinder heads, suspended on quarter-inch wire rope. Has worked fine for years. I needed one of the heads, once, and swapped in a different one.

465 Dang, sorry to find GnuBreed has passed.

Hubby has a similar affliction, but evidently is not fully decompensated (like the Dr's all thought). Transplant is not desired anyway-- hubby has already said no to that, although at one point, his MELD score was 27.

They tried to shove him onto hospice a couple years ago, instead of just operating on a hernia/intestinal obstruction, but we persisted until emergency surgery was approved... sheesh!

Godspeed, GnuBreed. Peace and comfort to your loved ones.

Sees that our furnace uses fuel oil and tells me: "We don't service fuel oil furnaces." Apologizes and says they'll schedule service for A/C later this year. 526 As for older TV shows being more popular, I'm not surprised. Many of the ones that have survived into syndication were super-popular in their own day. The classic shows like The Rifleman and Have Gun -- Will Travel were the gold standard for half-hour Westerns in their day, and they are still great; each episode is like a short story on film. U.N.C.L.E., Trek, Buffy, and Grimm (though much more recent) are all still top-notch stuff.
