106 Hey, CBD, did you read that article about Prince William... or just the headline?

Here are some excerpts (just snippets since there's a character limit):

"The Prince is keen to use his platform to highlight the plight of millions of innocent civilians on both sides."

-- That's the closest I find in the actual text to what the headline claims. And there are innocent civilians on the Gaza side. I don't know about "millions" but there are some... sucks to be them but it doesn't hurt to recognize that they exist.

"The comments come after the Prince and Princess condemned Hamas’s “appalling terrorist attack upon Israel” in October 2023, warning that both parties would be “stalked by grief, fear and anger” as “Israel exercises its right of self defense.”"

-- Is he wrong? He doesn't say that Israel shouldn't defend itself, merely that it'll be yet another in a long line of grievances (legitimate or otherwise).

New Study: Climate Models Get Water Vapor Wildly Wrong – A ‘Major Gap in Our Understanding’

A new study published in PNAS has demonstrated, once again, that climate models fail to simulate what happens in the real world with regard to fundamental climate change variables like water vapor. This is a devastating finding, as water vapor is the most significant greenhouse gas due to its alleged “feedback” capacity, accelerating warming well beyond what CO2 is said to be capable of alone.
The authors do not understate the significance of this climate modeling failure.
“This represents a major gap in our understanding and in climate model fidelity that must be understood and fixed as soon as possible in order to provide reliable hydroclimate projections for arid/semi-arid regions in the coming decades.”

Perhaps we should do that before we destroy our economy. Just a thought.

A few years ago another study documented how wildly wrong 102 state-of-the-art climate models have been with regard to a 60-year temperature trends (1958-2017) over tropical regions.

The models say the tropical warming rate should have been nearly 3 times larger than the observations show... – due to the assumed feedback response to CO2 forcing over warm regions. Instead, there is a “clear and significant tendency on the part of the models to overstate warming.”

These authors also do not understate the significance of this modeling failure. Climate models are not even realistic.
“Instead, we observe a discrepancy across all runs of all models, taking the form of a warming bias at a sufficiently strong rate as to reject the hypothesis that the models are realistic.”

“The major hypothesis in contemporary climate models, namely, the theoretically based negative lapse rate feedback response to increasing greenhouse gases in the tropical atmosphere, is incorrect.”

The anti-climate change people have been calling out this error for literally years.

CO2 isn't a particularly strong greenhouse gas. The assumption is that CO2 leads to increases in water vapor, but no one has been able to prove it at all, not even in lab conditions.

It's the core of the climate change science, and it's unproven nonsense. No wonder they rely on computer models.

152 Just perusing the internets, there are obvious connections between Gris and Picasso, and one of Gris' works IS a portrait of Pabbie.

One reference says Gris was a "disciple" of Pablo, another is a quote from Gertrude Stein, saying Gris is the one person Picasso "wished away." Whatever that means.

Clearly these fellas had influence over one another, in one area of their work or another. Apparently Gris started out as a newspaper/magazine illustrator, and was talked into painting.

I stand by my rather flippant comment above though, there appear to be few photos of the guy out there, but he's obviously not bad looking. Picasso, who of course looks like a troll, would very likely have been jealous of him in that regard.

Of all the people who ever got top billing in any production of fiction, how did you choose those three as your examples?

Quality acting, they ain't.

I was watching the Thin Man movies recently, and William Powell is just fun to watch on screen. He's sorta that way, I guess. Always playing himself, but he's opposite Myrna Loy, who I have seen in many things. Her portrayal of Nora Charles is unique to her body of work. She envelopes the role, seems to have transformed into the character, and makes you forget she's just acting in a movie.

She IS Nora Charles! Except in everything else she's ever done. Then she's not.

191 Gris-Gris

In West Africa, the Caribbean, and Louisiana: a charm or amulet in the form of a piece of paper inscribed with text and placed inside a pouch or bag.

Gris-gris originated in West Africa where they were worn upon one's person for protection. They were introduced to the Caribbean and Louisiana during the transatlantic slave trade.

In voodoo they are also used to cause harm to others.

201 I was watching the Thin Man movies recently, and William Powell is just fun to watch on screen.

Bravo to Denmark! With tRumplicans putting off aid to Ukraine, all European NATO members need to step up!

Can we give arms to NATO nations without a vote from congress? You would think we might have some loopholes that Joe’s big guns could dig up.

Forbes reported we did that with Greece; they then gave arms to Ukraine!

Until we change control of the House, that ain't happening. Congress needs to pass something larger and more open ended, and quit these pennyante aid packages that are doing little other than keeping Ukraine's nose above the water.

=======

The movie star system was explicitly designed around typecasting actors by Irving Thalberg at MGM.

It was a way to help standardize productions. Certain types of stars went to certain types of movies. The audience knew that if they saw John Barrymore on a poster, they'd see something like Grand Hotel. If they saw Clark Gable, they'd see another kind of movie more along the lines of Mutiny on the Bounty.

Barrymore was a great Shakespearean actor on the stage, but Hollywood intentionally put him in as small a box as possible. Many actors grated under this system because their "art" was sacrificed to the machine's needs. Some, like James Cagney, were really happy to not try that hard and get paid well.

252 As for actors, yes, there are actors and then there are movie stars. The two categories occasionally meet, in Bogart and Anthony Hopkins, Henry Fonda, James Stewart, and a few others. Nicole Kidman is another, especially as she's grown older.

Strange to say, I've always been kind of impressed by Jack Black. He plays annoying characters, yes, but he does it so well. His characters, the ones I've seen, are recognizably human -- his musician/substitute teacher in School of Rock and his impresario in the latest version of King Kong, for example.

File under people that will do anything to prevent a Biden 2nd term. If No Labels run a "reasonable" candidate, then the "reasonable" vote will be split two ways, giving a win to the worst candidate.

Guaranteed that everyone they're considering will draw more votes from Biden than Trump. No Labels is just Republicans trying to hide to siphon away Democratic votes.

I was surprised to see Ben Chavis' name up there. He had been heavily involved in the Civil Rights Movement and had been EO of the NAACP after Ben Hooks died. Sad, using his reputation to support/front a Republican rat-fucking operation.

No. He had the 7th Cavalry, roughly 700 men, and he broke them into four separate units and attempted to attack. It was an epic clusterfuck. You think unkindly of a Union officer?

I’m so surprised. 😀

411 What does Prince William say in the sidebar about Palestinians? It's behind a paywall. I fear that this promising young man is going to be a lot more like his dopey father than I'd hoped.

412 Custer was a vainglorious a**hole.
Just my $.02 worth.
He went in to the village to kill the squaws and children.
Surprise, surprise...

413 Gobekli Tepe. You can hear the UnchartedX guy talk about it here: http://tinyurl.com/47thau5h

Apparently, there are many Tepes in Turkey, some far older and bigger. It's a fascinating channel.

Second the UnchartedX channel, especially if you are interested in alternative history

414 Marathon Man. And I still have a sneaking admiration for his underplayed light comedy style way back in The Graduate.

Hoffman's a truly great actor. Not much he's done that isn't terrific work, nothing I can think of off hand.

Lots of other shitty movie stars out there, during his run, but he was just great at what he did.

Only person from that era I'd put up there with him is Hack Man. Maybe Duvall, but there aren't many more.

415 Rain Man and Papillon

Yeah. You're right, those were both very good. Why the fuck did they think they could remake Papillon? I watched 5 minutes of that and turned it off. WTF?

416 I think it's upside down.

139 I think he should have stayed out of it but Prince William also asked for the release of the prisoners; and called October 7th a terrorist attack.

418 California has two main, U. S. Asylum offices and can be picking up a nice amount of new money if - no, rather when - the bill passes, as will the other primary offices AND their cities and states.

DHS gov: There are currently 11 principal asylum offices: Arlington, Virginia; Bethpage (Long Island), New York; Boston, Massachusetts; Chicago, Illinois; Houston, Texas; Miami, Florida; Newark, New Jersey; New Orleans, Louisiana; San Francisco, California; Tampa, Florida; and Tustin (Los Angeles), California.

419 I was watching the Thin Man movies recently, and William Powell is just fun to watch on screen.

Him shooting the ornaments on the Christmas tree with the BB gun always cracks me up. What a great pairing of two classic stars.

420 obvіously like yoսr web site but you have to take a lоok
at the spelling on quite a few of your posts.

A number of them are rife witһ spelling issues
and I find it very troublesome to inform the reality on the other hand I will certainly come back again.
