I like the simplicity of it. Sometimes art of this era can be too busy. The artist is showing off. This is quiet and to the point (no pun, intended). It focuses on the Apostle's devotion and martyrdom. That he kept the sword in there is a nice touch--the instrument of his death and his attribute.

There is an ethereal quality to this painting. The martyr's head, very realistic, seems to float against the plain, nonspecific background. All the colors blend as various shades of brown, including the skin tones and the sword hilt, adding to the floating aspect of the image. Not something I would hang but it is mesmerizing.
I actually prefer Murillo's paintings of regular people like the ones with little boys or the girl with a coin. One aspect of his paintings is the subtle use of color and light: not drab but not flashy. That lends a realistic feel to his work. Posted by: JTB at February 20, 2024 09:59 AM (zudum) 80

The Byzantines went through a iconoclastic phase. It actually isn't clear if they got the idea from the Caliphate or the Caliphate got the idea from them. The history of early Islam is very, very unclear. We know about the early Caliphate's conquests because their victims wrote about it. But what was Islam at the time? No one really knows... Murillo accomplishes so much with a limited palette in many of his paintings. I wonder if he influenced Anders Zorn when he developed the Zorn palette a few centuries later. The Zorn palette colors are Vermilion, Ivory Black, Flake White and Yellow Ochre. What can be done with those few colors is fascinating.

Nate Silver: “Biden needs to reassure the American public that he’s capable of handling public appearances that aren’t on easy mode. Or he needs to stand down. Or he’s probably going to lose to Trump,” Silver wrote in a post on X.
Biden gave a press conference the day the report came out. No problems in front of a hostile press corps. Nate Silver is a clown who is pushing for a horse race. How stupid to think Biden "standing down" would be anything but an unmitigated disaster. Sure, a last-minute contested primary for the Democratic nomination. That’ll work out great!🙄 I clearly remember George McGovern losing 49 states to Nixon. McGovern wasn't an incumbent POTUS with a record of accomplishments to run on. Biden hasn't even started actual campaigning yet. And he has a winning record in general elections... If voters watch Biden, they should be reassured if they have any doubts. South Park has been censored I believe 5 times. Twice for presenting an image of Mohammed.
Specifically they had a plot where religious figures of various beliefs joined together like a superhero team - including figures like Jesus and Buddha. They are all presented as fundamentally good but...modern Islam gets head choppy about presenting an image of Mohammed so censorship was the answer... Not factual. That is not a fact. I am in the midst of dealing with the Serbian Orthodox Church facing an invasion of Nationalist Russian Orthodox money, a LOT of it, and not fighting that with funds but with dogma and theology. Since their ill advised decision to go all Gina Carano by firing their top VTuber talent, Selen, via Twitter/X before telling her personally she was fired it has gone downhill ever since. Their stock since the beginning of February has lost 10% of its value. Merchants have cancelled contracts that has cost AnyColor merchandise revenue. Their other VTube talent have lost subscribers which means lost revenues as fans have voted with their pocketbooks while the talent they tried to smear, Selen as Dokibird, has risen to new heights of popularity. There has been a theory floating around for a while that the people of the Mesopotamia learned urbanization from refugees from the Black Sea region.
Sea levels rose their around 8K years ago, whether slowly or rapidly isn't clear, and there were people living there. But...it isn't clear what level of civilization they had, whether they had agriculture, and whether any of them actually fled south. Oh and one of the fascinating things/problems in trying to understand history is just how hard it is without writing.
So we know a lot about ancient Greece and a little about their neighbors because...they were a literate society and we have access to some of their writings. But as you get further from societies that wrote things down you have to make assessments based on archeology and genetic markers which get harder. I've laughed at the feminist assessment of the Indo-European invasions of Europe and the Middle East (they didn't conquer their neighbors...they traded with them and the local women just found them sexier then their own men!) but absent written accounts people can make incorrect assumptions... I really don't think Trump will win against Biden in 2024. But I do think we are all quietly praying for long life and good health for Biden. If Trump did manage to install himself as "president for life," old age will take him out within another couple of decades. The damage he would do is incalculable, of course. But Germany as a nation survived Hitler, though many of its citizens -- and citizens of other places -- did not. The big difference, of course, is the nuclear stockpile, which did not exist in 1945. HTF did that guy get back in again after his ass was booted in 1989? My theory is: dumbass young people who aren't old enough to remember life under the Sandys.
Posted by: Captain Obvious, Laird o' the Sea, Radioactive Knight at February 20, 2024 10:36 AM (0gvpA) Yes he did. And is now, for all practical purposes, President for life, just like Somoza. And the old Sandinistas call him "Somoza Leche". The economy is more Fascist than socialist. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at February 20, 2024 10:57 AM (tkR6S) 283

"Since 1987 I'd been in Hungary, and then since 1989 in neighboring Slovakia. There during the fall of the Berlin Wall. I saw my students (I was a Fulbrighter) rise to the occasion, joining the nationwide student strikes to rid the university system of the secret police corruption that had long been ruling.
Some reforms passed. But the roles of the secret police is another story. A sad one. Pathetic. They kept their old power, under new guises, and also under the protection of the U.S. Department of State, which prioritized friendly terms with the former powers-that-had-been (all that nomenklatura) so that the hordes of new U.S. capitalists could more easily ally with them. Hello, the new oligarch classes. Hello Putin. Hello genocidalists in Serbia. Hello Orban and hate-filled nationalists near everywhere there." I see.
