6 Evening and morning to all! Been awake for a while, and haven't the energy for a full-scale workout. I did my stretches and calisthenics, though. Time for a slice of whole-grain toast w/ peanut butter.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at February 20, 2024 04:06 AM (omVj0)

7 LL Cool J is good but he's no Schooly D.

Schooly D's 'Am I Black Enough For You' fast mix in 'King Of New York' is a rap masterpiece, and 'Signifying Rapper' off 'Bad Lieutenant' comes close to knocking Rudy Ray Moore off his throne. That's hard to do.

Posted by: LenNeal at February 20, 2024 04:06 AM (9yXr+)

8 Schooly D's 'Gucci Time' was his car-trunk and ghetto storefront hit but he did his finest work and rhymes in partnership with Abel Ferrara in movie soundtracks.

Posted by: LenNeal at February 20, 2024 04:11 AM (9yXr+)

9 I liked stopping by the ghetto cassette tape stores, and asking what they had that was cool for USD$50-100.
Give me something interesting.
I still have a few of them, home-brewed early Rap. A lot of it was superlative, really good stuff. They didn't care about licensing samples, it was all underground, and some of its astonishing. Kids would take a Miles Davis track and run with it, and nobody ever heard it but the Block.
Jimmy Page grasping for his 'riff' infuriated me.
Fuck him.

12 Mornin'

Plumber will arrive this afternoon. Maybe. They said between 12-3, maybe. A leak behind the sink. Also, behind a wall. The ancient pipe, built during the Johnson Administration, has rusted away and is leaking on the condo unit below. I can't use my bathroom sink as a result. Not catastrophic, but it's not good either.

Posted by: Puddleglum, cheer up for the worst is yet to come at February 20, 2024 04:20 AM (sAmhv)

13 Ha! Those ghetto tape stores.

"What you got that's interesting?"
"We ain't got no Carpenters."

"I think you misunderstand."

The car trunks were cool too, most rappers had a boombox so you could hear a sampler before you bought. Some of those guys, and some girls, were seriously talented poets.

17 A lot of people regard 'rap' as just talking. I disagree. In some of the very ancient places I've been 'music' is not a musical performance per se, but rather a rhythmic drone to an epic spoken poem. The Western stringed instruments of many strings are built on mostly single-string droning lyre/bow type machines. The instruments are there to give vibration and metre and act as a structured mnenomic, through which tales can be transmitted, without literacy, down through astoundingly long periods of Time.

Long story short: Vtuber agency Nijisanji harassed one of its talents until she attempted suicide, then fired her, then forced other talents to publicly accuse her of orchestrating the whole thing. Nijisanji then announced to investors that the financial impact of this PR catastrophe would be negligible, and its share price promptly dropped by 20%.

It's a very basic, foundational memory function that is separate from the written word and lasts a lot longer.
At one factory job I had a co-worker sing me a Finnish folk song that his grandfather taught him, which he himself did not understand and he could not tell me what the words meant in English!

27 It's agreed by honest scholars that epics such as The Odyssey and The Iliad aren't 'written novels', they are transcriptions of performed, rhythmic epic poetry recited to a droning instrument of mostly one, maybe two strings.
And more or less accurately transmitted for centuries that way.

Seems my Pandora account is linked to an AOL email account I'd totally forgotten about. Wow, there was a lot of spam in there. Also, the new-ish requirement that any password require a non-alphabetic character has led to some confusion on my part as to where I put it in the string.

Posted by: Pete Bog'

First of all, having stored on various media since the mid-1990s, diversify. Your idea of putting everything on a single, permanent electronic shelf is illusory. It's smart to transfer at most every 10 years. So yes, get a Tb storage, but date what you have and be ready to transfer your data to somewhere else after a period of time of be prepared to lose it. Yes, even Walmart sells a HDD for less than $200 that has Bluetooth but I ask why.
It's slow compared to other avenues.
Hard contact, a cord, is so much faster.

Posted by: LenNeal at February 20, 2024 05:20 AM (9yXr+)

39 Western digital has a “home” backup that’s 4tb. Mixed reviews. I don’t want or need web access or fractions of a millisecond read times.

Just have lots of pictures to store and backup. And a single disc product does not have redundancy for safe keeping.

Posted by: Pete Bog at February 20, 2024 05:21 AM (BHL6B)

40 I have a consumer tech question. Does anyone make a NAS type product that runs with WiFi or Bluetooth?'

Any particular reason for the desire for WiFi and/or Bluetooth? I'm not trying to be rude, I'm genuinely curious.

LenNeal thanks for the input. It’s validation for what I was thinking. I have lots of files on older surface book and scattered around. Problem is only one USB port so can’t plug the card reader in as well as the NAS. A switch isn’t difficult just becomes a one use piece of equipment and probably will sit in the box forgotten.

I’d guess a networked NAS drive may have multiple USB ports?

Posted by: Pete Bog'

Well, I use cheap HP USBs I get off eBay in bulk and don't put more than a little bit on any one of them. My daughter, The Kid, has a what 2TB drive, but she admits she should get another backup for that.
So I don't know, if you're seriously concerned about the data and want a safe backup, get two drives of different kinds and/or brands? I assume you know not to put it in The Cloud, at least not solely.

52 Sounds like I’m buying a couple of different storage devices and will have to back them up to each other from time to time.

Trying to avoid the cloud and NAS degree of difficulty in administration.

I like the idea of diversifying the products but in reality it means more plugs and power cords to keep track and two clunky interfaces to try to recall during occasional use.

I personally have no answer for you there, as I'm so paranoid about legacy storage being lost that I do not do what you discuss. I think you are looking for a time-saving process and there might not be one, to really be careful and really archive your images.
I might not be your go-to for advice about what you want to do.
I also ask, are the images in multiple file formats? Are half of them TIFFS?

I’ve done enough for both of us. And probably Skip and Ciampino as well.

Good feedback. Should have thought about a usb hub. It’s gonna end up looking like a power cord octopus at a third world flea market but that probably the easiest administration option.

A new consumer electronics product need identification has occurred. Except Western Digital is so close to addressing it that is how I’ll go.

56 Sounds like I’m buying a couple of different storage devices and will have to back them up to each other from time to time.'

No, if you purchase them at the same time you will have to transfer the data from both when they get old, to something else, to achieve redundancy. If you really want the images, find a print shop and print them all out.

I'm starting to think a great many people do not comprehend how illusory electronic data storage really is. It does not last very long. 10 years is barely safe. I've been online about 25 years, not close to some of the graybeards here, and it's scary how much is already gone it's like silver nitrate films.

Calimari stereo would mean two of calimari which is already plural. Is that expressed numerically as plus, times or exponentially?

In any of those examples the outcome is four. Unless it’s eight?

Can I just stick with Octopus/octopi? Tenderized and sautéed in olive oil, chopped garlic, white wine and a little paprika with a splash of Citrus to finish.

Actually, Yo Fen, what is your impression of Orthodox Christian Ikons?
What do you think they are, how do you feel about them? They're not a 'part' of us, they're central, the entire point, it's experiential, and the sidelining of them in Catholicism is a deal breaker, and Protestant rejection makes that 'evolution' not Christianity at all.

Genuinely curious.

170 Gonna be a great morning, folk. On the way into work I banged the RF tire into a curb, and all the air leaked out of it. I tried pumping it back up; no go. AAA is on the way to change it for the donut spare, but I almost certainly will need to buy a new tire. And a Continental is not cheap.

Fortunately I am already at work, and it's not raining. I'll unload the trunk so the technician can get to the tire and put the damaged one in there. The next step will be finding a shop to examine it and see if it can be salvaged. If not, I'll ring up Tire Rack and have a tire sent to me.

Posted by: Warai-otoko at February 20, 2024 05:52 AM (9UlRk)

Calamari is the plural in Italian. One calamaro is singular of course.

calamari (also calamares )
plural noun squid served as food.

ORIGIN
Italian, plural of calamaro, from medieval Latin calamarium 'pen case', from Greek kalamos 'pen' (with reference to the squid's long tapering internal shell and its ink).

In short, Fen, Apple runs a proprietary text avenue? That is antiquated in the extreme and is not compatible with anything newer. They're selling a cool shell with an antique inside.
So when faced with an Android text, Apple converts it into its own form, then looks for a place for it to go. Without a primary destination, it looks for a secondary, and that's your old phone. This is vastly simplified but that's what is happening. It's like, the letter is supposed to go to your house, but since the carrier can't find your house, they deliver it to your son.

In The Balkans, what is or is not real or possible is determined by power and influence. So I, in certain situations, can simply tell someone something is indeed possible and it had better happen, right now. Like, 4 people, exactly, are going to perform an action. There is no fact. No discussion.
But in this case it is simply not worth the effort and I attribute it to flocks or herds. Yes there is more than two and less than a hundred, at this moment in time. Some may be lost, one or two might be excess, there may be dead I missed.

Says the driver "“That’s why I hate dealing with police, because it ends up biting me in the rear end.”
