THE MORNING RANT: More Winning in the Culture Wars at the State & Local Level

Paxton smiling.JPG

It cannot be stressed enough that we can win significant battles at the state and local level against the left and their destructive agenda. In fact, we are winning significant battles. There are the high-profile victories, such as Ron DeSantis’ amazing record in Florida against woke corporations and Covid sharia, as well as the growing number of states that have now banned the transgender industry from altering children’s bodies. But below those top-of-the-fold stories, there is a lot more winning happening.

*****

Last year, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton banned Citigroup from underwriting bond issues in Texas because of its discriminatory policies against gun owners and manufacturers. He has not let up, and he remains on offense against woke capital.

“Texas Bans Barclays from Participating in Bond Market Due to ESG Commitments” [WSJ – 01/26/2024]

Barclays was previously identified as a potential “fossil fuel boycotter” under Texas law. The bank subsequently opted not to respond to questions about its ESG commitments, Paxton’s office said.

The Attorney General’s Public Finance Division ruled that “we will not approve any public security issued on or after today’s date in which Barclays purchases or underwrites the public security or is otherwise a party to a covered contract relating to the public security.”

One state Attorney General like Ken Paxton can do so much more in the fight against the woke agenda than any elected official in Washington, which is also why the RINO-Democrat alliance in Texas fought so hard to remove Paxton from office via impeachment. There were plenty of squish Republicans in Texas who would have played along with the failed impeachment too, but their constituents made it clear that if they terminated Paxton’s career, they would also be terminating their own political careers.

*****

Over in Arizona, “green energy” was just dealt a serious setback by a somewhat obscure regulatory agency, the Arizona Corporation Commission, which governs and regulates utilities in the state.

“Arizona regulators vote to repeal state renewable energy target, efficiency rules” [S&P Global – 02/08/2024]

In a highly unusual move, Arizona utility regulators ordered their staff to draft new rules that would repeal the state's existing mandates for renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Perhaps this is being reported as a ”highly unusual move” because the left isn’t used to receiving pushback to its eco-communist agenda. The reason this could happen at all is that conservative Republicans hold 4 of the 5 seats on the commission, and they are responsive to rate payers who cannot afford higher rates for unicorn-based electricity.

These regulatory officers were voted into office in statewide elections. While these Corporate Commission seats are not as prestigious as the US Senate seats that Martha McSally keeps losing, they are much more important to the everyday life of Arizonans, and these four Republican commissioners have done more to defeat the anti-carbon agenda than all the Senators in Washington combined.

State and local elections matter.

*****

We may not be able to defeat BlackRock and the woke financial oligarchy in Washington DC, but we can beat them state by state. There was more good news in the battle against woke capital last week, this time in South Carolina.

“McMaster signs bill to ban ESG from South Carolina’s retirement system” [The Center Square – 02/15/2024]

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster ceremonially signed a measure mandating the state's retirement system to consider only "pecuniary factors" when making investment decisions.

H.3690, the ESG Pension Protection Act, effectively bans the South Carolina Retirement System Investment Commission from weighing environmental, social and governance factors and orders the system to maximize the highest rate of return for beneficiaries.

State and local elections in South Carolina put the legislators and Governor in office to make this anti-ESG victory happen.

*****

While South Carolina wasn’t the first or most prominent state to bar state funds from being used in ESG investments, perhaps it was the straw that broke the Bond villains’ backs.

“JPMorgan Chase, BlackRock drop out of massive UN climate alliance in stunning move” [FoxBusiness – 02/15/2024]

JPMorgan Chase and institutional investors BlackRock and State Street Global Advisors (SSGA) on Thursday announced that they are quitting or, in the case of BlackRock, substantially scaling back involvement in a massive United Nations climate alliance formed to combat global warming through corporate sustainability agreements.

The stunning announcements come as the largest financial institutions in the U.S. and worldwide face an onslaught of pressure from consumer advocates and Republican states over their environmental, social and governance (ESG) priorities.

Again, this retrenchment by globalist woke capital isn’t happening because of any Republican in Congress. This is happening because of conservative Republicans elected at the state level, and acting at the state level. Will the globalist villains of high-finance try to rebrand their evil agenda? Of course they will, but now they know that we are watching them, and we are ready to divest if they backslide.

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar is celebrating the withdraw of those big investment firms from the climate alliance, but he remains watchful and skeptical of them too.

“Texas still skeptical about companies claiming to withdraw from ESG commitments” [The Center Square – 02/16/2024]

Hegar said in a statement on Thursday that companies distancing themselves from CA100+ is a “welcome development.”

However, he remains skeptical. He explained the experiences his staff have had when talking to people in the financial industry. “We heard firms telling Texas one thing but then providing very different and often contradictory information to states like New York or California,” he said. “Unfortunately, some of that doublespeak continues in these announcements.”

It is a positive development that aspiring politicians in red states have learned they can advance their political careers by going to battle against woke, anti-American corporations. The eco-communists of Wall Street cannot bluff their way through the red state pushback.

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar is more important in the culture wars than either of Texas’ senators in Washington.

State and local elections matter.

*****

Also in Texas, this time on the education battlefront…

“Texas A&M closes satellite Qatar campus citing 'heightened instability’ in the Middle East”

“Heightened instability” is a way of stating that Qatar provides support and protection to Hamas, and as much as the faculty and leadership at Texas A&M may find common cause with Hamas, the average Texan is repulsed by taxpayer money being used by A&M to abet anti-Israeli terrorists.

The move by the board of regents follows revelations in a recent report published by the Institute for the Study of Global Antisemitism & Policy (ISGAP) which highlighted Qatar’s relationship with the Muslim Brotherhood and uncovered "its extensive financial arrangements with Texas A&M University."

Under pressure from alums and regular citizens, A&M Regents voted 7-1 to close its Qatar campus.

Sullivan Qatar.JPG

The Regents voted this way because they have finally learned to fear voters and angry alumni more than they fear the noisy, left-wing radicals that are so prominent in the halls of Texas A&M.

*****

And also in Texas, and also on the education battlefront…

“UT-Austin eliminates scholarship program for undocumented students following Texas’ DEI ban” [Dallas Morning News – 01/25/2024]

University officials noted that the scholarship potentially violates Texas’ new ban on diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in state universities and colleges, according to internal messages obtained by The Dallas Morning News.

A new Texas law, signed by Gov. Greg Abbot in May, requires the elimination of DEI offices and any programming based on race, color, ethnicity, gender identity and sexual orientation.

Yes, I’m a stuck record, but this victory occurred because voters elected legislators who made it happen, and a Governor who signed the law. And most importantly, many of those elected officials who might not have wanted to vote that way did so because they knew they would pay the price at the ballot box if they betrayed their constituents.

State and local elections matter.

*****

Primary elections will be held over the next few months to choose candidates for the 2024 general election in November. I implore you to do a little research and find out which Republicans are movement conservatives, and which are just seeking office as a Republican. In red states where Democrats don’t have much of a chance in November, liberal candidates often run as Republicans and then betray their voters once elected.

This is not a foolproof test, but if a political nepot is running on his/her Daddy’s famous political name, politics is the family business, and there is probably a better candidate to vote for in the primary.

Have a wonderful President’s Day. I’ll be celebrating James Polk and Calvin Coolidge today. How about you?

All fine and dandy, but the "answer" is not in elections. It's in the people reaching the point of recognizing government isn't the answer, government doesn't have the answer, and indeed, government is the problem.

Better government is still bad government.

23 Thx Buck , great post. One of the things driving the collapse in the corporate world of DEI and ESG is the threat of shareholder lawsuits. DEI and ESG aren't profitable and are lowering the value of the shares, ergo the directors and executives should not be engaging in them. Of course the WEF prefers stakeholders aka corporate socialism which says profitablity is irrelevant versus 'goodness"

24 Let's keep in mind that the esg, dei and green crap folks are the same type who tried to push communism for decades. When openly pushing it they made no headway, so they resorted to subterfuge and invaded academe where it was easier to get that thin wedge in the door. Once there they pushed communism, socialism and any other bad ism they could find. This isn't over and everyone needs to be very vigilant.

33 Along similar lines, private businesses can make a difference, too.

Tiny NY town loses its giant Remington factory, it's moving to "gun friendly" Georgia. Remington started in Ilion in upstate New York in 1816 and grew into a one million square foot factory. With a population of just 7,600, the factory has long been the town's main employer.

Cheaper labor. Right-to-work. Whole ny families will be destroyed.

That right there is why they are moving. it isn't about "gun friendly", it's about being able to pay people less and fire at will.

Imagine thinking you've got a job for life, and then this rug gets pulled out from under you? This is going to decimate that town. Itll be another rundown rust belt town with shuttered businesses and boarded up homes.

There's a public library. Wonder how it's funded? This is the kind of hit that hits the library hard!

The funny thing is, Remington makes hunting guns, not assault rifles. They tried AR's and handguns for a time but that mostly failed. Now it's mostly bolt action deer rifles and shotguns. Guns used in mass shootings are rarely Remington models.

68 Another great post, Buck.

Thanks for laying out the more positive political news from several states. But I, from one of those always controversial red states, greatly appreciate the following, too:

"Primary elections will be held over the next few months to choose candidates for the 2024 general election in November. I implore you to do a little research and find out which Republicans are movement conservatives, and which are just seeking office as a Republican. In red states where Democrats don’t have much of a chance in November, liberal candidates often run as Republicans and then betray their voters once elected."

Truth, but we can NEVER give up.

Most of the gains in the market have only made up for the miserable returns in Biden’s disastrous first two years in office when stocks lost almost 15 percent of their value. What I'm talking about is his presidency. 135 Cotton statement released on January 6, 2021:

“Last summer, as insurrection gripped the streets, I called to send in the troops if necessary to restore order. Today, insurrectionists occupied our Capitol. Fortunately, the Capitol Police and other law-enforcement agencies restored order without the need for federal troops. But the principle remains the same: no quarter for insurrectionists. Those who attacked the Capitol today should face the full extent of federal law.

It’s past time for the president to accept the results of the election, quit misleading the American people, and repudiate mob violence. And the senators and representatives who fanned the flames by encouraging the president and leading their supporters to believe that their objections could reverse the election results should withdraw those objections. In any event, the Congress will complete its constitutional responsibilities tonight.”

In defense of lowering Grant on the scale: his presidency wasn't great. He didn't win the Civil War as president.

His presidency was marred because he was an outsider that the Republican Party felt like they didn't need to deal with in order to get what they wanted, lying to him about how they would support him in private conversation, and then undermining him through Congressional action. Also, his cabinet kind of sucked.

On this day in 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which led to the forcible incarceration of over 120,000 Americans of Japanese descent – half of whom were children. It was shameful. Families were separated. Communities were torn apart. People were stripped of their dignity. And the unconstitutional and unconscionable policy was even upheld by the Supreme Court.

In the face of injustice, 33,000 Japanese Americans stepped up and courageously served in the U.S. military during World War II. They demonstrated loyalty and patriotism. We honor those service men and women, as well as the legacy of civil rights leaders like Fred Korematsu, Minoru Yasui, Gordon Hirabayashi, and Mitsuye Endo, along with every Japanese American who organized and worked to right a wrong. Their sacrifice, their resilience and their belief that civil liberties and freedom must be vigorously defended inspire us today.

I decided to run for President to restore the Soul of America. To confront racism, xenophobia, and hate in all its forms. To strengthen and preserve our democracy. We remember the tragic legacy of Executive Order 9066 – and the trauma it inflicted – by reaffirming the Federal Government’s formal apology to Japanese Americans. And by stating unequivocally: Nidoto Nai Yoni – to “Let It Not Happen Again.”

State Sen. Matt Dolan,

Moreno is endorsed by Trump. I'm leaning towards LaRose, he's more polished than Moreno, but I still have doubts about an elected politician. Dolan would be another Tillis or similar.

Polls show a near dead heat among the 3, and all three being narrowly edged out by Brown. Same polls show Trump leading outside margin of error over Biden.

Brown has ads showing how he worked with D's and R's to save steel jobs in OH. After all this, I still don't get how some voters could mark Trump and Brown. Idiots.

Was gonna respond on last thread, but willow time.

Anyway, that was an interesting time in Hollywood with factions pulling in different directions. WB, for instance, simply didn't want to cut themselves off from the German market, so they did things like all but eliminating mention of Dreyfus' Jewish heritage in The Life of Emile Zola. On the other end was Chaplin who made The Great Dictator which ended with a plea to fight Hitler all but directly.

In David Fincher's Mank, it's a small plot point designed to shit on Louis B. Mayer (head of MGM) and make Mank into some kind of secular saint.

What I'm talking about is his presidency. We had 3+ years of real prosperity, low inflation, low prices, a border as secure as it's been, no foreign wars, relative and increasing peace in the middle east, no Russian aggression, no Chinese aggression, relatively safe and secure streets, etc. What's not to like?? Even if you hate the guy personally, wasn't even leftwing Democraps' lives better under Trump??

That last year was a doozy, though.

Most of the disingenuous people put the blame for the entirety of that year on Trump, to support their claim that he was a failure.

I put blame on him for (as he often did) getting rolled by the bureaucrats and pushing the dangerous vaccine, but he clearly isn't a failure simply for that.

#2. FEBRUARY 19, 2024, Statement from President Joe Biden on the Day of Remembrance of Japanese American Incarceration, HOME, BRIEFING ROOM, STATEMENTS AND RELEASES

On this day in 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which led to the forcible incarceration of over 120,000 Americans of Japanese descent - half of whom were children. It was shameful. Families were separated. Communities were torn apart. People were stripped of their dignity. And the unconstitutional and unconscionable policy was even upheld by the Supreme Court.

"that government of the people, by the people, for the people,” should not perish from the earth. It is difficult to imagine anything more untrue. The Union soldiers in that battle actually fought against self-determination; it was the Confederates who fought for the right of their people to govern themselves. What was the practical effect of the battle of Gettysburg? What else than the destruction of the old sovereignty of the States, i. e., of the people of the States? The Confederates went into battle an absolutely free people; they came out with their freedom subject to the supervision and vote of the rest of the country—and for nearly twenty years that vote was so effective that they enjoyed scarcely any freedom at all. It's very good and definitely worth watching. The 2 part interview that Benz did with Epoch Times happened last year and is probably the reason the Tucker interview happened.

Benz worked in cyber at the State Dept. He knows exactly what happened and it is way bigger than people think. The fact that Trump survived his presidency is a miracle let alone what he was able to accomplish.

I don;t care if he is a RINO, it will make no difference if there is a D in the seat except and this is a huge except, the majority gets to determine the make up of committees. I was willing to give him plenty of credit for the first 3 years, but it's not how you start, it's how you finish. For me, he'll always be the man who presided over the death of the republic.

315 If that were the case, the recent border bill would have passed.

Yeah? Because only if you're actually being dragged off into the night are you suffering under a dictatorship?

Do European countries have freedom? They can be jailed for speech, but most of the time people say what they please.

We've been fighting against, and losing to, this approach for decades around here. And it's only getting worse.

Never say never. There is always a chance if you don't give up.

321 Re scrutinizing GOP primaries: At the moment, there are 57 Reps and only 5 Dems in the WY House of Representatives. There are only 23,000 registered Dem voters left in the entire state, so you KNOW that some of them became Republicans to prop up Liz Cheney in her losing 2022 re-election primary bid. And thus, a some of those 57 reps are really Dems in disguise. Like Dan Bongino says, some Reps are really Dems, but no Dems are really Reps.

322 One of my alma maters opened a campus in some Middle Eastern hellhole, I don't recall which. This mad frenzy of universities to rush over there and bend over for them disgusted me when it started. Glad to see at least one Board of Regents thinks better of it.
