Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Gun Thread: Content Lite Edition!![]() A: No, just an observation. I have been wrestling with a big project at work since about June and it wraps up this coming week. After that, my schedule should hopefully return to something approaching normal, and I will be able to spend more time on the Gun Thread and maybe even see if I remember where WeaselAcres is located to do some shooting. I promise I will go through the neglected email inbox and get caught up soon. As always, thanks for your patience! With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we? Range Time! Who has been to the range? Why, our pal Blake has not only been to the range, but he was shooting in a match too! ![]() ![]() After a 2 month layoff from shooting (I hate it when real life gets in the way of what's important: shooting) I managed make my second 1,000 match. After working the pit, I set up, and, slowed everyone down because I'm not quite as organized as I should have been. Next time I'll be better prepared, I swear! Anyway, I checked my log book and dialed in the elevation value I had noted from my first match. "Groovy" thought I. First shot...nowhere to be found. Say what? Finally, after my 4th sighter shot, I was on paper and ready to roll. (I noted this value too. My first match required 35.5 MOA elevation. This match, because weather conditions were so different from the first time, required 38.25 MOA of elevation.) I started shooting for score, and the wind absolutely ate me alive. However, this was not completely unexpected as the wind around here can be vicious. I also had trouble with my shots being a bit "all over the place" high, and low, etc. I finally realized I was letting the rifle run me rather than me run the rifle. Once I settled in and took firm control, things got a lot better with shot placement. The most unnerving part of the shoot, though was compensating for the wind. I was lining up my cross hairs on the slot between the targets in order put shots in the 9 and 10 ring. These targets are 72" x 72" which means I was holding a solid 38" to the left to hit center. And, because the wind is so variable here, dialing windage really isn't recommended. (Yeah, my last few shots saved my score, relatively speaking.) I had expected to regress a bit due to beginners luck the first time I shot. Surprisingly, I shot a 75, which was only 4 points behind my first time out and under conditions which were quite adverse compared to the first time. From a score standpoint, I regressed but, on the other hand, I think I made progress in that I got a little better handle on dealing with wind.Congratulations, Blake! I am sure by now you have decided that competition will quickly make you a more better shooter! A couple of thoughts ; recording atmospheric conditions in the form of density altitude each time you shoot can help you develop solid range data for a particular rifle/ammo combination, and wind reading is an art and converting what you read to a firing solution is a science. When everything goes to shit, stop shooting and go back to the fundamentals.! Nice job! Descent Into Madness Our pal RI Red needs help! ![]() Sunday AM following a rainy Saturday outing. Good evening everyone!!
Blake, do you have a Kestrel? That along with ballistic software can be very helpful getting dialed in. Especially since it will measure things in real time that you cannot. You can set up a profile for your rifle and just tell it what ammo you are using and it will spill out at minimum how much elevation you need to dial in. Then, as Weasel said, once you start hitting the target write down the Density Altitude, ammo type and other information to get your DOPE. You can then use that in the future if you find you are in similar conditions. Posted by: Scuba Dude at February 18, 2024 07:09 PM (f0/sc) 15

I have been wrestling with a big project at work since about June and it wraps up this coming week.
I feel you, Weasel-san. Probably same amount of time on a project, deployed the software last weekend, and we broke it hard. Took all weekend to just get it partly going again. Then we worked long days all week to fix the major induced problems - deployed Friday night. I did go shooting in the middle of that. Worked on my 1911s. My carry 1911 started having FTEs the more ammo I put through it. Is this me relaxing too much? Or might I have a spring problem - that it's just not stiff enough? My full-size 1911 worked just fine. I do need work on trigger squeeze - still anticipating too much. But getting better. And, honestly, I'm just going to shoot bad guys 1-handed - it's much easier and more accurate. Really really really crowded at the range again. Waited an hour to get lanes. When we encouraged people to learn to shoot, buy ammo, practice regularly, I didn;t mean for all these people to show up at MY range. My lovely lilac lavender Glock arrived at my FFL weeks earlier than expected but have to wait 7 days to get it. Did get to see it in person however and it is just as pretty as I expected, the color being subtle, and when I picked it up, felt like a perfect fit. Can't wait to get it to the range. Visited Virginia Museum of War (highly recommended - lots of gubs). One exhibit showed a Springfield "Trapdoor" Carbine, model 1884. It was widely used by US Cavalry - including Gen Custer and his troop at the Battle of Little Bighorn.
In the after-action review of the battle, the gun was found to be a problem because it wasn't ejecting the copper bullet casings properly. Firing the gun produced heat which caused the casings to expand. After the battle, the Army switched to brass. Dunno if that would have made a decisive difference, but guessing it didn't help the outcome. Never heard that story before. Posted by: TRex at February 18, 2024 07:17 PM (ol7iy) 34

Accounting for windage is an art all by itself. The first instinct is that a moderate wind can't possibly affect the shot all that much. Found that the opposite was the case, through trial and error. Great story, Blake. Posted by: Notorious BFD at February 18, 2024 07:18 PM (V8he0) 37

CA SB 1106 is a new gun registry law going thru the legislation right now. The author of it says (with air quotes) that it isn't a registry-registry but still you have to detail everything you own, annually. With a fee for each, naturally. I predict massive non-compliance.

Brief range report. My shooting buddy who a month ago asked why anyone would own a Glock now has a G42 so he can get a threaded barrel for a 380. I am not sure why he would want that.....but anyway it shot fine and was eminently capable. And square. Really square. I still don't like it. I brought my G2C and put 100 rounds of 115g through it. As always, it ate anything I fed it. I tried working on speed but my trigger finger needs some work. On slow fire I can put 12 rounds in a 2" circle but they string low when I go too fast (using more than my fingertip I suspect). The G2C is stripped and cleaned and now back to content. Biden, in fact, makes his debut in our rankings at No. 14, putting him in the top third of American presidents. Trump, meanwhile, maintains the position he held six years ago: dead last, trailing such historically calamitous chief executives as James Buchanan and Andrew Johnson. In that and other respects, Trump’s radical departure from political, institutional and legal norms has affected knowledgeable assessments not just of him but also of Biden and several other presidents. Y'all, I went to the range yesterday! Tried a new-to-me indoor range about 20 minutes away. Nice range, very nice (and hot) range dudes (most too young for moi, though). Range fees a little pricey on the weekends, but they have chicks-shoot-free Wednesdays just like PSA.
Anyway, I wasn't expecting much out of myself, since I haven't shot at all since TX. I was pretty solid with the 1911, not terrible with the P365, and I put 12 rounds through the 1917 revolver just for funsies. My ammo stash is sadly depleted, so I didn't shoot a lot, just enough to knock some of the rust off. I have not regressed as badly as I feared, but I know I won't ever get better if I only shoot every 4 months... Posted by: screaming in digital at February 18, 2024 07:35 PM (1eY81) 67

This week I took the Century Arms Galil out for a couple hundred rounds. Yes, it's marked "Galil" even though Century Arms was sued and had to change the stamping to "Golani". This rifle was bought used some years ago and the trigger is off the charts at almost 2 pounds. I polished the feed ramp and did a little bevel work to the chamber entrance as the feed ramp is a little low due to the drunk monkeys who worked at Century Arms back in the day. Slapped an AK 74 type muzzle brake on her from CNC Warrior some time ago and it has worked quite well and looks exotic enough.
She runs like a scalded dog and is very accurate out to 500 yards. On par with any AR I have. She likes the IMI Orlite mags as well as the IDF surplus metal mags which is a big plus. Posted by: Hairyback Guy at February 18, 2024 07:37 PM (R/m4+) 70

Thinking of changing the route I normally would take. Posted by: Scuba Dude at February 18, 2024 07:28 PM (f0/sc) Hi Scoob. Waze gave me two asymmetric routes on my route down and my route back in 2021. The route down took me to Champaign, IL, and then down I-57 aaaaaaallllll the way through Illinois, which was uncomfortable for me given the way I was traveling. The route back took me more diagonally, through Memphis, Nashville, Louisville, and Cincinnati. That's the route Google Maps showed me just now. Definitely preferable to the Illinois {spit} routing. Then, he applied modern ballistics and forensics to ID and track the movement of individual weapons across the battlefield. He concluded that the primary reason that Custer lost was because the Sioux and Cheyenne infiltrated close enough to the L Company positions on Calhoun Hill to neutralize the Springfield's strength in effective range with their firepower advantage from Winchester and Henry rifles. This triggered a rout, which led to a relatively quick collapse of Custer's defense. L Company's 40 troopers may have faced as many as 100 repeaters that day on Calhoun Hill from at least two directions. Posted by: Ed L at February 18, 2024 07:41 PM (yRXSd) 83

Rented a P226 Zev - a P226 to Legion spec plus some other tricks from Zev technologies. Also a factory mounted Romeo One Pro red dot. We also had two other P226s on deck my West German and Ed L.'s Mk 25. The Zev looked awesome but had a fatal flaw - the dot was so far off you couldn't get your shots on paper. I dialed it to the limits of adjustibility and it was still far off - and the optic precluded use of iron sights. Apparently abused as a rental. But gave me ome quality time with my West German 226. My targets are improving. I am getting used to the remarkable agility of firing a 9mm semiautomatic in single-action mode. The percentage of shots that I know were bad before I hear the bang is way too high, but at least I know which ones were the good shots. I feel motivated -- no, excited. I want to get good at this, whatever it takes. I was, once, but it was with .22 rifles. I used to wonder why people thought they needed 6,000 rounds of ammo. I picked up two new gubs: A stainless Colt Python with a 2.5" barrel and one of the new blued Pythons with a 6" barrel. Due to today's long wait time at the range, I didn't get a chance to zero them. Instead, we shot at some close range targets and compared them with a couple of vintage Pythons. The new 2.5" snubbie shot fairly well at 10 yards in double action. It's not a precision shooter, but it's not meant to do that in double action. In single action, it can do pretty well at 10 yards. The 6" barreled blue Python did pretty well against the zombie target Sharon brought. I substituted a vintage rubber Pachmyr Presentation grip for the new wood laminate grips from the factory because I think the rubber gives me a better grip with .357 Magnum rounds. Compared to the vintage Royal Blue Python finish, the new blue finish is a distant second. But by modern 2024 standards, it's pretty good. I'm surprised that Colt's MSRP on the blued Python models is only $1599. I expected it to be significantly more than that.

I won't be using it for a long, long time but I just bought a Howa M1500 APC flag-chassis bolt-action rifle ["precision long range" one store here calls them] in 6.5 Creedmoor.
It was $620 off, circa Cdn $1,400; came with a 'free' bipod [although I understand sandbags are better for steadying]; has a muzzle break; two 10-round magazines [allowed for bolt-actions here, even in larger-calibre ammo]; and had the short Picatinny rail also included to take its [eventual] scope. Similar rifles e.g. Tikka were 75-150% more expensive; didn't have all the same accouterments; and had smaller magazines. Quite the suggested breaking-in process as shown below ironically, given the above comment, using copper-jacketed ammo suggested: http://tinyurl.com/439x8nxa 14:01 minutes Posted by: andycanuck (2yu8s) at February 18, 2024 07:57 PM (2yu8s) 121

Has anyone had really good luck with a build? I want sub MOA, otherwise I'll just do a new boltie. Posted by: RI Red --------- A bolt action is more likely to be consistently sub MOA with different ammo. ARs, like most other semi auto rifles, requires fidding with different ammo to get its best results much like .22 LRs do. Three critical components of an accurate AR requiring quality are the bolt, the barrel, the trigger. Don't skimp on quality there. Stocks are highly personalized but easily replaced so I would consider a basic A2 type stock at first if average height. Last but not least, consider putting an adjustable gas block on it (the better ones, not the cheapos) as this allows you to easily tune the gas system for different ammo. The buffer method is not recommended unless you like tinkering and expense. Posted by: whig at February 18, 2024 07:58 PM (9FrDg) 123

Posted by: Ed L ---------- Modern methods of polishing give you a decent finish which is why blued mass production firearms aren't appreciably higher. The Royal Blue pythons or the double diamond stainless required master polishers with years of experience to produce and that expertise is now gone at Colt. The flame blued Colts will never be duplicated as they used flaming gasoline baths to do it which the EPA would have a stroke over. There are a few people out there that can duplicate the Royal Blue quality but they are pricey specialists with long waiting lists. Posted by: whig at February 18, 2024 08:03 PM (9FrDg) 135

I visited Little Bighorn a few times in the mid-90s when I was in Rapid City, SD. At the time, the "official" history of the battle given by the NPS was more akin to that shown in Errol Flynn's portrayal of Custer in 1941's "They Died With Their Boots On." I will do that. But how dirty should my 1911 get in one outing? I cleaned it right before ... oh, my last range trip.
And I was getting stovepipes and stuff that just didn't back out far enough. I also had one failure to fire. Dimpled primer. Dumped it in the "Live Rounds" bucket at the range. (Should that be a plastic bucket?) Posted by: GWB --------- GWB, different ammo? Stove piping is caused by not enough energy to push the expelled case into the ejector (not extractor) with force. A weak recoil spring will normally cause the slide to move too fast and you end up getting double feeds, or no feed from the mag. A firing pin spring that is too worn or a dirty firing pin channel can result in the dimpled primer or the ammo can have too hard a primer (cheap import ammo can be particularly bad about it). The Colt Custom Shop offers Royal Blue as an option for 1911s and SAAs. It isn't cheap. Royal Blue on an SAA will set you back almost $3,500. That alone is the MSRP of a new, but plain SAA from Colt. Bedding a barrel on an AR refers to using Locktite or similar when attaching the barrel to the upper receiver.
Not 'glassing' the handguards. Posted by: Duncanthrax ------- That is only used by people that care to burn up their barrel through competitive shooting seasons--essentially you are permanently attaching the upper to the barrel. Competitive shooters with high round counts do it because they had sponsors and the cost of the barrel and upper is pennies compared to ammo costs. FWIW, MTU shooters used to bed the upper receiver into the lower one with epoxy compounds. If you properly torque an AR barrel or AR10 barrel, you seldom have problems with accuracy if you lap the upper receiver area to concentricity prior to barrel installation. The joker in AR accuracy is the bolt lug engagement with the barrel extension. Like an accurized bolt rifle, lug engagement needs to be equal across the lugs and somewhere around 80 percent or so at least. AR's with poor bolt lug engagement will throw fliers and often the bolt will not last as long. Weird designs like dual extractors can be worse in that case as AR bolts are a consumable and meant to be replaced on a regular basis. Posted by: whig at February 18, 2024 08:19 PM (9FrDg) 159
Dry fire practice can help significantly between range time so you get the most out of the range time. Especially for revolvers shooting double action or any other stiff trigger.
Posted by: whig --- I used to be in the habit of doing penny drills with the Sig. I'm not sure why, but I have never done dry fire drills with my revolvers. I do have snap caps in all the needed calibers. Posted by: screaming in digital at February 18, 2024 08:19 PM (1eY81) 160
GWB, yes, I think you’re right. There is no industry standard AR 10, so I think you can’t mix and match very much. I’ll take a look at BearCreek.

Fox's book also includes numerous maps which plot the locations of shell casings, bullets, memorial markers, and more on the Little Bighorn battlefield. Walking the battlefield with those maps in hand really helped me understand how Fox came to his conclusions about the battle, and how the Hollywood/dime novel version held up as "fact" for over a century was little more than a fairy tale. The Nurse's kids and kid-in-law came shooting. The new addition to the family wanted to try a Glock 17 and "other inexpensive handguns for home defense". So...I brought a bag full for people to try
G17, XD9, M&P Compact, PSA Dagger, P-07, P-10C, TP-9SF. The CZ P-10c got good marks for ergos and trigger but the aggressive stippling was not enjoyed. Second place went to the PSA Dagger, to my surprise and quiet enjoyment (I do love that gun) and third went to the CZ P-07. It was interesting seeing everyone try the pistols and seeing what clicked with people and what did not. Some surprises there. The 1911 in .45 also had good results but there was confusion with the external safety and the single action operation. AR-10 patterns, fwiw, are the DMPS low, DMPS high, and the original Armalite design. PSA uses DMPS low uppers, Aero Precision uses DMPS high. Neither of these will work with the original Armalite AR10 uppers.
There is also specification creep as unlike the original AR-15-M-16 where the specs are well understood, people making the AR-10's are less consistent between uppers and lowers even within the DMPS stds. Buy your upper and lower from the same source to avoid troubles in AR10 land. Not necessary really in AR-15 land. Posted by: whig at February 18, 2024 08:30 PM (9FrDg) 178

Posted by: MD_Mike Get some match commercial ammo first to establish if there are any issues with the rifle that need to be addressed as far as accuracy. Then, it depends on what powder and what bullets are required (if there is no such power factor or the like in the competition or limitations on bullets). The .223/5.56 accuracy depends on bullet quality and brass prep consistency with the appropriate powders for the bullet weight you are firing. GWB,
One other thing that can sometimes cause issues but is rare today is the chamber. A rough chamber will make it harder to extract which can cause stove pipes, etc. as it slows the slide velocity. A dirty chamber, particularly one with a carbon/brass ring close to the throat can also give problems with excess effort by the slide to extract the cartridge. Can be hard to see in a rifle but with the barrel out of the 1911, should be much easier to see and diagnose. Posted by: whig at February 18, 2024 08:46 PM (9FrDg) 200

Last month a guy at the range who turned out to be a SEAL sniper instructor had one 'a them Garmin chronos.
As usual with the guys who have the wild precision rifle set-ups, I made a point to go ask him about his gear during a cease-fire. He had one of those amazing looking custom rifles, was shooting prone of course. To his left on a small tripod stood a gadget just bigger than a cigarette pack (more or less). The Garmin chrono. He said it was easier to use than the LabRadar. I chided him of course for not having the electronic target set-up (which several of the precision shooters who come to the range have), so he had to rely on a spotting scope. He was just testing loads (caliber was 6 Dasher, which I'd never heard of, but Weasel says is quite the teen craze among many distance shooters). Saying that canister/grapeshot turns a cannon into a giant shotgun is not an exaggeration. The impact of that round on tightly packed ranks of infantry is literally devastating. 173 ... "Any reloaders in the house? My FIL gave me his old RCBS single stage press and "all the fixin's" - all I really need are dies. "
A few suggestions which I'm sure others here will make. Start with a general reloading book like "The ABC's of Reloading. In my opinion, the single stage press is the best way to learn since each operation is distinct. Prices for dies are all over the place. FWIW, I've used Lee Precision dies for decades: less expensive but excellent quality. Use loading data from good manuals, like the one for the bullets you will load, or from the powder company sites. (You can find all sorts of loading info on various sites but stick with the official sites. There is a reason Weasel doesn't allow powder charges to be listed in the comments.) Also, check out YT videos to see the actual process. If possible, it is easier to learn reloading with straight wall revolver cartridges like 38 special. Bottle neck cases like .223 are a bit more complicated, especially if trying for serious, consistent accuracy. Above all, take your time both in learning and doing. I won't say "it's easy" (honestly I hate it when people tell me that, because it's NOT easy for me, at least not the first time, or the second... maybe by the 100th time it will be, lol). But considering everything you have already learned, I have absolute confidence in you. If you can get blaster or Ed or SD to look over your shoulder the first time, do that. Following the videos is awkward because I have to pause and rewind about a hundred times, even if I slow down the playback. And the video can't correct what I'm doing wrong. Sharon's Kimber has a full length guide rod that protrudes under the barrel when the slide is locked to the rear. GI M1911s don't have that. The full length guide rod does improve accuracy by tightening up the slide's movement, but it also makes field stripping and reassembly to clean the firearm a real PITA. I have a Colt Commander in .45 with the same feature. It's such a PITA to put back together again that I'm thinking about putting in a factory guide rod and recoil spring plug. I'm not 100% convinced that gains in accuracy are worth the additional pain in taking the thing apart and putting it back together again. Posted by: Ed L at February 18, 2024 09:10 PM (yRXSd) 228

Things were getting so bad, I only shot 30 rounds out of a 50rd box before I gave up and switched back to the .45 1911. Posted by: GWB --------- GWB, After you clean it, I meant use some self defense type rounds to check for function. A box of twenty or so should do it and it can be an off brand like Prvi Partisan, Winchester Silvertip, Federal's cheap line hollow point line, Hi Shok, etc. Most good 115gr range ammo should be in the 1200-1250 fps range which is on the box. Posted by: RI Red -------- Lapping the chamber as you did can improve function. A few diy folks get a bit overenthusiastic with it and create new problems. One of the expenses of the premium barrels is that you are paying someone else (an expert) to lap it properly. That is one reason cheaper barrels can be hit or miss. Having the chambers polished is also recommended for someone that uses a revolver for self defense or competition. Makes extracting spent cartridges much easier particularly on something like a snubby that does not have a full length extraction rod. Posted by: whig at February 18, 2024 09:23 PM (9FrDg) 245

I am not sure what is going on with this pistol - it is not getting fully back into battery when swa shoots - it is about a 1/4 inch off and a light push with a thumb gets it fully seated. I have not heard that the 1911 is prone to limpwristing but I have not had this behavior when I shoot it. BUT - swa shoots it more than I do so maybe just lucky. There are some shiny spots on the feed ramp and at the top edge where it transitions to the chamber.
I'm not sure about a carbon ring.... Posted by: GWB A cheap borelight (led with a flexible shaft) can make diagnosing chamber and throat problems easier. A carbon/fouling ring can be seen right at the step where the cartridge headspaces and the bullet chamber is. Fouling can build up in that area especially with cheap range ammo as it is often dirty due to incomplete powder burn, is a ball type that has graphite all around it and dirty, and inconsistent in brass measurement which introduces different burning of the powder in cartridge to cartridge. Usually looks solid black and the ring can be hard enough to require soaking the whole barrel in solvent (or using tougher carbon solvents). Posted by: whig at February 18, 2024 09:29 PM (9FrDg) 259

I am not sure what is going on with this pistol - it is not getting fully back into battery when swa shoots - it is about a 1/4 inch off and a light push with a thumb gets it fully seated.
Same thing happens with different ammo? If you unload it and ease the slide down sloooowly, can you make it hang up at the same place or feel a hitch before it closes? If you remove the barrel and drop in a loaded round, does it plunk in easily? Posted by: Oddbob at February 18, 2024 09:38 PM (sNc8Y) 275

Getting the slide stop back in is the hardest part. MILSPEC M1911s were designed to have some slop/looseness by design to make it easier for the soldier to get that slide stop pin through the hole of the barrel link. But the "accuracy improvements" made by many commercial manufacturers and gunsmiths removed that looseness in search of greater accuracy. The price of that is that there's no room for error when it comes to reinserting that slide stop pin through that barrel link. If that barrel link or the full length guide rod it's next to moves out of position by just a hair, you have to take it all apart and start reassembling the pistol all over again. One 'dirty' secret about 9mm ammo is the 'published' velocities on the box are out of a 4" barrel. As barrel length decreases, you'll see velocity loss, particularly out of the micros, such as the P365's 3.1" barrel.
Sig and Speer are two that I'm aware of that make 'short barrel' ammo. Finding some can be a quest, however. Posted by: Duncanthrax at February 18, 2024 09:40 PM (a3Q+t) Posted by: blaster at February 18, 2024 09:40 PM (IFNME) 280

This tip is for those new to firearms.
Don't buy a target firearm for self defense. Reliability is more important than accuracy and to do that, specs have to be relaxed on the chamber, throat and barrel so that it will feed reliably with a wide range of ammunition. Target weapons are also generally more expensive and the sad fact is most people cannot shoot up to its inherent accuracy without a lot of training. In general, what you want is a reliable brand name firearm that has been around (stay away from "new models" as you are the Quality Assurance/beta tester person) and mechanical problems with a firearm makes learning to shoot a misery. For some, if you prefer the least amount of training to actually function with the firearm, a revolver is a good choice as it requires little maintenance, will shoot all sorts of ammo that fit the chamber, and you do not have to learn a complicated method of operation aka manual at arms--to load, unload, and operate. Semi automatic pistols require more a bit more investment in learning to operate the control surfaces, (safety, slidelock, magazine eject) than do revolvers but you get greater ammo capacity, lighter weight, etc. Posted by: whig at February 18, 2024 09:47 PM (9FrDg) 287

With the chatter on Gettysburg - I'm about 45 min away from there and the town proper is always worth a visit. Took my parents (last time they were visiting from AZ) to the site of Pickett's Charge, then went to the town - tried some flights of cider at Ploughman Cider Taproom - VERY good cider - can't recommend the spot enough. Does the 124gr run with a bit more oomph? It's loaded a tiny bit hotter, right?
Posted by: GWB ------ NATO spec'ed 124 gr ammo is above what the domestic 115 gr is loaded in pressure. At the high end of the 9mm scale. Works better with Euro makes and in service size or larger pistols but can be a bit unpleasant in compact or microcompact. 124 gr range ammo often runs about the same speed as 115 gr range ammo but with a heavier bullet it usually generates a bit higher pressure in the chamber when burning. That can make it cleaner and the slide momentum generated often works a bit better with some firearms than does the 115gr, Posted by: whig at February 18, 2024 09:55 PM (9FrDg) 303

Grateful,
Whig is absolutely correct. If you aren't going to, or aren't able to, train or practice with your firearm very much, a revolver is far easier to learn how to use. Just drop the rounds in the chambers, close the cylinder, and squeeze the trigger. Semi-auto pistols require more learning from you (how to load the magazine, how to chamber a round, how to disassemble/assemble, etc.). But semi-auto pistols are (I think) easier to master than a revolver. Next time you come to the range w/ us, I'll bring a revolver and I'll show you what I mean. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon -------------- Military type pistols are often some of the most reliable in operation. Some will have trouble though with hollow point ammo depending on the bullet ogive and the feeding ramp and throat of the barrel. AOP, I think CDNN Sports in Abilene did have some P38 parts including even slides available that they bought surplus for relatively peanuts. Might be able to get some springs etc. for parts cheap there. Posted by: whig at February 18, 2024 10:01 PM (9FrDg) 314

Posted by: whig at February 18, 2024 10:01 PM (9FrDg) Well, I don't think this one needs any parts at the moment. I did buy a couple of extra magazines, and they all work. Recoil springs mainly. Wolff springs are sold at most gunparts emporiums online but they offer a lot of complete gun spring kits for specific firearms.

Bear Creek AR-10 receivers are low profile, like PSA. They'll fit just fine.
Posted by: ck at February 18, 2024 08:25 PM (ljHmZ) There is also specification creep as unlike the original AR-15-M-16 where the specs are well understood, people making the AR-10's are less consistent between uppers and lowers even within the DMPS stds. Buy your upper and lower from the same source to avoid troubles in AR10 land. Not necessary really in AR-15 land. Posted by: whig at February 18, 2024 08:30 PM (9FrDg) I have a PSA AR10 lower and a BCA side charging upper and they won't mate. I would need to file on either the upper or the lower to get a complete closure. I cannot say about a rear charging upper. That might be different.
