The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

I think that this is really an extraordinary, unusual circumstance that the law-abiding and rule-following New Yorkers who are business people have nothing to worry about because they’re very different than Donald Trump and his behavior, New York Governor "Karen" Hochul

Quote II

"Minnesota has a reputation and long history of protecting LGBTQ people. That reputation is the crux of this." Aaron Zimmerman, executive director of the LGBTQ nonprofit PFund Foundation

Quote III

“So how can you take — as leader — how do you take an issue where the American people support us and lead us into a box, where now, when a bill is produced, it is worse than doing nothing. When that’s rejected, we get blamed. I mean, you got to work overtime to screw that up.” US Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI)

I am so shocked. I never imagined that this person would be accused of something so dastardly.

Wisconsin Human Resource Director Arrested on Child Porn and Exploitation Charges

The human resource director for Outagamie County, Wisconsin was arrested on Friday in connection with possession of child pornography and sexual exploitation of a child. Adam Westbrook, an alleged member of the Brew City “Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence,” faces four counts for each offense.

According to Fox 11, Westbrook was taken into custody in Neenah following a search warrant executed by multiple agencies, including the Neenah Police Department and the State Department of Justice as part of a larger Kenosha County investigation.

Libs of TikTok broke the news on X, reporting that Westbrook is an “anti-Catholic drag queen” in his spare time.

And while we are discussing the abomination of mankind, Did you hear what happened at St. Patrick's Cathedral?

Catholic officials in New York held a Mass of Reparation on Saturday following what it called “scandalous behavior” at a Thursday funeral for Cecilia Gentili, an atheist transgender woman and former sex worker lauded by mourners as the “mother of all whores.”

Gentili died Feb. 6 at age 52 of undisclosed causes.

The Feb. 15 service drew a crowd estimated at more than 1,000 to St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan, one of the most prominent Catholic parishes in the nation. The funerals of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, baseball legend George Herman “Babe” Ruth, and several World Trade Center 9/11 first responders have been held there, and the structure is a Fifth Avenue landmark.

I wonder if Denmark is up to date on their NATO membership fees. They are making an interesting contribution to Ukraine.

Denmark to send its 'entire artillery' to Ukraine, the country's prime minister says

Denmark is sending all of its artillery to Ukraine, the Danish prime minister has said.

Mette Frederiksen made the announcement while speaking at the Munich Security Conference.

It comes as Ukraine faces severe munitions shortages.

B.C. cancels company's operating licence after 6 overpass strikes
Transportation Minister Rob Fleming says 'most severe' action required to send message

The province says it's prohibited a transportation company from operating in B.C. after it was involved in six overpass strikes in three years.

A statement sent at 6 a.m. PT from B.C.'s Transportation Minister Rob Fleming said, in the interest of safety, a formal cancellation notice was issued to Chohan Freight Forwarders Ltd. for its operations in B.C. on Thursday.

The province had previously suspended the carrier following an overpass strike on Highway 99 in late December. On a provincial list of the overpass strikes that have occurred since December 2021, Chohan is named six times out of 34 total strikes.

Now we know why there are "No return" policies. Genius Award Winner.

EBRUARY 18--Mitchell Cooper Vest is 6’ 6” tall, weighs 250 pounds, and is known to wear a kilt.

Which made it easier for Texas business owners to identify Vest, 60, as the man who recently came into their antique stores and shoved various items up his rectum before placing them “back on the shelf for display,” according to Texas court records.

Police allege that Vest (pictured below) entered several shops in Spring, a Houston suburb, last week and engaged in criminal mischief, a misdemeanor.

Specifically, cops say, Vest first entered the “Antique Gallery of Houston” and placed a makeup brush and a “Restoration Hardware piece” in his anus before returning the merchandise, valued at $130, to the shelf.

Vest then showed up at “The Curiosity Shop,” which is located inside an antiques mall. The shop’s owner, Alisha Osborne, told police that Vest took an antique bottle opener and a “Tobacco Tent Can” (total value: $74) and “placed them into his anus under his green skirt/kilt, then returned the items to the shelf.”

156 Bottom article of the century in Vanity Fair:

It seems that DOCTOR Jill Biden is concerned about Her Place In History.

She convened a panel of historians to do this:

The group gathered in the Blue Room in April 2022, a week after the Gridiron Dinner. Under the watchful eyes of portraits of William Taft, James Monroe, and John Tyler, the First Lady opened the discussion by explaining that she had been unable to think about her role in traditional terms. The political violence of the January 6 attack on the United States Capitol Building, coupled with the coronavirus pandemic, she said, had rerouted her ambitions. She told the group that what she saw during her campaign travel was “a nation that needed to heal” from the shock of a pandemic and the rawness of a divisive political season.

Shawn mentioned something interesting - that growing variance in how normal people rate movies on Rotten Tomatoes vs reviewers is yet another sign of the growing separation between our select selected elites and normal people. A very small, banal one but a very interesting one none the less.

231 On the Denmark story, sending all your artillery to another country for others to use could bite you on the ass. Is the entire world going crazy at once?

Shows that they don't actually think that Russia will attack NATO, no matter what their rhetoric says.

One potential war scenario is for the Russians to seize the Danish island of Bornholm, 225 miles from Kaliningrad.

During the Cold War, the Danish army stationed a brigade on the island, but it was removed after the Cold War, leaving only local cops.

There were mutterings after the invasion of Ukraine to put the military back on Bornholm, but I'm not sure if they've done anything.

The Russians found that anti-tank weapons were very, very effective early in the war.

Our and Ukraine's military leadership learned NOTHING from that, sent a bunch of tanks to the front and...lost most of them just like the Russians before them.

Differing in situ values have been reported for the average temperature on Mars,[23] with a common value being −63 °C (210 K; −81 °F).
Surface temperatures may reach a high of about 20 °C (293 K; 68 °F) at noon, at the equator, and a low of about −153 °C (120 K; −243 °F) at the poles.[26]

Actual temperature measurements at the Viking landers' site range from −17.2 °C (256.0 K; 1.0 °F) to −107 °C (166 K; −161 °F). The warmest soil temperature estimated by the Viking Orbiter was 27 °C (300 K; 81 °F).[27]

Mars clearly had an atmosphere at some time, and had liquid water on the surface. If the loss of atmosphere took millions of years to happen, and we "rebuilt" it, presumably it would take millions of year to lose the rebuilt version. If we can get a few thousand good years out of the rebuild, there is plenty of time to worry about keeping it up.

Mars had a thick atmosphere in the ancient past, with surface water and all that.

It can hold onto a thicker atmosphere (at least on hundreds of millions of years timescales). The problem is no magnetic field (well, none to speak of big enough) and no shield again all the solar and cosmic ray radiation over these long time scales.

That would tend to break apart O2 molecules.

==============

You've given me an idea for a sci-fi or weird creepy story: People are teaching, researching, etc, at an institution on a small-ish island where local farmers grow the food, raise the livestock, and fishermen supply fresh fish. The principals (at the institution) are doing something very important. The Project is everything. It will have a huge impact on earth and al people. 374 You've given me an idea for a sci-fi or weird creepy story: People are teaching, researching, etc, at an institution on a small-ish island where local farmers grow the food, raise the livestock, and fishermen supply fresh fish. The principals (at the institution) are doing something very important. The Project is everything. It will have a huge impact on earth and al people. There are government liaisons on the campus and half the people there have won significant prizes. Of course, they take a patronizing but kind attitude to the maintenance workers and food-producers on the island.

My MO is to put such things into my Amazon shopping list, and then buy it somewhere else. I have a Chromebook that I'm pretty sure cannot make any sense of what I might buy or even who I am, other than possibly more than three people of at least 3 different age groups and/or races using the same Chromebook. 399 I should probably point out that the Old Cat is recognized by everyone who has ever met her as being unusually awful and a terrible 'pet'. People who perceive all cats, if one is being terrible, as simply 'misunderstood', has not met the psychotic street rescue of flailing razor wire that is Hissy Fit.
She is flatly a horrid animal and probably if taken in anywhere else would have been disposed of in short order. Hissy Fit is not misunderstood, she is just a horrible person.
She's sent me to the doctor twice: her thing is hooking a claw into a finger joint, for no reason at all, and penetrating the synovial fluid. Yeah.
She's an excellent killer, and if I die in my house she will commence to eating me immediately.

402 Len, no guarantees here, but there are some feline mood-altering medications that vets have seen great success with. "Kitty Prozac," as my wife calls it, seems to work well with rescues that missed out on socialization because of their time in the wild.

403 "Kitty Prozac," as my wife calls it, seems to work well with rescues that missed out on socialization because of their time in the wild. Posted by: This Space Left Intentionally Blank'

This cat is now almost 15 years old and is just not really a 'pet' and never has been. It's probably okay for her life as I'm not very civilized either. In fact she was rescued as a kitten with 3 others, all of whom turned out to be delightful pets... except this one. The wild mother was a tortoiseshell, and had 4 kittens: a calico, an orange tabby, a black one, and another tortie, Hissy Fit.
Jet Black, Chessie, Colonel Mustard, and Hissy Fit.
In the divorce I got Hissy Fit because I'm the only one she'd even come near. From birth! all rescued at the same time, all raised in the same house. So I get the Bad One.

Posted by: LenNeal at February 20, 2024 02:29 AM (9yXr+)

404 Jet Black was a huge couch potato and loverboy, sit and he'd sit on you. Colonel Mustard was a gentle, terrific boy, loved to cuddle, never scratched even a small child. Chessie (named after The Chessie System Railroad) was named so because she'd sleep like a kitten on you.
Now, Hissy Fit.

She was a bitch from Day One and has never mellowed.
She got the Wildcat Genes and that's that.
She decided on entry I was 'Her Mans' (head swivel) and nobody else has ever even been able to handle her at all.

Posted by: LenNeal at February 20, 2024 02:34 AM (9yXr+)

405 Len Neal.

Torties are know as the most notorious of all the feral types. You chose, well.

My late Step Mom left behind a 16 y/o female tortie, who would routinely bite gums-deep into Step Mom's arm, for no reason at all.

That cat (Zipper), required a two man capture with blanket and carrier. And a sad end at the vets. No shelter would take in a proven, hard-wounding biter, of that cat's age. There was no "old cat retirement home" in the Orlando area, to take her in, either.

This is a cat that would not even deign sit in a lap, ANY lap, ever, since being rescued at 4 weeks old.

Haha! 'Zipper'. Sounds about right.
Hissy Fit's possible Greatest Hit was my rushing to work, and running into the basement to grab a work shirt out of the dryer and ambushing me on a small platform on the stairs, hooking my upper lip from the inside, and getting the claw stuck. For absolutely no discernable reason whatsoever.

Hilarity ensued.

408 I managed to convince the small one that since I was sleeping on the couch, she did not need to sleep on me. Her bigger older "brother," however, thinks I need a companion to take up half the couch. Until he decides to harass his "sister" about her litterbox habits, that is. Then it's an argument you can hear throughout the whole house, and a "MOMMMM SHE'S BEING MEAN TO MEEE!" howl the whole neighborhood can hear.

409 Morning, insomaniacals! Up earlier than I planned; last night's trick of rolling on my right side to get back to sleep did not work. 'Tis 48 degrees, almost no wind, so a good morning for a workout -- if I can muster the energy and motivation.

From the story above: What are "strikes"? Do they mean collisions by trucks with the structure of the overpasses?

410 "Pajama day at school"? When I was in grammar school, I wanted to dress like a grownup, not like a little kid. To this day when I'm off, I change into around-the-house clothes (jeans or khakis and a shirt with a collar) very soon after rising. Sitting around in pajamas was stuff you did, and do, when you're sick.

And the school *allows* this?

There is an addition, a fawn female rescue named Spatula Kitty, whom Hissy Fit despises. What I get now, as Spatula Kitty is not very bright (in fact, astoundingly stupid for a cat, long story) but quite strong; is, Hissy Fit picks fights with her new housemate and then realizes that if Spatula really wants to kick her ass she totally can. Spatula is a TANK. Hissy Fit has the skinny little crack-whore build of Torties, Spatula is barrel-shaped with short legs, huge claws, and a very broad head built like a lion. Anyway, I get shrieking about 'She pooped in MY litter box!" It's like preteen girls fighting over the bathroom to do makeup.

Posted by: LenNeal at February 20, 2024 03:08 AM (9yXr+)

412 Probably the trucks hitting the overpass, Wolfus. It's a Chiese-named company in BC, so they most likely don't care about safety or training.

417 If I see Hex start the fight and tiny Bel kicks his ass, I tell him flatly, "You started it."'

Hissy Fit picked a few fights with Spatula and that's when I had the sad realization that my cat is both a bully and a coward. She tried to push the new cat around and then Spatula, despite her low intellect (I mean it, you know dumb dogs? That's Spatula, but a cat; for months, she was baffled by CURTAINS: 'What is this diaphanous barrier keeping me from sitting in that windowsill?'), occasionally just gets riled and comes for Hissy Fit, in a serious way, and man does Hissy Fit run and hide like a bitch. Spatula is stupid but immensely strong.

Posted by: LenNeal at February 20, 2024 03:23 AM (9yXr+)

418 I've been lucky with cat roommates. Arizona the big red tabby did not like other cats, but he put up with Mom's L'il Bit and Linda's Marie-Antoinette. Little Oreo was elderly, so she didn't want to play much, but she got on fine with kitten Tatiana. Chekov the white-and-black Siberian accepted big black stray Wolf very quickly; in an hour they were sitting in the window together watching birds. And Stirling and Dagny seem to like each other quite a bit. I often caught and catch the latter pairs grooming each other.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at February 20, 2024 03:26 AM (omVj0)

419 The Kid wanted a cat that specifically was NOT Hissy Fit, so rescued this Spatula Kitty. Should have tipped me off the shelter stuffed her in the carrier I brought and said, 'Get it out of here.'
She's not a bad animal, but holy hell is she dumb.
It's hard to tell in the first few weeks with a cat what they're like, but The Kid said after 2 weeks, "Dad, this cat is stupid."
I responded, "Well, we don't know that, maybe she's just not socialized."
The Kid: "You are wrong, this cat is an idiot."
After another month I realized The Kid was completely correct, and that Spatula Kitty is alarmingly stupid.

420 With cats, nothing will ever match the first one, Loki The Evil One.
Black cat rescued from being on a leash outside on a porch, in ghetto Chicago, tied outside for days while neighborhood ferals tore him up. He had also been completely declawed. He was my first serious girlfriend's cat, and since I had my own house she begged me to take him as he was causing so much trouble in her apartment with roommates.
Holy shit was he an asshole. I declared he was channeling the soul of a murdered drug dealer. He actually got along with me okay but the weirdest thing was at the time I did a lot of business in cash, and would count it out in piles on my bed. Loki The Evil One couldn't resist. He'd rub all over the bills like catnip. Only time I ever saw him purr and writhe like a cat.

422 Spatula Kitty getting adopted at the shelter! I have a phone clip of the staff capturing her in a towel and stuffing her vertically into the carrier while she hissed, pinwheeled, and tried to claw them. The shelter girl was hilarious.
Whapped Spatula on her exposed head and said, "Don't you starfish on me, you ungrateful little bitch."
Spatula had been there for months, if it had been a kill shelter she'd have been gone. Other people there to adopt, you know, 'nice cats' were stupefied I'd take her but she struck me as funny. I like a fighter.
Now she's fine, if not too bright. She's killed a few things, mice, snakes, which is what she's supposed to do anyway.
