I think there is a reusable version out there for hobbyist use. Posted by: Admiral spinebender at February 16, 2024 10:48 PM (duT0u) 96
Is this Japan day? Historically this is about the time some of us start going off about how everyone calls George Washington’s birthday or George Washington Day, “Presidents Day”, with no more authority than car commercials. I again am in a Southern state that does not celebrate Presidents’ Day, but the entire government proclaimed loudly that they do even though they don’t. It is a tired argument because you can tell people reality yet if they don’t wanna see it, what in the end are you going to do?
I admit, there are a few states in the South that celebrate Presidents’ Day, such as Texas. I have a big problem with that, but this is the reality based community. The majority of states do not celebrate Presidents’ Day and the US government certainly does not. It is so weird that this just doesn’t get through even though anyone can look up a federal or state calendar. It’s not exactly a major challenge of your net fu. I think a President can pardon for acts prior to any arrest or conviction.
Just as it would have been unprecedented for the VP to stop the electoral vote it would have been the same for Trump to issue that type of pardon. I don’t blame him for not attempting it. Closest would have been Ford pardoning Nixon. Posted by: Sap Green at February 16, 2024 10:51 PM (MNhXM) Posted by: JQ at February 16, 2024 10:51 PM (njWTi) 104
My best and longest time friend, is a retired SAPD officer, who drive a Pilot Truck all over the lower 48.
And, he had the Certificates to operate a trailer such as that splitter rides upon. VERY complex series of hydraulics. Each wheel can turn and steer. And, as the load might go over an "hump" type railroad crossing in a road, each wheel can retract up towards the load bed, as each axle rides over the raised railroad grade. So, the load-bed and load, don't change pitch or height, even a fraction of an inch. A rig like that might have three hydraulic operators, plus the actual driver. All those trucks? SKILLED and EXPERIENCED drivers. And lots of radio comms. Oh, and for real. It'll sometimes take them two or three DAYS to negotiate a single 90 degree turn. Friend quit after about a decade of doing the job. Too much the Gypsy life out there. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at February 16, 2024 10:52 PM (e6UQI) 105

@ChristianM_74 Robert Kennedy Jr. has been granted a victory in his lawsuit against the Biden administration for colluding with social media companies to censor him and others. RFK Jr. was able to win a preliminary injunction against the White House and several federal agencies as a federal judge ruled that the government was "insinuating themselves into the social-media companies’ private affairs and blurring the line between public and private action." Judge Doughty said Kennedy provided substantial evidence that the Biden administration had coerced the companies into suppressing free speech related to Covid, elections, gas prices, climate change, gender, and abortion. ... At least one such massive refinery vessel is moved into the refineries in and around the Texas City, TX, every year.
Most are new replacements, to take the place of a decades old, worn out one of the same kind. Every now and then, a new process line is added, (think, new mini-refinery), and they'll build everything in, brand new. Now, multiply Texas City by Deer Park, Pasadena, TX, Baytown, Beaumont, Chocolate Bayou, Lake Jackson, and etc... there are dozens of those moved in and out, just in the Texas Golden Triangle area. Which does not include Corpus Christi and other "points South", refinery locations. What's also fun, is watching them truck-in the giant cranes that lift those splitters to the vertical, hoist them high into the air, and move them into place while the fiters secure and install them. Those cranes arrive in component parts and pieces, abord a good many Oversize Load semi trucks, and are assembled/disassembled on-site. Which alone, can take two weeks to accomplish. 168 I like that Italian last names were an add on to identify someone. Like in my boobies, you have Jimmy bag of donuts and PD from around the corner, the last name was used to make sure you knew whom you were speaking about.
During the Italian renaissance era you had Leonardo da Vinci, the da, meaning he was from Venice, so that Leonardo. You had Cosimo DE Medici, meaning Cosimo of the Medici family. I think Cosimo‘s son was named Leonardo, but don’t quote me there, but he was Leonardo DI Cosimo, meaning Leonardo, the son of Cosimo. I admit these last names don’t fit for everyone, but at least in that region at that time last names were used simply as a way to identify someone versus someone else with a different first name, thinking about it. This makes perfect sense And I’m sure it’s the case not just in that era in Italy. Posted by: Quint at February 16, 2024 11:30 PM (GHj1L) 177

We have a letter from a Hittite (central Asia Minor) ruler to the Mycenaean Greek ruler congratulating him on defeating a Greek adventurer in coastal Asia minor.
So the funny thing about this...it is more conformation that the Trojan war was real, but it also means the ruler of Troy was likely Greek himself. It does make the theft of a Greek princess seem more likely too. After all if Priam was Greek getting a Greek princess from an important city would be a major diplomatic success... Dutch most certainly had last names before the French "conquered" them.
Posted by: runner In many cases they did - the Netherlands had a big uptick in the adoption of what could be considered surnames in the seventeenth century. Most of these arguably arose as nicknames or descriptions of the father that acquired an enduring aspect, ranging from occupations to geographic descriptors. Some of those listed in the post likely had a different meaning in an early modern context, and others might well be apocryphal. Posted by: This Space Left Intentionally Blank at February 16, 2024 11:41 PM (wgbya) 194
The Dutch mostly had patronymic names - that is they were the son (or daughter) of (father's name). If you owned property, people would use the name of the property as your identifier, or if you were from another town, or country, you might be called van Bakel. It is a challenge if you are tracing your family tree. You need to understand that the naming conventions were different, and that a change was decreed by law, so you will have to connect the name used under the old order with the name used under the new.

Think of the last name Patel for someone from India. I know a tiny bit about it but for sure I realize I still don’t understand it at all. my understanding is there is a huge group of mercantile people that came to the US and they all have the last name Patel because they’re from some particular group, the last name is much less random than how we do it in this country. It means something different.
Then there was an old joke not really an old joke because no one‘s really heard it but it was about how 30% of Korea thinks they are related to Roberty Lee in someway. In re last names, you really end up with some zingers when your forebears got here early enough that they were more-or-less forcibly anglicized to something that local officials could spell. Happened on both my mother's and father's side of the family. Too Teutonic for the folks in, respectively, North Carolina and Virginia, and in both cases generations up to the present have been required to state over and over "Yes, that's really my last name," and "No, you spell it like this. No, no, like this, no, okay, I'll write it down for you. No, really, that's my last name."

It is shocking, that most of Virginia is red when northern Virginia has spread south and west, there is blue Richmond, Charlottesville, and the Newport News Virginia Beach area. Pretty much every other county wasn’t deep red. Virginia would be a deep blue state. The thing about successful states is they not only do not prevent people from moving in from other places to change their own culture, even the most hard-core, conservative ones like Florida and Texas beg them to come. Virginia is the same way, no one is moving out and people are moving in from San Salvador to Buffalo. That is a flat out fact. 199 Think of the last name Patel for someone from India. I know a tiny bit about it but for sure I realize I still don’t understand it at all. my understanding is there is a huge group of mercantile people that came to the US and they all have the last name Patel because they’re from some particular group, the last name is much less random than how we do it in this country. It means something different.
Posted by: Quint at February 16, 2024 11:43 PM (GHj1L) ---- Patel is the most common name for Indians in East Africa. They are usually distinguished by initials: CJ Patel, MK Patel, etc. Often shopkeepers, joke was that when the USA reached the Moon they would find at least one Patel already there. In South Africa the demographics were different. Most of the Indians had been brought over as coolies to work the sugarcane in Natal, so most were low caste and common names were various spellings of Moody, Moodly, Mudli, etc. (bloody British), also Naidoo, Naidu, etc. Govender, Govinder, etc. was already a higher caste. Patel was there but a 'better' class and not as common. Singh is Sikh I believe. Posted by: Ciampino - Names, so what? at February 17, 2024 01:23 AM (qfLjt) 266

What Javier Milei said about trusts -
The fall of the Omnibus Law in parliament prevented Javier Milei - at least for now - from managing at his discretion the $1.5 billion distributed through at least 29 trusts . The government of La Libertad Avanza understands that this fortune is part of a “black box” that has little or no controls and that was defended tooth and nail by “the caste” so as not to lose their “privileges” that they obtain through them. He could have issued a blanket pardon, Carter pardoned the draft dodgers.
This is legally questionable. Just because Carter did something does not mean it was constitutional. The fact is simply no prosecutor challenged this in court. Any January 6 pardon certainly would have. I'm sure he was getting "helpful" advice from people like Barr not to do it. Additionally, Trump had no reason to believe the Justice Department would act as it did, in full bloodthirsty, vindictive Reign of Terror mode. He had spent four years witnessing the Justice Department do nothing to protesters. Posted by: I Work for Dick Jones at February 17, 2024 03:27 AM (26v+j) 300
