My hands are still chilled from bodging on the Corvair in the garage. Working on front brakes, new shoes, wheel cylinders, springs, hardware, wheel bearings and seals. First year for the "self-adjusting" brakes, lots of springs! Drums were in fine shape-so reusing them. Now, I'm going to have a rib-eye steak to warm up.

My "hobby" right is keeping the ice from tearing off the return jet in the pool. If the water's below it, which is proper, and it freezes, which it will, it can tear off that jet and put a nice big 'ol hole in my above ground pool.

I was gifted a 1972 Fiat 124 Spider. In several pieces. I had never worked on a Fiat before that and found it to be dirt simple.
Some of the assorted loose pieces included a 1980 2L engine and a hood that would accommodate the dual overhead cam arrangement that motor had. It was a pretty fun car to drive and when I listed it for sale a German guy bought it from me. His business was buying American spec-ed European cars and selling them in Europe. He left the car on my driveway until the next day so I decided to write a note explaining the installation of the newer bigger engine and all I had done to the car. This car went to a mechanic in Holland who was thrilled to have it. He was quite enthusiastic about it and sent a couple of pictures with a note. He had it in original condition with ash tray hubcaps replacing the mags that were on it when I got it. "the body needed a lot work!" he said. Dang I thought I did a pretty good job on it. American versions had safety features that were highly desired. Posted by: DanMan at February 17, 2024 05:59 PM (8uzBS) Posted by: DanMan at February 17, 2024 06:01 PM (8uzBS) 26

_________ A mint 914-6 might be worth it. Depending on year and options. Finding a 914 unmolested is getting hard. They're primo candidates for engine transplants. The previous generation WRX flat six was an awesome transplant. With some suspension mods, and better brakes it was a rocket. I wouldn't know... I had to sell mine to move back East. I've been spending more time sketching, mostly pencils and Pigma fine liner pens. Partly due to getting older and partly due to lack of exercise, my hands get stiff. BTW, some of the best advice in the books I've mentioned is patience and persistence. (Endeavor to persevere.) That's good advice but my hands have to get used to the movements in sketching.
That leads to my question for the knitters/crochet folks. Does knitting or crochet help keep the hands flexible? Throw in using a drop spindle. I want to learn the skills anyway but having more nimble hands would be helpful on several fronts. Posted by: JTB at February 17, 2024 06:11 PM (zudum) 36

I had one lovely day last week; wife went along when I took eight black walnut trunk sections, just under 2' caliper, to the sawmill. I estimate weight at four tons, enough bulk that I got to hell off the interstate link and drove out the old US route, to avoid any sudden maneuvers. That is supposed to yield around 800 board feet, and the sawyerin' fee will be maybe $350.
We're not awash in sawmills, so it will be a couple months, and then I'll have to lug the boardstock home for air drying and take it all back a few months later for some kiln and plane work. Wood carries a lot easier when it's not round anymore. Posted by: Way, Way Downriver at February 17, 2024 06:19 PM (zdLoL) 46

Picked up a Redarc tow pro brake controller and of course no one offers the correct harness from the tow pro to the existing 2012 Tundra connecter in the cab, so 2 orders later and I get to mate them. Oh and the butt connectors, ring terminals, crimping tool, 20ft of 2wire 10gauge, and the 7 with 4 pin for trailer/hitch. I might need a 30 and 40amp circuit breaker but will not know until I start testing after it'll all installed. I laid out where to drill for the tow plug and need to drill those 2 holes too. I have a library I paneled in wood, but trimmed 4x8 wood that "looks like paneling." Since we live in kind of a walnut grove, I made up my mind decades ago that one day I'd undo that and put in all the stringers it takes to do it in real board stock grown on the property. Most of my walnuts are "English," which I like all right; when we took these trees down it came as a surprise to have them all declared Black. Now they have special rights. Ben Had, I hadn't thought of that. I have an old Yamaha keyboard I haven't used in ages. Might be time to get it on the table. My attempts at scales could be 'interesting'. Also, might get out one of the smaller manual typewriters like an Olympia SM4. The action is smooth but does take some effort of all the fingers, which could prove helpful. I prefer the bigger desktop models like the Royal KMM but it takes up too much of the desk surface if I'm not using it constantly. Posted by: JTB at February 17, 2024 06:31 PM (zudum) 65

Then another cleaning inside with some acid and multiple rinses before coating the inside with this stuff called POR-15, which sealed the inside of the tank. It's solid enough I think. I don't know if it count when one pays someone else to do it, but I now have a new fuel pump and fuel filter in my Suburban. (The old pump was rusty, and I haven't opened up the old fuel filter to see what's in it.)
The mechanics said the tank was in fine condition with only a bit of sediment when they drained it. And the Suburban still idled roughly and tried to stall when I was driving yesterday. ... I think I'm gonna have to learn how to change out my own fuel filters. Having someone else do it is too expensive. Posted by: FeatherBlade at February 17, 2024 06:52 PM (oyvJ/) 81
I finished a quilt for my 90+ year old next door neighbor and gave it to her today; she was very happy. It has nine blocks of nine patches made with 1930's reproduction fabrics in bright spring colors with white sashing, white borders, and yellow backing. Next project: a stuffed baby Yoda for my toddler grandson.

"I haven't seen a Karmann Ghia on the road in years.
Was a poor man's "Porsche". Posted by: Hairyback Guy" Back when I had the 914, I worked as a mechanic with a guy who had a pristine Ghia convertible, baby blue. He lent it to a flunky at the shop to take his girlfriend out for some occasion, I forgot what, and the kid totaled it. Posted by: fd at February 17, 2024 06:58 PM (vFG9F) 85

Different project: sew a pillow case to put the contents of all my feather ticks into.
But I want it actually body-shaped. Because why not? I figured a jumpsuit pattern would be a good place to start. The only decent jump suit/coveralls pattern available was some Simplicity thing, I think, and the design hasn't changed since the 1970s, by the illustration on the pattern envelope. " I have had beaucoup problems with bad gas in my diesel truck.
Posted by: Ben Had " I suppose that could be the case. I really don't want it to be. I'm running Non-ethanol in it to hopefully keep the engine a little cleaner, and the place I've been buying fuel is a dollar cheaper per gallon then NEP in my town of residence. You never see them at shows or cruise nights. Its like they left the planet. Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at February 17, 2024 07:03 PM (VwHCD) 90

If you are going to buy cheap gas make sure you put something like seafoam in it. Seafoam can get expensive so make your own!
http://tinyurl.com/53pas44h I pointed this out to a nephew and he made a gallon of it for motorhome he was buying. He put the gallon in then filled the tank, drove it 100miles home. The injectors were clean. Posted by: AZ deplorable moron at February 17, 2024 07:08 PM (5/CA+) 93
Around here you see a Karmann Ghia now and then; but, only in the winter.

AZ deplorable, even with diesel clean I have had problems. My truck seems to run normally on the most expensive gas in town.

When I don't knit, I seem to have more pain in my hands. Spindle spinning loosens up my shoulders and makes me a happier person. I really need to work on my current projects

Everyone knows that you don't knit squirrel underpants. You crochet them.
