That AI lawsuit is interesting, I'm looking into that some more. While I can see *some* merit in a suit for infringement brought in a case of literally (heh) mashing-up explicitly copied excerpts from multiple authors into a more-or-less 'new work', I would think the effect of training AI is little different than someone teaching themselves to write in a specific authors' style.
A style cannot be copyrighted. The question is important, as if it's really AI the bot will mimic the style but not regurgitate the content complete. Therefore, if it's only copying and combining, it is NOT AI! Also, parody is handled differently than so-called original work. Thinking about that, after watching some Spinal Tap videos on YT, and the endless speculation about who, exactly, the boys based their devastating parody on... Agreement is it's a combination of a lot of bands. Posted by: LenNeal at February 14, 2024 04:23 AM (9yXr+) Posted by: Nigel Tufnel, tech virtuoso at February 14, 2024 04:25 AM (9yXr+) 7
LOL tech stuff in the comments of the ONT:
141 but I think we are beyond the point of knowing if there is even a live human liar trying to deceive us I read a lot. I mean, like a lot. Really, really a lot. Always have. Then, they invented the world wide web. When I drill down on any subject, I like to scour the web, and discussion forums. What I’ve noticed is some websites are obviously AI cutouts. There is no there, there. It just reads like a badly pasted together conglomeration of wishy-washy “but on the other hand” and no definitive declarations of any sort, or if there is, it will be immediately contradicted in the next sentence. Oh, a shout-out of high praise to drivers on Illinois I-39 and I-55. 4-lane divided, 70 mph speed limit. Slower drivers kept right, and nobody tailgated in the right lane but kept interval until able to pass safely. Large trucks pulled no intimidation tactics. Things didn't go to hell until Rockford where it always turns into Death Race 2000.
Polite, courteous, and sensible drivers on a State Highway! Amazing, and I'd like to honestly commend everyone involved for being decent. Unlike in Wisconsin, where on the State Highways people drive like unhinged homicidal maniacs and/or sedated, senile mental defectives. I-90 between the state line and Madison is seriously one of the worst drives there is, and it's in many sections 8-lane divided! There is simply no conceivable excuse for it. But Central IL is populated by very polite and sensible travelers. Big thumbs up. Posted by: LenNeal at February 14, 2024 04:43 AM (9yXr+) 10

My compliments to IL drivers only extends to the State highway as the County 2-lane roads were of course populated by speeding locals who all 'know where they're going' and cannot comprehend someone from out of the area, and tailgate, express impatience, etc.
I've NEVER understood that kind of rudeness and dangerous, unsafe behavior by locals. You get behind a car with out-of-state plates doing the speed limit, they're probably, oh, not familiar with the area and are being cautious. Why, then, treat this obvious visitor/tourist like some unacceptable obstruction or deadly personal insult and be a threatening fucking asshole to them? A-hole Posted by: Bruce' WI is the WORST. I don't fully understand why. I've experienced behavior on the county roads here that's simply crazed. I had one driving home, same situation as you describe. I finally pulled out my gun and displayed it inside the vehicle so the psycho could see it, and then, and only then, did they back away to a decent interval. Ridiculous. The AI movement is plunging headlong into Soviet Science territory at a very rapid rate. I suspect a lot of people don't realize just how nutty The Science was in the USSR. Everyone knows about Lysenko but he wasn't alone! The ideas floating around were really anti-human and in practice anti-life itself.
Oparin was one of the most dangerous, in my opinion: "There is no fundamental difference between a living organism and lifeless matter. The complex combination of manifestations and properties characteristic of life must have arisen as a part of the process of the evolution of matter." Voila! Artificial Intelligence by decree. End of story. The Science is settled. Can't seem to make Life? Define it out of existence. Posted by: LenNeal at February 14, 2024 05:21 AM (9yXr+) 38

The nerds anthropomorphized computers and media normalized it. Puppies can be trained. Doped silicon wafers are not capable of learning, no matter how many transistors it contains. Posted by: 13times at February 14, 2024 05:27 AM (vepQc) 45

Ha, I like how the LLM description claims it has no goal as it is not an agent. How is that philosophically even possible? AI is human-created, each of whom involved is an agent with a goal no matter how impartial they may try to be. Any agency and resultant goals are automatically injected into the 'DNA' of any crafted so-called LLM and any of its involvement in so-called AI.
The only true way out of this is to accept certain ideologies (blank slate?) and/or redefine Life itself, an idea which currently is racing away faster than most people think. Posted by: LenNeal at February 14, 2024 05:37 AM (9yXr+) 53

Posted by: LenNeal at February 14, 2024 *** Even under that condition, LN, tailgating is still severley dangerous. Suppose the left-lane blocker has to jam on his brakes for some reason? BANG! As I understand it, in Germany and esp. on the autobahn, if you're overtaking someone in the left lane, it's considered standard etiquette to flash your brights to let him know, "Please move over." It's not taught here; whenever I've done that, the clueless driver does nothing. I still don't tailgate, though. I go around him first chance I get. We have a four or five mile stretch of seldom used highway that starts in the middle of nowhere and ends in the middle of nowhere. Eventually, in a century or two it will be part of I 49 if they can figure out a river crossing and buying up the bulk of a few small towns. It was constructed with Obamabucks. Currently used as the local drag strip and NASCAR wannabe practice track.

I take the DC Beltway to drive to church and work. Tailgating is the norm here. Hell, I do it. Not out of malice and I try not to. I've been tailgated, on I395, on a Sunday morning with very little traffic. I395 is a drag strip on weekends, especially in the AM. I look, see no cars coming, merge into lane, and I'm greeted with angry honking horn and high beams. Dude was driving way over 100, there was literally nobody else on the road and then this idiot appears. It's madness around here.

How the fk add they going to restore the old forests they razed to put up these vast fields of black glass? They won't. At best is will be rows and rows of pines that will take 30 years and then they will cut them down again . Not that I have any problem with tree farming. That's fine. Idiocy like these solar farms are not the way to encourage the tree farming industry.

Ukraine isn't our concern and we're protecting their border like crazy, while ours has thousands of terrorists crossing every day. Nothing is at stake over there. Nothing meaningful, at least. What actually *is* at stake, for us, if Putin wins? What exactly are they so damned scared of? What strategic advantage does a bunch of mismanaged wheat farms give Putin that is worth us cramming billions of dollars down a tube full of cossacks and petty oligarchs? And if the answer is nothing more than "because Putin is a bad guy and any thing good for him is bad for us", then why the fuck has Washington been paying footsie with the creep for the last thirty years? At a certain time of year, as you rounded a slight curve in the road, the sun blasted directly into your eyeballs, and nothing could prevent that from happening. It was only for about 75 foot till another roof peak blocked then, and you learned to anticipate that. Yeh...no. She took a sun shot directly into the eye, panicked and did not turn with the road.
