Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Music Thread: Shut Up And Sing!![]() Happier stuff below. Mostly what was on my recently played list... ELO is sort of a weird group. Their music, at least to my ear, is over-produced and electronic, yet it works! Maybe it's the quality of the musicianship (Lynne can play the guitar pretty well), or the fact that it seems original. I know very little about Soul music, but I sure do love this song. In the Midnight Hour by Wilson Pickett is a classic, and for good reason. Speaking of great music, this is as good as it gets. Speaking of dumbsh*ts. Van Morrison is climbing Dildo's boycott chart. "They Own the Media" is his entry in the Jew-Hate competition, although Roger Waters is probably going to retire the trophy soon. Morrison also recorded an anti-lockdown song with Eric Clapton, so he isn't all bad, but still... Sorry to be sort of serious. You are of course free to ignore my blather and go off on wild tangents, which you are going to do anyway! Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

I was never a Cat Stevens fan but he was so talented and so handsome when he was a young guy I guess he got burned out from all the hippie dippy love stuff and went hard right into being a muzzie looking for something he didn't get at home. I think he almost died once from TB so that may have fucked his head up a bit.
I think he is Greek and Swede mixed together so talk about good genes. "First Cut Is The Deepest" is still a great listen after all these years. Posted by: Hairyback Guy at February 17, 2024 07:21 PM (R/m4+) 13

I went to see a Beach Boys concert back in the 80s, just to have something to do for a date. The opening act was Stevie Ray Vaughan, who I'd never heard of (before he hit it relatively big). After that, I bought all his albums as soon as they came out. Just a mesmerizing performance. I remember that the true Beach Boys fans in the audience were not impressed. There's no accounting for taste, and it was a Beach Boys show, after all, but still. Kind of sad.

My go-to electronic stuff is Jean Michel Jarre and of course Tangerine Dream. Great album is Ride on the Ray: The Blue Years Anthology. And of course Dream Sequence. The 5-disc set, Tangents 1973-1983, is superb. JMJ is at his best in Oxygene and my fave, Equinoxe. As always with music, YMMV.

I drove to Pittsburgh last night to see a local band, Ghost Hounds, and was blown away. Not just well written songs well played, but stage presence and presentation that made it impossible to not enjoy the show. It was easy to have fun because it was obvious they were.
The opener, Orianthi, came out with her guitar for the encore , a really banging cover of Sympathy for the Devil. SRV hung out in East Texas and played small bars in the Mid 80's in places like Nacogdoches, Tyler, and Kilgore. He did this while he was working to get clean from a nasty drug abuse problem. The great tragedy of his life was that he finally kicked his drug habit for good, he put out some albums that were wildly successful, he started touring everywhere and was finally on top of the world - and then he died in that helicopter crash.
He was at the absolute peak of his life when it happened; but then perhaps that's the best time to go. But you see why has fans have always been so devastated. Posted by: Tom Servo at February 17, 2024 08:07 PM (S6gqv) 91

Now, I need some advice. When I was a kid, I took music lessons and finally landed on guitar. Unlike my buds at the time, I had a bad ear and couldn't pick up on riffs, but I had a strict teacher and learned to read music, even the really complicated stuff. If it was in ink on paper I could play it. Mom and Dad started me with a Stella, went to a Gibson LG, and then a Gibson SG with a little Ranger amp. All gone.Haven't picked up a guitar in decades but was thinking of one of the on line courses with a decent cheap import guitar, just for personal amusement. Any suggestions on the courses available?

Neil Young is a cranky old asshole, but when starting out, did some nice stuff.
I bought my Martin D-18 guitar in 1972, the year Young's "Harvest" was the year's top selling album. I lost the album but still have the D-18 and play every day.. Harvest Moon with its signature riff, the second guitar coming in in the vocal line with those harmonic pings, is a wonderfully sweet tune. No politics. It's longer than many pop songs, at a little over five minutes, but it doesn't seem long when played and sung. Young plays it dead steady at 113 beats per minute, the rhythm od his right hand never wavering. Posted by: Mr Gaga at February 17, 2024 09:12 PM (KiBMU) 196

90 SRV hung out in East Texas and played small bars in the Mid 80's in places like Nacogdoches, Tyler, and Kilgore. He did this while he was working to get clean from a nasty drug abuse problem. The great tragedy of his life was that he finally kicked his drug habit for good, he put out some albums that were wildly successful, he started touring everywhere and was finally on top of the world - and then he died in that helicopter crash.

Cat Stevens - I think Buddha and the Chocolate Box was his last album as Cat. Last one I got, anyway.
His songs like Peace Train had a hopeful, gospel-ish quality although kind of empty at the core. I liked his work and wished him well. With Buddha, I thought he was really getting near religion, tending toward something Christian or at least Buddhist, with songs like Ghost Town, Jesus, Home in the Sky, and King of Trees. Still seemed he hadn't found a core faith, but seemed like he was heading in a good direction. I liked the album and wished him well. Next thing I knew he turned Mooselimb and denounced music. Seriously? How terribly sad. And I didn't even fully realize how bad a turn Islam was at the time, just that he'd jumped the tracks and crashed the peace train. I hoped he would take a new turn again, but he hasn't. I knew he still was hollow at the core. Tragic. His talents might have been a great force for good. It would be hard to figure out which concert I saw that was the loudest. I lost my hearing, briefly, during a Boston concert. They had a pipe organ (mobile one. Go figure) and on one song (can't remember which one), it blasted out this marvelous, melodic, sound and my ears just went 'yea, were out'. Recovered and enjoyed the rest of the show. Boston is really good live. Not sure my hearing ever recovered.

46 Speaking of electronic, and it’s really off the wall, but I like 2 tunes by a French guy named Serge Blenner (Pièce tendre and Palabre d’A).
Posted by: dhmosquito at February 17, 2024 07:42 PM (rAyua) Over 1/3 of my music collection (3000+ CDs, 500+ LPs, 1TB digital files) is Electronic music. Tangerine Dream makes up the bulk of that, with over 200 unique items. I saw them five times, starting in '86 at the Alberquerque concert (which is NOT what is featured on LiveMiles!), and was a guest at their '96 and '97 shows in London. Anyone wanting to start exploring their immense catalogue should start with 1975's Rubycon from their first Golden Era ('73–'79), and then 1982's Logos - Live from their second Golden Era ('80–'85). Ignore anything from the current iteration of the band — without its founder and visionary Edgar Froese, they're just wearing the name as a skin suit. "Speaking of dumbsh*ts. Van Morrison is climbing Dildo's boycott chart." Sir George Ivan Morrison is an Irish SOB, I say.
To quote someone from 3 years ago debating him and that album on Reddit, "Van Morrison has created some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard in my life. He's also an a**hole and pretty much always has been as far as I can tell. I won't be listening to his new music but I also won't be cancelling Moondance and Astral Weeks." I OTOH would & do, but that's me. Want to be happy, entertained & non-controversial? Catch Jon Bolton, formerly, or still with, The Beatniks - Seattle. Better yet, catch him with the band. They're classic rock, he's wildly entertaining. He played with the Beach Boys touring band 2023, replacing the also fun & talented John Cowsill, a vocalist & drummer with his siblings' band. Who? asks the 29 year olds, the same I asked when dragged to a Steve Allen, Edyie Gormet concert decades ago. And I couldn't have been more impressed with their performance. Quite a lesson for me. (Paul Anka soon?) ELO is fun, happy. If Jeff Lynne tours around my region, I'd make every effort to see him. It's been decades. 189 My first concert was Marty Robbins in Amarillo, Tx. I was about 3. He was so good that I still remember parts of it. It was about the time the Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs album came out and he sang El Paso and Big Iron.
Posted by: huerfano at February 17, 2024 09:11 PM (Q4KYm) My Dad loved Marty Robbins, and as kids we listened to all those songs and knew them by heart. FF many years, and there we were in the Silver Bowl in Las Vegas watching the Grateful Dead late one Saturday night, when they break out 'El Paso.' I just laughed as we all sang along with Jerry, knowing the absolute consternation on my Dad's face as I told him, "Well, Dad, it was great to hear the Grateful Dead covering Marty Robbins..." My first live Concert was Genesis in '78 touring '...And Then There Were Three.' Many great shows followed, Van Halen opening for Black Sabbath (most people left after Van Halen), Rush touring 'Hemispheres' with April Wine opening, Supertramp touring 'Breakfast in America'... Sigh. Posted by: Brewingfrog at February 17, 2024 10:22 PM (zX+j0) 257
Carly Simon had it right about Asshat Stevens with Legend in Your Own Mind. In fact her worst songs are better than his best.

Maybe Van Morrison's recent foray into blues is his attempt to atone for that terrible Jew hate.

In my mid-20s in Dallas I read about this "hot young guitarist" from Texas. This before SRV had a record deal. I went to a performance at a small venue on Greenville Avenue in Dallas. I have never that blown away by a live performance. I was standing 10 feet away the whole time and I will never forget when he began to play his guitar behind his back! For my money, he was the best electric guitar player of all time. (My "trinity" of guitar players is SRV, EC and Jimmy Page.) His covers are always way better than the original versions. See Texas Flood, Voodoo Child and Hideaway. Also, check out the beauty and complexity of his own Riviera Paradise.
Re Van Morrison, he has written more really good songs than any other artist, and he is as good as anyone as a singer. A great all-around musician. Posted by: JR at February 18, 2024 11:28 AM (n7Aro) 264
Similar to James Taylor. Winderful music in the past but his politics makes me turn him off whenever I hear him
