Youtube (Google) is precious. Was watching a video about the Yellowstone Caldera when I noticed a 'Context' label. Wut? Climate Change is caused by human activity, apparently. That was the 'context'. I guess watching this video would lead me to believe that a massive volcanic explosion in NW Wyoming would actually lead to world destroying climate change is something that needs 'context'. Thank you, my Google overlords, for clearing that up.

Door no. 1? Or door no.2?

precious |ˈpreSHəs|
adjective
1 (of an object, substance, or resource) of great value; not to be wasted or treated carelessly: precious works of art | my time is precious.

2 derogatory: affectedly concerned with elegant or refined behavior, language, or manners: his exaggerated, precious manner.

7 In dumpster diving news, the ancient Compaq laptop I fished out of the DoD contractor's dumpster did have a working hard drive, which I removed and examined. It was last updated in 2002, and far from being DoD related, seems to have been used by the local hospice volunteer group!
What it was doing in that building is a mystery to me. I'm trying to remember now what was in that part of the building 20+ years ago, I know it wasn't the current tenant but it seems bizarre an office or stock room would have got untouched for that length of time!
I guess it's not impossible but Wow.
The laptop wants to power up but can't, I'm thinking BIOS battery but I handed it to The Kid and she can fool around with it. She loves old timey computer shit.

8 from a yesterday thread:

"As an ice cream lover, what makes me the most angry is that ice cream cartons have actually shrunk in size but not in price. I've had enough of what they call Shrinkflation. It's a rip off. Some companies are trying to pull a fast one by shrinking the products little by little and hoping you won't notice. Give me a break. The American public is tired of being played for suckers. I'm calling on companies to put a stop to this. Let's make sure businesses do the right thing now."

"Angry"? The size of an ice cream carton is "what makes [this person] the most angry"? The Anger Management office is over thataway.

10 In Japan there are only a few Dunkin Donuts as the franchise is Mister Donut:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mister_Donut

When the USA stores merged all but one became Dunkin Donuts: the only Mister Donut store in the USA is in Godfrey, IL where I am near right now, so I am going there shortly to have coffee and get souvenirs for a Japanese colleague. This one store in Godfrey has a small but steady stream of Japanese tourists making the pilgrimage to The Only Mister Donut In America!

The lovely arrays of candies and pastries. How very pretty! Many, true works of art!

26 Ugh now I'm having intrusive flashbacks about the utterly inscrutable Japanese smart toilets...

At the resort outside Sapporo, I had to look online for a PDF manual TO THE TOILET, which turned out to be unhelpful as the model was exclusive to Japan and was not available in English, so I had to figure it out by trial and error.

Hint: do not peer into the toilet while pressing buttons on the electronic control pad in Japan.

36 They say, go for Sea Scallops. If you look at a sea scallop at your purveyor, wanted it to be dry. When you are talking high-end fish, you want it dry not wet people mistake that.

They often cheat with the base scallops. The base scallops can be great. The rip off supermarket will load them with water and nitrates. Then they get this discernible smell. Never buy scallops soaking in any liquid. The guy selling them is trying to cheat you. Those scallops smell and taste like garbage and are nothing like actual bay or sea scallops.

40 If you’ve ever had a fresh Fresca recently, you might like the thing. Compared to mini soft drinks I like a Fresca. it is a joke that they actually labeled themselves as a flavored soda, water, keyword water. It’s a freaking soda it’s no calories, do with that what you may.

41 I made some Korean fish cakes (eomuk?) a little while back that were basically just a fish paste of cod, scallops, and calamari, with just enough flour and egg to bind it together, and shallow fried until cooked through.

Absolutely delicious. Followed the recipe exactly though, and it called for way too much white pepper. Enough to get that szechuan pepper-y tongue numbing thing going on. But hardly a deal breaker.

45 41, the Korean has some great stuff. A couple of years ago I got into Korean Ramen. it is not like the Japanese stuff it is dehydrated and they love it. The key to Korean Ramen, is you throw in everything like eggs, green onions, etc.

The thing that will blow many away is the Korean simply adore cheese. They throw cheese into all of the Ramen and they even have an amusement park based on cheese. Sounds crazy. Yes that’s the stuff I like when people are places go against but people think they’re going to do.

49 44, I love Fresca, judge Smails aside. I tried it years ago and I was shocked how good it was with no calories.

My understanding is there was a Fresca shortage during Covid and people thought it was a conspiracy, the bottlers actually had to come out with an excuse, and said it wasn’t a bias against Fresca. Just today I looked at my own supermarket and Fresca cost more than Coke or Pepsi.

I usually go for wine or tea. I probably haven’t bought more than five cases of soda in the last 10 years. But again Fresca is a great drink, I did drink soda I would go for that one.

52 Donuts? I wish I could have some without guilt. We have a Dunkin D. here somewhere, and the much-lauded Krispy Kreme. But the stalwart is Tastee Donuts, nicknamed "Tasty Stales" by my witty friends and myself many years ago and yet still loved and patronized. At one intersection in the 'burbs here, a Tastee and a KK sit on opposite corners, probably glaring at each other like Western gunfighters. There's room for both, I guess: KK gets the northbound traffic, Tastee the southbound.

There's a "Joe's Donuts" too. Don't think I've ever tried them.

There are so few actually great mixers maybe ginger ale maybe Coke. But you’re doing it because you’re pushing down really bad vodka and really bad whiskey, I get it. There is always a time in place.

But most mixers suck. If you have a good booze, you don’t need it. There is a reason the most popular mixed in Spain among young people is bad, red wine, and Coke. I’ve tried it and it’s not that bad. But is it better than bad red wine on his own? Everyone has to make that decision for themselves.

80 62, I remember a New Year’s Eve as a Yute. We were in the country on a farmhouse, and as my life is progressed, I respect for living in the country in a farmhouse, has only gone up exponentially.

Regardless, we were trying to sneak some booze into our celebration as yutes. Someone came up with mix and Coke with the red wine to fool the old people. Even then I thought that is probably the most disgusting combination you could come up with.

It turns out that in Spain, Coca-Cola and red wine is the most popular drink among the yutes. I tried it recently and you have to add a lot of ice but to be honest it is not that bad. And this is from a wine snob who likes to throw off his French And Spanish pronunciations.

The cognitive whiplash must be bizarre. Walk around in a school looking confident and they'll put you in a straight jacket and medicate you into submission. And yet they scream at you that you must love yourself more than anything on earth and react violently if anyone dare gainsay that.

83 Got to feed some furry beasts. Both earned their keep last night: They were hunting some kind of bug on the living room floor. I looked, and it was a spider -- and not a tiny brown wolf spider, but something larger and very dark. I've never seen a black widow in real life or the other species that can make you or an animal sick with its bite, but this did not look good.

I scooped it into a glass and tossed it outside.

90 71, everyone should be proud of who they are, and from their generation, and no one is defined by their generation.

Having said that, everyone wants to be generation x. I think that is why millennials always go off about boomers, they have no clue the average boomer is 80 years old. It is Gen X that is their opposite, and everything they are not. This is not some type of game or one wins and one loses. I am legitimately happy. I grew up in Gen x, and I legitimately am sorry for people who grew up as millennials, Gen Z, etc.

114 100, it’s not that millennials are dumb. It’s that they grew up in a very different country than Gen Xers. Someone mentioned the movie the bad news Bears, they didn’t know it, but that movie is a great example of the generational divide.

My sisters old kittuh from the 80s has a big, black, curious kittuh. She was stationed in Germany. Her apartment door had a lever, not a door knob. The kittuh would just stretch all the way up to the lever and pull down, opening the door. One day, her apartment manager came to her door asking if she had a black cat. Apparently, Mr. Spock paid the nice German lady a visit.

164 An expert in election data asserts that almost 35,000 Georgia voters in 2020 cast ballots from the wrong jurisdictions, but Georgia’s top election official hasn’t responded to his request for an investigation.

Davis says he inquired again earlier this month after finding evidence of the same problems in Georgia’s 2021 and 2022 elections.

Dems like to keep about 3x to 5x the margin of win in a floating slush fund of votes.

Except for my mom, who is dying of cancer. (Don't want sympathies, and I'm ghosting after this comment.)

172 Warming of the global climate system over the past half-century has averaged 43 percent less than that produced by computerized climate models used to promote changes in energy policy. In the United States during summer, the observed warming is much weaker than that produced by all 36 climate models surveyed here. While the cause of this relatively benign warming could theoretically be entirely due to humanity’s production of carbon dioxide from fossil-fuel burning, this claim cannot be demonstrated through science.

And we cannot accurately measure to with +-1 Degree F at around 93% of all NOAA stations.

If you don't try to force people to act rationally, they are not going to do it on their own if you help them exist irrationally. So, letting them face the consequences of their own actions is pretty much all you can do, or it gets worse.
