The Saturday Night Joke

Mrs. Stein, a rich tourist, goes to Paris to visit the art galleries. She decides to hire the services of a guide to show her around the Louvre.
"Oh!" said Mrs. Stein looking at a painting, "That's a Monet isn't it?"
"No, Madame, almost, it's a Manet." replied the guide.
"And that one, it's a Pissarro?"
"Er... no, I'm sorry, Madame, that's a Monet."
"Oh, I see. Now that one I’m sure of - that's a Picasso isn't it?"
".... no Madame, that's a mirror."

Police: Woman, 28, Busted For Battering Her Mother With Grits

The female victim, 64, was covered in grits when officers arrived, according to a police report.

An argument over kitchen usage turned violent Monday afternoon when Jakiela Mobley, 28, “grabbed some of the grits” being cooked by her mother and “hit her in the face” with the porridge.

The victim, Ila Johnson, told Florida cops that Mobley had been drinking and using drugs, and that “when she does this, she becomes aggressive towards her.” Johnson added that she did not want to contact police since “the matter was juvenile at its core.”

A sheriff’s deputy who responded to the Ocala residence noted that he “observed dried grits on the side of the victim’s face,” as well as matching grits on the kitchen counter and in a nearby dustpan.

79 had to look at the foodie cities since Louisville was mentioned. I've had many and made a few hot browns.
Pretty good but Texas toast and mornay sauce?
How about layered turkey, Swiss cheese, ham and bacon covered with cheddar and then all melted together in one glorious glob of goodness.

Heh, takes me back to a saying that got used here some back in the day.
I don't understand those words in that order.

Which is why we only went to Cracker Barrel one time when it opened up here. I wanted hash browns instead of grits. Waitress said they come with cheese on them. I asked for no cheese. She replied they couldn't do that.
Which told me they came to the restaurant pre-cooked and frozen to be nuked.

90 THANK YOU, HROTHGAR!

I just got home from Mass. BOTH my boys and my new DiL were with me. I only cried once. It was so sweet to have all my kids with me.

They are off to party with their friends at my #1 sons house. I will see them in the morning. Meanwhile, I have an evening to myself to reflect on the last couple days. My new DiL is a lovely girl. Voted Trump, pro life, unvaccinated, Catholic, gainfully employed and wants to have babies in a couple years when they get settled.

Holding hands with my boys in prayer was just beautiful. I am so very fortunate.

A lot of that, I wouldn't have even thought about, such as the effect on the seasons. In the summer, the sun would be above the rings, in Winter below them. In summer, you'd get a lot reflected light off the rings, increasing the total sunlight. In Winter, much less.

At night, the rings would be shinning enough all the time, it wouldn't get that dark.

That will happen with Phobos and Mars. The Moon is slowly receding due to the tidal interaction. There's a limit, the formula I forget. If the moon is above the orbital radius, tidal forces tend to slow and throw higher. Below that, tidal forces speed up, and spiral in.

When something gets within the so-called Roche limit, tidal forces rip the body apart, smearing it out into a debris field.

That radius between tidally spiraling out and spiraling in is just the geosynchronous orbit, IIRC. An object orbiting below that is going faster than the earth's rotation. That causes the tidal gradient to try to speed up the rotation (of both both bodies). Angular momentum being conserved, the orbit must spiral in.

Above that radius, orbital speed is slower, and tidal drag slows both bodies down and throw the orbit higher.

209 I'm watching a series on the conflict of Vlad Tepes vs Sultan Mehmed - this is another one of those series where they have the "show" and then interrupt to have historians talk about it.

I guess not surprisingly for a modern show that present Mehmed as reasonable and moderate and Vlad as almost a crazy man. There is no discussion of who those Janissaries are and how they became soldiers for the Sultan for example...

After finishing the show I did a little more reading on Radu, Vlad's brother that sided with the Sultan, because it was rather unclear why he was so attached to the Sultan and one little historical note might provide the answer...apparently the Sultan used him as a sex slave when the man was but a boy and even wrote poetry about it.

One of the fascinating things to watch in the Europe and US is the rise of the "far right" which would generally have been considered left to far left in the 80s.

Hell, Donald Trump's policies would have been completely normal for a 90s era centrist Democrat.

Yeah, the Moon's orbit is currently receding at about 2.2 cm per year. In about 650 million years, it will be too far away for any more total solar eclipses. They will get rarer and rarer with more annular eclipses before then.

But, the Sun will go red giant before that process ends with the Erf being tidally locked with the Moon. A day would be a month long then, and the length of the month would be much longer.

Look up Hohmann transfer orbits to see a bit about this stuff. As mentioned above, there's a lot of counter-intuitive behavior there.

One I remember was an orbital rendezvous simulation. You were trying rendezvous with another object and match speed.

You had to do stuff that seemed just backwards. Suppose the object were ahead of you. You'd think you just needed to thrust a bit to catch up. If you did that, you'd find the object would get farther away. You actually needed to slow down.

>> I wonder what effect a fast-turning Moon would have upon the Earth?

That's a good question. It would increase the rate the Moon was receding, as that would throw even more spin into the "spin-orbit" coupling the tidal forces create.

The Moon was much closer in the ancient past, and was spinning faster than tidal lock. That threw it out to its current tidally locked orbit.

I don't think much would happen to the earth other than the Erf's own rate of decrease of rotation due to the tidal draw would increase as well.

Thinking about it, some more, I don't think a faster spinning Moon would increase the rate the earth's spin is decreasing either. It would increase the rate the Moon's orbit is receding, and that's about it.

There would be some higher order effects, which could effect the tidal picture on Earth. The Moon's shape would be distorted more than it is now. You'd have friction dragging tidal bulges on the Moon, which would alter the mass distribution a bit, and would have high order gravitational effects. (gradients of the gradients and deviations from inverse square and all that).

But I'm guessing these would be so small as to be of no consequence.

There are other tidal locks possible than the simple 1:1, one rotation per revolution.

Mercury is a 3:2 tidal lock, well tidal resonance you should call it. It spins 3 times for every two orbits.

The reason why it falls into a 3:2 notch is due to the much more eccentric orbit. A circular orbit would not have 3:2 "notch" to fall into it.

It wasn’t that long ago the narrative were things like “We need to prepare students to be able to compete in a global economy” (and we were assured a “global economy” was both something new, and an unalloyed good)

Note well a rigorous academic program including things like Calculus (of which I fully admit I never learned) are standard in many countries around the world in Junior High. And they are not filled with racial propaganda, or hatred for their native land, their history, culture, and traditions.

What these cocksuckers have been doing to young people in America, to our students, is way, way beyond fucking criminal.

Now think about how "they/them" tell you T-Rex has been extinct for hundreds of millions of years.
"Their" rescue mechanism,,, that tissue must have been preserved by some process we don't yet understand.

Another? The Oort cloud. A thing that produces comets and spits them out occasionally. "They" can't tell you where it is. It's just a theory. But it has to be out there somewhere because we still have comets which are relatively short lived.

I believe the proteins and collagen were left in those T-Rex bones; no DNA. I could be wrong; I read the articles on it years ago. There was even a scientists where my wife worked (or used to work) that said it was impossible. Well, impossible according to the science as he knew it. And of course, real science takes all evidence, even that which contradicts current thinking.

Posted by: Braenyard at February 17, 2024 11:59 PM (O54VZ)

I had a hard enough time keeping time without adding raising the dead -- and scaring away feral cats -- by trying to attempt to sing. I have seen drummers mouthing lyrics/keeping time while playing as they are in constant motion, with have hands and feet sometimes musically in opposition to each other, so there's a need for a base metronome. But being a lead vocal and really playing the drums is just another level of talent to me. It's really hard to play fills while singing.

Some speed bumps and potholes. Last two days haven't been productive, but there's always tomorrow.
Today?
1) Barefoot in the kitchen this morning, something on the bottom of one foot, swiped it across the other foot, cut foot with whatever it was.
2) Get letter from EDD denying my claim for Family leave payments.
3) Making dinner, cutting potatoes, cut my finger on the BACKSIDE of my knife. (Yeah, how the hell did I do that?)

I think it was one of those days I should have stayed in bed, as if I ever have that option.

438 I killed more bears than Dan'l Boone, brother. It all started when I killed Bart the bear. Only did it because him and Anthony Hopkins killed my son in that movie "The Edge." We called Beau Alex back then. Alex Beaudwin. After that he came back to life and killed a Ukrainian, but only because she was investigating Hunty for Trump's crimes. True story. Word as a Brandon.

My wife used to say, when stuff like that would happen, "Lucky! Go buy Lottery Tickets!". It was a Chinese thing meant to ward off more bad luck. Like when I got a bone chip in a Costco hotdog less than two weeks ago. The second time I've ever gotten a bone chip in a Costco hotdog. What are the odds?

441 Another time, we were using plastic chopsticks at a restaurant. Mine broke. "Lucky! Go buy a Lottery Ticket!". LOL

Andes mountains, 24 individuals, one tribe. 80% plant, 20% meat.
Still sounds pretty meaty to me.
My portions are more like 25% veg, 25% carb, 25% meat, 25% dessert. That would be 25% meat overall, 75% not. Pretty close.

One the one hand 13 dogs can mean a rescue … or 13 dogs can mean a bad breeding // dog fighting situation.

Context matters.
