41 I like the juxtaposition of the Christians martyrs in the front and the looming pagan temple, maybe the Temple of Jupiter Capitolinus in the background. There's also a statue of Roma Victoria or Minerva overlooking the scene. If Roma, its a nicely ironic statement of the superiority of Rome and her gods. Notice how the temples are in darkness tho, and storm clouds are gathering. The martyrs are in light.

60 A nice scene . . . but they have a tiger waiting in the wings as well as another lion. Did Ancient Rome trade with areas that were likely to contain tigers? It's possible, I guess, that a trader in India could have transported one westward until it got to the eastern border of the Empire. The first appearance of one at a game would have been a sensation.

Rome had a healthy trade with India by the time of the Empire. I would think the easiest way to transport a tiger that far would be when it is still a cub.

42 Well, so much for Valentine's Day!
===
St Valentine was a martyr. From Britannica online:

St. Valentine (died 3rd century, Rome; feast day February 14) is the name of one or two legendary Christian martyrs whose lives seem to have a historical basis. Although the Roman Catholic Church continues to recognize St. Valentine as a saint of the church, he was removed from the General Roman Calendar in 1969 because of the lack of reliable information about him. He is the patron saint of lovers, people with epilepsy, and beekeepers.

By some accounts, St. Valentine was a Roman priest and physician who was martyred during the persecution of Christians by the emperor Claudius II Gothicus about 270. He was buried on the Via Flaminia, and Pope Julius I reportedly built a basilica over his grave. Other narratives identify him as the bishop of Terni, Italy, who was martyred, apparently also in Rome, and whose relics were later taken to Terni. It is possible these are different versions of the same original account and refer to only one person.

You know it, John! We're expecting quite the spectacle today! The odds very long against the Christians but we can count on an athletic and vigorous performance by the big felines!

Right you are, Vin. The Christians' best strategy is to let the lions get full quick and lose interest in the rest of them. Cats do live a nap after they eat!

Only moments until the action unfolds, John. I just can't wait. Ave Caesar!

Ave Caesar, Vin!

89 This reminds me of a moment from a little-known movie about the apostle Paul. (It's available on Netflix or amazon.) There's a scene where Luke is visiting Paul in a Roman jail, and there is a continent of Christians being held before their turn in the Colosseum. They know what is in store for them. They are in a dungeon and there is no one coming to save them. There are children and their parents among them. It's either Paul or Luke who reassures them that "it will only hurt for a moment, and then they'll be in the arms of Christ."

It was one of those depictions that really brings to life what the early Christians went through. The fear. The hope. Sometimes, all they had to hold onto. And in the end, more than sufficient.

115 Aside from the obvious talent, the color and realistic detail (you know, the usual stuff) Gerome has the ability to infuse an emotional element into his scenes. In this case, the juxtaposition of the very detailed and individualistic small group of martyrs, including small, helpless children, with the undistinguished crowds in the stands baying for their blood. Beyond the obvious horror of the scene, the dark, unoccupied temples and ominous sky hints that Rome will lose to this new power and deserves to. The realism adds to the emotional aspect and is a very effective technique.

Having said that, I prefer a number of other Gerome paintings for their more intimate scenes and varied topics. And the man appreciated a woman's figure. Plus some of his sculptures remind me of Rodin pieces. I wonder if Gerome was an influence on the younger Rodin.

Ave Caesar!

126 It's Ash Wednesday.

Wikipedia, Context for The Christian Martyrs' Last Prayer

Concerning the persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire, Tacitus wrote:

First, then, the confessed members of the sect were arrested; next, on their disclosures, vast numbers were convicted, not so much on the count of arson as for hatred of the human race. And derision accompanied their end: they were covered with wild beasts' skins and torn to death by dogs; or they were fastened on crosses, and, when daylight failed were burned to serve as lamps by night. Nero had offered his Gardens for the spectacle, and gave an exhibition in his Circus, mixing with the crowd in the habit of a charioteer, or mounted on his car. Hence, in spite of a guilt which had earned the most exemplary punishment, there arose a sentiment of pity, due to the impression that they were being sacrificed not for the welfare of the state but to the ferocity of a single man.

No point. Germany is finished. They're in demographic collapse, the tyrants running the joint are banning dissent and opposition parties, the declining native population is being enthusiastically replaced, its energy complex is degrading in real time and its industrial firms are all hedging their bets through massive foreign expansion so they can bug out when the time comes.

The best thing for its neighbors to do is take away any atomic weapons based in Germany. It's only a matter of time - and not very much of it - before they fall into the "wrong hands."

Have you tried ginger-ale, ginger tea, saltines?

Healthline, Feb 24, 2020: "As such, drinking ginger tea may help relieve morning sickness during pregnancy. It's generally considered safe to drink up to 4 cups (950 ml) of ginger tea per day while pregnant. However, ginger tea should not be consumed close to labor, as it may increase the risk of bleeding."

And, Healthline, June 29, 2020 - Any kind of crackers will do, such as Triscuts, Saltines, whole grain, whole wheat, or flax crackers. Saltines are great for nausea, but they won't keep you feeling full for long. Cheese is a great source of calcium, phosphorus, and zinc, and its high protein and fat content will help keep you satiated between meals.

The Lions' and Tiger's Prayer Said During The Christian Martyrs' Last Prayer REVEALED!

Dear Lord,

Please in Your Infinite Kindness enlighten our Roman Masters' Hearts and Souls and please have them send us no more Christian martyrs for we are powerful tired of stringy old men and women and even the children which should be nice and succulent and juicy are scrawny and undernourished. I mean, it would be one thing if the fed them honeyed larks tongues and fried dolphin sammiches for a few weeks to fatten them up. But, Lord, they do not!

It's been Christian martyrs day in, day out for years. Really, this is just too much, too big a sacrifice.

Please in Your Mercy send us some cattle or even, nice fat pigs and piglets. Yum-yum. Lord, I'm drooling just thinking about it. Or-

Or a zebu. I could eat a zebu! Heck, I eat the hell out of a zebu!!!

This we ask in Your name because really look over there. That guy's got leprosy!

Amen."

Initially she wrote how she "accidentally stumbled upon a federal authority that does not exist."

Wittmann worked to track down the mysterious Bundesservice Telekommunikation, or Federal Telecommunications Service.

She establishes multiple reasons to believe it is part of the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI), and ultimately concludes that there are actually two "camouflage" authorities. Both are allegedly a secret part of an intelligence agency named the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution.

After Public and Racket had been told that President Barack Obama’s CIA Director, John Brennan, had identified 26 Trump associates for the Five Eyes to target, a source confirmed that the IC had “identified [them] as people to ‘bump,’ or make contact with or manipulate. Ahh yes the fine conservative tradition of throwing anyone you disagree with under the bus. Tucker doesn't believe 100% of what I believe, therefore he's dead to me.

This is why the left always wins the long battles. They'll happily take a 55-45 situation. We whine at a 90-10 situation. Because they understand you will never bet 100-0, but winning a lot of 55-45 battles eventually leads to big wins.

Nonsense. The interview with Putin was an excellent opportunity to hear the perspective of why the war in Ukraine started from the other side. Putin is no less honest than the bullshit that has been coming from DC since day 1 of the invasion. The war started long before that.

You don't have to agree with everything Putin says nor do you have to agree with all of Tucker's opinions but more information is always better than less and the American public has been fed a diet of steady lies from DC about Ukraine and until this interview we heard nothing from Russian's point of view. 248 When asked what they thought about Biden, the voters didn't hold back in their blunt assessments.

"He’s a little bit senile, and I do think if you can’t do the job, it’s time to step down," Natalie, 22, remarked.

"I think he’s unfit for the presidency. A president should be the commander in chief. And he does not appear to be a capable commander in chief," Richard, 36, said.

North Carolina counselor Kim, 43, called Biden a "puppet."

Despite these reservations, 11 of the 13 voters said they'd vote for Trump over Biden if the election were held today.

"Donald Trump did a better job. Joe Biden, I mean, I feel like I don’t have a president," Yalena said. She credited the former president with "starting a conversation" on immigration.

"Sure, it was divisive, and sure, it really wasn’t the most productive, but it really highlighted problems and the divisiveness that was already hidden inside of our country," she continued.

Some voters in the focus group weren't convinced there was anything Biden could do to win their vote.

324 >>Because...you should have figured out for yourself that Ukraine is a fiasco. Did you need Putin to tell you that?

Not the point. The point is why did the war really start and what was the US doing in the years prior to the start of the war in Ukraine? Why did we run a color revolution there in 2014? Why was Ukraine the source of much of the dirt that was used to build the Russia collusion hoax? Why is the establishment hell bent on sending billions and billions of dollars we don't have to keep a losing war going? Why was further eastward expansion of NATO such a priority when we knew it would lead to Putin striking back just as we did for decades when the Soviets tried to exert their influence in Latin and Central America?

There is a hell of a lot more going on with this war than just a territorial dispute and you can't fix something you don't understand.

A lot of Western symbolism comes from the Bible which understandably absorbs the imagery of Mesopotamia. In Mesopotamia, Asiatic lions were the most fierce land animals. This is why Assyrian kings, for example, covered their palace walls with reliefs of lion hunts. It showed the fearlessness and power of the king. The Hebrews adopted that imagery for their metaphors and God used imagery the Hebrews were familiar with for the Bible. When Europe becomes Christian, they naturally use Biblical symbols. History dot com: The domino theory was a Cold War policy that suggested a communist government in one nation would quickly lead to communist takeovers in neighboring states, each falling like a row of dominos. In Southeast Asia, the U.S. government used the now-discredited domino theory to justify its involvement in the Vietnam War and its support for a non-communist dictator in South Vietnam. In fact, the American failure to prevent a communist victory in Vietnam had much less of an impact than had been assumed by proponents of the domino theory. With the exception of Laos and Cambodia, communism failed to spread throughout Southeast Asia.

385 So according to the artist, the scene is not the Colosseum, but the Circus Maximus.

And here we have been going on about the Colosseum for an hour or two. Does not redound to the quality of our scholarship.

It's not a very good representation of the Circus, though.

Well, the Colosseum is pretty famous. However, we have to remember that it was started under the Flavians, Vespasian, and not finished for some years. His son Domitian might have seen it completed. So in Nero's time, for instance, the Colosseum didn't exist.

They had access to Jews.

And you can't keep a Jew from Tunneling. It's what we do.

The article I read about the measles outbreak (which I would not be surprised to learn was written by AI it was so disjointed and repetitive) went on and on about measles and the one sentence that ended with "because of global warming" like it was so obvious no more discussion or investigation needed.

Unbelievable. Not just incredibly sh#tty clickbait online "journalism" but they really expect everyone to just accept the blanket "global warming causes everything bad" BS and move on. STFU Eloi, just go about your business and hope you don't encounter a Morlock.

390 For those playing along at home Kolomoisky was the owner of both Burisma and PrivatBank at one time. That time being when Hunter Biden was working for Burisma and having his money laundered to him through PrivatBank.

Joe made a last minute visit to Ukraine just before Trump was inaugurated to "urge" that Ukraine takeover PrivatBank to control any investigation of what was essentially they money laundering bank in Ukraine.

Interesting. I was just looking at a map of the Flavian Amphitheater and environs, and the view we see is the correct alignment (with the Capitoline Hill in the background) with the viewpoint in the northeast end of the FA.

I don't know if the Circus Maximus had the kind of trap doors for animals and whatever to come out of that are depicted in the painting. The Colosseum definitely did.

81 St Valentine was a martyr.

398 Not a crucifixion. That is damnatio ad flammas. You were dressed in a tunic soaked in oil and then set on fire and slowly immolated.

The people praying are about to suffer damnatio ad bestia, which was much rarer.

400 The torture of either crucifiying or tying them to a post then spreading pitch, oil, and wax on them to be ignited is where we get the term "Roman Candle" as they would execute Christians this way so as to illuminate lavish parties at the various palaces so as to insult the vicimts even more. The Guests would mock them in their agony.
