As a friend pointed out, we do not expect ritual suicide over a cost overrun building a widget, but we do desire a society in which the default is not avoiding all responsibility in a fanatical attempt to retain power and prestige and wealth. The word "honor" has lost its power, and is used too often in the breach. Can we blame the progressive movement and the slide toward socialism as the root cause? No...there are too many examples of this degradation across the political spectrum. Apparently, "Yes, this is my fault" is no longer a part of American speech! It has been replaced with a smug arrogance that every action by our elites is, a priori, perfect. But they aren't, and until the American people no longer accept the arrant nonsense that all decisions made above a certain level are beyond reproach, we will continue to slide down into mediocrity...or worse. We have to hold them accountable until they are replaced by people who, with prodding, hold themselves accountable. it seems to me that the abandonment of responsibility for one's actions took over society in lockstep with the adoption of contraception. if someone's not responsible for his or her sexual activities, it's not such a big deal to avoid responsibility in other areas. Paul VI called out a great many consequences of contraception in Humanae Vitae that are obvious today, but that's one he seems to have missed.

Went into my Office in NJ early AM, before 6, and it was basically OK.

If we assume religion isn't real the first question anyone who can think should ask is...what is the point? Almost every society has been organized around a religion so it isn't a fluke... And I suspect the materialistic reason for the existence of religion is that it provides a moral framework that provides a reason for people to do "the right thing" even when there is no possibility of punishment from your government or society. Pharoah, or the king, or the electorate, depending on your society, might not be watching while you loot the treasury but God or some god is. Step one towards this is the acceptance that they claim themselves to be without flaw because the outcome they are are working toward is not the one we believed it to be. The desire of the globalist elites is that the rest of us be poorer, less safe, more obedient, etc. Fani Willis? Forwards the goals of the uniparty. Biden/Myorkas? Open borders forwards the goals of the uniparty. Garland? Terrorizing the normals forwards the goals of the uniparty. These are the easy ones to see. Boeing, Norfolk Southern, FIU? Normals cannot expect to fly safely. People who live near rail cannot expect to live safely. People who walk places cannot expect to be safe. All this forwards the goals of the uniparty. We ate at a buffet style restaurant a few days ago. There was a large party that was using three separate tables. Men at one table, women and young kids at another table, and the third table was a bunch of teenagers. Everyone at these three tables was loud and rude. No one controlled the little so they were laying in the walking space between tables. The teenagers were amusing themselves with a competition to cram as much bread as possible into a drink glass that was half full of soda. These people made a huge mess and the "server" that refills drinks and bread was being harassed by the teens. None of the alleged adults did anything about the behavior. The group left a huge mess this lady had to clean up and didn't leave a tip.
We were as polite and friendly as we usually are and this lady literally thanked us for being kind to her. Hubbymayhem gave a big tip and she almost cried. People are awful. Fixing things is not much of thing anymore because in a lot of cases, buying new makes more sense. Does anyone fix TVs? No. Because TVs are practically fee nowadays. Appliances aren't quite like that, but relative to fixing major appliances, it's often more cost effective to buy a new one. I had a dryer that needed fixing. I was quoted $400. $300 for the part and $100 for labor. A new one was $750. The old one was approaching 10 years old. So I said fuck it, buy a new one. It's like do I want to invest more than 50% of the value of a new item into an old item? No, that's a bad allocation of resources.

There is no "free will" in the sense of making purely independent choices free of any influence that predispose one to make the decision they did. Hundreds of thousands of prior events, decisions, indoctrination, education or lack thereof, experiences, environmental and genetic personality factors, and a whole host of other things led up to that moment and brought that person to make that decision. There is volition and consciousness, but no free will. We don't wake up blank slates every day.

There was a long piece out yesterday in some online source about how Germany has completely destroyed it's industrial base, and it is not going to come back. It's energy prices are the highest in Europe, and the manufacturers that typified German engineering are all closing down or leaving the country for good. What's even worse, starting about 8 years ago their investment in new tech began to crater, so they don't have anything to switch to. Typical of their disastrous policy - last year the German Govm't announced a new multi-billion euro initiative to build a new Hydrogen Powered electricity system, which would be "green" and replace nat gas. Nuclear and nat gas were shut down in anticipation. Suddenly, the Hydrogen initiative is cancelled, for lack of funds, yet the nukes and the nat gas is still turned off. CBD cites the FIU bridge collapse. Harris County, Tx hired the engineers that designed that masterpiece do design the new bridge over the Houston Ship Channel that would parallel the existing bridge in order to increase capacity. The county Toll Road Authority was so impressed with the proposed design that was supposedly so awesome it led them to declare once the new bridge was built they would replace the original one with an identical new one.
They were very deep into the first structure when the FIU bridge collapsed. It was decided to inspect and analyze everything. It was concluded they had a bag of shit on their hands. I've commented previously that we've gone from a workforce that took pride in their jobs no matter how menial and believed the quality of the work was a direct reflection of them as a person to the 'good enough' mentality. That's the mentality in third world countries and a big reason they are third world.

Douglas Hofstadter wrote a book called "The Mind's I" desperately groping for a purely mechanistic explanation for consciousness. Kind of a fascinating read, but ultimately a bit of a circle jerk if you think too hard about it.

I watched some episodes of Ice Road Truckers. It's a dumb show but whatever, brain sugar is fun sometimes. It's from the late 2000s. And it's crazy how there's zero DEI on the show. All the characters are middle aged white guys, who swear a lot and give no fucks about PC.

The Boeing example isn't the best one. The CEO at the head of it's decade+ long decline (and I would argue at fault for the major issues) got to retire before the MAX issues hit the fan. The next CEO (who might have actually fixed things) did end up taking the fall for it and getting outsted. They can't afford to fire the current CEO, he already isn't really appropriate for the position, but they don't have anyone else even halfway competent/experienced to take over. The whole leadership system is broken, not just at the top, and that's part of why they get away with it. There is only failure at almost every level. There are still amazing folks at that company, but they stall out well before they hit the top.
