I Think That I Shall Never See, A Poem As An ONT

Hello Horde! Before we start the ONT, I'd like to take a moment to pause and remember yesterday as the anniversary of one of the darkest days in America's history, a day which shall live in infamy.

pEARL hARBOR.jfif

Spectator Index is supposedly a “news” outfit, but that tweet is how they started the day yesterday. It did not go well for them.

I asked Chat GPT to write tonight's ONT in verse:

Overnight Thread!
Beloved of none
A chance for the Horde
Their big mouths to run

Conversation unvarnished!
Oft crass, smart or rude
And yet most of the time
People just talk of food

Glorious content!
One never knows what
It might be a tweet
It might be a truck

Fantabulous host!
A Dave who's just weird
He posts cartoon film clips
Or a man to be feared

Historical blog!
So say the reviews
With facts about patriots
And big busty nudes*

Cantankerous Horde!
But ever so smart
They'll admire a hero
And squabble 'bout art

Riotous humor!
Not found in Altoona
An uncomfortable silence
Stacking chickens to Luna

Climactic ending!
Maybe cute, maybe vile
Tonight's ONT
Is Chi-cago style!

That will not happen. Here's an excerpt of a Michael Walsh column that JJ posted in the Feb 6th Morning Report -

"In the end, all these things are related. In Joe Biden, the Left found its perfect candidate -- a shuffling, shambling, lifelong hack who's callously been dining out on the deaths of various family members for more than half a century, and one who's wholly animated by greed, meanness and revenge -- and maneuvered him into the White House, where his lifelong animus against a nation that had previously spurned him on several occasions can be freely indulged: those who denied the political genius of Joseph Robinette Biden, Jr., are now suffering his demented wrath."

>>The Fix was in from the start.

Well, they let SBF off the hook for the most egregious charges because they said, the case would be too complex to explain to a jury.

Which is funny because I seem to remember ENRON being a pretty complex case that the DOJ had no problem explaining to a jury even took out Arthur Anderson in the process.

We all sort of, deep down, knew things were not on the level, I don't think any of realized how not on the level things really are.

128 this newest thing is 'no reasonable jury'

Let's put some "context" on this, as the young kids say.

Four dudes are cooling their heels, right now, in the Federal Pen for taking shoe money - from Adidas - and giving it to college ball players to go to certain colleges. The FBI tightened that shit up totes quick.

And we have political prisoners, which still doesn't get said enough either here or on big media, because they went on a self-guided Senate tour. Even though, on multiple occasions, you've seen one party encourage protesters to crash assemblies in the same building, as well as take over the offices in a different building.

Yet "no reasonable jury" will indict the guy that hid documents next to the Corvette, while indicting the other guy that hid them in a closet, because guy number one is senile.

The failing of the GOP is not saying shit exactly as blunt as I just did.

No way. Watched the paterfamilias descend from mid stage to late stage over the not quite 3 years he lived with me. I saw the descent. There were moments I witnessed, when I knew he was desperately searching inside his head for something he couldn't find. I witness sheer terror and intense pain in his eyes. Even when I became everybody except his son and he was gone, I saw those moments. I want his descent to be slow and long with no one around him who cares for him. It is a horrible disease. The House Republicans should offer a deal to Kamala, and promise they will vote unanimously in her favor if she takes charge of the 25th Amendment circus. There's method in this madness; with her in charge, there's no chance of anyone else grabbing hold of the November nomination. And she's airheaded enough to go along with it.

In 1944 the Germans were developing the plans for the Sanger antipodal bomber that was supposed to skip on the upper layers of the atmosphere. It would have been perfect for bombing NYC and DC, and the plan was to land it on Japanese islands in the Pacific, and then launch it back to Germany.
Then Japan didn't have those islands anymore, and they had more important stuff to do

It would have had a tiny payload too, only good for something like a nuke.

However, he does NOT realize as soon as Dad is dead or has no more political power, the spigot goes off.

Reminds me of the Nat Geo doc about lions v. hyaenas. They focused some attention on the matriarch of the hyaena clan, and how the hierarchy of such clans work.

At one point the matriarch dies, I think it was a clash of hyaenas, so her daughter takes over. The daughter immediately starts f'ing with the female lions.

Day 1 of her new rule: The large male lion hears the commotion from far off, comes into the middle of the scrum and with one bite of the neck, the new matriarch is dead.

You've got to know your limitations.

The original text of Article II said that in case of removal from office (impeachment conviction), death, or "inability", the VP would act as president.

But it very ambiguous, and there was disagreement. Who decided when the President is unable to do his duties?

Garfield was laid up for several days before he died after being shot, Wilson had a stroke, and his wife acted as president, etc. The the Cold War and nuclear Armageddon and all that looming critical.

Kennedy's assassination was the impetus to act and settle that and lay down a clear procedure.

347 Some thoughts about what just popped up for me after watching the Tucker-Putin interview:

Okay, don't trust Putin. Okay, Putin is ex-KGB and is going to make any argument he thinks he can get people to swallow. Okay.

We are approaching another Bush war.

We're "fighting them in Ukraine so we don't have to fight them in Poland!"

To NATO, Poland is "right here" and Ukraine is "over there".

I thought we were done with that.

I thought the Dems, especially, were done with that.

But it's 2024 and we're in another Bush-style war.

Remember when Sci-fi flicks used to have at least one smoking hot female lead?

Well, Disney did NOT remember that, and has lost tens of billions of dollars of market share.

And it is such a simple concept. Adolescent boys are the main target audience. Morons are just adolescent boys that have seen a few more winters.

All sections of the 25th have been used at least once, save for Section 4, the involuntary declaration by the VP and the cabinet.

Reagan was the first to invoke, kinda sorta (you can read about that) when he had surgery. G. HW. Bush almost invoked Sec. 4 when Reagan was shot, but he was on a plane, and Reagan had come out of surgery when he landed.

And then Dubya invoked Sec. 3 and gave power to Cheny a couple time for surgery or anathesia.

Shitpants did the same for Kamala once, I was reading. So for a little bit, Kumswallow was Acting President.

The interesting thing is only the VP can initiate Sec. 4. And the thinking was the VP is the only other elected constitutional Article II office.

Doesn't matter who else, the entire Cabinet thinks POTUS is unfit, the VP must agree and start the procedure.

And if there's a dispute, VP and majority of cabinet say he's unfit, but POTUS says he is, Congress must decide immediately. President can only be overridden by 2/3 vote of both houses of Congress.

Zardoz is the best movie you'll ever see with Sean Connery in a thong. But really, it's the story of what happens when a totally feminized and over intellectualized society runs into One Real Man. I believe the bigger problem is PROCESSING the rare earth minerals.

China has a gigantic lake that is a toxic brew that remains after they have processed all of the good stuff out of the rare earth minerals for the rest of the world.

It is cheaper for us price wise and environmental damage wise to let them do it there.

Of course, the military applications require that we have our own process for obvious reasons. Perhaps a small scale project?

475 Copied shamelessly from Mining.com:

In total, there are now 2.34 billion tonnes of material grading 3,196 parts per million (ppm) total rare earth oxides (TREO), including neodymium (Nd) and praseodymium (Pr) oxides, for 7.48 million tonnes of contained TREO. This includes 1.42 billion tonnes in the measured and indicated category, a 128% increase over the 2023 estimate, at a grade of 3,295 ppm TREO.

SIGN UP FOR THE MINING NEWS DIGEST
Magnet rare earth elements (Nd2O3, Pr6O11, Sm2O3, Dy2O3, and Tb4O7) comprise about 27% of the total resource with an average grade of 774 ppm MREO, with a contained metal estimate of 1.8 million tonnes.

"The new estimate uses a cut-off grade of 1,000 ppm TREO as opposed to the 1,500 ppm used previously. Stantec, the engineering consulting provider with whom ARR is working with to develop a JORC-compliant scoping study at Halleck Creek, determined that a 1,000 ppm cut-off grade meets the conditions for reporting a mineral resource with reasonable prospects of eventual economic extraction."

3300 ppm of Total Rare Earth Oxides does not sound like a fantastically rich deposit to me. They give a cutoff grade of 1000 ppm; values below that are not considered ore. To put this in perspective: at 3300 ppm, assuming 100% recovery (which is unlikely!) a tonne of rock would yield 3.3 grams of total rare earth oxides. You would need to mine 150 tonnes of rock to get a pound of the concentrate.

Well, we wouldn't "need" nearly so much of it if we didn't waste money on wind generators and electric cars. I couldn't find any good numbers on the grade of Chinese deposits. May be a closely held secret. I doubt you will find bonanza-grade deposits of rare earths anywhere in the world. The ore minerals tend to occur as accessories in a wide variety of rock types. One complication is that uranium and thorium can also be found in these minerals, so your tailings will be radioactive.

They used a percentage for grade. If I've got it right, 1000ppm is 0.1%. You've got a lot in the range 0.1 to 1%, a good more in the 1% or higher range. Maybe one in the 10% range (with low total tonnage).

502 Correct my very late at night Math:
1 tonne = 1000 kg = 1,000,000 g
3300 ppm then = 3300 g = 3.3 kg --- where did I go wrong?
Posted by: Ciampino at February 09, 2024 01:45 AM (qfLjt)

You didn't. It was my mistake. 3.3 kilos per tonne, not 3.3 grams. 3.3 grams per tonne would be an acceptable grade for a large open-pit gold mine, but gold is worth $2000 per ounce. I don't believe rare earths are quite that valuable. And TREO, total rare earth oxides, includes some metals that don't have much of a market. And the cost of winning the concentrate from the ore is going to be much higher than that of winning the gold.

More reading on stuff I don't nuttin' 'bout. Apparently, again if I'm understanding what I'm reading, there are some chemical properties of the rare earths, the way the ions behave and all that, that make extraction and concentration of it harder than other traditional elements we mine.

It can be done, but it's harder and more expensive.

Funny that nobody noticed the station going off the air when they cut the power at the transmitter shack. I'll bet that tower was pretty slender, and guyed by cables. Cut the guy wires, let it fall, cut it into ten 20-foot lengths, toss into a hopper trailer, and drive away. Seel for scrap two states away. profit!

Another interesting complication (again, if I'm understanding what I'm reading) with these REE deposits. If you can get something else out of it as well, some other, more traditional element/product out of the ore, that can alter the economic viability.

So, if you got some raw ore, with the REEs and the other, it wouldn't be viable to just go for one or the other, but going for both can be make it viable.

The other thing to remember is that rare earths, like lithium, are trendy right now because of the "green" distortion to the marketplace. This makes it possible for promoters to raise all kinds of money to drill and promote some very marginal mineral occurrences. And if they do get into production, and produce a lot of product, then the price collapses, and then their costs exceed their sales.

The Lanthanides are a group of 14 very similar elements between Lanthanum and Ytterbium. Instead of filling the outer 'shell' they systematically fill up an inner 4f-shell comprising 7 different 4f-orbitals. This makes their chemistry so similar that common separation methods such as differences in solubility are not useful. Ion-exchange and solvent extraction are used.

Morning, JQ! Your putting "rush" next to "bowl" made me think of "toilet bowl brush." Not a good image to start the day, but that's my mind.
