14 Evening and morning to all the AoS satellites in space and beyond! 'Tis 60 F., going up to about 72 today. Two more days of my having to take a different route home because of Carnival parades, then I have my nice four-day weekend.

I hate this time of year. Partly because of the inconvenience of dodging parades, but also because of bittersweet memories of the ex-Mrs. Wolfus No. 2 from 1981. Maybe this will be my last year of dealing with it.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at February 08, 2024 04:12 AM (omVj0)

15 Anyway! Up earlier than I planned. Stirling the great black cat had to say "Good morning, hooman" in his peculiar way, and my upstairs "neighbors" were fighting and slamming doors. At 1:30 in the effin' morning, yet.

Little Dagny the Siberian actually purred when I picked her up for a few moments just now. She's not a lap cat, and about the only time she sleeps with me is when it's cold. But she's always in the same room with me when I'm up.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at February 08, 2024 04:16 AM (omVj0)

16 Hang in there, Wolfus. I have Mardie Grass memories of EX #1 (rip), from 1982. It was a wild trip LOL and I'll never forget the good times...

You gots Good Times Comin' Up! Keep focusing on that.

My boss recently moved to the Garden District. He's only a block from the main Uptown parade route. Doesn't interest him -- but he knows the difficulties. He's been letting us leave around three each afternoon with the exhortation to work from home if need be. (I haven't seen the need.) So my alternate route home, though the road surfaces are even worse than my usual route, is not traffic-choked and I can make it home in about thirty minutes.

I grew up in the French Quarter, half a block from the parade route. In those days the beads were heavy, glass-like stuff. The riders tossed out doubloons with their logo on them (that had begun just a few years before) and beads, and occasionally little "made in Japan" toys, but plastic cups and polyester animals were unheard of.

It was fun when I was nine or ten. As a grownup, I don't want to deal with traffic, parking, crowds, and more traffic coming home. There will be one *near* where I live on Saturday morning, but I can avoid that one if I have to go out.

I don't either. Miss Linda still goes to the occasional parade -- thankfully she no longer wants to drag me along.

The big Rex parade started the "coins," doubloons, in 1960, and nobody knew what they were -- there are stories of people just leaving them on the ground after the parade was over. A real 1960 Rex doubloon would be worth some money to a collector now, I'm sure.

That's a very large sum to churn out imbeciles, you could easily accomplish this for a 1/3 of that.

In fact, you could probably grab a recent border jumper, put them in the classroom and the quality of education would probably rise.

120 Fun with words. My son has always enjoyed words and has a good vocabulary, although some years ago I told him that kids would be put off by this if you used them and they thought he was trying to impress them. Anyway, he often goes to the university library because his double room is like a cell, and he can spread out at the library. He hadn't been there for a few days because he said, " There was no exigency for me to go to the library." I inwardly laughed. Who uses exigency in a sentence? These humorous incidences make for me being annoyed that he has forgotten his wallet when we're driving him back to school and we have to make a 20 minute trip back home to get it.

Yes, it is beautiful. I like the sunrise too, and when my husband and I are driving as it comes up we often sing a song from our hymnal which has as its first line, " When morning gilds the skies,? my heart awaking cries, ' May Jesus Christ be praised." We have a lot of hymns in our hymnal which deal with nature'. One is "This is my Father's World." The man who wrote the words was a minister who lived somewhere near one of the Great Lakes and he used to go for walks in the morning telling his wife, "I'm going to go out and enjoy my fathers world now."
