The Triumph of Pulcinella is a series of paintings originally consisting of four paintings that deal with the carnival and its gallery of musicians, street performers, and quacks. Pulcinella, the original Mr. Punch, is a character from the Italian commedia dell’arte and is easily recognised by his fat, hunchbacked physique, large nose, and conical hat.

Whatever else you think about it, in the real world, there's a black market for such things... a way for evil people to carry on his legacy. If it is necessary to keep the memory of the man alive, to learn "never again," lessons... which we ARE forgetting as we speak, you do that some other way. People still glorify the guy. Maybe this would make sense to a 18th century Italian where Pulcinella was a known figure. Sort of an earlier version of Punch from Punch and Judy puppet shows, based on Commedia Delle 'Arte characters. It was a standard figure so I guess there could be many of them. The idea that they would vacation together shows a sense of humor by the artist and humanizes a classic ne'er-do-well character.
I don't have much to say about the actual painting which is somewhat dull. Very different from his usual colorful images. Posted by: JTB at February 08, 2024 09:57 AM (zudum) Posted by: Tonypete at February 08, 2024 09:57 AM (J47y1) 119

Was there an insurrection? The authors of the 14th had just come out a civil war that lasted 4 years and had 1 million casualties. That was what they meant by insurrection and not some riot that mostly involved trespassing. Due Process? The various states are unilaterally denying the GOP to fully select its candidate, more directly denying Trump to be on the ballot and the voter to make free choice, using extra judicial process to indict, try and convict. These states are usurping the the power of the legal system and violating President Trump's and the voters Constitutional rights. Do State Rights allow them the deny a Federal Candidate, in particular one that is running for a National office, from appearing on the ballot? I find this most problematic as it skews the the entire election and effectively disenfranchises the millions of voters in that state. In second grade I got drafted into a performance of a minuet to be held at the local auditorium. Don't think it's a fair analogy; Churchill's paintings to Mein Kampf.
Posted by: Braenyard But Churchill's paintings to Hitler's paintings is. Let's be honest, there's nothing offensive in Hitler's paintings. It's not like he gleefully painted the ovens at Auschwitz burning Jews. He just painted buildings in Vienna -- good from a draftsmanship perspective, I guess, but not really emotionally engaging. Hitler was a very sinister fellow, but his art is benign. As was Churchill's, though it was better executed and was legitimate "art" on an emotional level. Two things I love about Trump's ad linked in the sidebar:
1) That final line is a killer. 2) It's directly aimed at Biden. Trump knows he has the nom and he's moving forward as such. I wish he had gone in that direction in the first place. Even as a DeSantis voter, I knew it was Trump's to lose. He wasted too much time and energy on people who were and continue to be irrelevant. Seth Tillman and Josh Blackman, constitutional law scholars, have both done serious work on exactly who is an officer of the US. Quite notably, the president is not considered an officer of the US and if you note the wording of Article 3 of the 14th mentions electors but not the president. Since the president is not mentioned specifically, unlike senators, representatives, electors, etc. in that Article. The only all encompassing language is officer of the US but Scotus precedent has never held that the President is considered an officer of the US. This would mean quite simply that the office of the president and candidacy for that office is not excluded under the 14th.

296 Seth Tillman and Josh Blackman, constitutional law scholars, have both done serious work on exactly who is an officer of the US.

Regarding the remembering Hitler thing, there's a little controversy going on in zoology right now.
A German entomologist who was a big fan of Hitler discovered a new species of cave beetle in Slovenia in the 1930s and named it, in his honor, Anotphthalmus hitleri. Now, a scientific name, once it is bestowed, is supposed to be unchangeable (except if it is a duplicate name bestowed on an already-named species, which is not the case here). But some zoologists want to rename this beetle, for obvious reasons. It seems to me that they could make an argument for it in this case, but, again, where do you stop? Although there are several species named for Obama that I'd like to see changed. Interesting situation, nonetheless. Posted by: Bulgaroctonus at February 08, 2024 10:45 AM (9yWhg) 312

The attitudinal and positivist understanding of the law is a) a judge's politics, and b) the office the judge holds determines whether the action is legitimate or not. Let's look at the text of 14A Sec 3:
No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability. It is clear - if you were in one of these groups, and you engaged in insurrection or rebellion, you can't hold any elective office. In the "these groups" are explicit definitions. None of them include the President of the United States. What that means a President can be in rebellion and still be reelected President. That's what it says. My guess is that Scotus overrules CO simply to avoid states competing in excluding candidates for prezzie. Given that Congress repealed the punishments in the 1890's, Scotus can simply rule the controversy moot and the 14th Sec. 3 was a Civil War amendment that has become a dead letter now.
Posted by: whig at February 08, 2024 10:57 AM (jxAhR) I think they will rule on that definition of "an officer of the United States" It will do as you say, stop the competition to disqualify - but it will also still leave open the question whether Trump was engaging in insurrection. This trial might have the secondary benefit of destroying the idiotic insurrection claim.

They military salutes him as they do other officer and he salutes them. The military does not salute civilians.

I've been to Hawaii several times and 3 of the islands. Beautiful beaches and all. But man, everyone is lazy as fuck there. The whole Hawaiian Time thing is just an excuse for not wanting to do shit.

Mike Wallace interviewed Khomeini soon after he came to power and everyone thought it was great. - Bulgaroctonus
I remember somebody at NR (this was long before it's spectacular decline, of course) pointed out that Wallace kept addressing Khomeini as "Imam". "If Wallace had interviewed Hitler, would he have referred to him as Fuehrer? (Mein Fuehrer?)". I feel like Commedia Dell'Arte was one of the first cosplay experiences in more modern times. Probably part of a tradition of earlier, more ritualistic rites.
