We're A Force For Good!

For several years now, it hasn't been unusual to see social networking/social media sites advertising on the web and on TV. Recently, I started to notice what might be a new trend in advertising for social media platforms. I've seen numerous ads both on YouTube and on linear TV for social media platforms advertising themselves not as fun or hip or cool or whatever, but as forces for good. I haven't seen this for Meta properties (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, etc.) or for X, but I've seen many of these ads for Snapchat and TikTok.

The two platforms take significantly different approaches in their "force for good" advertising. Snapchat's new "More Snapchat" campaign starts out by highlighting how nasty, corrosive and fake social media is, along with its tendency to create echo chambers. It highlights all of this in the name of trying to establish market differentiation: by claiming that Snapchat is not a social network at all, and that Snapchat is indeed the antidote to the ills of social media. From the campaign's website:

People feel exhausted by the social media popularity contest. Fed up with having to look pretty or perfect in every post. Tired of competing for likes and comments. Misled by misinformation.
But Snapchat is not social media. It never was. In fact, it was built as an antidote to social media.
Snapchat opens to a camera, and not a feed of content, so we can share our perspective easily with those who matter most to us.
You know, the people we're friends with in real life; the ones we feel comfortable sharing our full range of emotions with -- the ups and downs, the good and bad -- without the pressure to post the perfect thing.

This is, of course, bullshit.

Snapchat is nominally 1:1 rather than 1:many/many:many content, but it still has many if not most of the downsides of social media more generally - including its own 1:many/many:many functions called "Stories" and Discover." Not to mention that the platform's main user base - teens and 20-somethings - famously use the platform for sexting and "revenge porn" fairly commonly. This "We're Snapchat. We're Different. We're Better. We're the Answer" shtick is not remotely believable.

But even worse is TikTok's campaign they launched last year. Called "TikTok Sparks Good," it's about TikTok posts that had some putative good effect like reducing drunk driving or helping out the elderly in a village somewhere. Perhaps it's true. I have no way to know, but I doubt it. Even if it is, though, it doesn't offset the enormous wreckage in the wake of TikTok. TikTok is probably the most corrosive, addicting and damaging social media platform - and that's before you even get to the problems with its ownership by Red China.

The drunk driving "TikTok Sparks Good" (not in the YouTube playlist linked above, but I saw it as a YouTube preroll ad recently) is particularly amusing given the "TikTok Challenge" involving drunk driving. It's almost as if TikTok is choosing to respond to controversies by highlighting a counter-example and wearing it as a mantle of courage and goodness. I can't wait for the "TikTok Sparks Good" ad featuring the upsides to mass surveillance and crushed attention spans.

This is all obviously a cynical expression of contempt in a way that is nakedly hypocritical and dishonest. I fully expect Meta to jump on board next with "Facebook: Not just for screaming at relatives" and "Instagram: not just for food pics and T n' A" ads.

But what I find curious about all of this is, "why?" Why these campaigns? Social media is toxic, destructive, atomizing and everyone more or less knows it at this point. It's a bad influence on kids. It's addictive. It distorts reality. None of this is new. More importantly, there are no threats to social media. There is no regulatory risk for the social media platforms. There is no legislative push to keep minors off the platforms. There is no major market pressure or customer revolt. Social media is beloved by the government and the IC and the platforms play ball with the Party. They're virtually untouchable and live in a world without a single existential threat.

So why the "we're not evil, we promise" messaging push? What is motivating it? What do these platforms fear that they are trying to get out in front of?

Maybe, but I kind of doubt it. Engagement is fairly stable. It isn't growing dramatically anymore, but there has been no market rejection or phase-out of the platforms. Tastes change with age (old people are on Facebook and YouTube, young people are on Snapchat and TikTok, for example), but the market as a whole is pretty solid.

How these platforms facilitate child trafficking and online harassment mobs that ruin lives?!?

There was the lawsuit against twitter before Elon bought it, and it was amazing the speed with which he shut down a lot of pedo grooming, child porn sharing, and child trafficking. It became obvious that twitter *allowed* its platform to be used for it (especially with the head of Trust and Safety having tweeted in favor of sex w/underage kids).

most of the content you see on there is created by the people who didn't leave UI/UX practice when they realized it was evil (like me) so they are now Content Directors/CX basically

they post a question or some prompt pretending to be a normal neighbor or something just to get you to answer them and up engagement for the platforms

it's super creepy

can't wait till all those kiddos get replaced by AI - which is already happening. for now the smart ones can "herd the bots" but that won't be necessary much longer

Yeah, possible. With saturation comes the need to differentiate. That is absolutely a factor.

But the pivot from "fun and cool" to "force for good" is weird, and two major platforms have rolled this out over the past few months.

I wonder if it might have to do with the election, but I'm not sure. The topic of censorship and manufactured consent on social media *will* become a talking point, I think (it already is, albeit not a loud one) and this might be an effort to create an attitude or opinion of the platforms as "good" and therefore that isn't really a factor.

Like I said, I dunno. It just seems weird.

Every time I see my 15-year-old nephew he's showing me Snaps of fights in his school. He thinks it's funny (especially his fight when he took on a friend's bully), so it's impossible to convince him that if he had gotten knocked out those same friends filming him would still be sharing it out.

SnapChat is actually the worst of all social media. It's almost 100% purely a "hey look at me, I'm better and more fun than you" narcissist circle-jerk.

At least with other social media, there's some commentary and news (or "news") and something more than desperate narcissists -- and of course armies of THOTs and THOT-adjacents -- sending heavily staged, filtered pics back and forth. SnapChat is literally nothing but that.

Last summer there was an article written by a Meta Security executive who discovered how unsafe facebook was when his early teen daughter opened an account and within an hour or so she was being contacted by creeps.
Re: Instagram prostitution, here's the details:
Before Facebook bought Instagram, it was much cleaner. It also had restrictions set on questionable content. Now, any kid with a phone can scroll through thousands of accounts where Instagram models post soft porn. As long as emojis are barely covering someone’s parts, it doesn’t violate Instagram’s standards.

Here's the problem with that. If this is true, then why does Snapchat exist? What does it do that your appless cell phone can't? If you're just sending stuff to people you know in real life, then you have that person's phone number. You can snap a picture and send it via SMS (well, MMS) with no app at all. Like WhatsApp, Snapchat does not need to exist if it's only what they say it is (outside of the US is a bit different, where SMS/MMS is still tolled and apps aren't).

Filters? Your phone can probably do that for you.

Snapchat's only real feature is absence of persistence - the recipient can't keep the picture forever if you say they can't. It's one of the reasons it's so popular for sexting.

Missouri v Biden will be heard at the Supreme Court in a couple months. It deals with the Biden Administration censoring social media to hide information they didn't like to shape narratives.

Losing Twitter was a huge blow to the left because it is one of the few places where conservatives can share information the media refuses to report.

Parts of social media are garbage but other parts are very useful.

Yup. There is nothing that can prevent you from taking a picture of a screen with another camera.

But it does take a modicum of effort, and anything that takes a modicum of effort is less likely to happen. But Snapchat's basic feature is by no means perfect or impossible to work around.

I think there's a difference between and echo chamber and a place where people generally have similar views on topics. I mean we just went through a brief primary where the owner of the place made his views on which candidate he supported and was equally clear that those who didn't were zombies or ill repute.

I think half the women on Facebook use their first and middle name only. That's what I did. Then all of a sudden in my "People You May Know' every name in there had Mohammad as first, middle, or last name and I bailed on that name because good reason.

I have new FB name now and occasionally put some stuff up I know the censors there won't like. But it's basically worthless to me.
