'Tis 53 F. outdoors, about 6 more than predicted. Dry all week, which the parade people and the spectators will all appreciate. That's the only tolerable thing about Mawdi Grass: It happens when we can reasonably expect cool(er) temps. I've known MGs which were a damp 80 F. and some that fell to near freezing.

Got a question for Pixy. Houthis have made a veiled threat to sabotage the underwater Internet cables in the Red Sea. Apparently there are some security analysts who think they (Iran) may have the capability. Approximately 17% of world traffic is carried on those cables including the AE-1, the main interlink between Europe, SE Asia and Africa. Would that affect world wide internet performance?

Eh. Undersea cables get damaged all the time, mostly by ships dragging their anchors. There are other ships that do nothing but sail around the world fixing them. Bit more of a problem if the Houthis are firing missiles at the repair ship, though. Posted by: Pixy Misa at February 06, 2024 04:18 AM (BLOW1) 16

Pixy the other night mentioned something about Top level domains, rolling your own, which I've done for my little network (ie .lan and .lan1), and noted you can roll your own certificate authority. Well, I did that. Linux allows you do to that with OpenSSL. I did it. To do so, well, all that x509 and crypto is a convoluted, obfuscated and hair-pulling complex mess, but I managed to do it. At one time, I had dozens of tabs open in a browser on my Linux virtual machine, and another dozen open the Windows machine. I saved lengthy command line sessions to a text file, over 100KB in a length, to help as a reference. But I did it. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley at February 06, 2024 04:30 AM (w6EFb) 28

That's gone due to upgrading OpenWRT on the router here. That is so complicated, I actually bought another identical Linksys router to put the new version on, so I could swap, so's not to interrupt Miley's internet. :-) MAC addresses changed. You can clone them to the old ones, and change the IPv6 DUID thingy, but it's too much trouble. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley at February 06, 2024 04:35 AM (w6EFb) 30

There was a nasty routing problem with my little VPN I had to due to the change. I thought it was something the new OpenWRT version and maybe the newer OpenVPN version, but nope, it was just a typo of sorts. My IPv6 prefix changed. I get a /60 prefix, for 16 possible subnets. The new prefix was identical to the old one, save for the last block, which was 5f70 vs the old one of 52f0. I couldn't see it. Took me over a week to finally catch it. Having your own means of generating your own certs is a life altering experience. Not that it's a huge deal in itself, but realizing that that's a thing you can just do opens up a whole weird inscrutable world when the extent of your networking expertise is "make it 255.255.255.0, and if that don't work, i guess you're boned".

After I'd upgraded both routers, the one here at the one at my mothers, being the two endpoints of the VPN tunnel I run, I was getting logging set up an working, and thus got to paying attention the the router firewall logs. I noticed the script kiddie bot port scanners were hitting my VPN port about 3 or 4 times per day. The logs showed someone would hit the port, and try to connect. OpenVPN's security was working as it should, and dropped the attempt quickly. It uses this extra layer, "tls-crypt" that uses an extra pre-shared key over the control channel. Someone that doesn't have that won't be able to complete the intial handshake, much less try to start authentication and all that. But it was coming in over IP4, when I thought I'd set it up to go over IPv6 only. Then I figured out why. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley at February 06, 2024 05:03 AM (w6EFb) 39
There is the this "IP4 mapping" address range, where the kernel will map incoming IP4 addresses to this special IPv6 range. This is to allow, in a dual stack set up, IP4 traffic to connect fine with stuff listening on IP6 only. To help through the transition. Well, that's what was going on. It will do this by default unless you tell the firewall not to. I hadn't explicitly set it not to do that. I have now. Those incoming VPN probes get dropped immediately for IP4 traffic. The IPv6 address space is so huge, the port scanning is too intractable so far. The logs show nothing on IPv6. THe only dropped packets there are from some erroneous behavior, by software on either end. It's usually a TCP connection is supposed to be closed, or the firewall thinks it is, but the server on the other end doesn't think so, and is trying to reconnect. You'll see a few of those every so often. But on IP4, it's scary seeing all those probes coming in. If you look at the source IP addresses, and search on them, you'll find their on abuse lists, and can read about all the shit they were trying. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley at February 06, 2024 05:11 AM (w6EFb) 42
An analogy is this. Consider your neighborhood. You've got roving gangs constantly going around checking all the doors and windows and seeing if there's anyway they can get in a house. And this is going on constantly. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley at February 06, 2024 05:12 AM (w6EFb) 43

Border Bill Gives US District Court in DC 'Sole and Original Jurisdiction' Over Challenges to Law
Klein does not offend separation-of-powers limitations for Congress to create or amend a law that retroactively applies to lawsuits that began before the new law was enacted. Such new law can target a specific case or set of cases. Additionally, it appears legislation can be designed in a manner that ensures victory for a particular party so long as the reviewing court may still independently apply the new law to the facts of the case. And the first domino falls over" We have a huge Volvo manufacturing plant up the road from stately VIA Manor. They intend to shift to 100% EV production very shortly. Let's see how that goes. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at February 06, 2024 07:29 AM (a1415) 192
Just over four years later, the U.S. Supreme Court will have to determine whether it does. On Thursday, the nation's highest court is scheduled to hear arguments over whether Trump can remain on the ballot in Colorado, where the state's Supreme Court ruled that he violated Section 3.
It's the first time in history that the nation's highest court has heard a case on Section 3, which was used to keep former Confederates from holding government offices after the amendment's 1868 adoption. Does not section 5 refer to a real law? Posted by: rhennigantx at February 06, 2024 07:30 AM (ENQN6) Posted by: JT at February 06, 2024 07:30 AM (T4tVD) 194
I don't know about Volvos nowadays. One of my nieces just paid $2000 to have a timing belt changed. That doesn't seem right, but I haven't touched a Volvo since the 80s.

Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at February 06, 2024 07:29 AM (a1415) Good morning, didn’t SC give a large amount of money and tax incentives to Volkswagen to build a EV Scout? Wonder how that is going to work out. Posted by: Rufus T. Firefly at February 06, 2024 07:33 AM (8e0w3) 196

On the older P-2 chassis, that should go $700.00 to $1,300.00 depending if the water pump and idler get swapped out at the same time. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at February 06, 2024 07:34 AM (a1415) 197
The Court ruled that under the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (NVRA) Maine’s voter roll is a public record and election officials cannot hide the information from the public.
George Behizy posted this from the ruling, “Whether voter registration rolls are accurate and current cannot be determined without inspecting the Voter File…In other words, the evaluation of voter registration rolls would be impossible if the results of Maine’s voter list registration and maintenance activities were not subject to public disclosure. -- I don't know how that works, but I'm betting they somehow defer it or do whatever to wash their hands of it. If they're pushed I think they'll "states rights!" it and say it's fine. Same reason they didn't do anything in the 2020 election. There are parties to go to, and they have nice homes they don't want messed up. I posted a blurb about Ford's EV battery plant and the mold problem they've got. It's down in Glendale, KY. One of 2 supposed to be built there. The second one may never get built... not because of mold but failing EV sales.
The people down there got taken for a ride. Posted by: Martini Farmer at February 06, 2024 07:36 AM (Q4IgG) 200

She won't have the car that long anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if she gets an EV next. Because they cost so much less to maintain, you know. Posted by: fd at February 06, 2024 07:37 AM (vFG9F) 202
Just got a new Lenovo Tab11 "free" as a package deal w a phone. Absolute junk. Battery issues - runs down quick takes 8-9 hours to "quick charge", keyboard is clunky and poor ergonomics, etc. Got what was paid.

The Expanse book series is a very well done space opera that is very relatable to current times.
The Expanse show was done very well for the first two seasons, especially the effects and action which were absolutely top notch. However Amazon saved it from cancellation by watering it down with a firehose and turning it into a dialogue based soap opera. Posted by: pawn at February 06, 2024 07:41 AM (QB+5g) 205

Again, Without knowing the engine, it's hard to determine. But back in the day, those were typically changed at 120,00 miles. And when I asked my Volvo dealer about changing out the water pump at the same time, he was like "Pumps go 250,00 miles, easy. Change them out with OEM on every second belt change" Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at February 06, 2024 07:43 AM (a1415) 209

Speaking of batteries, regular 'dry cell' battery prices have gone stupid as well. Damn 'D' cells of quality are around a buck a piece, or higher. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at February 06, 2024 07:00 AM I buy AAA, AA, and 9 volt rechargeable batteries and get many years out of them. They may be a little pricier at first but by the second or third year I'm sure they're saving money. According to Amazon records I've had them since 2018. You might wanna consider. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley at February 06, 2024 04:54 AM Dude, it's not that hard to understand. You're encrypting messages with private keys and distributing the public keys associated with those private keys in the messages. You have to trace that back to a private key that you somehow get a different way. The details are of interest only to the people who write the tools, because standards documents tend to be opaque to those who don't know enough to be able to write them. The hard part is getting people to distribute your public key as part of those that are inherently trusted, and the expensive part about being a widely-used CA is doing the necessary authentication of the CSR's that you're presented with. I've set up a CA two or three times, once for myself and the rest of the times for an employer. I usually use a package like xca for the job, because like Pixy says it's fiddly, but it's not rocket science. Those command-line arguments go into shell scripts and are forgotten. I prefer my e-book readers not be capable of doing anything else that would just distract me. I like e-ink. I can read very well in bright sunlight or with a good backlight in any lighting conditions. I can even switch to darkness mode where the letters are white and the background black. I use that feature as I'm getting close to going to sleep with the lights off. I use a kindle oasis. (not kindle fire tablet).
