Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Gun Thread: Sunday After WW's Birthday Edition!![]() Fundamentals So what am I talking about when I mention fundamentals? Welp, I think of fundamentals as the four distinct groups of actions needed to accurately execute a shot. For handguns these are most commonly broken into the following; stance, grip, sight alignment and trigger pull. But where among the four do we find mastering the flinch reflex? I'd say it belongs in the trigger-pull department. Do you agree or do you think it belongs somewhere else, or perhaps not in the fundamentals at all? Q: Weasel, what is a flinch reflex? A: If you have it, you'll very likely find evidence of this insidious reflexive action on the target. Shooting low left/right? You may be anticipating the shot and flinching. Q: Weasel, how do I get rid of this insidious reflexive flinch action? A: Don't do it anymore. Yep, it's really that simple. Just stop flinching. Don't believe you're doing it and your improperly torqued socks are causing the low left/right results? Just have someone take a video of you shooting at the range. I mean it. Have someone record you firing two or three sets of groups and study your form. Disgusted with what you see? Millions of years ago in the caveman days, we developed a flinch reflex in reaction to situations such as nearby lightning, charging dinosaurs and rival groups such as the Hill People throwing rocks at us. It is now so ingrained in our DNA that today a bright flash and loud explosion a couple feet in front of us tends to make us jump and look away. Since the smart part of our brain realizes all the noise and smoke is coming from the thing we're holding, we instinctively get all twitchy and push down in an attempt to save ourselves from the loud flashy thing flipping back and whacking us in the face. That's the flinch. With me so far? How many times have you fired a gun and had it fly out of your hands, hitting yourself in the nose and landing somewhere behind you? None you say? Approximately 0.0 times? Well then why on earth are you flinching? Because your caveman DNA told you to? Who exactly is in charge of your brain, the caveman? You have to tell yourself not to flinch, and then practice not flinching. This is why its so important to develop proper muscle memory, so you can concentrate on one aspect of fundamentals without everything else going to shit. Good News/Bad News Well I have good news and bad news. Bad news first. You will probably never stop doing it altogether and every once in a while will catch yourself flinching. I still find myself doing it at times when I am not focused on fundamentals. Good news: You can train yourself to mostly overcome the reaction by simply telling yourself not to do it. Again, I'm being serious here. Go to the range, get yourself all set to shoot, and focus on not flinching all the way through the trigger pull. You will have to practice this, but believe me, it works. Here's a Sig Sauer Academy dude looking all ball-headed with a good range drill. Ever tried this? Guns of the Horde This week we have another real winner from our pal Ed L, a Colt Improved M1911/M1911A1 Transition Model! ![]() ![]() Source: Colt .45 Service Pistols, Models of 1911 and 1911A1, by Charles W. Clawson The US Army was mostly satisfied with the M1911's performance in WWI, but soldiers had some gripes about its ergonomics. In 1920, US Army Ordinance asked the US Cavalry to evaluate proposed modifications to the M1911. The US Cavalry proposed three significant changes to improve the M1911's ergonomics: 1) lengthening the grip safety's tang at the upper part of the grip safety to reduce the risk of "hammer bite", 2) reducing the length of the trigger, and 3) adding a hump to the mainspring housing at the lower rear of the pistol to aid shooters in getting and maintaining a proper grip on the pistol. By June 1923, the US Army had contracted with Colt to produce 10,000 "Improved M1911" pistols for $26.50 each. In order to save money, Colt did not include any magazines with new production pistols. Instead, the US Army supplied leftover surplus WWI production magazines, one per pistol. ![]() These pistols carry the stylized initials "WTG" just below the slide stop. The "W" and "T" are encircled by the curve of the "G". These are the initials of then Captain Walter T. Gorton, assigned to the Colt factory as the Inspector of Ordinance. Captain Gorton's initials signified final acceptance of the completed pistol. A close look at individual components of the pistol such as the slide, barrel, and frame will reveal "H" markings stamped on them. The "H" mark represented provisional acceptance of key parts of the pistol by Francis L. Hosmer, Captain Gorton's civilian deputy and foreman of the US Army Ordinance inspection team working at the Colt factory. Francis Hosmer was a veteran employee. He inspected M1911s at Colt since the first ones rolled off the production line in 1912 through most of WWI. The right side of the slide carries the same "MODEL OF 1911. U.S. ARMY" that earlier M1911 pistols did. The "M1911A1" designation didn't become official until 1926, but the drawings used for manufacture did not add the "M1911A1" designation until 1938. ![]() ![]() The final photo shows the signature features of M1911A1 pistols. Visible are 1) the shortened trigger, 2) receiver cut behind the trigger to improve trigger reach for those with short fingers, 3) the extended grip safety tang, 4) the checkered "hump" of the mainspring housing, and 5) the fully checkered walnut grips. Like all interwar pistols, Colt finished these pistols in a high polish blue. This pistol shows wear and spots to the finish, indicating significant use or exposure to the elements. Colt shipped this pistol to Springfield Armory, MA, on February 7, 1924, which makes this pistol exactly 100 years old this month.Wow! Thanks Ed L! I am sure I speak for the whole group when I say these are very much appreciated! Gun Gadgets Attaching stuff to guns seems to be a popular pastime for many. I'm old skool and want iron sights on handguns and that's it. Talk or Shut Up? So we've covered whether or not to talk to the police after a self-defense shooting incident where you are the trigger-puller before, and I have always maintained talking to the cops before talking to a lawyer was a bad idea. I still think it's a bad idea in case you're curious. But does that mean after shooting a bad guy you just go completely mute and say nothing? I don't think that's a good choice, either. I do think some sort of general statement about what has happened to the police is appropriate before invoking your right to not make things a bazillion times worse for yourself by getting all chatty with the fuzz. The key, I believe, is to have a plan in advance if the unthinkable occurs. Let me repeat that. Have some idea of what you would say to the police before asking for a lawyer and shutting the hell up. Having a basic plan might just keep you from blathering on and making problematic statements. This first video is from Mas Ayoob on the Wilson Combat channel discussing the issue some time ago. Important point on that live/dry-fire drill is taking out the magazine. Because most (I think) semi-autos lock back with an empty magazine. While you can carry on if your magazine locks back by dropping the slide lock, you've just broken the momentum - you've reset your brain and aren't now thinking "Get that second shot off."
Of course, the other way to do it is to have a range buddy load your magazines with duds in them somewhat randomly. Especially because you're not anticipating it, you will REALLY see your flinch and it WILL get your attention. That one you have to obviously pay attention to unloading the dummy round so you don't lose it somewhere in front of the firing line or something. Question for the Horde Brain Trust:
What are your thoughts on non-lethal self-defense "guns" like the Byrna pepper ball guns? Background: This is for my oldest daughter who lives in a not great part of a large city. She has been walking her dog on the park trails, which are pretty darn secluded and is worried about a person stalking her with bad intent. She is intelligent, she has good situation awareness. However, she is NOT careful 100% of the time. If she is having a bad day, she can check out for long periods. If she had a firearm in a concealed carry purse, she might do something like walk away from her grocery cart and have the gun stolen. I think the BEST advice is to train her properly for a real firearm. However, I am not sure that will be sufficient, given her personality quirks. Any advice on the "half measure" of using a pepper ball gun? Posted by: Pillage Idiot at February 04, 2024 07:15 PM (HlyYF) 24

Good evening gub threaders and all the ships at sea!
Today was a DMV MGC shooting day and MiniMoMe. We lacked our historian due to car trouble. And, we waited longer at the range to shoot than we have ever before - almost an hour and a half. We are not sure why. Perhaps it is coincident with the The Nation's Gun Show and that explains it. But there were a LOT of people shooting today. Disagree on red dots. I’ve transitioned to them on all of my carry guns. I have lost the elasticity of my eyes at my age, I can’t get a clear front sight and clear enough target in my sight picture anymore. I noticed my shooting falling off with irons. Trained with a few red dot shooters and I’m back to good. As for the batteries that’s a bs issue. I change them every January 1st never had one die. I use all trijicon rmr or sro’s.

I'll bite on the red dot. I have the factory one on my P365XL and lurv it. It's a co-witness (I think that's the right term) so that the dot lines up with the iron sights but you've still got the iron sights. If the red dot fails you've still got sights.
I don't think I'd recommend a new shooter start with a red dot pistol right out of the gate, but for all I know it might make the person an even better shot and make the entire experience more enjoyable. Since guns like the MPX and Scorpion and AR pistols are also pistols, that's where red dots shine. 100 yard confidence with a pistol? Yes please. Which I've said before is what I think was part of the problem with braced pistols. That level of accuracy, controllability, and safety for your family and neighbors in a do-it-all home defense weapon is likely frowned upon by regulatory agencies. Thanks again, Weasel. Hammer bite from the 1911 didn't really become a non-issue until the advent of beavertail and the bobbed hammer. Ride your bike. If someone else likes something and can do something, that's awesome. Don't try to keep up with them if their ability or interest is beyond you, both on the road and in spending money. If yours is set up the way you like it and it allows confidence, stick with it until you find something you'd like to incorporate. If it doesn't work stop using it. Speaking of dots on "pistols" I changed up one of our EP-9's. I discovered that you can get HK clone diopter sights for $20. They would not work with the red dot I had on a high riser so I brought it onto a low riser and cowitnesssed...almost. As it turned out, the front sight with the post elevated as far as it would go the sights are too low to work with the EP9. I am thinking these are made for an AR and the EP9 is too short for them to line up? Or maybe it's just cheap Chinese junk. Hard to say. But it looks cool. However, I have to say I like the dot on the low riser. We got it dialed in at the range today.
I'll have to try the diopter sight on an AR. Posted by: blaster at February 04, 2024 07:30 PM (IFNME) 59

Give yer gal a small caliber, like 22lr. Not the best of all options but with Uppercut, punch and Silvertip out of a decent model like the Smith Compact 22, it's a lot more impressive than chemicals and a stern look. The small caliber club gets more inviting the older one gets. I am 61 and change. My wife carries 22 or p32 with extended magazine every day. That's one of the few things keltec got right: the p32. but when shooting at something edible
Posted by: Thomas Paine at February 04, 2024 07:05 PM (lTGtQ) Big question: do you ever take a second shoot when shooting at edible things? Because the flinch is most noticeable (for anyone not very noob) on the follow-up shots, unless you're doing speed drills, I think. The first shot everyone focuses and concentrates on that "surprise" of the round going off. But, then they want to get that second shot downrange and (unless they slow down enough to make the second shot another first shot) instinct takes over. Of course, the other way to cure that "second round" flinch is to go full-auto. Just remember to hold that trigger down. Posted by: GWB at February 04, 2024 07:34 PM (32nmx) 73

I like that Bald Man's drill but I think he was going a little slow to show how it's done. Try to go as fast as you can while staying safe! Took the BM-59 out to distance and rapid fire drills this week, haven't shot her much since I got her a few years ago. Sweet rifle, runs great and very accurate out to 600 yards from the bench and off hand rapid fire out to 125 yards simulating moving to contact she was easy to hit with with those nice Garand sights. Gonna shoot her all month and get more in tune with her nuances. Need to get her a bayonet though, no have. Posted by: Hairyback Guy at February 04, 2024 07:42 PM (R/m4+) 85

& in answer to the Question of the Week: nope, as far as pistols go, iron sights all the way. the SIG P290 I bought a few years ago had the factory laser on it, that was one of the reasons I bought it, but after a year or so I removed it ... I was wasting a lot of milliseconds on turning it on and I didn't like that one bit.
regulars here know that my pistol practice is all about fast draw & fire to center body mass at +/- 23 feet ( a bit over Tueller drill) range. I can get a shot on target under those conditions, and that's really all I'm looking for; I rarely even use the iron sights for this. once in a while I will expend a few rounds on notionally shooting a squirrel or bunny with a j-frame or .22 mini for survival purposes, but rly that's about all the bullseye-type shooting I ever do. & not casting any shade on people who do go for mor accuracy at longer ranges, just my own low expectations at this point in time. which are kind of that if it all works out in the way of the worst-case scenario I am not going into that good night alone, thankyouverymuch. Keep in mind that the military didn't train to use the sights in CQB like we do today, especially in WWII. Instead, they used point shooting techniques originally taught by the likes of William Fairbairn to the Shanghai Municipal Police, or Jelly Bryce or Walter Walsh to the FBI. Point shooting remained the norm for pistol shooting until the early 1960s. The original users of the 1911 would probably wonder what we're complaining about w/ the crappy sights on vintage 1911s and say, "Well, sonny, we didn't really need them" or something like that. Posted by: Pillage Idiot at February 04, 2024 07:37 PM (HlyYF) Pillage, the problem I have with the pepper ball guns is that you're still talking a gun - that is, you have to aim it and get the round to hit the target. Unlike spray, it isn't an area weapon along the whole distance, only once it's hit something and burst. So, it's probably a placebo if there's no range time (and they do sell practice balls for it) and discipline to be accurate. The idea that you can just give this to a homeowner that's scared of guns and they're suddenly protected is very wrong, IMO. So, even with the pepper ball gun, the answer becomes "Be capable of defending yourself. And know how you need to react to survive." I might go with a .22 revolver, particularly a Magnum or WMR(?). And spend the time with her making her comfortable and safe with it. Or do the same with the pepper ball gun. Posted by: GWB at February 04, 2024 07:52 PM (32nmx) 104

Went to the Chantilly gun show on Friday and Saturday. Friday was a bit slow, but Saturday was packed. For Colt Python fans, Trader Jerry had one of the new blued finish Pythons (sold within the first hour after the show opened on Friday) and a 5" barreled Python. The barrel looks different because the vent pattern has to be change somewhat to accommodate the new length. But it did feel good in the hand when I picked it up.
If you hadn't heard the news from the 2024 SHOT Show, B&T will introduce its version of a "Hush Puppy" pistol this year. Using a Glock 19 chassis, it's outfitted with a co-witnessed Aimpoint Accro red dot sight embedded integrally into the slide and a small compact wipe suppressor up front. It also includes a slide lock so you can lock the slide up so it doesn't move when you fire the pistol. This recalls the S&W Mark 22 Mod 0 pistol used by the SEALS in Vietnam. But be prepared to pay dearly; nothing from B&T is cheap. Posted by: Ed L at February 04, 2024 07:59 PM (yRXSd) 113

S&W M&P M2.0 Metal Spec Series. (Twice the ampersands!)
23 round mags, compensator, tall sights, green finish. ========= Last week I was asking about the S&W FPC 9MM. One of the stores here [that was out of stock of it] had a video where a pretty woman was testing one right out of the box. She said the magazine-release for the butt-stored mags was awkward to use [the left-side switch releases the right-side mag; and the right-side switch releases the left-side one]. Is it like that for this S&W M&P M2.0 one too? Posted by: andycanuck (2yu8s) at February 04, 2024 08:02 PM (2yu8s) 116
Oh, darn!
I see from DDG that the S&W M&P M2.0 Metal Spec Series is a pistol and not a carbine or rifle. Forgive my #115 stupidity. Posted by: andycanuck (2yu8s) at February 04, 2024 08:04 PM (2yu8s) 117
A term I don't see much these days when discussing fundamentals is: follow through. For shotgunning it means continuing the swing through the target. For black powder shooting it means maintaining a steady hold on the target even after the gun fires. The slower ignition calls for a longer hold compared to modern guns. It's also a safety factor in case of a hang fire. I know my trap shooting and target work improved a lot once I included that aspect into my range sessions.
Diogenes mentioning golf brought that to mind. Posted by: JTB at February 04, 2024 08:05 PM (zudum) 118

I think you should test it in everything you have that takes 9mm. Better to know what will take it now rather than waiting for SHTF. I have shot Turkish ammo for my Benelli M4 and H&K SP5. Both worked fine except for one misfeed due to a dented round of 12 gauge I had. Posted by: Ed L at February 04, 2024 08:06 PM (yRXSd) 119
A laser designator and a red dot sight are two different things. I’m talking about red dot sights. I get the whole point and shoot and it has its place but at any distance further than a few feet in public I’m going to place my sight on my target.

SIG P229 would work better as a carry gun, I think. I got to carry an M11 (SIG P228/P229) during my time in Afghanistan. The M11 carries nicely (better than the Beretta M9), but I can't say I know how it shoots. I'd expect to be snappier than the P226 due to the lesser weight and shorter barrel. Nah, brah. I can grocery shop in the morning. Pillage, your daughter needs to AVPID putting herself in potentially dangerous situations. Walking her dog alone in a wooded area is NOT SMART.

Hello to our Gun Thread host Weasel and everyone in general.
Missed out on an M&P 10mm this weekend. Went to the gun show Saturday and saw it, decent price with tax and background check fee included (thanks TBI!). I was continuing on to stay overnight at a hotel with valet service, so couldn’t leave it in the car and certainly couldn’t bring it in. Also wasn’t sure if I really wanted to buy it. Skip to today, decided to go for it and stopped at the show on the way back home. The vendor only stayed for Saturday and wasn’t there. Oh well, money stayed in my pocket and they might be at the next one in a couple weeks. Posted by: Arch Stanton at February 04, 2024 08:19 PM (5b1sF) 144

Actually the P229 I shot today felt really solid and had a good sight. I was on target from t he get go. The barrel at 3.9 is just slightly shorter than the Glock so didn't feel any difference there. It seemed to be a pretty well used model. I also shot Blaster's P226 with the new sight and shot better than last time. It was a relief after my last very mediocre outing.

Better drill to practice the flinch-reflex:
It's a dry fire drill (no ammunition), so you can practice off the range as well. Just take your empty gun, hold it upright and place something small and light on the end of the barrel. I ususally will use a brass casing or a coin, but it should be something of a similar size. From there you want to get the gun into your shooting grip while keeping the small object atop the barrel, and then finally execute your trigger pull while keeping the object balanced on the end of the gun. If the object falls off or wobbles significantly, then you are still flinching and need to repeat the drill. Once you are able to perform the drill to where the object placed on the barrel moves as little as possible or not at all, then you have conquered your flinch-reflex! It's a fantastically simple exercise that should yield quick results, but like most practice drills it will serve you better the more often you do it. As moronic as any, I guess. IMO, the Mini 14 is great if you happen to live in a state that bans ARs but not the Mini. That's the real reason they became popular -- and expensive -- in the 90s. I have found the best drill for me on trigger pull is to dry fire my S&W .357 Magnum double action revolver with a dime on the end of the barrel. The trigger pull is pretty heavy and long. It takes a lot of concentration, for me, to get through all seven clicks without losing the dime.
Trigger pull is muscle memory. Do it. I just have to make sure I have the blinds drawn or the neighbors will freak out. So thinking Ruger SP 101 revolver which I loved way back when ? Any suggestions?
A long time ago when I was shopping for a revolver for my wife because she had problems with slides, I was partial to the SP 101 but she liked the slimmer grip of the J frame. Her 442 eventually wound up with the chunky Crimson Trace grip anyway. Can't go wrong either way, IMO. Posted by: Oddbob at February 04, 2024 09:04 PM (sNc8Y) 210

Consider the trigger pull for your candidate revolvers. One reason I like the Colt Python (even the newer models) is that the double action pull is very smooth and consistent. A revolver with a very heavy trigger pull, or one that "stacks" with a progressively heavier trigger pull might still work to shoot, but will degrade your accuracy. Double action is what you'll probably use if you have to use a revolver to defend yourself. Also, see if your choices have a variety of grip sizes for different hand sizes available. Your ability to effectively hold your revolver with a solid grip can make or break your ability to shoot straight. Posted by: Ed L at February 04, 2024 09:05 PM (yRXSd) 211
Thanks OB. I'll file that one in the " I am now just a bit smarter" folder. I live in Washington St so ARs and AKs are considered assault rifles now banned under HB1240. We also have a high cap mag ban. Mags are limited to 10 rounds. I am aware of the accuracy issues of the older models but supposedly design changes to the barrel on the 5800 series has corrected those issues. I have a potential work around on the high cap mag issue and I don't have an issue with buying Ruger mags. Magpul is making noise about manufacturing a mini 14 mag. I waited too long to get something in the .556 platform so my options are limited. That said, I am looking for a ranch gun, not an assault rifle.

182 Ruger Mini 14. Older ones had thin pencil barrels that lost accuracy as they heated up. Newer ones are better. They also have proprietary magazines, so no swapping with ARs.
BUT. They don’t look scary. Posted by: RI Red at February 04, 2024 08:37 PM (cGD0I) ---- I'd love to have a scary looking Mini 14 with the improved barrel. Posted by: Chairman LMAO, AI expert at February 04, 2024 09:05 PM (snyZJ) 213

One of my instructors used to say "DON'T SLAP THE TRIGGER!"
One of my earliest instructors used the verb "click" and likened it to clicking a mouse button. His reasoning is that when you think "squeeze" you subconsciously squeeze with your whole hand, like squeezing a tennis ball. But you don't squeeze a mouse. You hold it with four fingers but you only move one finger to activate it. Posted by: Oddbob at February 04, 2024 09:08 PM (sNc8Y) 215

I might go with a .22 revolver, particularly a Magnum or WMR(?). And spend the time with her making her comfortable and safe with it. Or do the same with the pepper ball gun.
Posted by: GWB at February 04, 2024 07:52 PM Thanks GWB. I do have a Heritage .22 revolver with a 6.5" barrel, for our "teaching gun". Do consider any of the new Colt double action revolvers out on the market right now (Cobra = snubby .38, King Cobra = snubby .357 Magnum, Python = premium .357 Magnum, Anaconda = .44 Magnum). Yes, they are pricier than their competition, but the money goes into two things you can see and feel: the trigger and the finish. Even the low priced Cobra has a better than decent trigger. And the finish on the current generation of Pythons are arguably the best right out of the box of anything on the market today. BTW, I've written up reviews of my experiences shooting the 4.25" and 3" new (post 2020) Pythons here on the Gun Thread. Just search through the archives and you'll see them. Only 007 (and Q) would think of the AR-7 as an anti-personnel weapon. Currently, the USAF is now issuing short barreled M4s to aircrew as the GAU-5A. Note that these are NOT related to the GAU-5As (XM177E1 in US Army) procured by the USAF during Vietnam. This weapon fits inside ejection seats. Also, .38 revolvers mostly disappeared among flight crew after the early 90s. Today, M9s and M11s are used instead, with M18s likely to replace them both if they haven't already. If they are inviting me over for some strenuous activities (jarts, going swimming, etc.) where I might need to unlimber, then I would definitely ask (or state). How to learn to not flinch with handgun. Requires revolver.
Load one or more chambers, but not all. Spin cylinder without looking. Slow fire. Each time you drop the hammer, if it is on an empty chamber, the gun should not move at all. And movement must only be recoil from a round going off. I like doing this with something with stout recoil, not painful but enough to be impressive. Nurse has it nailed. Self defense, IMO, falls under the 80/20 rule. 80% software, 20 % hardware. Martial arts training, PPDs and firearms are great tools to have bit without the appropriate mental attitude accompanying them, they are considerably less effective. Most real world encounters with violence are reactive. Irregardless of what you have in your toolbox, if the mental attitude/training is not there, dealing with a threat while your brain is dealing with an adrenaline dump is considerably more difficult.

They are perfectly comfortable with guns, so that isn't the issue, but what is the polite thing to do?
I've never asked and have never encountered a problem. Granted, most of my friends are pro-2A but it's a personal decision on my part. Selfish? Maybe. Wise? Probably. Posted by: Notorious BFD at February 04, 2024 10:01 PM (V8he0) 280

Love the Colt 1991A1, the Commander version.
But it was a dog right out of the box, very frustrating...not at all like my Kimber .45 (for obvious reasons). Had a military armorer who moonlighted at speed comps work it over. OMG, brass lands in a 2 ft circle and can reliably shoot tennis balls at 30 meters. Smooth shooter! And prayers for sra blaster. Posted by: GEN Jack D.
