Similar to how Slate is gonna die? The Slate "writer" reveals a tiny bit of wokeism:

• you’re now more likely to come upon, say, a bunch of folks asking in the year of our Lord 2024 whether the consistently racist Donald Trump is, in fact, racist

• Loyal Quora users attempted to report bigoted, transphobic, and obscene content without adequate support from the company.

It rained yesterday afternoon and evening -- reports indicate there were some flooded streets, again -- so I was glad not to be out in it. It's 53 F. now with no rain. The streets won't be dry until later today, so washing the car this morning is pointless.

Big black Stirling is a long lump, true, but he's easygoing and good-natured. They both are, fortunately. The little one even loves belly rubs; you start petting her and she rolls on her side and then her back. Not many cats go for that.

"So I went downstairs and cleared my head with coffee and cigarettes,
And when it hit me right there, then my mind was set!

Well, I phoned work and told 'em they're going to be a man short today --
I got the sunny day blues; there's only one thing that's gonna make them go away.
So I went out and I climbed into my big ol' Chevrolet,
And with a turn of the key and a cloud of dust, I was on my way --!"

Same as always. They are against him. They cannot just say he is evil, so the best thing they can say is he is racist (remember they do not just want to call him evil, they want to make him toxic to others, so racist- that is the true difference between their use of the two words.)

Racism is not just a rhetorical trump card, but also supposed to be a rhetorical quarantine. And honestly it works. How much digital ink have we spilled over the past 10 years defending the charge (or 30 over it being used against others?) It forces you to argue the charge and short circuits actual debate.

Speaking of security, the other day I got to looking at firewall logs on my routers and saw something. I run a little "site to site" VPN using OpenVPN between the house here and my mother's. Let's me got on her network and computer and fix stuff and so forth.

Well, I discovered that server was bit hit 3 or 4 times a day with those random port scans. Some bot discovered there a live VPN connection going and tried to connect.

It was rejected every time, thankfully.

What blew my mind was I had set up the VPN to go only over IPv6, not IP4. Yet, there were IP4 addresses attacking the server.

What gives? Well, I hadn't told the firewall not to allow IP4 connections, so it was just using the ::ffff.0.0.0.0/96 Ip4 to Ipv6 mapping addresses. This was the purpose of that, allow IP4 hosts to connect to IPv6 listeners.

So, I turned that off. No more VPN attack attempts.

81 The Slate writer’s entire output is pieces defending dot Indians in tech. They are also a dot Indian. I think the racism they attribute to Trump is coming from inside the house.

82 80 >>69 Serious question: A friend has sent me a link to a "caringbridge" website that details his struggles with cancer. I don't have the google/whatever account so it asks for my email address. Would this get me spammed?

83 Whenever Pixy posts something like the Pipkin rabbit thing I click over and read and try to get it, but I just don't. I must be missing something about the whole manga (?) thing, some basic knowledge. The art is weird and very duplicative to my eyes and what they talk about incomprehensible to me. I'm not unfamiliar with fantasy/scifi, being a consumer of novels mostly, to the present. But I just don't get that stuff.

84 I'm surprised that this infinite crafter isn't by the guy that made cookie clicker. He had similar projects but nothing exactly the same.

85 The slate article states that quora died because orangemanbad. ACHUALLY, it died because it was another outfit flooding search results and leading you to paywall/loginwall/cookiewall. Expert sex change, super user, etc.. will all eventually die for the same reason.

86 I know a bunch of aerospace engineers, younger ones, that have left to go into ML model startups and the like. The same thing happened during the dotcom boom with people leaving into CS degree related fields. But a whole lot eventually come back. It ain't exciting, sometimes very monotonous, it's full of a bunch of crusty old farts like me, but if you stay out of commercial aerospace pays well enough and consistently.
