Just visited Barnstable a week or so ago. And subsequently learned that actor Neal McDonough (Band of Brothers, Justified, The Shift) grew up there. He was on a recent episode of Mike Rowe's podcast - I highly recommend his podcast and that episode in particular.

56 CBD, Thanks for picking today's painting. Copley was an extraordinary portraitist with his ability to capture the model's expression and the almost glowing skin tones. It gives his paintings a realism that is very attractive. Combine that with the realism of their clothing and the effect is multiplied. In this case, the viewer is left with a sense of a comfortable, content older lady who has probably enjoyed being a mother and grandmother. It is attractive and pleasant.

Reminds me of a line from my favorite Heyer book where the female lead wished everyone she met at the hoity toity parties she and her husband attended were as nice as Lady Adversane and as homely. Nice to see that all portraits are not of stunningly beautiful women and reflect a larger swath of the population.

Definitely nightmare fuel if you are anticipating traveling by lifeboat. The shark is disturbingly scary. One question: Why is "Watson" naked, while all the other lieboat survivors are clothed?

It's hilarious, and I think it's obvious scrambling by the Academy. They're trying to put down the DEI blowback and the "pale and male is stale" kerfuffle, etc. by deliberating slighting one of the biggest grrrrrl power names in Hollywood, and trying (again - it happens in a cycle) to claim they're not a bunch of disconnected ivory tower types by nominating a popular movie and its actors instead of some arthouse piece nobody saw.

And another factor - and perhaps the major factor, but I'm not sure - is that they're doubtlessly trying to gin up ratings for the big show. The Oscars have been collapsing in terms of viewership, and a touch of controversy probably just what the ~~doctor~~ advertisers ordered.

Barbie's tremendous success with it's woke-ass message is going to cause a lot of malinvestment and may end up being a net positive. Hollywood is going to take the wrong message from Barbie's stupendous success. It is not going to learn the right lesson - that a movie that meets expectations, is marketed carefully to a subset of the total audience and doesn't try to be all things to all men, looks right, sounds right, is cast well with charismatic and reasonably talented actors, doesn't shit on its own sources, etc. - but will rather learn the easier but wrong lesson that they desperately want to be true: the problem wasn't being woke, it was being not woke enough.

JJ Abrams' "Hot Wheels" movie and Lena Dunham's (yes, quit laughing) "Polly Pocket" movie will be pretty likely to collapse and hoover tons of cash out of Universal and Mattel. As for "Barbie" sequels? Who knows. There's a lot of momentum there. It might keep them above water.

I made the acquaintance of such devices when I visited Tucson in '85 and then lived in Denver from '97 to '01. Dampish and sticky is a good way to describe the effect, even in a dry climate. (They wouldn't work in humid conditions.) And it gets the inside only about 15-20 degrees lower than the outside. If it's 100 F. outdoors, I want my place to be way cooler than 80-85.

To think of their normal climate as some kind of "reversal" is to betray your cloistered, narrow and self-centered perceptions of normality. we went to see "Argyle" yesterday.

The theater wasn't filled *ahem*, so it was easy to see the folks who really enjoyed the movie. No one brought their cats so I'm assuming "cat-ladies" cuz of their laughter at all of the cat humor parts. Also, at all the Extreme!!!!11111!!!! Mary Sue moments.

I didn't hate the movie, exactly. The multiple reveals that the critic complain about. They more or less lead into one another within the "logic" of the movie.

However, I'm convinced that "Argyle" was originally written as a musical comedy wherein they decided to leave the song out and more or less left in the crazy dance numbers.

somewhere in the last 1/3 to 1/4 of the movie your suspension of believe, which is already strained, will shatter as five foot nuthin' and 40 lbs heavier Bryce Dallas Howard becomes (MINOR SPOILER) the ass-kickling Mary Sue of all Time,

and in the silliest way possible.

Matthew Vaugh apparently wanted hi9s movie to be a frothy, silly, dancing spy spoof without preparing us as an audience at all for this. You will check out of this movie hard (cont)

Swamp coolers work very well in the desert. The low humidity combined with the day/night temperature differential makes them damn near ideal from an energy-for-efficacy standpoint.

Turn on your swamp cooler midday and let it chill the house while raising humidity. As the humidity rises to the point that the swamp cooler becomes ineffective, the sun is going down. Turn it off and open the windows. The air exchanges during the cool overnight period, lowering humidity back down. Close up the place in the morning before it starts getting hot out, let the temperature inside rise more slowly than outside, and then repeat the cycle.

As long as you keep the system clean, it will work brilliantly and not be musty or nasty - but only if you happen to live in the desert. If you have humidity, forget it. Mechanical refrigeration for the win.

The stills on IMDb make Argylle look like a fun romp of a spy movie. Henry "Napoleon Solo" Cavill being in it automatically makes me think of Man From U.N.C.L.E.. Each episode of that show featured an Innocent character, someone not involved in the spy world. I have no idea.

The basic premise is that the heroine is a writer of spy novels with a hero named Argyle.

Somehow she the plots she writes reflects real world events before they happen/are revealed. So, the world spy organizations are after her to write the next part of her spy novel so they can figure out what to do about the Macguffin.

I hope that helps.

You may like it, but you do have to buy into a lot esp in the last 1/3 or so.

Stay for the after credit scene for extra WTF!

However, Sargent's portraits of his friends are warm, beautifully rendered, and full of life: you almost expect them to start talking to you.
