Sylvanus Bourne was found floating in the Charles River. No ID, no sense of who she was or how she got there. But she knows that the guy at the bar can handle himself, that the horse furthest from the front door is the easiest to steal, and that she can run -- flat out -- for half a mile in that petticoat and silk get-up before getting winded.
Now tell, me: How can she know all that and not know her own nam?" Posted by: red speck at February 05, 2024 09:41 AM (0Id0S) 44

CBD, Thanks for picking today's painting. Copley was an extraordinary portraitist with his ability to capture the model's expression and the almost glowing skin tones. It gives his paintings a realism that is very attractive. Combine that with the realism of their clothing and the effect is multiplied. In this case, the viewer is left with a sense of a comfortable, content older lady who has probably enjoyed being a mother and grandmother. It is attractive and pleasant.

Reminds me of a line from my favorite Heyer book where the female lead wished everyone she met at the hoity toity parties she and her husband attended were as nice as Lady Adversane and as homely. Nice to see that all portraits are not of stunningly beautiful women and reflect a larger swath of the population.

Copley's fame was established in England by the exhibition, in 1766,[16] of A Boy with a Flying Squirrel, which depicted his half-brother, Henry Pelham, seated at a table and playing with a pet squirrel. This picture, which made the young Boston painter a Fellow of the Society of Artists of Great Britain, by vote of September 3, 1766, had been painted the preceding year.

Google will no longer be keeping a backup of the entire Internet. Google Search's "cached" links have long been an alternative way to load a website that was down or had changed, but now the company is killing them off. Google "Search Liaison" Danny Sullivan confirmed the feature removal in an X post, saying the feature "was meant for helping people access pages when way back, you often couldn't depend on a page loading. These days, things have greatly improved. So, it was decided to retire it."

Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at February 05, 2024 10:19 AM (7fElN) ++++ Barbie's tremendous success with it's woke-ass message is going to cause a lot of malinvestment and may end up being a net positive. Hollywood is going to take the wrong message from Barbie's stupendous success. It is not going to learn the right lesson - that a movie that meets expectations, is marketed carefully to a subset of the total audience and doesn't try to be all things to all men, looks right, sounds right, is cast well with charismatic and reasonably talented actors, doesn't shit on its own sources, etc. - but will rather learn the easier but wrong lesson that they desperately want to be true: the problem wasn't being woke, it was being not woke enough. JJ Abrams' "Hot Wheels" movie and Lena Dunham's (yes, quit laughing) "Polly Pocket" movie will be pretty likely to collapse and hoover tons of cash out of Universal and Mattel. As for "Barbie" sequels? Who knows. There's a lot of momentum there. It might keep them above water. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at February 05, 2024 10:24 AM (yjAVs) 202

I used to live right around the corner from Copley Square in Boston. The square was named for him and at the time it was the hub of art and architecture in the city. The Boston Public Library sits at one end of the square and it is a really beautiful piece of architecture and houses some famous paintings most notably from John Singer Sargent. Posted by: Bulgaroctonus at February 05, 2024 10:27 AM (9yWhg) ++++ This boreacentric attitude is serious problem when it comes to empathy for and relations with the Global South. In Australia and in other places in the Global South, the seasons are absolutely not "reversed." To think of their normal climate as some kind of "reversal" is to betray your cloistered, narrow and self-centered perceptions of normality. The so-called "inversion" of seasons is nothing of the sort. It is simply normal. Considering seasonal reality in the Global South as "reversed" is to engage in the Othering of those who live, work, play and love south of the equator. You need to check your preconceptions and prejudices - and your boreaprivilege - at the door. Your chauvinism and jingoism does nothing but betray your own ignorance and provincial attitude while demeaning and Othering your fellow humans, reducing them to second-class status because of your own blindered outlook. It's looking more and more like the jobs report late last week is pure unmitigated bunk.
... Barone wrote, "The workweek, itself, contracted to 34.1 hours from 34.3 in December and 34.4 in November. This is the lowest number since March 2020 (the pandemic) and, before that, November 2008 (Great Recession)." "Rosenberg Research calculated that, despite the job gains, total hours worked actually contracted." [Emphasis added.] In fact, the Household Survey — "the one the media ignores," as Barone put it — "showed up with a -31K headline jobs number, and a fall of -63K in full-time jobs." Worse, the labor participation rate remains down. Americans are working more part-time jobs because there are fewer full-time jobs to go around — a sizable fraction of last month's jobs went to people taking on a second or third job. The multiple reveals that the critic complain about. They more or less lead into one another within the "logic" of the movie. However, I'm convinced that "Argyle" was originally written as a musical comedy wherein they decided to leave the song out and more or less left in the crazy dance numbers. somewhere in the last 1/3 to 1/4 of the movie your suspension of believe, which is already strained, will shatter as five foot nuthin' and 40 lbs heavier Bryce Dallas Howard becomes (MINOR SPOILER) the ass-kickling Mary Sue of all Time, and in the silliest way possible. Swamp coolers is what most American desert people use. Its very clammy and dank.
Posted by: Pudinhead at February 05, 2024 10:35 AM (Jb8+d) ++++ Swamp coolers work very well in the desert. The low humidity combined with the day/night temperature differential makes them damn near ideal from an energy-for-efficacy standpoint. Turn on your swamp cooler midday and let it chill the house while raising humidity. As the humidity rises to the point that the swamp cooler becomes ineffective, the sun is going down. Turn it off and open the windows. The air exchanges during the cool overnight period, lowering humidity back down. Close up the place in the morning before it starts getting hot out, let the temperature inside rise more slowly than outside, and then repeat the cycle. As long as you keep the system clean, it will work brilliantly and not be musty or nasty - but only if you happen to live in the desert. If you have humidity, forget it. Unless you're a 40 and above fat cat-lady then you are going to have the time of your life.
To be fair, all of the action scenes, etc are really well-directed as scenes but as a movie it's a dud. And they definitely should've found someone other than Bryce Dallas Howard as the heroine. Yes, she looks very much like a typical lady writer, but as THE hero she looks like she'd run out of breath in the walk from her car to the donut shop. . . . Is it a remake of The Argyle Secrets? Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr. at February 05, 2024 10:57 AM (63Dwl) I have no idea. The basic premise is that the heroine is a writer of spy novels with a hero named Argyle. Somehow she the plots she writes reflects real world events before they happen/are revealed. So, the world spy organizations are after her to write the next part of her spy novel so they can figure out what to do about the Macguffin. I hope that helps. You may like it, but you do have to buy into a lot esp in the last 1/3 or so. Stay for the after credit scene for extra WTF! Posted by: naturalfake at February 05, 2024 11:06 AM (nFnyb) 330

Copley was good, but Sargent was the best. Yes, he did a lot of society portraits, but even those have some interesting tweaks that subtly show how much he disliked the sitters. However, Sargent's portraits of his friends are warm, beautifully rendered, and full of life: you almost expect them to start talking to you.
