Tongue Nor Heart Cannot Conceive Nor Name ONT

Hello, and welcome to the Groundhog Day ONT! I know a lot of you swear by Punxsutawney Phil, but I prefer to watch the ceremony from France. This morning Parisian Pierre emerged from his home, turned around and saw his own Château. In any event, pull up a chair, and make yourself at home. Anyone want a drink?

5 When we started watching Groundhog Day tonight, I thought, I know every line, every frame of this movie, do I really want to watch this again?

But I got into it. Phil Connor's spiritual struggle and character development is so well done.

One thing about Bill Murray is that you usually feel like you're watching that zany or snarky guy from Scrooged, Ghostbusters, or What About Bob. Tonight I was most impressed when Phil was telling Rita how much he valued the day they'd had together, ending with his profession of love. Murray really did serious, sincere well. Almost like he wasn't Murray for that moment.

It's like watching Harpo's clownish face vanish when he sits down at the harp. I think that was the best new thing I got out of the movie this time.

40 The vampire pig could not enter because the homeowner did not invite him in. A warrant is not an invitation to enter one's home, it is a usually shakily (and often fraudulently) based writ of fiat authority rationalizing the use of force to enter your house (or somebody else's but they're at your house because they're innumerate and reckless) and exercise their "authori-tie."

But no invite means no entrance for the vampire.

Most of the collection went to the university, but he was allowed to donate some to the local science museum in my town.

We would take a class field trip there every other year in grade school. I would always tell everyone on the bus that I had an actual display at the museum ... to a great amount of skepticism.

They were always gobsmacked to see the fossils (they are very cool), and then to see the name Pillage Idiot right there on the display card!

BUT LOVE

When you see it you'll laugh. Thank goodness it wasn't two guys.

I've seen a couple of shows like this, and not recently either. It's definitely a thing.

Is it an R rated show? If so, the part where the A-Man and his crew get totally ripshit drunk and he shanks a fool should be quality entertainment.

(as opposed to the scenes where our boi is hammered but doesn't kill a companion, which is every scene if they're being historically accurate)

I wish there was something to update, but it is stuck in neutral.

I am limited in what I can discuss in open forum, but I find it astonishing that the local sheriff has not even bothered to set foot on the site where the cadaver dogs went nuts, while he is waiting for the lead member of the volunteer search team dithers over when to take the next steps (GPR was supposed to happen back inn November) Sheriff hasn't even taken a look around. We are looking at other options, but so far no luck.

An unsolved missing persons case. A very strong cadaver dog response. Not one member of the sheriff's office has set foot on scene.

Sure, we are aware of that. If you looked at the data I am referring to you would conclude that a GPR search is not really needed. What is needed is someone to put shovel in dirt in an area about 3 meters by 1 meter. An analogy - EOD does not dig. If it's exposed they will deal with it. If called to 'clear' a site they look around, if they see nothing it is cleared.
Seen where EOD got called three times to the same residential yard. Former WWII military site. Homeowners were putting in a clothes line. Two posts. Found something within the first posthole. EOD "cleared" it. Second posthole found... rinse.. repeat.

GPR is accually 'affordable'... ~$1000.

Back nearly fifty years ago, Colorado School of Mines and the University of Denver were members of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, along with Michigan Tech, University of North Dakota, University of Minnesota, University of Minnesota-Duluth, University of Wisconsin, Notre Dame, University of Michigan, and Michigan State.

Those were some heady times for Tech, and we got to see and play hockey with some real powerhouse teams. And we ourselves were a powerhouse -- three consecutive trips to the NCAA Frozen Four, runner-up twice and champion once. The program has not been up to that high water mark since then.

Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM) at February 03, 2024 12:26 AM (xG4kz)

320 Muldoon's situation is complicated by the fact that Every. Single. Thing. Done.

MUST adhere to Rules of Forensic Accuracy, Rules of (legally admissible) Evidence, Chain of Custody and Verification by Documented and Legally (court recognized) EXPERTS in their respective fields.

Kind of rules out a great many, well meaning, "well, just dive in!" approaches.

The PURPOSE of the search, is not just to "find" the victim.

But in the doing, also drive forward as to CONVICT, the killer.

And THAT is where and why EVERY "i" must be properly dotted as every "t" must be crossed.

A single mis-step can derail the entire case.

Just felt an earthquake - first time in the new house. Bed shook - thought dog had jumped on it. 11:25pm cdt. USGS says 5.1 mag near Prague, Oklahoma, about 100mi South. That's what it felt like.

For the record. G'nite again.

334 You know, I am leaning to the notion of doing my own millwork to make a set of top cupboards for the kitchen here. I have enough oak planks to make the door frames for 4 large cabinet doors and 4 small one for over the range. I have enough fauxk plywood for the exposed sides of the cabinets, too. And I can probably buy "golden oak" prefinished paneling at a local lumber yard.

I have a router, and table saw, and bandsaw. And a miter saw. I can do this.

Related question - could a vampire (cop or otherwise) board public transport? What about facilities where there's a push or pull to enter sign? Surely that's an implied invitation? For that matter, if you consider yourself a law-abiding citizen and whole-heartedly embrace the Constitution, is there (in the sense of a social compact) enough implied consent that Officer Dracula wouldn't need more than the warrant to get in?

I probably need to go back and watch Forever Knight on that one - they probably touched on the matter somewhere.

375 Vampire permission to enter must be granted by the actual resident/owner/occupant of the structure; that is the rule/conceit I came up with for my vampire (in 2 books that will not be on the book site!). A note from the cops won't do it even if the vampire themselves is police.
So, even if a guest or non-resident visitor says 'come on in', that is insufficient.
Otherwise, the vampire could just send some hobo to break into the house, then invite them inside. So it has to be explicit permission to enter from the actual occupant.
This rule does not apply to public/commercial structures, like stores, shopping malls, public service buildings, even churches, etc.

Posted by: Toronto May Be Fictional'

My vampire routinely crashes in empty, for-sale houses. The rule there is the owners are no longer primary residents but are living elsewhere and the structure is therefore fair game. Vacation homes are also fair game as unless the owner is actually in it, they are not the primary resident. However if there is a caretaker residence, that is off limits without an invitation. Of course there are judgement calls but I don't go out of my way to explore them really.

Well in IL we have Cayro, VI-enna and Grandy Tour.

I live a few miles south of Grand Detour, my ancestors settled near there ca.1841. It was actually named by the French when controlled the area, after a great turn in the Rock River, while heading south it reverses course , heads north, then again south.

Posted by: Farmer at February 03, 2024 03:55 AM (55Qr6)

379 A rule I totally invented is that my vampire can enter a private residence without an invitation, but only if the occupant is not there, and if the occupant returns must leave immediately and if re-entry is desired must ask permission. My vampire also sticks to their word: if an occupant hesitates to allow them entry, knowing they're a vampire, they pledge not to harm anyone inside, and never does.
IDK, I view mine not so much as some Undead Evil but as a kind of apex predator that has occurred more or less naturally for a very long time. I indulge in several discussions in the books about what they are, as the vampires themselves don't really seem to know!
They're just... there.

381 One of my vampire characters is so old he's not even a true modern Homo Sapiens, but more of a hybrid species, and calls himself 'Perun' as there is nobody else left who knows anything about his origins.
The conceit is from actual primate studies: a giveaway for 'hybrids' is unusual, exaggerated, or crooked teeth! When primate subspecies interbreed it causes aberrations in tooth distribution and arrangement. So my idea for vampires is that as humanoid species interbred eons past, it led to a highly unusual and rare hybrid that isn't common but is persistent. And doesn't reproduce in the usual mammalian way.

384 Concerning Florist Friars - For the record!

A friar was in his garden & found that his rose bush had cross-bred with his Venus fly trap plant, producing a carnivorous offspring. After tending to the strange hybrid for a year, it grew large enough that it had begun eating local stray cats & dogs. Finally, one day, one of the local children wandered into the garden & was eaten. The locals tried to convince the friars to uproot the plant & kill it, but the friars said it was a unique gift from God, and refused.

So the locals took their problem to the strongest man in town, Hugh the Blacksmith. Taking up his hammer, Hugh went to the garden & pounded the plant into a pulp, and then ran the friars out of town, too - problem solved!

The moral of this story?

"Hugh - and ONLY Hugh - can prevent florist friars!"
