This is probably the first Bouguereau I've seen that I kinda like. It looks like Adam was holding Abel's body in a pieta-like pose, but let him go to comfort Eve better.
I like that you can see the altar in the back left -- the catalyst for Cain's crime. The sacrifice is still burning. Something that should be about worship and holiness was turned evil. Storm clouds gather. Abel's murder was the consequences of his parents' actions, and it'll only get worse from here. Maybe the storm clouds also foreshadow the Flood too? Gen 4 NIV:
4 ...The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast. 6 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” AFAIK, it is not explained why the Lord judged Cain's offering as not "right." We have to accept His judgement in all things, whether we understand them or not. Posted by: gp Decays To Plage at February 02, 2024 09:42 AM (MvF+J) 80

My client is innocent. There was no law or commandment against murder at the time of Abel's death. The Sixth Commandment wasn't delivered to Moses until much later. God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." Nothing about dominion over each other or protecting one's brother, thus Cain's legitimate query "Am I my brother's keeper?" because God never told him about that commandment.

The power and pain he shows in this painting is off the scale. The dark, ominous sky, the posture of Adam as he clutches his heart even while trying to console Eve, her collapse in despair, the subtle variations in skin tones of the three figures, the smooth skin and clean musculature of Abel emphasizes his youth and innocence. More than the biblical reference, this could apply to anyone who had lost young loved ones. (Bouguereau lost his own young wife and child to tuberculosis.) A final element that makes this so effective is Bouguereau avoids exaggeration so the image could apply to anyone who has experienced loss.

Cain's sin was in refusing to accept that he was wrong and blaming others, and instead of retrospection, he got jealous, angry and murdered his brother.

106 My client is innocent.

Posted by: pookysgirl, amateur art critic at February 02, 2024 09:46 AM (dtlDP) It's a Classical trope. You can see it in ancient Greek painting. Men worked outside and tanned, so they are depicted as darker-skinned. Women were inside the home, no tan, lighter skin. It became one of the motifs of classicism. Abel may also be light-skinned to show his youth and innocence. Posted by: Kris at February 02, 2024 09:54 AM (OyyDO) 152

http://tinyurl.com/4cdjmkpk The C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, a network of about 100 global mayors . . .is partnering with alternative asset manager Nordic Real Estate Partners (NREP) to bring one of the buzziest concepts in urban planning — the “15-minute city” — to life in a handful of locations globally.
The idea is to make urban areas less dependent on cars as part of the fight against climate change. The 15-minute city framework emphasizes bringing the essentials of daily life — work, entertainment, schools and green space — within a short walk or bicycle ride from home, reducing vehicle use and dramatically cutting carbon and pollution emissions. The initiative will focus on two types of neighborhoods: new ones cropping up and existing ones that need revamping. NREP has pledged an initial commitment of $500,000 to the plan over the course of two years. The Copenhagen-based firm oversees 18 billion euros ($17.7 billion) in assets under management. Some suck-up journalist was just talking about it, mostly very respectful but couldn't help throwing in some BS about Biden, whose son served in Iraq, also knows loss. 393 .22 Hornet for the win.
Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo ------- You want the K-Hornet if you reload. The .22 Hornet is not one of the better cartridges to reload as it is quite picky--the long neck and tapered shoulders make it so. Simply reaming the chamber with a K-Hornet reamer gets you better case life and 100-150 more fps. Simply firing .22 Hornet brass in a K-Hornet chamber will fireform the brass for future reloading. There are at least two different specification sets of the K-Hornet so if you go to reamers 4 rent dot com or a similar place to rent the chamber reamer, make sure you get what you want. The 22 WMR is another option and a bit cheaper to fire. 22 Hornet ammo is a bit pricey and can be hard to locate at times. Posted by: whig at February 02, 2024 11:02 AM (ZcPYF) 419
