Crazy Pills meme.jpg

Memebeth? The above is what happens when pop culture meets the classics. The meme is a popular reaction meme from the movie Zoolander Will Ferrell is saying “I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!”. I was discussing quotes from Macbeth earlier today, and that popped into my head. It's the same meme, just...Shakespeareized.

Newspapers Die In Darkness

Media meltdown: Why journalism is battered and bleeding

"No matter how many heroic nonprofit newsrooms like the Baltimore Banner and Daily Memphian take root, no matter how many Substack-like newsletters blossom or creators emerge to drop their videos on YouTube, you can’t deny the journalism business’ decline," Shafer writes.

What’s remarkable to me is how many of these pieces, and there have been many, overlook the importance of political bias. Republicans have been complaining about a liberal tilt since I began to read newspapers. Now, in the Trump era, half the country believes the media have become the opposition party, determined to block their man from returning to the White House. But during the Biden presidency, a growing percentage of those on the left have lost trust in the business as well.

You have Red and Blue America, each filled with anger, each side viewing the other as evil and dangerous, with the press having forfeited its standing as a neutral arbiter of facts.

Turns out people don't like it when the MSM pisses in their face and tells them it's raining. Who woulda thought?

Brooklyn Man's Gun Hobby Leads to a SWAT Raid and a Harrowing Legal Fight for His Freedom

“I found out that you can actually legally buy a receiver and you can machine that receiver to completion, and you buy your parts and you put them together and you've got a pistol or a rifle. And once I saw that I was hooked. I was like, ‘This is the coolest thing ever. This is the most cool thing you could possibly do in your machine shop.’”

Years after Taylor began his new hobby, the ATF and New York City Police Department (NYPD) showed up at his home to arrest him. “A joint SWAT ATF task force raided my house, broke down my door,” he said.

The officers arrested Taylor, who spent one week in jail on Rikers Island.
On April 22, 2022, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced the indictment of Dexter Taylor for purchasing “$10,000 worth of gun parts online to build illegal, untraceable firearms known as ghost guns.”

There is no mention in the story of Taylor attempting to sell any guns. Absent that, nobody should have a beef with him.

Valentine's Day Tip

Baltimore is the most romantic city in America, Eventbrite says

Baltimore is the most romantic city in the U.S., according to Eventbrite.
That's right! The event management and ticketing company ranked Charm City over Chicago, Austin, and Denver — all based on the number of events being held on or around Valentine's Day.

The listings currently posted on Eventbrite show there are tons of things to do in Baltimore on Feb. 14, like a TwerkFit class, a pizza-making lesson for lovers, and lots of speed dating.

Washington D.C. also made the list as the fourth most romantic city. Thankfully, the team at Eventbrite curated a selection of unique date ideas and events in the District and shared them on their blog.

Our plans for tonight? Oh, dinner and a carjacking. Look, I lived there for 50 years, and consider it my hometown, but the city's unofficial mascot is a rat, for heaven's sake

On Medieval Staircases

We talked about this a while back when I posted a picture of two knights fighting on the stairs.

Fighting on Spiral Staircases

The story goes that all spiral* staircases in castles turn clockwise so that primarily right-handed defenders, fighting downwards, would have an advantage over attackers whose weapon would be impeded by the newel post. It is a particular favourite of tour guides, appears in castle guidebooks (Hodgson & Wise 2015, 46) and interpretation panels (for example at Arundel Castle, West Sussex), has been included in many popular texts (Mortimer 2009, 160), gets incorporated into television documentaries, is widely present in internet articles and is liberally recited by members of online discussion forums.

Of all the stories connected to mediaeval buildings this is perhaps the one that has been the most resilient. Unlike many other mediaeval tales that I have researched there does not seem to be a shred of truth behind it. For some folk this can be quite a controversial opinion. Attempting to gently puncture the swordsman theory of spiral staircases gets a lot of pushback online. One reason for this might be the frequency of its repetition by parents to children. Whilst working at or visiting castles I inevitably hear a dad proudly imparting this knowledge to his little boy (and it usually is boys’ talk) and it may be that this familial link creates a strong bond between the myth and its proponents.

Much more at the link.

More Federal Overreach

They Are Trying to Ban Ham Radio

The proposal, which comes as part of a government drive for spectrum efficiency, would see ham operators forced off their frequencies between 420 and 450 MHz to make way for “public safety”.

Many ham radio operators are also preppers and survivalists, who can use ham radios for communication when all other means of communication go down (i.e., in case of a natural disaster). So it’s within the public interest to keep ham radio available, for safety and peace of mind.

The official story regarding the proposal is about ham radio interference, but many people believe the reality is that ham operators are a threat to government officials because of their ability to communicate without being monitored.

The FCC has been asking for public input on their proposal and so far the response from Americans has been overwhelmingly against this “ham-ban”

Hmmm. Everything in the State, nothing outside the State, nothing against the State. There's a term for that that the left likes to throw around carelessly. It's on the tip of my tongue...

Whites Need Not Apply

White men no longer want to fight for a nation that scorns them

Let me begin by making this point as clearly as possible. There is absolutely nothing worse for the combat effectiveness of a military, than attempting to use recruiting as a social engineering program.

It was reported in this newspaper recently how the US Army has seen a dramatic fall in the number of white recruits, as the Military.com website found that the army fell 10,000 short of its 65,000 enlistment target.

Underpinning this drop was a dramatic decrease in white recruits from 44,042 in 2018, to just 25,070 in 2023, leading to the proportion of white recruits falling from 56.4 per cent of all recruits in 2018, to just 44 per cent. According to the US Census from 2022, around 59 per cent of all US citizens were from white backgrounds. The US military is 17 per cent women, so the recruiting crisis is primarily one among white men.

Clearly, something inside the US Army’s recruitment system is failing, both in terms of targets being drastically missed, and a failure to recruit effectively among the nation’s largest ethnic group.

I know more than a few vets who proudly served, many who come from families that have served for generations, who are advising their kids not to enlist.

34 The ham radio article is downright dumb. Even if the Feds took away our 70cm privileges (and I'm not endorsing that), that's only a fraction of the spectrum allocated to amateur radio users. And to say that hams can communicate without being monitored is just sheer ignorance. You can't transmit encrypted data on the ham bands. The recent disillusionment on the value of a college education, especially among white males, probably plays a role in lack of interest. Why worry about the means to pay for college when you have no interest in attending. (They might want to emphasize that the GI Bill also covers costs for tech and trade schools more.)
The expectation of student loans forgiveness also devalues the GI Bill.

127 My thought as to why newspapers, and journalism generally has collapsed; it began when the net began draining away all the ad revenue, especially classified ads. Most people have forgotten how huge a section of every local paper was taken up by those! But as they dried up, revenue dried up, and papers quit making money, and consequently, all the people interested in making money found other things to do.
That was the point at which most business would radically restructure, or just fail, but that didn't happen to papers, because in came the rich idealogues! These were people who had a lot of money and loved the idea of owning their own paper, just for the "prestige", and so of course they quickly turned what they owned into a mouthpiece for their own politics. Who cares if this was what people wanted? They didn't, this was all for ego stroking.

and all those papers that *weren't* bought by Oligarchs became cookie cutter copies in the Gannett universe, in which all creativity and spark was completely erased. Result - this a zombified husk of an industry, shambling towards a long overdue grave.

If you are going to use the military as play for a college degree or to gain expertise in something you can use when you get out, I suppose that could be rational.

But what are you actually fighting for in today's military?

The Junta just sanctioned Texas by shutting down natural gas distribution, this is going to aid Russia and The CCP as they are providers of NATGas, and since we won't be supplying Europe now, Europe is going to look elsewhere.

So we just emboldened and rewarded enemies our so-called military is supposed to be "protecting" and or preparing to fight.

I happened to be in Hong Kong many years ago. I was walking around Stanley one Saturday and saw an Orthdox-looking jew smoking. I said "Shabbat Shalom!", and he mumbled back "shabbat shalom", put his cigarette on the ground, put it out, and walked away.
Only later did I learn that observant Jews are NOT supposed to light a fire on Shabbat...I wonder what the guy thought when I greeted him. LOL

Your effectiveness and morale sinks further after several of your brothers and sisters in arms are killed in attacks by the same enemy and your C-in-C delays any reprisal and suppression attacks for 4 days and counting.

Yes, but it is not in my Spotify playlist.

That song is a good example. Play it 3 times for a room full of 5-year-olds and they will then run around on the playground singing the chorus.

Play some Drake song that hit #1 on the charts for several weeks and most adults could not whistle, hum, or sing the chorus 15 minutes later.

Bill worked in a pickle factory. He had been employed there
for a number of years when he came home one day to confess
to his wife that he had a terrible compulsion. He had an
urge to stick his penis into the pickle slicer. His wife
suggested that he should see a sex therapist to talk about
it, but Bill indicated that he'd be too embarrassed. He
vowed to overcome the compulsion on his own. One day a few
weeks later, Bill came home absolutely ashen. His wife
could see at once that something was seriously wrong.
"What's wrong, Bill?" she asked. "Do you remember that I
told you how I had this tremendous urge to put my penis
into the pickle slicer?" "Oh, Bill, you didn't." "Yes, I
did." "My God, Bill, what happened?" "I got fired." "No,
Bill. I mean, what happened with the pickle slicer?"
"Oh...she got fired too."

263 Ive written previously about recruiting. The military has tracked the statistics for decades. They know down to the zip code how many people will usually join and by service in any given month. Recruiting sells the military emphasizing the main reasons people join.
These are: for fun/excitement, for a paycheck, for education benefits, for patriotism, for training, for travel, and for a career. These seven reasons cover 99% of the reasons people claim as a reason for enlisting.
One only has to look at what is going on today to see why recruiting is failing. Many of these inducements no longer apply to the typical high school graduate. Compound this with a shrinking pool of high school seniors who can qualify either physically or mentally, and you can see the problem.
It's not going to get better any time soon.

Both the Pinto and the Vega were made in wagon versions. Would be relatively simple to turn either into a small pickup truck.

And then make into a "Technical". I'm thinking, robust enough for a twin-mount, hand-cranked pair of Ruger 10/22s ?

The Pinto might be a big seller in the mid-east. It'll blow itself up!

Kidding aside. There is no Palestinian language. They speak straight up Arabic. Cultures and Customs, IDENTICAL to other Arab tribes.

NO "Palestinian" history, outside of their Jordanian, Syrian, and a bit of Nomadic Arab tales.

They were living in historic Jewish lands, when in 1948, Jordan and Syria told 'em to flee "Israel", go to "refugee camps" in Gaza, which became cities. And armed hospitals and schools. And tunnels.

From 1948 to today, "Palestinians" have been living in Gaza, UNWANTED by Jordan, Syria, Egypt, and EVERY OTHER Arab Country in the mid-east.

They SEETHE with resentment, and don't even know the actual cause is their fucking-over by their fellow Arabs. The JEWS offered them State and Succor, if they had remained in Israel, back then.

Do you think this may be minority math or is it Common Core Math? Also if there can only be one answer then it is an absolute answer right ...... but woke says 'no absolutes'.

377 Jim, when I was growing up, every once in a while Dad would go to Kemah (which was close to our town) and buy shrimp straight off of the shrimp boats to bring home to fry up for dinner - so good!

You know the Apollo 13 return and re-entry path was calculated by the blackwomen at Mission Control, and not the scientifically guesstimated Hail Mary, optical sighted, button-pressed when emerging from the Dark Side of the Moon by the Apollo Crew, themselves?

So, which was it. Did the Command Module/LEM combo steer course 42? Or, was it 1?

Teresa. Don't bother any more with Tookies. Or T Bone Toms.

I was underwhelmed in 1999. And 2000. And 2001.

You going to the TxMoMeet this year? Let me know.

I might just cook you the finest burger you've ever had, and you'll wonder why I'm not in the business of sellin' 'em.

TOO MUCH WORK is the answer, why. I came up from my teens, working restaurants. The work is a living hell.

ONLY the owners get all the praise and rewards. The staff? At BEST, a paycheck. At. Best.

Business is always to blame for bad Dem policy. Just like how that Pressley scrunt from Mass. blames Walgreen's for closing a store in a poor black neighborhood because the corporation is too cheap and won't let the customers shop for free.

Yes I watched those videos and no one ever mentioned the shoplifting. It was all 'where are these people supposed to shop?', etc. Well if these people told their kids not to steal and turned in those that didn't listen AND if the City actually prosecuted and incarcerated the thieves, things wouldn't get to be so bad.

398 Thanks, RickZ. So, Army, then?

The beginning of a picture, emerges.

My late Dad was a Korean War vet.

U.S.S. Valley Forge. And, there's a HISTORY as to that ship's rapid appearance to those shores. Worth looking up. The Great "U" Turn, in the books.

No Bronze Star though. Wasn't much direct combat ON those decks, other than the horrid weather, wind and waves.

One sad Valley Forge crewman though, met his end from another ship's 20 mm cannon, as it's Anti-Aircraft fire swept the Valley Forge's decks. Her only combat loss in the Korean War, was that.

The long intro to Get Shorty
This intro was longer and slower than the quickly-paced intro in the released film. Test audiences were bored by the slow pace and didn't find it funny or interesting. Editing saved the opening and saved the movie -- cutting everything tightly made it all funny, with an almost cartoonish energy.

What are you talking about? That is the introduction that runs whenever the movie is shown on cable. If there is a shorter one, then I've not seen it.

Great movie, noted for the role that animates the superb "racial scholarship" of Ibrim X. Kendi. I refer, of course, to the great Bo Catlett, screenwriter extraordinaire.

409 William O'Connell was 94 so he did alright. They didn't mention how he died but he was 94. I had grandparents that lived that long, a couple of them longer (grandma, 101). The heart just winds down eventually. I remember quite a few of his rolls, not just the Star Trek episode. He's the proverbial 'Hey, it's that guy!' in TV shows and movies. He seemed pretty private as a person and I respect that.

411 Morning, insomaniacals,

'Tis Friday! And 55 F. outside, dry(ish) and clear. I really ought to go work out. I really should.

The leak from above my bathroom ceiling has stopped, at least for now. On the other hand, the (mis)management of the complex has not bothered to deliver me a new lease, despite my notice to them three days ago. Yesterday I paid the same rent I've been paying for about 3.5 years now. No doubt I'll hear screeching soon.

And Mawdi Grass begins tonight, in that I have to take an alternate route home from work. A lot of the side streets I have to zigzag down are in terrible condition (the main roads are little better), and the whole business will probably take ten or fifteen minutes longer than usual.
