Thanks to Annie for compiling our weekly Prayer List. But before we get there just a few housekeeping matters (Rulz for those of you in Menasha).

1) Open thread, so feel free to lurk, opine and/or bloviate away.
2) Practice the golden rule.
3) If you must run with sharp objects please have your health insurance card ready.

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List
Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo atsign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update.
Prayer Requests:
12/16 – Jim (in kalifornia) could still use prayers. His wife is in the hospital for a routine procedure to put in liver stents. It didn’t go well. She is on antibiotics. She is in a catch-22: she can’t get chemo until her liver is healthy enough, but the tumors are also damaging her liver. Jim had an abdominal bug and had to go to the ER, but he’s better.
12/27 Update – The doctor confirmed that his wife is going through liver failure. Her “liver” is huge and 90% composed of metastases. He has no estimate for how long she has.
1/25 Update – Jim’s wife has died. He said she went pretty peacefully; her breathing went for deep slow to shallow fast, to so shallow she was getting no air Jim was with her to the end, telling her how much he loved her and recounting the wonderful times they had in their almost 26 years of marriage.
1/27 Update – Jim thanked everyone for their prayers. They are very much appreciated. He posted that he feels her loss heavily at times, and that he has the hope and belief that he will see again some day, wrapped in glory.
12/27 – TecumsehTea requested prayers for a dear friend, Pastor Joe, who has a benign brain tumor. In the past 2 years he has dealt with a heart attack and prostate cancer, and now this. He has deep faith and trusts the Lord. His family is understandably anxious. Prayers for wisdom for the doctors, peace and comfort for his family, for continued mercy and healing for Pastor Joe.
1/24 Update – Pastor Joe is scheduled for surgery on 2/1. They expect it to take 4.5 hours.
2/1 Update – Surgery was postponed until 2/8.
12/30 – FenelonSpoke updated the Horde on their church organist, Jessie (age 95). She now has bronchitis. Prayers are much appreciated.
1/6 Update – Jessie has recovered from bronchitis and appreciates the prayers.
1/3 – Browndog asked for prayers. His PSA will be tested today, to see what’s up (or down). It’s been four years since he began this fight (#howwedoing).
1/6 – Our Country is Screwed asked for prayers for his daughter. At 26 years old, she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. They are still running tests and scans to determine what treatment options are available.
1/27 Update – She will be starting chemo in a couple of weeks, followed by surgery and then radiation. She has a long road ahead of her, but she is strong and has a positive attitude. He said it’s really hard being 14 hours away from her.
1/6 – Mindful Webworker asked for prayers for his oldest friend, who has some throat problem; looking at being fed via a tube. He’s a great guy and has been through a lot.
1/10 – GnuBreed posted that he has been mostly absent from the comments as he strove to get a liver transplant. He was not able to, due to a worn out body, and he will be entering hospice soon. His end is near. He says the transplant team made a fair judgement.
1/20 Update – GnuBreed said he is doing “the home hospice thingy” and said that it sure helps him out. Some days are mostly good, so he will keep up the fight for a while. He sends his thanks for the kind words and thoughts.
1/12 – Washington Nearsider’s last day of employment has come and gone. He plans to withdraw his TSP and retirement contributions to buy time and then evaluate whether or not to list his house. His ex-wife, learning of his change in employment, is filing to contest his sole custody of their two children, and his lawyer has explained that without a job, he is likely to lose custody. Please pray that he can find employment sufficient to keep his house and his kids before losing both.
1/13 – Tipperdi asked for prayers. Her cousin lost his 23-year-old daughter in a car accident in mid-December. He’s having a hard time coping and Tipperdi is worried about his mental health.
1/13 – Screaming in digital requested prayers for R, a beloved family member who has pancreatic cancer. He is feeling pretty normal at this point. It was discovered while checking for something else. It doesn’t look like there are any reasonable treatment options for him, though.
1/20 Update – There was some good news for R – the latest test confirms cancer has not spread and is slow-moving. Now they are looking at treatment options.
1/26 – Pooky’s girl shared the good news that they are expecting a baby, approximately 9/21/2024! Please pray that it all goes smoothly for them and the new baby.
1/18 – CBD noted that long-time commenter, moon_over_vermont, passed away at the end of December.
1/20 – Cybersmythe asked for prayers for his sweetie’s son, who is in rehab.
1/20 – Screaming in digital is worried about Mom. She sleeps very late every day then dozes on the couch most of the afternoon. She can’t get interested in doing much, although she is still cheerful and not grumpy. She may be adjusting after the holidays and moving. They’ll contact her doctors on Monday.
1/20 – Jewells said she has spent the last 2 days recovering from the latest chemo treatment. Praise God, it has gone much better. She still had pain, but was able to manage it with oxy, but it makes her very weak.
1/20 – MKC asked for prayers for Mrs. MKC. She is having an elective procedure on Thursday and is, by her nature, prone to worrying about the usual risks.
1/20 – Blanco Basura asked for prayers. Her friend’s child OD’d on prescription meds. She leaves behind a husband and a 5-year-old daughter. She was 26. Prayers for peace and comfort for the family, and the little girl’s future would be good.
1/20 – Tonypete requested continued prayers for his wife’s church buddy Mike, who has advanced bone cancer and is in great pain constantly. He’s a hell of a guy and suffers without complaint.
1/20 – Fenelon Spoke asked for prayers for “P” who needs a pacemaker. She is waiting to hear when that will happen.
1/27 Update – “P” had the pacemaker installed. It went well, but she is still very sore, and her balance is off, so continued prayers are appreciated.
1/26 – Don Black asks for your prayers for his kidney surgery.
1/27 – Emmie asked for prayers for Mr. Bassman, for his upcoming knee replacement surgery. Also, they are having patient-sitters come in when Emmie has to go out, and there’s a certain amount of anxiety related to both of them. Prayers that it all goes well would be good.
1/27 – Tonypete asked for prayers of thanksgiving for his 14 year old granddaughter. She has expressed a strong interest in being baptized. Her parents are disinterested, so Mimi is picking up the slack here. Hopefully this step leads to many others on her journey to a positive life.
1/27 – Mindful Webworker welcomes prayers – daughter Sugar Plum Fairly miscarried this week. It was the second time in recent years. She and the wonderful son-in-law are hurt, but taking it in stride.
1/27 – RetSgtRN gave an update on her son-in-law, Kenny. His bone marrow biopsy last week showed 100% donor marrow, which means the cancer is gone. She sent a thank you for the many prayers sent his way. This is such a blessing for him, her daughter, and her two grandsons.
1/27 BrianinTn asked for prayers and support for Rich (in St. Petersburg), who is suffering from the advanced stages of Parkinson’s disease, and is to the point where he can no longer work, and even has trouble standing or sitting up for any length of time. Please give your prayers and support to someone who is without a doubt the nicest guy BrianinTn has even known.
1/27 – Dash my lace wings! humbly asked for prayers for her worsening lower back pain. She got checked, and an X-ray showed her spine is all curvy – not scoliosis bad, but definitely not straight. She appreciates prayers that they can get it straightened out and pain-free in short order.

Lots of rain early this morning. Lake Hadrian in the back yard has returned. There was a brief break between 6 and 7, so the puppies got out. Now the rain has returned. Should be over by 10.

It felt like April yesterday. The snowmobile trails have never opened. I don't feel safe walking out on our lake. It's a weird winter. We have had 30s and 40s the past couple of weeks.

If Little Winger likes to ice fish, send him this way when there is ice. You and the Rev can come along as well and we'll have a great old time here at Casa Misanthrope.

61 Prayers up for everyone. Their troubles make my request slight and silly, but here it is: Please pray for my Arizona-bound neighbors. They have a long trip with moving van, trailers, etc. Also, please pray I get great neighbors. Not only is their rental house vacant, the next-door former hoarder house is up for sale.

The iced coffee article is long and detailed, but meticulous and mornings don't work for me.

I make iced coffee the way the Mystic Monks taught me: make it in a press in evening but do NOT push down plunger. Let cool until ready to pop in fridge. In the morning, plunge and pour over ice.

Or, like this morning, I use frozen coffee (I have a dedicated ice tray for it). I drop the cube into a blender, pour the fresh overnight coffee over it, add milk and ta-da!

68 Would appreciate prayers for Leigh, the director of the school that Rebecca used to attend (for students of all ages with Down syndrome). Leigh noticed a large lump on her shoulder about 6 weeks ago, and it grew rapidly. She has been diagnosed with Soft Tissue Sarcoma. The tumor was removed this week, and she has an appointment with her oncologist on Monday to get the results of her biopsy and to figure out what treatment options are available.

The good news is that they think they got all of the tumor, and it did not appear to have attached to any bones.

I know that she would appreciate any and all prayers. Thanks so much!

One time request. Coworker D, widowed mom of 4 is having a rough time with daughter #1. She is having a futility of it all crisis. Skipping school, caught three times and now police and social workers are involved. Mom is beside herself. She is having to miss work and subsequent pay to do probation stuff and appointments with "therapists".

I slipped her the two emergency bills I keep in my wallet and told her to never mention it and I would request prayer from some of the best people on the planet.

She cried. Not my intention.

And quake waves really transmit out here in continental shield land, vs y'all on the crumbly left coast. Waiting for our "big one," Madrid, to shake again.

There was an earthquake a few years back (rebound) in southern Michigan. I was at drill, chatting with the chaplain, if you believe it. All of a sudden there was this vibration and a hammering noise rebounding through the building. Everyone flooded outside expecting to see the fuel tanks ablaze, or maybe the ammo storage at Ft. Custer cooking off, but nothing.

Then the calls and texts started flooding in, asking us if we'd been nuked.

In retrospect, God was getting our attention for what was coming, no?

This is why the statement released by the Vatican was such a dumb move.

Even if the *intent* wasn't to bless gay unions (or even just irregular unions), the perception by the laity was that the *result* would be just that if priests went along with the statement.

Bless you! It's a hard thing to know what to do in those circumstances. We went through a similar thing almost exactly a year ago - my eldest daughter begging us to get her away from her abusive husband. I was pretty strapped, so I asked my father for help, and we got a nice apartment for her and her two little kids and by father paid the rent for six months in advance.

Our one condition was that she not let the bastard into the place.

Which she almost immediately. So now the apartment is lost, our extended family has lost thousands of dollars, and she and the grandkids live with us. But she's also divorced and has a PPO against him. So we take it as it comes. I'm not going to say I hope your situation works out better because I think ours couldn't have worked out any other way.

I missed more events on my calendar than desired, but that's just the way it is. I kept my responsibilities light specifically to manage Mr. Bassman's care. (I do hope he has his other knee done while I'm not in school. That would be nice.)

And generally speaking, all of the quakes caused by such lubrication are "shallow quakes" with a source less than 10,000 feet deep. Shallow quakes are almost always 4 or less on the Richter scale and.cause very little damage. It is the deep Rift quakes, originating fron 25,000 feet down or so (such as the San Andreas fault) that cause incredible damage.

The aspect that has surprised me most about the Texas border standoff is that Biden and his administration have apparently decided to just back off and let Texas do whatever it wants, while they stand on the sidelines whining, but doing nothing about the direct challenge to their authority.

I'm more convinced that Biden&Assorted Scumbags will go the mercenary route with the Mexican and other Drug Cartels/Gangs.

They've made common-cause with the Drug Cartels before with Fast and Furious when they armed the drub gangs with automatic/semiautomatic weaponry for a political purpose. ie. gun control.

Obama et al were perfectly willing to kill law enforcement, military, and the citizen as long as they got whaat they wanted politically.

This would give the Feds a reason to move in to "solve" the "border crisis" of their own making.

Thank you for helping her. My mom was a widow with 4 kids ages 16-6 the eldest daughter also acted out - ran away, alcohol, got pregnant (stillborn, sadly).
We all could have used therapy back then honestly.

Whether that ends up as racial strife in the urban shit holes is debatable, but it's heading in that direction. There's no other reason for the leftist government officials in those places to be complaining about the illegals unless the blacks in the community are giving them a hard time about it.

It doesn't solve the underlying issues with open borders but it might give pause to some illegals that would otherwise enter the US thinking they'll get an unmolested free ride.

I've been trying to read my Bible more and more, and I started a "read it all in a year" plan back before Christmas. Part of why you're supposed to is because you grow and understand things better, and there are bits that you are ready to understand a bit more once you read and re-read it again.

It's very much a local thing. During Michigan's lockdown, just about all the county sheriffs (even the Democrat ones) refused to enforce the orders. My liberal college town police also said "Nah, not our fight."

That is the classical way a rebellion starts - simply disobedience. That's not enough, of course - someone has to force the issue. Right now the feds aren't doing that, but they could.

I also believe that the active duty military will be a non-factor. The officer corps is almost entirely time-servers with zero moral initiative. The ones with moral qualms have quit or are watching the calendar. The National Guard is where all the action will take place.

No, the commanders are complacent in our superiority. They look at on-call assets and also figure the locals are sufficiently cowed as not to risk a larger conflict. Lots of our guys have superiority complexes over beating up tribesmen with B-1 strikes.

314 Inspector isn't one to complain of pain, but his back has been hurting him enough that he's had to admit it's a problem. Besides keeping him from sleeping it also keeps him from being able to do even mild excercise, both of which are important for managing his blood pressure.

Tornadoes are highly localized and actually follow regular patterns. We take notice when the sirens go off, but our house is on the eastern (lee) side of a hill in a little hollow, which shelters us from high wind as well as tornadoes. They typically veer north or south of Lansing and there are maps that plot these routes. I wouldn't live in St. Johns for love or money. Only 15 miles north of us but they get hit all the time.

Plus, you can watch radar plots in real time, which is helpful. We had company one time and the sky was green, sirens going off, but we saw where it was and despite a remarkable light show and crashing thunder, we weren't effected much. I have a plastic owl to deter woodpeckers sitting on the railing, it was wasn't even moved.

I'm typing from my work office right now because my personal desktop is boxed up. Since Wednesday I've been homeless. My living arrangement I'd had since Nov. '22 came to an end, not of my choosing, and I had to be out by Wednesday. Spent the last three nights in a hotel. Currently short on cash for the next week and change, which I'm used to but under the circumstances...

I can't fix the problem long term on what I make. I need a new job. But I need a place to stay first. I'm trying to stay upbeat. I have been getting closer the the Lord and understanding how He helps me, and have seen it! But it's scary right now. And when the numbers don't work no matter what it's hard to see a way forward.

I've been looking for another roommate situation, but they've been few and far between. My local support network is overloaded with other concerns right now, and I'm trying to build new connections but it takes its own time. Plus I'm having some trust issues at the moment, related to how this came about, which complicates things.

I ask not for funds or anything right now other than advice and prayers.

349 We've experienced tornados here in Kentucky. During the day you can sort of see where one might be. At night, it's a totally different story.

Back in 2022 we evacuated our modular home because on radar it 'looked' like one was nearby. It was part of the big outbreak in December that leveled Mayfield, KY.

One tornado that was part of that outbreak did pass by, but about 3-4 miles away. It was a night I'd rather not have to live through again.

It's something that's only just been approved by the FDA, so she'll have to spend all week in the hospital being monitored. After that she'll just get a shot once a week. Her oncologist says after six months she should be in remission for a good long while.

Yeah, I would guess the reason has more to do with the percentages for female personnel, but yeah, while I'm just guessing on the non-combat ratios, I think there are good reasons to believe black men are more likely than white men to go into the non-combat roles.

And now they're quitting. People often choose the time and manner of their resistance.

This causes leaders to make the assumption you have - "Hah, the spineless time-serving hacks will do whatever we say!"

Nope, and they often find that red line by accident.

I was in a position to retire rather than taking the vaxx, but I understand that for many of my fellow Airmen, it wasn't an option. Their families were counting on them, and that's an obligation not lightly thrown aside. But they remembered it, saw how others were treated, and with time, were able to get out AND take care of their families.

Thank you. She switched from the chemo pill to immunotherapy back in October and was doing really well until a few weeks ago. She actually feels fine, in fact she's been in Florida this past week visiting one of my sisters. She's getting back today.
