Wednesday Morning Rant

"Rebuilding Trust"

Ever since the Davos crowd finally figured out that they - not just the WEF, but the "elite" in general - are pretty well reviled the world over, they've been trying to pay lip service to "restoring trust" in the masters of the universe among the global rubes. It's risen from a talking point to a primary focus among their clique.

Back in 2021, a woman called Ngaire Woods out of Oxford spoke at the WEF's "Great Narrative Meeting" about a years-long trend in trust:

... the good news is that the elite across the world trust each other more and more. So we can come together and design and do beautiful things together. The bad news is that in every single country they were polling, the majority of people trusted their elite less. So, we can lead, but if people aren't following, we're not going to get to where we want to go.

In 2021 - a bit before the conference quoted above - the WEF had restoring trust as a theme for its big annual conference in Davos, specifically about COVID. In 2022, they backed off a bit, but "trust" was still a big thing - restoring trust through agricultural policy, restoring trust in the future, restoring trust in global trade. In 2023, the Davos theme was "Cooperation in a Fragmented World" but the primary current within that theme was - you guessed it - trust:

We see the manifold political, economic and social forces creating increased fragmentation on a global and national level. To address the root causes of this erosion of trust, we need to reinforce cooperation between the government and business sectors, creating the conditions for a strong and durable recovery. ...
The "global elite" as represented by the WEF has been worried about trust for a while, and making recommendations regarding how to rebuild trust as a major component in their annual agenda for years now. This year, it finally reached top billing. It is the theme of the entire 2024 agenda:
"Rebuilding Trust"
The 54th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum will provide a crucial space to focus on the fundamental principles driving trust, including transparency, consistency and accountability.
So what do the big brains at the WEF think will help "rebuild trust?" What do our elites think needs to be done? Well, they laid it out at their Davos conference this year in the opening remarks delivered by a Swiss bureaucrat:
* An open and transparent exchange is a priority -- among states, but also with and between organisations in the multilateral system: we must strengthen the UN and other global and regional institutions ...
* ... We must prevent power politics from destroying the basis of our existence. Real progress and a societal rethink are urgently needed, especially on issues of ecological transformation. ...
* ... a renewed respect for the UN Charter, other international treaties and other globally agreed measures. ...
So, more of the same. More "internationalism." More third-party control. More Muh Climate Change. More concentration of more things into the same hands that have made such a mess of it: theirs. They just need to refocus and redouble their efforts to defeat objections by the non-elite and stymie those who oppose them - those like the Dread Populists. From the same opening address:
Some sections of the public distrust all of us gathered here, and all political and business leaders in general.

'Rebuilding trust' is not just a task for states and politicians. Business leaders also have a role to play here. It is clear that increasing social inequalities are fuelling populism, even in prosperous countries.

If the perceived elite celebrates itself a class apart while many families can barely make ends meet, distrust grows. The international community and governments can put forward the finest proposals, but should not then be surprised if they are no longer heard or understood.

They just don't get it, not even when they acknowledge that they're a cloistered elite that is alien to and disliked by those they deign to rule. Not only do they not get it, they can't get it. Too much is tied up in not getting it. This will do nothing toward their stated goal of "Rebuilding Trust." The same people doing more of the same things will not result in trust or improvement. When you are a failure and your ideas have failed and, time and again, your predictions and plans are not just wrong but catastrophically destructive, doubling down is no way to improve conditions.

The Davos crowd and their ilk are not hated by the normals because of some kind of envy. They are not distrusted because of inborn skepticism among the non-elite. They are distrusted because they stand - as they must stand - on their records. Their records are not good. Their records are not successful at large. Everything they do not only fails, everything they do increasingly ends in disaster for everyone not in their club. Eventually, people were bound to notice.

So if they want to "rebuild trust," they need to start by considering a strategy that isn't "the same as before, only more."

15 The United States of America used to be a "high trust" society. People could leave the doors of their vehicles and houses unlocked, even at night.

People could walk around--even in cities--without fearing for their wallets or their lives.

The policies on the Left have destroyed our "high trust" society and remade it into a "low trust" society on purpose.

They *NEED* us to look to them for answers, but all they can give us is dust and ashes. And thus the godhood they desire will be denied them in the end.

From reality. 20 years ago, the general level of trust in institutions - and therefore and by extension, in the institutional elite who controlled them - was a lot higher than it is today. It was a lot higher 10 years ago. Some institutions were trusted or distrusted more than their peers depending on who you ask (some have distrusted the UN, for example, for a long time), but in aggregate, baseline trust was much higher in the recent past before everything went undeniably evil and insane.

Perhaps. I think it's a bit more sinister than that.

Suppressing information about things like the rioting in France probably serves two purposes:
1. Keep other people from getting similar ideas ("you are alone in your despair" is a great tactic)
2. When the time comes for brutal suppression by the state, it is easier to spin as nothing of the sort if there is no baseline.

They are elites. They are the ones in charge. The basis of their elite status is not, however, merit. They don't deserve and have not earned their positions by beating out the rest. Most of them occupy their elite positions through pull, corruption, glad-handing, academic networks, etc. Most of the elite positions are *won,* not *earned.*

That is what they must acknowledge. That either means surrendering their elite positions to those with merit, or by maintaining them by bringing in meritorious outsiders who they can enable in exchange for the maintenance of their own positions.

That is why I don't think they will. In general, they appear to think that they earned their status. They didn't, but the concept is central. They think they're at the top of a meritocracy.

They have, over the course of their lives, seen the poor rise and the wealthy fall and, like all rich and powerful people in history, they desire to stop the wheel of fate while they are at the top. While their antics shall, inevitably, make my life less, I gain amusement from the knowledge that, in the end, they shall be no more successful than their predecessors.

If what you're recycling (post-consumer) happens to be a uniform stream of metals, or a stream of metals that can be easily segregated by type.

Aluminum and steel are great recyclers on an energy and resource basis, and the only post-consumer recycling that make any sense. There's a reason why the recycling boosters always talk about aluminum in precise terms while generalizing plastics and paper behind feel-good vagary.

It was clear that these actual elites knew they were elites, and that they had to design a better nation, but also knew that persuading the masses to approve of the Constitution would be indispensable.

141 Suppressing information about things like the rioting in France probably serves two purposes:
1. Keep other people from getting similar ideas ("you are alone in your despair" is a great tactic)

The danger, which France of all places should know, is that if you miscalculate the unrest (easy to do when you suppress all information) then what starts off as a simple protest quickly morphs into a full blown revolution. A violent and disorganized one, just waiting to see who will mobilize the angry crowds the most effecively.

Glass is a mediocre at best recycler, and usually energy-negative.

Glass is excellent for reuse, though. If you happen to live near a bottling plant, a glass bottle can be reused indefinitely with comparatively minor energy input. Washing it and reusing it is cheap. Grinding it up and melting it back down is usually a negative on a resource basis once transportation to and from are factored in.

179 the neat part is to be able to see the effects of pointless, wasteful recycling in your daily life.

Anyone have a new car? The interiors are required to be made with X% of recycled plastic. It's why they scuff and scrape so easily and look beat up within the first couple of months of ownership.

Go find a pre-2010 car and, other than maybe some sun damage, the plastic interior will look pretty much new unless something was used to gouge it, and that would take a lot of effort. Not just a pen sticking too far out of your pocket when you brushed against the door panel.

213 In 1991, the Club of Rome which is the predecessor of the WEF, published a book called The First Global Revolution. This is an excerpt.

>>In searching for a common enemy against whom we can unite, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, famine and the like, would fit the bill. In their totality and their interactions these phenomena do constitute a common threat which must be confronted by everyone together. But in designating these dangers as the enemy, we fall into the trap, which we have already warned readers about, namely mistaking symptoms for causes. All these dangers are caused by human intervention in natural processes, and it is only through changed attitudes and behaviour that they can be overcome. The real enemy then is humanity itself

The Club of Rome inspired the first UN global warming summit in Rio in 1992 and they've never turned back. When the enemy is humanity there is only one solution.

It's a lot easier than telling people "this thing you've been paying for and wasting massive amounts of water, time, and energy on for 30+ years has been a complete waste of money and we're discontinuing the program because it's always been absolutely pointless and, at best, a job creation program for some low skilled workers"

"Someone got cut once" was probably pretty easy to figure out as an option.

Yup. Unless the logistics chain is short and efficient, we lose money on glass.

My guess is that the opportunities for graft overwhelmed the mature glass-reuse industry in favor of recycling.

Pricks.

I had to make a trip to the landfill once, turned in after one if the blue recycle trucks and followed it all the way up to where it dumped its load right next to where i was dumping some general trash and rotted la dscape timbers. Nothing i could see in its load but paper. No bulky stuff, just paper.

Asked my city council member for details, and was told they basically use the blue trucks to keep the lunatics quiet since the city didn't have a recyclw facility to do it properly. That was El Paso, TX. I've seen Huntsville, AL do the same thing.

These polls are more important than the national head-to-head polls, in my view. Trump is ahead by 2-3 points in those polls also, fwiw. I don't CARE whether Biden wins CA by 25 points or 35 points. I CARE about WI and AZ.

277 Recycling, both theory and practice, comes and goes with dismaying regularity. In the 1890's, some big towns got paid for their garbage, and got it picked up free, because producers like Fisk Bros. used rendered animal fats with linseed oil. The development of better petroleum (and lithium!) based oils and greases cut way into that market, and it went away.

In the 1920's, lots of cities incinerated trash instead of stockpiling it. It required anthracite levels of heat to work cleanly, and the first time taxpayers didn't vote for an increase, cities taught them a lesson by piling up the trash and throwing a match in. That era lasted close to 50 years.

They also "farmed" garbage, at a site called a "dump." Increased evidence of toxics in household trash got reported as a health peril, which resulted in most midwest cities having a clay landfill as their highest map elevation. Then came the co-generation hoax. There is an endless market for these schemes.

284 272 I recall that Canada had a standard glass beer bottle design that the government required breweries to use.
-------
Engineered to reduce breakage; standardization so bottles would be cleaned and returned to brewery bottlers without having to separate out unique bottle styles; 12-oz in the least space to save bar [and 'civilian'!] refrigerator space. Not mandatory but the brewers agreed it was the most-efficient system.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at January 31, 2024 11:31 AM (gSZYf)

The cost of transport enters into it. Glass is heavy. A truckload of empties weighs only a little less than the truckload of full bottles that preceded it. So fuel and labor costs arise. And then you must wash (and sterilize) all those empties with very hot water and detergent (energy, $$$), and inspect them to reject those that contain a dead mouse, or a doubled-over straw. Cheaper and less liability hazard to use all new glass each time. Crush the old glass, and blend it into gravel for roads and construction aggregate.

But, mere "VIPs"? Private, ARMED security teams? You KNOW Gates ain't there without a dozen heavies, right? Bezos? The same. And, etc.

Pretty sick, we are the elite gods who will decide your rights FOR you kind of stuff.

I tried to find the whole talk in full to listen to and post here, but my search engine appears to have scrubbed it from searches, or it's been scrubbed from the internet.
