Evening and morning to all you early risers and late toilers!
I actually slept seven hours last night. Possibly because I locked the cats out of the bedroom. They must have thought they were being punished, esp. Stirling. Well, they'll forget and forgive. 'Tis 49 F. in Da Swamp. No rain expected until the weekend. When I came out to my car yesterday after work, I found a faint dust on it instead of the usual sticky scum. So rare -- and so fleeting. Talking about SSDs/Flash memory But the reality is that nothing will last longer than a real magnetic hard disk drive, all the buzz around "more modern" SSDs and disparaging talk of "spinning rust" notwithstanding. It's cheaper to make chips than mechanical things, and chip-making gets cheaper over time whereas mechanical things don't, so the whole industry is trying to push us this way. Most of that is for their benefit, not ours. Posted by: Ciampino - Day's Update #063 at January 30, 2024 04:26 AM (qfLjt) 14

Ever since Apple started naming its OS versions it has become a meaningless jumble when it comes to CPUs and GPUs. Much better to have increasing numbers than all these fancy but meaningless names. A few years hence and most people won't even remember the names/numbers of today's chips. Same with the glue-chips on the MBs.

That Biden in camo photo looks phony. Look carefully at the cord from the telephone and Biden's left hand. Neither make sense. The man in the front foreground looks like he's wearing a custom and border patrol uniform. I'm not sure why he would be at a meeting like that.

I don't know nuttin' much 'bout no ICAAN and ARIN and all that shit, but I do use OpenWRT on my routers. And if I've got it right, I've been using my own "TLD" for years without really knowing it. I use domain "lan", "lan1", "lan2" etc for various subnets I create, and use the dnsmasq daemons of OpenWRT to do DNS for those. Been working like a charm. You just set it up where it's local only, the local DNS servers know it is, and don't try to relay any such thing up to the proper public DNS system. Internally, it all works.
