They worked in different genres, though each was a master in his own. JMcD could have written "Of Mice and Men," but I doubt Steinbeck could or would have wanted to pen a crime story or thriller about a "salvage consultant" living on a houseboat (in Monterey, in his case).

I love them both. If you'd said to me when I was seventeen that I would someday love Steinbeck's work, I'd have looked at you like you had a pelican growing out of your head. But here I am.

The only long Hemingway I've liked, and that with reservations, is for Whom the Bell Tolls. It's got a long slow section in the middle like a sagging hammock where all they do is talk about "blowing the bridge" and refer to "In the milk of thy fathers." But as the story approaches the climax, it really picks up. The final scene is one of the greatest in literature.

The movie with Gary Cooper is *exactly* the same way. It even had an intermission in the middle when it was new in theatres.

They didn't see that coming and yanked the film out of circulation quickly. The other twist is all the Oakies reaching California didn't become 'True Believers' but instead made money and created the Beach Boys and Jan and Dean.

When it comes to art I sometimes have a thought. It's a kind of obscene, silly thought. Is this artist better than Hitler? Cuz, let's face it, lots of famous arteests out there were probably on par or worse than Hitler.

Eh...Maybe a little.

221 Arab-American leaders in Michigan reject Biden visit over Gaza. Can anything be done between now and November?

By November, this will be old news and they will support him again.

Sitting out the vote could be a problem. Trump won Wisconsin by only 23,000 votes in 2016. Joe took Michigan back in 2020 by 154,188 but that less than 3%.

Michigan is a problem area for Biden. The polls are bad - he's barely competitive vs Trump (last poll had Biden down .

If he loses Michigan, unless he wins Georgia/Arizona, he isn't winning, and that's with winning Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. Surprising, because Michigan was the strongest of the three rustbelt states Biden flipped in 2020.

many Americans don't understand our basic democratic political system. it’s a binary choice. They think Trump will treat Palestine better? what they are holding against Joe is he embraced Netanyahu the day after the attack. Joe just naturally shows sympathy to somebody. A two state solution by Biden and Blinken would solve everything...and if they can't do it, nobody can.

The video had more than 5,000 views before YouTube took it down, citing violations of the platform’s policy on violent and graphic content.

Leonard reproduced the way criminals and everyday people talk so closely that sometimes I don't know what they're talking about. That kind of dialog works better in a movie, as you can see the actors' facial expressions and gestures. That said, I like Leonard's Westerns and more than a few of his crime stories.

There is a short Steinbeck story called "The Snake" that is creepy and suspenseful, though. Go find it.

375 "Rocking like a wagon wheel." To make for a smoother ride in mule-drawn ambulance wagons, Studebaker developed the rocker-arm suspension system that allowed extremely long travel of the axle trunion as it bridged road ruts. A variation of it is used on the Mars rovers.

They were still building those for the AEF in WWI. Capacity of the largest wagons was a ton and a half, which became the standard spec for military trucks. Aren't you guys all engineers? You always say you are engineers. I never hear you talk about anything but programming computer games.

A smart Republican would do everything they could do to get enemies out of Congress, replaced in organization with the Republican governors of those states with more conservative Senators, and then fire the cabinet within weeks.

It would only work once and it would cause a lot of strife, but if you do it early, you could end up with a better cabinet and a much more amenable senate.

Despite the obvious shortcomings, it was preferred to have all the troops armed with muskets and plug bayonets than having 1/4 to 1/2 the unit armed with pikes [to fend off cavalry attacks] and not firearms.

453 Ace & Company, I do beg your indulgence as I have a request. Could you please use a standard for labeling the artworks you display? I prefer [artist]-[title]-[year of artwork] as it makes it easy to find an original and related works.

Cordially,

Zavod-Imeni-Lenina-Industriearbeiten et Ulm S.A.
