  • Good news, everyone: Japan's Moon lander is working. (The Guardian)

It landed more or less safely, but with the solar panels facing the wrong way, so it only had battery power. (Since there's no atmosphere on the Moon, solar cells that aren't in direct sunlight produce no power at all.)

Mission control shut it down, in the hope that after a few days the angle of the Sun would shift enough to reach the solar panels.

    It did.

That's the way to do it! We get soooo many scam calls (landline) and don't answer the questions. "How did you get this number?" is a favorite, which usually results in them hanging up. LOL

But it's a hassle. Would like to ditch the landline, except cell service is still hit- or- miss out here.

Posted by: m at January 29, 2024 05:14 AM (1BWJp)

If I'm feeling charitable, I tell the callers that I'm not interested before hanging up on them. If I'm not, I just hang up.

30 If callerID lists only city/state instead of name or even unknown... reject the call.

Most scammers now have auto-dialing tech. You answer, there's a pause, and then *bloop* sound as scam-person gets on the line. Hang up.

They spoof #s, and use different ones all the time now so can't just block numbers anymore. Pfft. PITA.

"studies show that rooftop solar could eventually meet residential electricity demand in many states if deployed widely, freeing American homes from dependency on fossil fuels. 32 Our phones have a screening feature:

Unknown caller rings up... press Call Screening button... auto-voice says "please say your name"... pause. We can then push the Answer button if it's legit. If not, do nothing... and then auto-voice says "Your call will be disconnected now. Goodbye." and hangs up on them.

Nice feature!

I utilize NoMoRobo on my landline. It's free and seems to work very well. If one gets thru, you report the number to them. If the phone rings once and stops, it's NoMoRobo blocking the call.

51 Evening and morning to all of you! I'm back from my workout and shower (not simultaneous), and am scarfing up some breakfast. I wish I could call in sick today; I only slept about 4.5 hours last night. But I suspect there's stuff I gotta handle at work. Maybe I can call in later this week.

The Killer Kittens From Outer Space are well. Stirling usually sleeps with me and makes a point of bumping me with his head (and trying to stick a paw in my face) when he knows I'm awake. Little Dagny La Siberienne doesn't do that, but this a.m. she was remarkably affectionate (for her) while I was stretching and doing my calisthenics.

There's some website which has something to do with Google Maps that will find your location, your roof orientation, and determine the approximate number of hours of usable solar per year. In corner of SE PA it came in at 1,000 hours.

Not very impressed. I do have a eight foot portable 400 watt solar panel and a 2k battery which is nice to have in power outages.

86 Our local 911 service seems to crash a couple times a year due to software problems. And it is not a small isolated local problem either. It always seems to affect about 1/8-1/4 of the state.

Keep a list of the regular phone numbers for the police, and fire departments for when 911 goes out.

87 >>The proposed legislation is said to be an attempt to address rising traffic fatalities, which in California have reportedly increased by 22 percent from 2019 to 2022. . . .

So, like, people just magically started speeding in the last 5 years? "Speed kills" - this is on par with talking about "gun deaths" as if the guns act on their own. It's a change in people's behavior. What could have caused that?

*Steve Sailer has entered the chat http://tinyurl.com/42e437rv*

Ferguson Effect/BLM as well as efforts by people like Weiner to reduce sentences, no cash bail, etc. changed traffic enforcement. And maybe all those immigrants from places w/different driving patterns. . ?
Now Weiner thinks he can just gloss over who's speeding and why it's increased with tech. Tech that assumes we're all speeders that need to be stopped by default, a paradigm shift from innocent until proven guilty mindset. Defund the police and replace it with Total Control Tech.

Timothy Thibault “engaged in modern-day leafletting on social media,” the U.S. Office of Special Counsel found after reviewing Mr. Thibault’s posts.

Mr. Thibault’s social media activity included sharing in 2020 a post from the anti-Trump political action committee Lincoln Project that itself included an article with the title, “Donald Trump is a Broken Man.”

That violated the Hatch Act, which bars federal employees from engaging in political activity while on duty. The law also imposes further restrictions on employees of some agencies, such as the FBI, such as prohibiting activity “in concert” with partisan political groups like the Lincoln Project.

93 The entire renewable energy scam is meeting the reality of its insufficiency.

The ironic thing is that as your so-called renewable energy grows so does your traditional energy needs to grow to backstop it.

Everything gets more and more ridiculous by the day.

First. He is lying.

I don't have the facts in front of me, but disease, drowning and accidents far outnumber gun deaths.

If you think you might have this convo again? Find yourself some good references for the facts.

Other frequent lies? Children and teens usually includes 16-25 year olds, the prime homicide demographic.

"Mass shootings" are anytime X number of people are shot. X is usually 4. Chicago alone had about 100 shootings with four or more shot and wounded or killed.

Well, start with the definition of "children" in those stats. It includes teens in order to drive up that stats -- gang violence.

I've been reading No Small Victory by Norman Davies, a survey of World War II from several perspectives. Basically, Davies - who's definitely no Sovaboo - says:

- There was little difference in brutality between the Nazis and the Soviets.
- The effort of the Soviets against Germany completely outswamped that of the US and UK.
- Lend-Lease didn't really get going until 1943, by which time the Soviets had turned the tide and were advancing.

If all that's true, then the Anglo-American effort in the ETO was a waste. When Hitler invaded the Soviet Union, we should have cut a deal with him and left the two to fight it out. Not only would considerable blood and treasure been saved, but we could have turned our full effort against Japan when they attacked.

Sometimes I think the isolationists back then were smarter than historians give them credit for.

Iran has enriched uranium to 60%. At least 125 kg as of last report. At 60% enrichment, it only takes one pass through the centrifuges to make it weapons grade purity. It take 25 kg of 60% to make one nuclear weapon.

So that means Iran is damned close to having nuclear weapons. PLURAL!

And Iran has North Korea and Pakistan to provide them with all the other necessary nuclear equipment and information needed.

Comparison: It takes multiple passes through the centrifuges to make 4% fuel grade from natural uranium.

129 I think Iran will keep enriching up to 60% until they have enough ready for 20-25 weapons, then go for weapons grade uranium quietly and quickly.

After they build about 8-12 actual weapons, they will test one and announce they are in the nuclear club.

Could they do that this year? While Senile Joe is in office?

Then they get serious and build 100 more bombs and develop and test a thermonuclear weapon too.

Maybe by 2028?

So you never make the energy back on the production, shipment, installation, maintenance, etc., you more than likely aren't going to break even if you paid for the equipment and installation yourself, AND you get underwater on the installations by the companies selling what is a scam no matter how you look at it.

No more of this pretending we're one gigantic mono-state with the actual states acting as some kind of super-county.

Fantastic dog. Smartest dog I've ever personally owned. Knew verbal commands, understood pointing, etc. Obedient as heck and sweet as the day is long.

But if you watched you'd still see her subtly herding people (and little kids) at parties. She couldn't help it.

I don't know why I'm expected to believe pitbulls aren't the same way.
