Gun Thread: WW Birthday Edition!

ww bday scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving hell did it get to be Weasel Woman's Birthday? Please join me in wishing her many happy returns of the day! I may be scarce in the comments tonight as we enjoy the pizza* I have generously agreed to pay for tonite. Or Chinese. I mean, we really like pizza but we had it last week, so maybe we should get chinese tonite so we don't have pizza twice in a row. But the last time we ordered chinese it took them a full 35 minutes to deliver which is obviously a problem, so maybe we should get pizza after all. Except the really good pizza place doesn't deliver so that means we have to get into the car and drive all the way to the bottom of the hill to pick it up. Why, I ask you, why would WW cause me so many problems? It's like she's trying to be difficult!

*up to three toppings. Valid one day only. May not be combined with any other offer. Void where prohibited

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

Fundamentals
When you go to the range, do you have a plan? If I have said it once, I have said it 472 times. Have a damn plan when you go to the range. Even if you're going to the range for funsies and ogling the range babes, you should have a plan to realize some sort of training benefit, because the range babes almost certainly think you're a creepy old pervert so your efforts there are definitely wasted.

Here's the AMU guy with some drills

Please have a plan when you go to the range, kay?

Guns of the Horde

First up, our pal CBD shares his very nice H&K USP!

My bedside pistol for a very long time has been a plain-jane H&K USP in .40 S&W. It is a double action-single action pistol, but the first shot double action is long and clunky and very heavy. And the reset is also not the smoothest and shortest. So why have it as a primary self-defense pistol? Because it has never had a failure-to-fire. Ever. Not once in a few thousand rounds! And it fits my hand really nicely!

012824 cbd HK USP 40 scaled.jpg

But now that my home state (NJ) has moved from fanatical Maoist to merely heavy-handed socialist when it comes to the 2nd Amendment, I figure I should consider it as carry piece. But not with that trigger! So off to Gray Guns it went for their "Reduced Reset Carry Perfection Package," and after an eight-week wait, a chat with their customer service folks about some additional parts (ouch!) and a very large charge to my credit card, it's back on my bed-stand!

They smoothed and reduced the double-action pull, and the reset now rivals that of my more modern striker-fired pistols. Even better, they eliminated the slight barrel play that the USP design suffers, and did some other magic on the action, so it feels like a new and better pistol.

I am not a super-ninja-special-forces warrior, so when I carry I want a safety (or an empty chamber, but that's a discussion for another day). A 1911 (.45ACP of course!) cocked and locked is my idea of a good time. And the USP actually gives me the option of that, or simply a heavy double-action pull followed by a normal single action. So off to the range to see how the double-action feels for the first shot.

012824 cbd USP Double Action scaled.jpg

And boy oh boy! I like it! Those four above the bulls eye are the four double-action rounds at 15 yards. The others are the rest of the magazines fired single action. Why the double actions are high is a question I will have to answer at the range with some more work, but I am very pleased with the results. The pistol feels far less clunky, and it feels like I can get back on target more quickly with the reduced reset. And it is absolutely more accurate.

I am not sure that I would carry this pistol cocked and locked, because the safety throw is long and heavy, unlike the crisp snap of my 1911 safety. But as a double-action-single-action pistol? Absolutely. The difference between the first and second shot is tolerable at self-defense distances, and the reliability of the pistol is something not to be minimized. Being able to count on your equipment in stressful situations is a very important thing!

Whoa! Nice shooting there, hombre!! It looks like somebody has their sock tension just about perfecto! Thanks CBD and congratulations!

Cigar of the Week

012824 diogenes macanudo scaled.jpg

This week our pal Diogenes scores again with this excellent review of the Macanudo Inspirado White

Apparently, I was able to fool Santa again and was rewarded with a new grab-bag of optional cigars under the tree. Not one to waste time, I picked one at random and it was the Macanudo Inspirado White. Man, did I do good!

Here is what the Macanudo folks say about it: Offers subtle expertise. Beautiful and mellow, yet complex and flavorful. Creamy, with hints of spice. This award-winning blend results from over 50 years of excellence driving evolution in all of the best ways. Adorned with a golden Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper aged for six years. The Inspirado White offers approachability without sacrificing excitement in a consistent blend that never fails to impress.

Yeah... blah... blah... blah. Pure marketing, and I have no idea what that last sentence even means, but I gotta say, this was a great cigar to start the year. Smooth, easy to light, comfortable to hold, and a really great aroma. The initial taste is a bit spicy with cinnamon. It has an easy draw, plus an even burn through the first third. As mentioned in the past, I evaluate cigars through the thirds; first, second and third. Typically, a cigar is best in the middle third with the last really bringing on the flavor and flaws if they are there. Not so with the Inspirado White. Excellent all the way through. I'm buying more of these. Mine was a 5X50 Robusto and they run about $6 a stick so they don't break the bank.

Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

Excellent, Diogenes! Thank you very much!

******

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

Cigarsinternational.com
Cigarpage.com
Famous-smoke.com
Cigarsdaily.com
Neptunecigar.com
Smallbatchcigar.com
Bobalu Cigar Company
Cigarbid.com

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

9 On that fired case, I think H&K had some chamber grooves, very shallow, which slowed things down a bit as far as recoil. HK7? I may be wrong and usually am.

HK is the king of the fluted chambers so it's most likely that 9mm was from one of their pistols or an MP5.

40 Range report. What with the cold weather and achy joints, I didn't want to go shooting. But I did. We had one day where it was cold, but dry, and things were frozen over at the "shootin' holler". Took the LCP (still a miserable little bastard to shoot, gets job done). Also, my trusty Beretta 950 said "Bill, shoot me, I need exercise". Hauled it out of the desk drawer and ran a box of ammo through it. It may be a .25 acp but a 8+1 mag dump would get somebody's attention. Finished off running a box of Stingers through the Mini Revolver. All shooting done at 7 yards and all shooting hitting target in an acceptable manner.

The fluted chamber directs gases between the flutes. This aids extraction. On the MP5 and P7, you can remove the extractor and the casing will still eject (but not reliably). The markings are from the gases coming into contact with the casing.

61 sra blaster and I have started rewatching Person of Interest. This time I pause and look at the guns. Lot's of cool ones in the show. Like a B&T VP9.

Mr Reese had an HK416 in one episode. That rifle had the diopter sights from an MP5 on it - but mounted on the rail.

Which sent me on a hunt for those. Yes, HK will sell you the rail mounted diopter sights. $249 - JUST FOR THE REAR. There is of course Chinese clone available. $20 for the pair. Buy it now!

They arrived and are cool, and mounted on an EP9.
The front post seems wound all the way down - need to zero with a boresight laser. BUT not usable with the Gaialoop red dot - the tall mount is in the way. Grr. Now I have a mismatch between guns and sights.

What to do? What. To. Do.

62 Diogenes, great review, and you reminded me of that stick. It was among the dozens of types I tried, fairly systematically, when I got more into the evil habit a few years ago. I should have notes on it, but I do recall it was in the "revisit" (meaning I enjoyed it) in the connecticut category.

Somehow I managed to pick up two pretty vicious viruses/mega-colds from another galaxy almost back to back, have not burned many sticks since Christmas. Some day soon it simply has to end, I figure.

Picked up my G42 slide after having the sights replaced after the original rear sight somehow got popped out of joint and I couldn't get it popped back in. Put it back together and shot a box. Sights are steel and work just fine. I like the G42 because it's tiny, easily concealed, especially in the summertime when I'm not wearing a bulky jacket or sweater, and I shoot it well. I focused on Mozambic drills. .380 May not be the most powerful defensive round, but that paper target wasn't going anywhere after I was done with him.

Plinked some .22 afterwards for fun with the Ruger Mark IV.

70 The Mp5 closed bolt/roller delay system utilizes the fluting as part of the extraction process. It basically helps "float" the brass off the chamber wall and creates a reliable positive extraction process.

75 HK P7 spent cases look like that brass. I had a P7 and loved that single action trigger and the smug factor with the gas operation. However it was too hot to handle after quickly cranking off 50 rounds even with the heat shield. And you must keep up the practice to discipline your three grip fingers from your trigger finger for several good reasons. And do that for both hands. Excellent engineering. Requires much attention and practice.

If you get the chance to look at the chamber for an MP5 (including the clones) or a P7, the flutes are readily visible to the naked eye. Those flutes are one of the reasons the MP5 and P7 have reputations for reliable operation even after firing lots of rounds.

89 f you have a question you would like to ask Gun Thread Staff

Dear Gun Thread Staff,

I never thought this would happen to me.

I was at the range with a new VP9L, trying to work on fundamentals, as a certain sensei advises, when an unusually large number of range babes descended, bothering me with questions about was the barrel really that long, and did it shoot better? Then, they wanted to admire it, which lead to requests to fondle it, and then actually try it out.

In desperation, I got one of my rear bags, filled with rice that had been allowed to get moldy and slightly mephitic, and cut it open, but even that bouquet failed to slow the clamor to play with it.

Finally, the RO came over, and said I had to leave, as the disruption and general rowdiness was distracting the other shooters.

What can I do to ameliorate this in the future?

FSJ, you're my only hope!

Posted by: Duncanthrax at January 28, 2024 07:37 PM (a3Q+t)

90 Thanks, Marcus and Ed L. Love the concept now that I know what it is.

My experience with case marks (scorching) so far is pretty much limited to 45 Colt in a lever gun. Trying four different powders and several different loads didn't seem to make much difference, probably because it's a low-pressure loading (toggle-action rifle), so case isn't completely sealing against the chamber.

My brother has a box full of P7s, bought when they first came into the country, and were fairly inexpensive. I remember dry firing one and wondering about that finger-discipline thing, with trigger finger and grip fingers doing different functional tasks.

back in the 80's before everything got all 9mm & tactical & *@#^ the annual stats had either .38 Spl or .25 ACP as the leader for fatality, year after year ...

"All shooting done at 7 yards and all shooting hitting target in an acceptable manner." has summed up many a range day for me, too.

92 I have made a gun-related purchase, even in my current condition (unemoloyed).

I purchased a Strike Industries Ambush 45* mount with a Viridian RFX-25 green dot sight for my rifle.

At the range, I have no trouble adjusting the magnification of my scope from 1-6 as needed, but I recognized that I will not likely have the luxury of adjustments in a real fight. The 45* green dot is my solution, and I'm excited to zero and test it out.

I'm sure a few hundred cycles of transitioning from my primary to my CQB optic will begin drilling in the muscle memory.

See?!?! We support transitioning!!

101 Took my H&K SP5K-PDW to the range with its new Holosun 503G ACSS red dot optic to the range this weekend. With the red dot zeroed to the max range allowed (20 yards), this set up is a tack driver. At 20 yards, I could put every shot into the black on 25 foot police qualification silhouette from a standing position. The ACSS red dot optic includes a bullet drop compensator, so you can engage targets at 100-200 yards using a 9mm PCC. You don't often see this kind of reticle in a micro-sized red dot sight. And, for $250, the price isn't bad either. It is a micro sized sight, so your eyes might strain a bit if your vision isn't the greatest.

105 Range duty day again saw little chance to shoot, just verified basic function and elevation clicks for my M1 food using a new powder (TAC) with a few clips, and a few mags with the 1911. All to prep for the action rifle two-gun match that was, of course, canceled by rain - which despite last year, remains a fairly unusual and infuriating thing here.

A new problem has developed, parking. When two or more Navy ships do their qualification days (I think involving more than just the weapons detachment people), it swamps the available parking.

And while the border areas to the east in AZ and TX famously resemble a dystopian apocalypse movie these days, for the 2nd month in a row not a single "migrant" walking up the access road. But also didn't see a single green and white (BP) all day - very odd. Think they're almost all pulled into "processing" duties.

116 Why the double actions are high is a question I will have to answer at the range with some more work
I wonder if you're still compensating for the old DA pull? You "know" you're going to eventually jerk it low, so you push it up a tiny bit when you start the first trigger pull.

Very nice report, CBD. I'm getting to the point of tweaking a gun or two for better results, myself. I'm wondering where that line is between DIY and Gunsmith, for me.

Oh, and I got a trigger gauge finally. Only two weapons in my house (OK, I haven't tested the Enfield or the Mossberg, yet) are a problem: my Windicator in DA (the one I want to buy a Colt Python to replace - everyone at DMV MGC knows about that one) and my little Taurus G3c. 122 I think that the P7 has a lot of intrinsic value. I admired how stout the magazines were. The grip made an audible click when compressed and a still louder pop when released if a round was not fired. Maybe there was training to cut that noise down, but I was unaware of it.

123 My brother has a box full of P7s...

Posted by: rhomboid at January 28, 2024 07:37 PM (GcNJ2)

Probably a better long term investment than a bunch of alternatives, like some tech stocks or commercial real estate. Last I checked, the ex-West German police P7 PSPs (the most common variant) are going for $2,500 to $3k each. The P7M13 (the Hans Gruber special) are already hitting $10k if they have the original box and spare magazines. The magazines for any P7 variant are now unobtainium.

IIRC, the H&K P7 marketing focused on the pistol's drop safety features. At the time (early 1980s), a lot of semi-auto pistols were not necessarily drop safe. This was the rationale given (among others) to justify the P7's higher price point compared to other alternatives.

128 Wolf is more of a marketer than an actual ammunition maker. For a long time they were best known for eastern bloc military surplus, some of it excellent, some "Russian basement" grade.

We used their top grades of smallbore quite a bit, and every batch seemed to be from a different (but reputable) manufacturer. As you know, conventional prone competitors spend more time testing .22 batches than actually practicing, and that variability of case lots was all that was keeping Wolf's Match Extra, or Gold, from running with Eley or Lapua at national matches. We had a case of the top grade that we thought was made by RWS, for maybe 2/3 the price. Great for training, matches other than Distinguished qualifiers, or actual, you know, shooting. Ask a lot of questions about each grade and its origin, for match use.

There is a way to release the grip safety without the loud "clack" you usually hear. There's a very small button right behind and above the trigger. But doing so is pretty complex and takes practice. In real life, there would be very few situations I can think of where you'd need that kind of tactical edge.

138 This match started years ago with everyone shooting 10-22s and 3-9 power scopes. People then started experimenting, looking for an edge. Now, $2000 vudoos, $25/box ammo, barrel tuners, cans, the works.

Gamers gonna game. It happens every time somebody tries to set up something "just for fun" whether it's guns, cars, anything.

139 OK, we decided to get pizza, specifically Dominoes pizza because they has a special on two large 2 toppings for under $16, although we had to drive past the really good place and pick them up. One sausage and green pepper, and the other pepperoni and mushroom. Sausage and green pepper was fine, but the other had ZERO toppings, just a cheese pizza which was the one for WW.

Thanks Dominoes. Birthday ruined!

144 I suppose it's not a big deal if he's locking the slide back, but on that cease fire call in the "Etiquette" video, he yanked on the slide, THEN dropped the magazine.

Maybe it's just too much experience with people shooting the clearing barrels in Bosnia, but it is ALWAYS, 1) drop the magazine, THEN you pull the slide/charging handle back. Aside from the issues the M16 (and ARs) has, it's way too easy to pull the slide back and let it go - thereby putting another live round in the chamber - if the magazine is still in.

Even if you catch it - "Oops, I just put another round in the chamber" - and you fix it, that's one extra loose round to chase around the shooting bench that you now have to put back in a magazine.

The fact that P7 magazines, parts, and most accessories are long out of production also helps relegate the P7 to collector status. A cool and interesting collector's piece, but it's still a collector's piece.

153 I went to the range this past Friday with a plan. I loaded up some rounds trying to reverse engineer the Federal Gold Medal 308 round. I still need to run the targets through OnTarget to measure them but it looks like my Ruger Precision rifle likes a slightly increased load of IMR 3031 compared to the Gold Medal round. Didn’t like 4064 so much, H4895 and even the H335 set I loaded could possibly be tweaked. All in all it was a good range session.

It depends on what you have and how much trouble you're willing to go through. Yes, your LGS will take a big chunk of the sales $$, but they 1) take off your hands, 2) take on the responsibility and work of trying to sell the thing, and 3) they will take a big chunk because they have bills to pay for their brick and mortar operation. For actual collectible guns (higher condition, desirable firearms), you're better off going to one of the auction houses EX: Rock Island, Morphy's) or dealers that specialize in these things. And if it's an NFA item, you'll have to go to one of those specialized dealers anyway.

Shooting the clearing barrel in Iraq and Afghanistan was a big deal. A USAF O-3 I served with in Afghanistan shot the clearing barrel on his next to last day in country. He finally left for home a week and half later with 1) an field grade Article 15, 2) a letter of reprimand signed by a two-star, and 3) a negative officer evaluation signed off by an O-6 and the same two-star. That's how you wreck your military career in just a few minutes.

Places like Gunbroker.com, Simpsons and GunSpot will give you and idea on what an item is worth. Then you have shipping and possible sales tax to factor in. Also, any transfer fees if your not an FFL or vice versa.

I sold a few pistols over the years and if I got 80% return I was happy as I got to shoot them and learn their history, etc. then sold to others with similar interests. Pistols are expensive to ship as they have to go overnight to prevent theft by the democrat employees of Fedex or UPS but once you know the desk jockeys then they can help you out there.

IMO, this is one of those "everyone knows" things that just isn't so. Granted, the first time is a yuge PITA but there some very good videos that show exactly how to do it. Then the second time it's a much smaller PITA. Then after that it's a snap.

I suggest that if you're going to keep gubs until you die (especially heirloom/family related ones), that you begin the process of documenting their history and other details in addition to the basic make, model, and serial # info. Giving someone who will have to take care of disposing of your personal property a guide to things that person might know little to nothing about the value some guns might have. Even something like an appraisal via a GunBroker lookup on a certain date is better than nothing. I think Whig has recommended this step several times on this blog.

Your welcome. The shipping is the pain in the ass part. If you deal with a gun shop or pawn shop locally, ask them if they can ship for you if they have a commercial UPS or FedEx account and hook them up if they can. Most FFL's like to have the business and Gunbroker will have a list of FFL's in your area to meet and greet if you don't have one.

Good luck!

And the mags interchange with S&W pistols.

Just 30 Justin suppositories allowed here. But the mag interchangeability is a plus.

When I read "Ships with (one) 17-round magazine and (two) 23-round magazines" at the S&W site, my heart dropped; but at least it is sold here.

Hoo boy. It was an automatic Article 15 by the time 1ID took over. And I have a long-ish story* to tell about the time 3 guys put rounds into it from their M-16s, almost one after the other.

Also, one of our NCOs got booted from a base camp because he didn't follow procedure and put a M-9 round into one. I had to babysit him in the Hummer across the street from the camp while the rest of the team did their thing.

(* Ask me and I will gladly tell the story at a MoMe.)

For not much money, you can set up a gun trust to own all your bangsticks. That way when you pass, they do not have to go through probate .
It’s a good way to catalogue and identify your goods without having them disclosed to the whole world when you go. Also to pass them on to whom you want . Aside from NFA items.

266 Those powder smudges from the fluted chamber remind me...
Took wife to range to try out her shiney new Ruger Security 380. EZ Rack type for those with weaker grips due to being somewhat arthrictic of 95lb dripping wet females.

Anyway, started on the low end with White Box and showed her the smudge around the mouth and how that is an indicator or not enough pressure to expand the round and seal the chamber. On to regular Norma FMJ which had much less smudge and a bit more recoil. And maybe a slightly flatter primer... Finally the Norma MHP defense rounds... noticably more recoil, no smudge, and noticably flatter primers. She didn't care for the more noticable recoil, but if we went straight to the MHPs I dno't think she would have complained.
In all she shot about 100 rounds. Got some decent groups out of them including a bullseye.

A good reason (or excuse) to go to the outdoor range in the colder months is to see if you can get your gloved fingers into the trigger guard of your CCW pistol and manipulate the trigger effectively. Hey Ed! I'd like to go to this range but the website says you must bring your own target stand, which I don't currently own. Granted, I have limited experience with outdoor ranges (not a total noob, we were members at the one in Laramie, and I've been to a few others here and there) but this is new to me. But that's a good suggestion, and I have yet to test out my defense ammo as you advised me earlier. There are other ranges nearby as well, so I have many options. My problem now is time (don't like to leave Mom for more than a few hours or so) and being up to my eyeballs in boxes still.

I was amazed at the consistency of the velocity from the Norma rounds (+- 6fps). Maybe the quality of the brass has something to do with it?

Too late!

I replaced it with a Browning Buck Mark, and I am a very happy camper, even though it was the first pistol I have ever sold, and I felt a bit dirty...

286 P365XL. You might be better off toting something else.
Posted by: Ed L at January 28, 2024 09:05 PM (yRXSd)

Yeah, I hope I can sort it out. I got the one with the longest grip already, and I don't think the smaller one will help.
Posted by: sniffybigtoe at January 28, 2024 09:11 PM

The XL takes a 12 round grip, the X-Macro (which may have either the P365 3.1" barrel or the XL 3.7" barrel) takes the 17 round mag and is the longest.

The mag release is in the same place on all grip modules. You might try a different grip module. I'm happy with Wilson Combat's, which sticks out a little further, but paradoxically is harder to 'accidentally' press for me, for some reason.

288 Question on the residue on that 9mm: does it come off pretty easily when you tumble it? Or does it require something extra?

Posted by: GWB at January 28, 2024 09:38 PM (32nmx)

289 Yes, I was pleasantly surprised by the Norma and glad I ordered a bunch. It’s very close to my best handloads.
This test will pit my Hornady 140s against my Nosler 140s.

Not sure. I'd imagine it'd clean up like any other brass. Might take a couple passes through the cleaning machine. I use crushed walnut.

Depends on the powder the cartridge was loaded with originally. The cleaner burning (i.e. more costly) powders shouldn't leave too much behind, but you'll never be able to restore the brass to its original unfired condition. If you look closely enough at brass that's gone through an MP5 or P7, you'll see traces of the flute marks.

294 Hunting question: do I buy a good scope first, or a good-sized freezer?

A good scope will help you fill a freezer better than a good freezer will help you fill a scope.

You might want to get one or more of those laser emitting cartridges or dry firing devices that work w/ your smart phone so you can practice in the house. If you do, I think getting dedicated magazines specifically for practice (and marked as such w/ tape or something else) to keep the training stuff away from the live stuff.

319 Yep, the 9mm casing is from a fluted chamber, almost certainly an MP5.

The fluting aids in extraction; the casing is floating on a thin film of gas. As a roller-delayed gun, the MP5 needs the fluting because it starts to extract while pressure is still fairly high in the chamber; without fluting, it has a tendency to tear the rims off.
