Roger Ball - Pacific Clipper.jpg

Greetings, oh, great Horde of Spades! As a humble ONT, I offer the classic story of the Boeing 314 “Pacific Clipper”, piloted by Pan Am Captain John Ford. The Pacific Clipper started it’s ‘round the world journey with a regular scheduled flight to New Zealand. On December 7th, 1941, they were on their way back home, but “some people did something”.
Below are several links from many of the available sources. Many publications have recounted this incredible story. If you have any interest in history, it’s worth a look and a listen.

First:The PAN AM Podcast: Episode 44: Capt. Robert Ford and the Long Way Home

"In this special episode we will be exploring the incredible life of Pan Am Captain Robert Ford, a trailblazing flyingboat aviator that found international fame with an unscheduled flight round the globe. And we welcome back tothe program Pan Am 747 Captain John Marshall that knew Pan Am legend Captain Robert Ford and recorded aninterview with him in 1994 shortly before he died."
"Excerpts of this rare interview are played and you will get to hear the actual voice of Captain Ford talking about this aviation career in the late 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s!"

Next, a post from the Pan Am historic preservation site:

Pan Am's Pacific Clipper Journey in World War 2

The calm serenity of the flight deck early on this spring morning was suddenly shattered by the crackling of the radio. Radio Operator John Poindexter clamped the headset to his ears as he deciphered the coded message…Pearl Harbor had been attacked by Japanese war planes and had suffered heavy losses; the United States was at war...They realized that their route back to California was irrevocably cut, and there was no going back. Ford ordered radio silence, and then posted lookouts in the navigator's blister. Two hours later, the Pacific Clipper touched down smoothly on the waters of Auckland harbor. The odyssey was just beginning.

Finally, here's an interesting blog published by a young Aussie history enthusiast:

The Long Way Back: The Farthest Flight of the Pacific Clipper
Two hours after receiving the world-changing news that the naval base at Pearl Harbor had been blasted by the Japanese, Captain Ford and his crew executed a landing off the coast of New Zealand, taxiing up to Auckland and tying off. Passengers and cargo were offloaded and the plane was prepared for…well…they weren’t exactly sure what for…but they wanted to be prepared at the very least!
he_flew.jpg

So that’s how they did it in the olden days. If you want to see how it’s done today, this is an excellent video from a wife/husband team flying an Aer Lingus A-321NeoLR from Dublin to Newark and back. (Wife/husband because, though they are both captains, she’s in the left set. That’s why we call her “boss”!) You’ll see some great views of Manhattan which I’m pretty sure are much better than from street level. Delightful accents and 4 days on, 4 days off is a pretty nice duty rig.

As far as careers in aviation history are concerned, we know that all the service academies have been going through the DEI gender grinder [i.e. Destroy Every Institution]. I mean,
remember this traitor? But kudos to the ZOOMIES because they made recent history by graduating the new Miss America. Even better, Madison is actually a pilot. The media doesn’t have to lie about that. Now, she holds just a Private ASEL certificate, but she has been pretty busy, what with post-grad and pageants and such.

airman_cert.jpg

For those rightly concerned about doxing, that is not it. Airman certificate information is not classified. Although, I think Madison should have opted out from allowing her address to be shown, like I did. You could look up my info if I gave you basic information, but that information is classified. (jk) In any case, we should have all seen the pictures by now.
madison_3.jpg

I can’t seem to find her class ranking, but a BS in Astrophysics clearly puts her out of my league, I was so hoping. But then, she’s going to the Harvard Kennedy School for post-grad work.‘The Sky is Not the Limit’

In her four years at the Academy, Marsh rose to the rank of Second Lieutenant, was selected as an air force pilot, earned a degree in physics with a focus on astronomy, gained admission to the Harvard Kennedy School — and became a pageant queen.

“Rose to the rank of Second Lieutenant”? Oh, aren’t civilians adorable? “Selected as an air force pilot”? See? No training required now! One is just “selected” as a pilot. I will admit, that will save a whole bunch of training costs, but there may be other, uh, issues. They use the words but they don’t know what they mean. I hope the “Harvard” brand (or stink) doesn’t mean that she must vote demokkkrat from now on, does it? In all sincerity, I wish her the best of luck and fortune. As far as flying airplanes though, a Private certificate is a long, long way from an F-35 ejection seat.

John Sailer: The DEI Rollback (The Free Press)

“We’re using identitarianism to force people into boxes, and into victimhood, and I just don’t think that’s helpful atall. In fact, I think it’s harmful.”

"identitarianism"? I learned a new word!
"Lawmakers in more than a dozen red states have either passed or proposed sweeping* higher education reform packages curtailing DEI initiatives. Florida banned state funding for DEI programs. Texas banned DEI offices outright. Oklahoma governor Kevin Stitt signed an executive order in December that prohibited funding DEI initiatives not just at universities but within all state agencies."

*I hate that word, mostly because of demokkkrats.
Well, Texas, Florida, Oklahoma? I mean, duh. BUT, read on!
"Things are different in blue America. But there are a few signs even in these states that the mood has shifted. For the fall 2023 hiring cycle, for example, the University of Massachusetts Boston quietly eliminated its diversity statement requirement."

Even the Peoples Republic of Massachusetts??!?!?! Dogs and cats living together!

I mean, sometimes you just gotta laugh: “God steps in to stop her lies.”

Keeping on the light and fluffy trail, you probably thought Michael Ramirez just drew great cartoons!
WEF.jpg

Well, you're right! He is an American treasure. But he also creates with words.
Michael Ramirez Essay: Open Borders
"It is quite remarkable when you think of the current technology that we have, the simple task of securing the border, processing legal immigration, setting up a competent guest worker program and making our Homeland “secure” is beyond the grasp of the Secretary of Homeland Security."

"In The Sun article, the robot says, “I spend a lot of time thinking and processing the information I receive as I am not your typical robot. I am an adaptive learning robot, meaning I learn from humans and the resources they put before more.”

"It’s too bad we can’t say the same for Secretary Mayorkas or President Biden."

Yeah, I’ll second that, Michael. Thank you for sharing your talent and voice with us.

Be careful out there, oh Great Horde of Ace! Roger, out.

7 Bill Melugin @BillMelugin_ 8h
EXCLUSIVE: Internal CBP data I obtained via FOIA request reveals 13 years of known gotaways data at the border, showing gotaways have *exploded* under the Biden admin compared to the Trump & Obama years.
This is the first time these numbers have ever been revealed.

FY2010 155,599
FY2011 86,226
FY2012 105,105
FY2013 171,663
FY2014 162,071
FY2015 101,495
FY2016 106,643
FY2017 104,294
FY2018 128,679
FY2019 151,466
FY2020 136,808
FY2021 387,398
FY2022 606,131
FY2023 670,674

For perspective, in the decade of FY 2010 through FY 2020 under both Obama & Trump, CBP recorded over 1.4 million known gotaways.

Posted by: andycanuck (ZdexC) at May 15, 2024 10:01 PM (ZdexC)

8 Bill Melugin @BillMelugin_ 8h
In the three years of FY 2021 through FY 2023, CBP recorded over 1.6 million known gotaways.

A reminder, @PressSec has previously claimed that Biden has “done more than anybody” to secure the border.

Known gotaways are illegal aliens seen or detected via cameras, sensors, footsign, etc, but are never apprehended.

24 Pooky has circled the globe at least twice. I know he was somewhat miserable when his plane broke down in Diego Garcia (probably because he could only email his wife and he was used to USAF internet connections), but the place had gorgeous beaches, snorkeling, warm rain showers, $5 rum pitchers, and a giant poisonous spider living in the back of the van that he made friends with. Other than the last item, it sounded like heaven to me and I wish I could put it on my bucket list.

Well, nobody pays me for rhyme/meter poetry. And that can be work.

I did write a 'free-form' poem, but I still followed a rule. The poem is 26 words, each word a letter of the alphabet, starting with 'a'.

"A brisk chill does evoke fanciful games,
Hidden in January's keen light. . . ."

I took poetic license with the letter 'x', using the word 'examine'.

Great aviation stories are worth waiting for a quiet room and undistracted time.

I don't know if the story covers it or not? But, I'm imagining the sheer WORK that Pan Am would've had to have done, to get MONEY wired to various banks or embassies, all along the planned route(s), to allow that pilot to buy fuel, food, maintenance and lodgings.

Hell, the telegraph bills alone, had to have been epic, in and of themselves.

157 You know, I think PanAm's Pacific Clipper could have just made it home by way of Papeete, Tahiti, then Easter Island, and then Lima, Peru. I don't think the Japs were active in that region of the Pacific at all.

There was a lot of panic in the Pacific in December, 1941.

They probably didn't want to take any chances of running into an unexpected Japanese operation.
Posted by: The ARC of History!

They might not have been able to use Easter Island until Easter, delaying their return.

211 If the Lieutenant was "selected to be an Air Force pilot" then she's not going to any post-grad work. It's most likely that she went through the pre-pilot-training program at the Academy. It's not a rigorous entry system (basically physically qualified and you got into the Academy), but it does wash people out (who then go on to other careers in the AF if they otherwise graduate).

Pilot training is basically a year, though. Post-grad work is generally starting at the beginning of the next academic year for those sorts of programs. So you have to put off one or the other.

Departed the USA on May 22, 1942. But by the time the planes got to Egypt, the Japanes had captured those Chinese airfields. So they stayed in Egypt and made the first USAAF attack on the Ploesti, Rumania, oil refineries on June 11, more than 13 months before the famous mass low-level Plosti raid by B-24s on August 1, 1943. Just watched 'Voyagers' on Amazon Prime. 'Lord of the Flies' in space. Earth is in trouble. There's a planet 64 years away. They use artificial insemenation in factories to breed the best and brightest, raise them alone not letting them know anything about Earth so they won't be discouraged during the trip.

They're the first generation during the flight. The next generations will be bred through artificial insemination too. The third generation will land. They take off but when the 30 kids are teens, a few of them discover the blue liquid is to make them more compliant, and to dull all ambition and sexual desires. A few go off the drink and crap breaks loose.

Okay, I taught in South Korea, broke my arm and was in the hospital for 17 days in a room with 7 other guys. GREAT CARE! But everyday, we got packets of pills to take with meals...3 times a day. The Koreans are incredibly logical. I really think there was something in the pills to prevent erections.

To get that, they have to get US documents, which Brazil will officially recognize, but to do that, the kid needs a birth certificate....

The bottom fell out here briefly, which my new weather station recorded. It said the peak rainfall rate was 3.85"/hr (that's right at DVIP level 4, as my cousin would say).

The heaviest lasted only about 5 minutes. The station total did undercount a bit. The regular gauge said a hair about 1" total (including about 1/4" from earlier). The last 0.7" or so fell rapidly.

That's the problem with the tipping buckets. They will undercount at very high rainfall rates.

Which means people will not be able to go to these hospitals for their medical needs if Medicare, Medicaid and some sort of VA or TriCare is what they have for insurance.

Funny thing. We spent about 25 minutes of a 30 minute visit updating him on the situation with my F-I-L, which we had filled him in on last time I saw him. His medical assistant, a "kid" who wants to be a PA was trying hard to look like he was transcribing my visit, but he was all ears about the missing person and cadaver dogs. At the end, the kid asked me "is there a podcast about that case?" I said no, but gave him the url for the Curious Disappearance blog. Nah. I can read what needs to be "said" in about 1/3 the time the speaker takes to say it.

And that's without any "speed reading" technique. But, I just naturally read very, very swiftly.

Unless I get a particularly engaging book or article. Then, I'll shift into low, and savor it as would one with a fine steak dinner. And even then, the print is always better than the sqwaker.

362 Good evening

After attempting to lie, HHS Secretary Becerra says the quiet part out loud. Joe Biden’s government will withhold funds from religious hospitals that refuse to provide sex-change operations for young children.

Hospitals, schools and other institutions that desire to act according to their conscience are going to have to make a choice: take the king's money or trust God.

The other side of that coin, is that those of us who use such services will have to search to find institutions that are not owned by the government.
