Mornin' all.
Stargate rewatch is now up to season 8, which is where Stargate Atlantis starts. Also when they started production in HD. It's still holding up. Posted by: Pixy Misa at January 27, 2024 04:04 AM (BLOW1) 3
For sure, Google has its own set of terrible problems when it comes to the Play Store (random developer account bannings with no explanation and no human intervention is a big one) but I simply cannot fathom how Apple enjoys such incredible developer support when the Cult of Fruit treats said developers like human refuse.
I've always been an android guy since the first Motorola Droid hit the scenes. When the original iPhone came out, I took a look at it and said "this thing can do half of what my Treo 700w can" - and promptly saw idiots line up for miles to fork over twice the amount of money for it than I paid for my Treo. That's a hell of a disclaimer, Pixy.
Well, I finally made it to Season 5 of 'The Expanse'. I think I'll binge Season 5&6 over Super Bowl weekend. I'm not planning to watch it anyway. I know the TV show is different from the books, but I may just break down and buy the books. I've heard nothing but good things about them. The TV show is great. Here's an actual tech question from me-
What would be the reason that sometimes my text messages are received by others and sometimes they are not? Posted by: FenelonSpoke at January 27, 2024 04:10 AM (+6aNc) 6
Isn't there already basically a watermark on AI images, as they look like fake crap and are now mostly used to create fake onlyfans whores?
Im guessing California state senator Scott Weiner will be against that, because the watermark will be a turnoff for all the AI images he makes of youth soccer teams and boy scout troops. Posted by: Rbastid at January 27, 2024 04:11 AM (KCLy4) 7

I don't know Fen. May not be anything you're doing. Could be an equipment foul up between you and whoever you're texting too.
I receive text messages out of order from the sender. Makes the conversation a bit disjointed. Posted by: Puddleglum at work at January 27, 2024 04:14 AM (qKYfj) 9

Posted by: Puddleglum at work at January 27, 2024 04:09 AM (qKYfj) I found the 2nd book to have an insufferable character (who I actually didn't mind in the show) of Avrilsala (can't remember the spelling). Basically in the books she's a real man-hating c-bag and after repeated chapters of that nonsense I had to put it down. Posted by: Defenestratus at January 27, 2024 04:15 AM (a358J) 10

AI image generation is actually advancing rapidly, unlike AI chatbots which are just building new layers of garbage on top of the old garbage. In a couple of years AI image have one from putting seven fingers on hands - or three, or none - to much more subtle problems like the hinges on doors being in the wrong place. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at January 27, 2024 04:10 AM (+6aNc) Depends on whether you're using an iPhone or an actual computing device. Apple of course, doesn't use the standardized methods of sending texts to people so if you send a text from your f*cking insufferable fruit phone to anyone else - its dealers choice whether iMessage decides to deliver it or not. Especially on group texts. Of course Apple could fix this tomorrow by embracing RCS like the rest of the carriers and phone makers and OS developers - but noooooo that would make them less of a bunch of asshoes and we can't have that. Have I mentioned how much I loathe and despise Apple? Posted by: Defenestratus at January 27, 2024 04:18 AM (a358J) 12

Posted by: Pixy Misa at January 27, 2024 04:16 AM (BLOW1) Im not even thinking about the issues like that. The images just don't look like real images. Lighting is usually off, smoothing is horrible, and colors are generally unrealistic. Either way the law is moronic as people have been doing better fakes of everything for years with Photoshop, but since AI is the new buzzword they'll use that as the new attempt to basically torch the constitution. As I mentioned on the ONT, I'm relieved. I thought I had some sort of arcane routing problem with the OpenVPN tunnel I've got set up between two routers on my network and the one at my mother's house, after I upgraded OpenWRT running on the Linkys routers. I thought something had changed due to the upgrade. I was staring and starting at routing tables and configuration files. Turned out to be due to a typo, which I could not see. Well, not really a typo. A 60-bit IPv6 global prefix changed, as it does when you change things. I didn't notice the change, thought, hey they gave me the same prefix, and then was blind to it. Nope, it wasn't the same. The last 4 hex digits of the new block were "5f70". the last digits of the old block were "f520". See, a f and 5, zero at the end, and a 2 and 7 sort of all looking the same. Took me over a week to figure it out. Verizon has the Galaxy A15 for sale for $200. The A23 for sale for $350. The Google Pixel 7a is $550. None of these phones will be generating AI memes anytime soon but they will all text just fine. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at January 27, 2024 04:24 AM (sQWHi) Even as someone who is somewhat tech savvy, i never buy a new Apple or even Galaxy, just way too overpriced. Ive got my last 3 phones as new old stock phones on Ebay, paying only $150 to $250 for a phone a few generations old. I mean right now im on a 3 year old Galaxy S8 and it does everything I need it to (well except I can't torture myself with the DanMachi game since i don't meet the specs, but not a big deal) I may upgrade soon to an S20 as they're now about $225-$250 new on Ebay. Only downside im looking at is the size, as these have become less pocket friendly. And my preferred case (Otterbox Strada Folio) apparently is shit for the S20. Okay, I've had it with Chrome and it's "security" and safety. It just blocked a download from the router's HTTP interface. The download was a tar.gz archive of the current configuration. Which I'm saving as the latest, fixed working state. Why? Because it's over a http, and not https "secure connection". And this is on the local LAN, not public internet. The router will do https, but Chrome doesn't like that because it uses a self-signed certificate and tries to warn me the site is "unsafe". My own router's configuration page is unsafe. This is just stupid. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at January 27, 2024 04:42 AM (w6EFb) Posted by: FenelonSpoke at January 27, 2024 04:48 AM (Ki//m) 25
I have to say I am completely impressed with the arrogance and hubris displayed by Apple technically complying with the EU's app and app store fee mandate while at the same time not complying with the EU's mandate by doubling the cost of the fee structure. That is some pro level legal wrangling there. This really does qualify to be labeled as breathtaking.

Microsoft what are we going to do with you. Back in the XP days sometime after SP 1 The entire corporate network got whacked with worm that took down the entire network. At that time there was a bazillion test Labs and every single machine had to be flattened and brought back to life as did every single worker bee computer. It was a beautiful thing. This cock up barely made it into the tech press and was effectively permanently buried. Shortly after that all SP2 development was stopped cold and for the next few months to a year every person in a technical role spent many hours in security classes and how to write and test secure code. It was a beautiful thing. Once things sort of got back to normal, sp2 and XP were written from the ground up to make sure that they were secure as they possibly could be under the conditions. This complete rewrite was released as SP2 and was effectively a brand new operating system. This screwed up the development timeline for Vista and greatly contributed to that foobar mess at release. This too was a beautiful thing.

I've got an old HP 8600 Officejet. Both Chrome and Firefox refuse to connect to it in secure HTTPS mode because it doesn't do the latest security, TLS2 I think. It tries to use TLS v1.x or something. I had to use Edge in "IE comptability mode" to connect. And then disable passwords, so the full configuration can be accessed without HTTPS. Again, all over a fucking printer on the LAN. Posted by: Defenestratus In the 2000s Microsoft had two things on their mind: new features and hitting release dates because that drove revenue and stock price. So at that time, yeah, they were pretty much the current version of Boeing. After Nadalla got control of the company everything dramatically changed. Today they're so huge they trip over their own feet all the time in ways that are amusing and irritating simultaneously. I make no bones about it, I bleed Microsoft blue If I get a paper cut. For all their goofy stuff, they were extremely good to me and provided me with a great life. Posted by: Lost in Space at January 27, 2024 05:15 AM (c2MGA) 45
>> Not trying to be facetious - but could you just use cURL to do what you're doing?
Might could. Don't know. Setup is this. Printer configuration/settings page, built in HTTP web interface. When you set a password for the thing, certain "sensitive" settings are only allowed through HTTPS connection. It automatically redirects. But, being old, when it does that redirect, it doesn't do the latest TLS whatever protocol, and Chrome and the Firefox balk and refuse to connect. All you need is some old browser or old what-you-have that will do the older TLS to connect. Which IE compatibility will allow. All Chrome and Firefox need is a way to allow you to do that if you need to. Put it in some arcane configuration settings not obvious to the casual not tech user, but allow a way to let one say, "don't worry about security too much for stuff on the local subnet, here". The word processor, and probably the spreadsheet reached full maturity around the year 2000, if not before. This is why everyone is trying to move to a subscription model. Once something reaches the limit of features and capability for the task, there's no reason to upgrade. Any additional features are just counterproductive. I'd still happily use Word/Office 97. Right now, I use Office 2010 and even that's too new. Still can make that work, even with Windows 11. No, MS, I'm not upgrading. I get tired of this. If you don't like Apple, that's fine. I don't like Android. And if you haven't had a crappy Android phone, you aren't tryng. I have enough Apple products to know how to troubleshoot them, because that makes me a competent tech. I never buy the newest stuff. I don't use their laptops because of work, but I might get an older one when I'm retired. Apple is a hardware company. They have a brand and that's what the cultists push. But the hardware does hold up well. And Android seems to have its own cultists.

I think one of the more interesting hardware releases this year is going to be Microsoft's Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 with the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite ARM CPU. If this Qualcomm chip reaches performance parity with the Intel 14s and offers Apple level battery life these two new boxes could mark the beginning of a sea change in mainstream computing. The rumbles I'm picking up is Microsoft finally has real wind in their sails about making ARM CPUs a co-equal first citizen in their ecosystem and that the Snapdragon X Elite is a snappy piece of silicon. We will find out sometime in the spring to early summer how this plays out.

By the way, mark your TV calendars: Grit (free, over-the-air TV) will air The Outrage (1964), a Rashomon-inspired Western tale, Sunday 1/28 at 8:30 am Central and 9:30 Eastern. This is a B & W flick that retells a kidnapping and rape from three very different perspectives. It has the young William Shatner, Paul Newman as a Mex bandit, Laurence Harvey and Claire Bloom, and Edward G. Robinson too. I haven't seen it in many years and hope it holds up. It was a four-hour miniseries, as I recall, so I hope they will run the second part on Monday. Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, Diane Lane, and Angelica Huston all proved that, at least in 1988, the Western and the miniseries were not only not dead, but could make major fans out of casual, jaded viewers.

The original legislation for temporarily extending the statute of limitations was in order that the Boy Scouts of America could declare a limited bankruptcy and be sued by former Scouts for sexual abuse they endured decades ago. The trial lawyers of America - who stand to receive one-third of the many billions of dollars in fees from the victims - were the driving force in collusion with the BSA who were certain to become 100% bankrupt after a single trial in California. Once that door got opened they're finding innovative ways for targeted abuse. I live in a remote area, not too many houses. I'd better not lock the door to my house. Some poor soul might be driving through here, and have a break down. So, he needs to be able to get in my house and use the phone to call for help. Oh, and he might need some money, so I'll leave a pile of 100 bills on the table. He'll pay me back, of course, if he takes any, and will leave me all the information I need. In fact, I'll leave him my bank account number and routing number here so he can easily pay me back.... Posted by: 13times at January 27, 2024 *** It's odd, but people I know who mention the series or the books usually call the lead characters "Gus" and "Captain Call," not "Gus" and "Woodrow." I'm not a big fan of reading Larry McMurtry. His style is odd -- he often changes point-of-view in the same paragraph, and it makes him hard to follow sometimes. But he tells good stories and creates memorable characters. The scene I often reread is the one where Gus rides down into the middle of Blue Duck's camp, at night, to rescue Lorena from torture and murder. Dynamite stuff. Also, the essential look and feel of MacOS hasn't changed in 40 years. Its biggest change was adding a second mouse button 30 years ago. And at the end of the day the underlying OS is Unix with very pretty windows manager on top. I can also run windows on my Mac for those applications Microsoft refuses to port. The need for speed drove technology. As that part of the Internet shaped improvements more mainstream functions could then step in. E-commerce took off. Chat rooms became web sites and blogs. An entire monograph could be written on how characters in series fiction address each other under different circumstances, and how fans refer to them. Ellery Queen and his father call each other "Ellery" (or "El") and "Dad," for instance. In John Dickson Carr, police superintendent Hadley and Dr. Gideon Fell always call each other by their last names (1930s-1960s English custom, I guess). In contrast, Lawrence Block's Matt Scudder (1970s-present) is always called "Matt" by his friends.

Robert Reich came up on my You Tube list, blathering about how Clarence Thomas has to recuse himself because his wife did something. Was going to respond about Kagan but decided to block it instead.
I got blocked on a FB group for mentioning they should add a few caraway seeds to the starter if sluggish. I got a lecture on how this would introduce mold and you should have laboratory clean conditions for your starter. The internet seems to be full of lunatics these days. This is still 1,500,000 per year. And that is just known encounters. Not the ones CBP pretends not to see.
The White House has agreed to new limits on asylum at the border, including the creation of an expulsion power that would allow migrants who cross the U.S.-Mexico border illegally to be rapidly returned to Mexico if migrant encounters surpassed 4,000 per day, three sources familiar with the matter said. If encounters passed 5,000 per day, the use of the expulsion authority would become mandatory, according to the sources who requested anonymity to discuss details of the private negotiations. So this is the spin? Joe hasn't done anything to lock down the border because he didn't have the authority? Needs a new law?
What’s been negotiated would — if passed into law — be the toughest and fairest set of reforms to secure the border we’ve ever had in our country,” Biden said in a statement. “It would give me, as President, a new emergency authority to shut down the border when it becomes overwhelmed. And if given that authority, I would use it the day I sign the bill into law.” Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy at January 27, 2024 08:56 AM (2ovLw) 168

The ACS is a means by which industrial chemists fund awards to be handed out to academic chemists. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh Back in the day, the ACS had somehow finagled graduate schools into requiring the PhD candidates in Chemistry be capable of reading articles published in German. Residuals props to all the Herr Doktor Professors and all that. Note that I said "capable", and not "fluent". Of course Apple could fix this tomorrow by embracing RCS like the rest of the carriers and phone makers and OS developers - but noooooo that would make them less of a bunch of asshoes and we can't have that.

Biden is lying. He knows that an Oct. 7 type event is likely to happen any day in this country and he wants to be able to point the finger elsewhere, anywhere, except where it should be pointed. The (R)'s need to tell him to STFU and STFD and enforce the laws already on the books. Posted by: Divide by Zero at January 27, 2024 09:01 AM (nIvob) 174

Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley ========================== Times past you could go to tucows and get any iteration of FF you desired, other back issues too. Well, tucows is no more and it seems all the Browser people, and Microsoft have joined hands in the 'no support' areana. 'No support', now means, 'it doesn't exist'. Old Microsoft web pages, say, help links for W7 are wiped out, non-exsistant; old .exe downloads do not work. They make sure you upgrade. You can have what they want you to have and cannot have what they do not want you to have. Posted by: Braenyard at January 27, 2024 09:02 AM (M4QYv) 175

Morning, Horde. Late to this thread, as usual, because time zone.
Question for Pixy and Horde: I bought a new phone last month, a Unihertz Titan Pocket. It is a small smartphone with a real QWERTY keyboard, and it runs Android. I like it right well, except it continually nags me with bleeps and bloops to install Goggle Play, telling me that that the other Goggle apps won't run unless I sign up for Goggle Play. Well, Fuck Them! I don't need any of the the apps for the phone to do what I need it do. None, zilch, nada. And I don't want to be tracked by google. How can I disable the annoying noises? I would like to root the phone, and install Lineage OS, but it seems there is only one guy that a workable method to do that. Phone is a niche phone, and too new for there to be a large community of tech-minded hackers for it, I guess. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at January 27, 2024 10:12 AM (tkR6S) 179
