ONT. ONT Never Changes

Howdy Horde! Welcome to Friday, the memeiest day of the week!

not wrong.jpg

Fido Friday: Brush time!

Tonight's question:

I'm going with .30-06. I like the classics. OK you won't get much if you're hunting squirrels for the pot, and it's a little light for polar bears, but generally speaking, .30-06 gets the job done.

Oh no guys! Look out!

I hope you enjoyed this week's crop of memes and other internet stupidity, in a bit of housekeeping, qdpsteve and sunny-dee tweeted at me this week and asked me to say “hi” for them. So “Hi” from those guys.

22 I'm going with the 30-.06, too, although I know it's only because I've been shooting one my entire life and what I like and have great memories of. I think a case could be made for the .308, especially since it's ballistically similar and not as unpleasant to shoot repeatedly (at least for me).

48 Golf is one of those games where you should at least go and get to where you can hit the ball occasionally. You don't have to be any good at it, but if you get invited out one morning say "I'd love to but I'm terrible" and your friends will insist. You can remind them that you're terrible and still learning but enjoy the sport and spend some time with them.

You may or may not get invited back, but it's a LOT better than being left out that first time. A switch gets flipped when that happens.

I look at the game today and the people playing it and where are they play it like Saudi Arabia, and I could not have less interest. I couldn’t name the last 10 masters champions if you offered me $1 million dollars. I could tell you every masters champion in the 1980s. U.S. Cartridge, caliber .30. Adopted as Official by the U.S. Bureau of Ordnance in the Year of Our Lord, 1906.

It's predecessor was a nearly identical casing, but carrying a round nose, old-style bullet, at a much lower velocity, adopted in 1903.

Thus we learn, that the .30-'03 was the immediate predecessor to the vaunted .30-'06.

There are three ways of naming cartridges
Imperial - which is the caliber in 100ths of an inch
Metric which is the diameter and the case length
30.06 which is the caliber and they year adopted (1906)
the caliber and charge of black powder behind it as in the 45-70.

Oh, and some random number that is close because it is unique and in the same diameter as about 15 other cartridges, like the .307 winchester.

Ha. That reminds me of somewhere in California (Illinois?) trying to ban ARs by passing a bill outlawing rounds larger than .22

Imagine their surprise when they learned about guns.
Posted by: Moron Robbie

New Mexico is getting ready to pass a law banning firearms whose semi auto mechanism is activated by the gas from the round just fired and for extra credit "high capacity" magazines which I am assuming is anything over 5 or 10 rounds. And just like that if you own a legally obtained handgun or rifle that operates in that manner or magazine exceeding the new limit you are a felon. I think there will be a grandfather exception if you register guns with the state.

This is being done to protect the public from being murdered by firearms. The reality is it won't do a damn thing because the criminals obtain their guns illegally already and have no problem killing people. These laws, once again, are intended to disarm the law abiding citizens and unless they comply with these new laws, the state will turn them into felons so they can use the draconian power of the state to compel them to give up their firearms.

276 This is being done to protect the public from being murdered by firearms.

In my younger days, I was amenable to listening to arguments for 'common sense gun control'. Now I am a 2nd Amendment absolutist and no more infringement. They want more laws? Start by enforcing the ones you already have on the books. Going after legal made illegal gun owners is going after legislatively created low hanging fruit. Until you go after the criminals, the robbers, rapists, gangbangers and people in those lines of work who have and trade in illegal firearms, you know, the hard job you're already paid to do, then we'll talk. Talk, no promises. But until then STFU and STFD.

In Eastern and Southern Africa snakes in the golf cup are a real hazard so, after sinking a putt, it is customary to rattle a club or the flagpole in the hole and hope any creepy-crawlies will come out, before 'the putting in of the hand'. Green and Black mambas are the common ones to find in the cup and these are venomous, deadly.

I had (what I thought) was a vexxing routing problem with my network and VPN tunnel between the house here and the network at my mother's.

It'd being driving me crazy for over a week. I had upgraded the versions of OpenWRT running on both routers and I thought it was something do to that.

Nope, it was a silly typo in an IPv6 public prefix mess in a configuration file. I thought the allocated prefix for one router hadn't changed, they were identical after the upgrade.

Well, they weren't. The difference was one 16-bit block, new one was "f570" vs the old one of "5f20". I didn't spot the difference, it looked the same. Something stupid like this was driving me nuts for a week.

I could get in. I was routing both local ipv6 and ip4 traffic over the tunnel. Ip4 was working fine and get in fine. Also, there's this ULA prefix business, "unique local addresses" which I'd set up for Ipv6 local. That was routing fine. The only problem was the "public" Ipv6 addresses weren't routing.

And now they are. All due to silly difference I couldn't see staring at things for over a week.

.300 Savage. Popular with earlier generations, mild recoil.

.300 Winchester Magnum. Still popular today. Notable effect on Elk, Moose, Bear and Splodeydopes, when fired from Special Forces Sniper Rifle. Think .30-'06 on Steroids.

.300 Weatherby Magnum. It's the Magnum Opus of the .300 Magnums. Very fast, high velocity. Flat trajectory. Pronounced, sometimes Objectionable Recoil.

But, the .300 Wby Mag, will also be more often found residing in fancy wood stocks with flourishes of engraving and various (often precious metals) materials inlaid into steel and wood, both.

The history of the Hunting Rifles of Africa would fill up much more than one coffee table's room for books.

410 Meanwhile, in Ukraine:
1. Ukies shot down a Russian cargo plane, to great rejoicing, until they found out it was on its way to return 65 Ukie POWs.
2. Russians continue to apply pressure at a dozen points along the front line, slowly but steadily pushing forward.
3. At the strong point city of Adveedka, Russian soldiers crawled through a literal mile of unguarded storm drain pipe and popped up behind the Ukrainian's first line of defense, getting the Russian troops into the relative safety of the city suburbs.

435 I chatted openly with QDP on audio gear, some of his food discussions, some gun stuff, etc. Friendly conversations. And, something y'all don't know.

The late, great redc14c and I, were both striving to manage to get QDP to the TxMoMeet, including various ideas as to transport, or vehicle convoy or other options. redc14c said he had some email exchanges, trying to find a way, but those went nowhere.

Frankly, QDP wasn't "one" persona, but evolved from a cordial apsie about food and music, to a much more self-insistent presence, especially on the ONTs, to what certain other commenters (and COBs) objected to, in terms of threadjacking and such. And don't forget, QDP was quoted as, in fact, taking delight in making a thread what HE wanted it to be. (i forget the 'ette who quoted him, but that was how she relayed her correspondence with him.)

And then, the TxMoMeet "poker fiasco". A friendly game among morons? Fine. A TOURNAMENT? Not so fine. After that, he hated the sound of my name.

Oh, well. I'll live.

He got hisself banninated, after a rather violent series of verbal (typed) outbursts at (mostly) Nurse, and a couple of COBs.

That, the same day as coming off of a "time out" as levied by either WD or CBD.

I do NOT blame him, if he felt that he had to stand his ground, or such. But, he had so badly ERODED that ground in the weeks leading up to events, that it crumbled, easily.

Food Chattin' and HIGHLY Music Knowledgeable QDP would be, to me, a very welcome re-addition to the ONT. "AGENDA" QDP, just doesn't need to return here, at all.

In WA state, the minimum caliber to hunt big game, including deer, is a .243. Hunt with an AR-15 and get caught, you lose your rifle and get a fine.

Laws on this were made in the early 20th century, long before the AR series existed, I'm guessing they were trying to outlaw .22LR for deer hunting.

Story title, "Inconstant Moon". But, as the title suggests, it was the Moon that flared up in brilliance, not Jupiter. I guess Jupiter would have waxed brighter an hour or so later, though.

I think they did a TV adaptation of "Inconstant Moon", as I remember watching something based on the plot a while back.

Another good scifi one I remember is the story of planet that never knew night. It was a binary system and the planet never saw darkness. But, once in a very long time, a eclipse event would occur, and blot out the smaller star.

The population freaked out seeing the actual night sky for the first time.

482 Well, Bailey the inherited Grand dog crossed the Rainbow Bridge this morning. For the first time in almost 40 years we do not have a dog in our house. Given our ages, we have decided that we will not be getting any more.

The house is eerily quiet, and now we won't have a dog alarm to let us know when someone is at the door. It's very strange. She was our protector, always making sure to put herself between us and anyone that she didn't know.

Well done, good and faithful servant. We know that you are now free from pain, and we are sure that Michelle and Mom and Dad were there to welcome you to your new home, and that Lady and Bandit were waiting to greet you and play with you once again. We will see you again one day. Godspeed.

This reminds me of the "sky island" phenomenon. You high mountain peaks surrounding by desert lowlands which support a vastly different ecosystem.

The gold-hued laser slowly and inexorably makes its way up the slab. Bond is visibly alarmed.

Bond: Goldfinch! Do you expect me to talk?

Goldfinch: (tilts head quizzically) No, Mr. Bond. I expect you to change my ... cage liner.
And my water. At least twice a day.

(IMDB points out that this film features the first appearance of the Texas cliff swallow, or Austin Martin, in the Bond film continuity. Those who liked Goldfinch are encouraged to take a look at The Egret Sanction (1975) and In Like Flamingo (1967). Patrons of IMDB also suggest the BBC's Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sparrow (1979), in which a trail of unaccountable droppings leads George Smiley (Alec Guinness) to a disturbing discovery in an unexpected place.)

I got interested in the geography of this. The Lee Canyon Ski Resort is about 35 miles from Vegas, and sits at the base of Lee Peak, which is part of the Spring Mountains (named after springs that occur there). It's a bit north of Mt. Charleston, the highest peak of the Spring Mountains.

It's an isolated sky island environment. Plant and animal species isolated by the surrounding desert basins. Mt. Charleston's climate data is about a yearly mean temperature of 35F, with Summer peaks in July of highs in the 60s and lows in the high 30s to Winter with highs of the 30s and lows in the teens.

So, just 35 miles (and a bit of climb), and you go from Vegas climate to that.

The peak (or near) of Mt. Charleston is a popular hike. When you get there, you have beautiful views of Vegas, Death Valley, and the Sierra Nevada.

It's a 16 mile hike with a 4000' climb. There are two main trails there. It's apparently an all day hike.
