Scottish historian Neil Oliver gets it. He’s the guy that produced the 10 part history of Scotland. Back then he was probably happily center-left. No longer. He’s a few parts VDH. Sensible, personable, calm, not a firebrand - and an excellent storyteller.

29 the days when a Hugo or Nebula award on a book cover would pique my interest are long, long gone, and are in fact fully inverted.
Yeah, the last time I looked at a book because of that was probably around 1985ish. 1993 was a tie between A Fire Upon the Deep and Doomsday Book, which are both what I would consider classic Hugo winners. As recently as 2011 the winner was Connie Willis's Blackout / All Clear, which is (are) very good. Funnily enough, after a decade of crap, in 2023 the best novel went to Ursula Vernon for Nettle & Bone. I've read several of her books, and while I wouldn't necessarily pick her for a Hugo winner, she doesn't write woke garbage either. Posted by: Pixy Misa at January 26, 2024 04:47 AM (BLOW1) 37

First time I have ever been up and awake for a tech post.
I have a minor in and out surgery this morning. I'm a bit nervous about it but the worst part is Uggg, no coffee allowed. Actually no nothing is allowed. Except for showers. They want lots of showering before I show up. Seems ridiculous so I just took one which I would have done anyway cuz I'm not an animal. Last time I had an outpatient procedure would have been in 93 ish and there was no mention of showering multiple times before I showed up. They must have had some real stinkers show up so they decided to tell you to take multiple showers thinking those that don't shower daily would at least take one. The accident wasn't fun and I would prefer to go other places than the police department, but the clerk was very nice. Anyway, I met a man in his 80's there whose wife had an accident. Fortunately, thanks be to God, she's ok. Anyway, turns out he had gone to seminary and got his doctorate. He didn't end up teaching but he opened a construction business. He had, however written a book about Jesus and Mary. Anyway, he was a really interesting nice man and I'm thankful that I met him. I call that a "God incidence" rather than s coincidence and I plan to get his book

A restaurant owner in Oakland had his establishment broken into by a car ramming the doors and windows. Thousands of dollars damage. And who sends him a bill to put up plywood to cover the hole, the city of Oakland of course. Whats a few more thousand dollars. He would I think like to leave the city, for some reason.

Bidenomics, baby! Just make the numbers look good. Or make them easier for the press to make them look good.
So the next time you read something like this from the imposter in the White House... Today we learned that our economy grew 3.1% last year – all while adding another 2.7 million jobs and with core inflation moving back down towards the pre-pandemic benchmark. That means wages, wealth, and employment are now higher now than they were before the pandemic. https://t.co/SOPzcJn1Of — President Biden (@POTUS) January 25, 2024 ... respond that today we also learned that our debt grew by $2.581 trillion last year. This means that every dollar in GDP growth cost $1.69 in new debt, and also means that every new job cost futures generations of Americans $957,100.48. Oh, and before we forget, a reminder that all US jobs created since 2019... have gone to foreign born workers. Posted by: Cat Ass Trophy at January 26, 2024 07:02 AM (2ovLw) 143

I suspect the 'boomers' removing themselves from the workforce is having a huge effect on businesses. Where I used to see 15 'associates' at Lowe's - most of them with some grey hair, I now see 5 people and no grey hair. The two or three people behind the "Customer Service' counter are now gone. Different zones of the store where you would bump into some employee, they're no longer there. Four cashiers are now replaced by four self-service checkouts with one person overseeing. I just think that people are tapped out financially. The customer parking lot is almost empty on every trip. Posted by: Divide by Zero at January 26, 2024 07:27 AM (nIvob) 175

I wish you and your puppies and Her Majesty well, but the sentence made me laugh. Maybe puppies and that many are meant for younger people, but it was a sad situation and wasn't one you chose. it sounds like you're doing a great job.
