13 On the Harvard stuff, I love this bit
Despite finding false data and manipulated images, Rollins pressed that it doesn't necessarily mean that scientific misconduct occurred, and the institute has not yet made such a determination. The "presence of image discrepancies in a paper is not evidence of an author's intent to deceive," Rollins wrote. "That conclusion can only be drawn after a careful, fact-based examination which is an integral part of our response. Our experience is that errors are often unintentional and do not rise to the level of misconduct."

--
But see, these are not errors. If one pastes parts of other images into the current image then that is an obvious, conscious effort to deceive. There is no other explanation.
If others are finding false data then this is not research but fraud and these are not scientists but are instead charlatans and scientific criminals. Millions and possibly trillions of dollars can and have been wasted pursuing research based on false data. This is almost a shooting offense and in places like China is indeed what happens to some who do practice such deception.

What's taking so long?
1. Someone else has done all the heavy lifting by supplying a list of supposed scientific fraud, including the fine details as to which images have been manipulated and where on the actual image; what data is erroneous.
2. All they have to do is have independent reviewers look at the allegations and data and give a YES MANIPULATED/NO IT'S OK for each allegation.
3. Even ONE manipulation is grounds for retraction of the research paper AND dismissal of the scientist. Relevant granting bodies would then be able to sue for restitution.

What's troubling is that in other instances of these BLOT pasting and copying, is that the original photos are no longer available, somehow lost or destroyed.
Did anyone involved possibly win awards? Imagine a Nobel awarded and then the research is fraudulent!

It was only a matter of time. That act was another in the long train of intolerable encroachments on the individual right to associate - or not associate - as one chooses in a business setting.

Frankly, I can and do discriminate - daily - as a contractor. I refuse to even consider certain jobs or clients, and others I accept but charge more, because I may just not like them.

Any business should be allowed the same. If it was good enough for Covid, its good enough now.

Yesterday, I talked to a 3rd grader, finishing my four part story on the Titanic.

I had mentioned to him the main story, about not ramming the iceberg, not enough lifeboats, women and children first, how the engineers kept the lights on to the end, and the two nearby ships, one of which, in sight of the rockets, did nothing.

I told him that lessons were learned, to this day. Like how one of the ship's rare surviving officers, the Third Officer, near the end of his life, took his boat to Dunkirk to help evacuate the BEF in 1940. He was a hero in others eyes, finally.

And how, when the Stockholm rammed the Andrea Doria, the Ile De France turned around and raced to the rescue. 44 years later, the lessons were learned. And all ships have enough lifeboats.

I don't have an MSI computer, but I built a desktop using a mid-level MSI motherboard and it's been great. They might not be my first choice overall but I wouldn't put them out of the running. Also I like to get extended warranties for laptops, especially on slightly unknown quantities like the MSI question, because it's nice to get two or three years down the road and get all of your money back after some internal problem. I learned my lesson with a Dell back around 2000, and now I get it on everything unless I find a great deal.

Related, check the Acer refurb store on ebay (posted yesterday, coincedentally). The refurbs all have two year warranties included, which is a good deal/savings.

ebay.com/str/acer

There are some good deals on gaming laptops with good video cards. Just glancing I see a 3060 for $900 and a 4070 for $1400, both with the two year warranty.

Good luck
