  • Don't buy HP printers: They're hopelessly insecure piles of garbage, says... HP's CEO? (Ars Technica)

He was trying to argue that if you buy third-party ink cartridges they could contain a virus that could take over your entire network, but you'd have to have delegated your design efforts to middle-schoolers in Myanmar to fuck up that badly.

Or use Node.js. That would do it too.

He's lying. Or at least, I really hope he's lying, because I'm using an HP laptop right now and I don't want it turn burn my house down.

Tech News

  • Palworld is a hit, and it's easy to see why. (The Verge)

In which the article is relatively sane and the comments are a mud-wrestling match of crazy people, none of them weighing less than three hundred pounds.

The argument going on in the article is that one of the 3D models used in the game has very similar proportions to one of the 3D models used in one Pokemon game... Because they're both fucking wolves.

The argument going on in the comments is that Palworld is nothing but a direct ripoff of another game... Though nobody can agree which other game.

  • Oh, and it's now sold 6 million copies with a peak of 1.5 million simultaneous players.

  • Meanwhile Apple may have sold 180,000 units of its Vision Pro high-gloss e-waste device. (Engadget)

Which is and isn't a lot. At a minimum price of $3499 that's a lot of idiots who just set their money on fire. On the other hand, with an estimated 1.2 billion users worldwide, just 0.015% of Apple's customers have shown an interest in the Vision Pro.

I don't think VR goggles are pointless, but consumer-grade VR goggles at $3499 a pop definitely are.

  • A hacker has cloned a Game Boy Advance game by crashing the console at just the right time. (Engadget)

So that instead of playing a single sound from the game's ROM cartridge, it played the entire contents of the 16MB ROM cartridge over the speaker. So all he had to do was record it, spend a couple of days cleaning up the recording, and then more time debugging the issues with the resulting code, and then it booted, albeit with bugs.

Of course, you can also just read the ROM cartridge over a parallel interface in about four seconds, but where's the fun in that.

  • Terraform Labs has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. (Tech Crunch)

At first I thought this was Terraform the Docker management thing, but that's owned by HashiCorp. There is no corporation named "Terraform" associated with the product "Terraform".

No, this is the Terraform associated with the Terra "stablecoin", which imploded in 2022 and took the company's market cap from $40 billion to zero inside of a week.

I'm surprised they still exist. Their former CEO is in jail in Montenegro after fleeing the country, awaiting extradition back to the US.

Disclaimer: Never argue with a man who sells ink by the microliter.

18 The Killer Kittens From Outer Space are calm at the moment. No doubt plotting world domination. Stirling doesn't so much wake me up in the morning as he keeps me from going back to sleep: curling up against me, purring, and if I roll on my back he settles down on my chest for petting and bumps his head against my chin.

Dagny is not as demonstrative. But she naps with me on weekend afternoons sometimes. And yesterday morning, breakfast all over with, she joined me in the bathroom, climbed up to the counter, and settled down while I brushed my teeth. She's an odd little cat.

25 For me, Apple's Vision Pro is a turd. The idea of having to strap on heavy ski goggles to do general computing or media consumption it's about as enticing as the thought of sticking a screwdriver up my ass. I can see where they might be useful for watching porn at city council meeting or learning how to properly bolt a door on a Boeing 737 Max. But watching TV? Oh please. I have a 75-in TV with a lovely sound system attached and after years of using this type of setup I have yet to end up going to a chiropractor to get my neck adjusted. That's something you may have to do after wearing those ski goggles for a few months. As for general computing purposes, really? The battery life on those goggles are atrocious and good luck typing a letter to your probation officer explaining why you missed the last four appointments with those stupid ski goggles. There's a place for this technology but it's way over hyped and most likely it's going to be most useful in commercial use cases.

There's no longer any avoiding it, and they're all megacorps that couldn't care less about anyone or any communities, so you might as well buy based on a coin toss or which CEO has the funniest hair.

My harsh and sarcastic comments aside what Apple has pulled off with the Vision Pro is some remarkable product design and engineering. Compared to the other ski goggles Apple is years ahead of the competition and it's only a version 1 product. My read on what they've accomplished is they've defined ths new computing space in revolutionary way not that different, when you drill down on it, than how the original iPhone changed mobile computing. With that said, I still think it's a niche product at this time that is looking for its proper place in the computing space.

Just take a snapshot and then draw a teensy-tiny little circle around your EV at one specific moment in the day, and you're saving the world.

42 Setting aside the social aspects of Amazon warehouses, if you look at them as test beds for advanced engineering they are remarkable. I have a relative who flies around the country doing integration testing testing for their of their latest wacky engineering ideas for the warehouses. Without saying too much, they're 10 years or more ahead of everybody else. As for working for Amazon, if you're not part of the warehouse human drones, it's a pretty great place to work.

54 Amazon hires older people so they won’t be hit with lawsuits and then they continually load up with increased production demands then when they can’t keep up they are terminated.

That's a distorted view of what goes on. The warehouses hire people of all ages and in general they skew towards people in their twenties and thirties. What is common is the skill set tends to be pretty rudimentary. Given the scale of Amazon's business the jobs on the warehouse floor tend to be very repetitive and highly managed - it's pretty much factory work when you get right down to the nuts of it. It's not a job I would take but then I have specific experience and education that allows me to do other things; a lot of these people don't. Don't misunderstand what I'm saying here. I'm not shilling for Amazon either way, other than to say it's a far more complicated story than usually ends up being bandied around.

This was talked about around six months or so ago when he and illegitimate Gov. Cooper were crowing about it after Biden had first announced the plans to launder the money.

IIRC it's not going to physically connect anyone. $10 or $15 will be used for Obamaphone-level folks' internet bills, which means everyones ISP prices will be increasing by $10-$15 very soon.

I wonder how much it would cost to incentivize the cell phone companies put up 5G towers? I don't understand the economics here but it's got to be less than $5,000 per home. I've been using Verizon's home 5G for about 7 months now and it's an excellent solution. Plus it only cost me $30 a month for the next 3 years. I expect that price will go up. Even if it doubles, it's still a pretty good deal compared to something like Comcast.

Watching UTube reviews it's hard to get any pluses from any of them. I guess it depends on the area.

Spending over 3X more & taking years longer is not a win."

Plus Amazon's getting ready to throw up a satellite network which should help with capacity constraints. The 5G for home offers unlimited data at 300 Mbs down / 30 Mbs up. At the worst location in the house I'm still getting 100 Mbs on a TV. Plus the service seems to be fairly robust as I am a mile away from the tower which is located at the intersection of a highway and an interstate.

I would think a reasonable proxy for how the home internet would work is how a cell phone works on the same network. In my case I get around 500 Mbs on my phone. In Verizon's case you can return the equipment within the first 30 days if it's not working out. I think they charge a $50 return fee for the modem. I'm not saying it's a perfect solution but it is an alternative that under the right conditions can be a great option. At a minimum, it's worth throwing into the mix and see if it's viable.

84 Anyway, morning, 'rons and 'ronettes.

Read a book over the weekend, D.J. Taylor's On Nineteen Eighty-Four: A Biography, which details Orwell's creation of the novel, some of his sources and what he might have been thinking at the time. It's an interesting book (skip the last chapter, "The Post-Truth World," it's the obligatory slam at Trump), and told me a number of things I didn't know (for example, have you ever heard of the novel Swastika Night, where, 700 years after the Nazis have won the war, Hitler is worshipped as a literal god and the 'hero' of the book only doubts when he discovers a photo showing the real Fuhrer?)

On page 80, there's this, from a book review written by Orwell's second wife, Sonia: "Once you have seen through this world you can never become its victim again, but can fight it with the only unanswerable weapon - cynical despair; when you have learned the lesson of the double visions, action and emotion are equally meaningless."

If that isn't the closest description of my own life, I don't know what is.

Anyway, must work. Will talk later.

100 Speaking of HP printers, I recently was asked to help a friend connect up her replacement printer (HP) to her desktop (also HP).

Easy peasy, or so I thought.

Her HP desktop was some sort of office workstation, only 3 - 4 years old. The HP "smart" printer can only be setup and internet connected thru WiFi. Once that is accomplished, a USB connection to the computer/other device can be made.

Welp, her HP workstation destktop had no WiFi card. It was built for networking with an ethernet card / cable.

The two devices were totally incompatible as far as getting them to work with each other.

Such a strange world.

130 Well, we're throwing our HP printer out when the last of the black ink runs out because of this very thing. It won't even let you print without running an insecure web-based utility. Not a network-based utility, but a web-based utility. It reports home on your ink levels. And it bricks the printer if you put in any of those non-HP ink cartridges.

We're going with an Epson for now, though I haven't installed it yet.

BTW, I think HP also cheats you on how much ink it says you have available.

If you are still involved in trying to help get the ethernet printer connected, you can by a "passive switch" which is just a splitter with no smarts on Amazon real cheap and connect it to the printer though the ethernet port on the PC.

If you only print occasionally during the month, say 2 or 3 print jobs of less than 30 sheets total per month, is the laserjet option still economical?

She was buying based on reviews and price, not compatibility with her "workstation" networking pc. The network-enabled printers cost more but may be the way to go for her. I'll give her that option, too. Thanks!

When I was still working offshore the printers we had were HP units, each on about a third larger than a microwave oven. They were absolute workhorses. Then HP stopped supporting them or making the ink and they swapped them out for the shit units where you can only scan one page at a time.

168 I've got a client who still runs invoices on a Okidata dot matrix printer. They have cases of continuous form invoices and fully intend to use those up before switching to something else. 173 My HP inkjet takes two ink cartridges. On black, one color. The 2-pack now costs about as much as the printer did new.

I'm thinking about a ink cartridge refill kit. It's a hack job on the cartridges. I've read that some printers can "sense" a refilled cartridge and reject it.

I've no idea if mine can do this or not. But I do have 2 old cartridges laying about I could mess with. The kits are on Amazon for about $20... less than half what the pair cost me for this thing.

178 Those refill kits just make a mess. I do not recommend. The print head itself is designed to last only so long, and refilling, if successful, makes the cartridge last longer than intended and they can seep and drip and wreck your printer. I've seen it many times.

198 I haven't bought or recommended a HP printer in over 15 years for home use or a small office. I switched to Okidata and some of those with fairly high duty cycles have been going for over 10 years. I also have both a B&W and Color Okidata in our home office. Unfortunately, Okidata has stopped selling them directly in the US. Those printers along with Fujitsu Scansnap scanners are some of the best hardware i have ever purchased, outlasting several desktop and laptop computers.

199 With HP it is not just 3rd party ink. I’ve always bought HP ink or toner. Recently my printer has been showing the message the new ink to cartridge is too”old” and cannot be used. This is usually after I update the firmware. After 25 years I.will never buy another HP Printer as long as they keep doing this.

It’s not the construction or connections, it’s the payout to politicians federal, state, and local. Interrupting the gravy train is a big reason for the bipartisan opposition to Trump’s reelection and silence as he is persecuted in order to keep him out now.

While people are talking cell service, is there anyplace to review service areas and quality? I’m not looking to go to a cell service provider and see the map that tells me they serve the whole country. I’m looking for actual usability review. AT&T “serves” my area, but I mostly get one bar and occasionally dropped to no signal at all. I’d like to switch, but I don’t want to use trial and error looking for better options.
