The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“Out of the $1.3 [million], half a million dollars went to the IRS, and a few hundred thousand dollars went to a home remodel the Lord told us to do," Rev. Eli Regalado

Quote II

“There’s a level of prestige in parts of conservative America with service that has degraded,” A senior army official told Military.com

The joyless scolds of PETA are in the news again. Oh FFS.

The animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants to eliminate the groundhog from Groundhog Day celebrations in Pennsylvania. The group sent a letter to Punxsutawney Groundhog Club's president, Tom Dunkel, asking him to replace the iconic Punxsutawney Phil, who will decide if we will have six more weeks of winter or an early spring, with a giant coin.

"Groundhogs can't make heads or tails of the weather forecast and shouldn't be jostled around by large members of a different species and thrust in front of noisy crowds for a photo op," PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said in a statement. "PETA is urging The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club to send Phil to a reputable sanctuary that will give him the care he needs and not to treat him as a wildlife prop."

Cops Used DNA to Predict a Suspect’s Face—and Tried to Run Facial Recognition on It
Police around the US say they're justified to run DNA-generated 3D models of faces through facial recognition tools to help crack cold cases. Everyone but the cops thinks that’s a bad idea.

In 2017, detectives working a cold case at the East Bay Regional Park District Police Department got an idea, one that might help them finally get a lead on the murder of Maria Jane Weidhofer. Officers had found Weidhofer, dead and sexually assaulted, at Berkeley, California’s Tilden Regional Park in 1990. Nearly 30 years later, the department sent genetic information collected at the crime scene to Parabon NanoLabs—a company that says it can turn DNA into a face.

Parabon NanoLabs ran the suspect’s DNA through its proprietary machine learning model. Soon, it provided the police department with something the detectives had never seen before: the face of a potential suspect, generated using only crime scene evidence.

The image Parabon NanoLabs produced, called a Snapshot Phenotype Report, wasn’t a photograph. It was a 3D rendering that bridges the uncanny valley between reality and science fiction; a representation of how the company’s algorithm predicted a person could look given genetic attributes found in the DNA sample.

Journalist Who Mocked Unvaccinated Tennis Champion Collapses and Dies Suddenly at Australian Open

The contentious questions that swirled around the vaccine mandates of 2021 have merited fresh scrutiny following a journalist’s shocking death at the Australian Open last week.

The journalist in question was Mike Dickson, a veteran tennis reporter for the U.K. Daily Mail. According to People magazine, Dickson had been a sports reporter for 38 years and would have celebrated his 60th birthday this month.

The U.K. Daily Mail noted his passing with an article headlined “Goodbye Mr Wimbledon: Legendary Mail Sport tennis correspondent Mike Dickson dies aged 59.” The report did not include a cause of death.

The Sackler family owners of Purdue Pharma were blamed for the opioid crisis the country faced with Oxycontin. No word if that family, Ronald Reagan, Donald Trump and rascally Republicans are to blame for the latest fad of illegal drugs.

These new synthetic opioids could make fentanyl crisis look like 'the good old days'
When the nitazene crisis debuts, will they finally place the blame on drug prohibition, where it has always belonged?

In 2020, the World Health Organization reported that isotonitazene (which drug users call “iso” or “tony” began appearing in forensic toxicology reports in six European countries, Canada and the United States. In 2022, the Tennessee Department of Health reported that overdose deaths from synthetic opioids classified as nitazeneshave increased fourfold in just two years.

Just recently, the British news media reported that the United Kingdom has experienced a “big influx” of nitazenes. London’s Metropolitan Police seized more than 150,000 nitazene tablets in a single drug haul last fall.

Top ranked dog? No. It is not Nimarata Nikki Randhawa Haley. I blame Hrothgar and his trusty sidekick and companion, ***** (Didn't want to ID the pooch. If Hrothgar wishes to tell us *****'* name that's fine)

The sweet-faced, loveable Labrador Retriever is no longer America’s favorite dog breed. The breed best known for having a heart of gold has been replaced by the smaller, more urban-friendly French Bulldog.

According to the American Kennel Club, for the past 31 years, the Labrador Retriever was America’s favorite dog, but it was eclipsed in 2022 by the Frenchie. The rankings are based on nearly 716,500 dogs newly registered in 2022, of which about 1 in 7 were Frenchies. Around 108,000 French Bulldogs were recorded in the U.S. in 2022, surpassing Labrador Retrievers by over 21,000.

Police Find Drug Suspect Hiding Inside Dryer
Louisiana contortionist, 26, jailed on felony cocaine sale raps

JANUARY 22--A suspected cocaine dealer was found hiding “INSIDE the dryer in the kitchen area” when police Saturday raided a Louisiana residence, according to court filings.

I still recommend military service for some people...mostly aimless, young 18-24 year olds that don't have direction, a job, and live at home. But I wouldn't expect most to make it a career anymore. Make some money, learn some skills, mature a bit, and then do something more productive.

110 I just watched a thing about the kidnap/murder of Adolf Coors III. I learned some details that surprised me.

1.) The audacity of the psychopath. After he murdered another guy, he escaped from prison and went to work at the old Ben Moore paint factory in downtown Denver. One day, this crazy sonofabitch walks in to work, and *tells his coworkers* to watch the news on Sunday because there's gonna be big news, and he's gonna be a millionaire, so this is his last day at work. Unsurprisingly, he was captured in the biggest manhunt since the Lindbergh baby.

2.) The CO justice system was *always* completely bonkers. After his second brutal murder and one prison escape, this time killing one of the state's wealthiest and most widely loved citizens, Corbett was released from prison at the age of 52, after serving only 19 years of a life sentence, for "good behavior." Totally bizarre. You'd think after a lifetime of murder, kidnapping, and prison escape, there couldn't be enough "good behavior."

Someone needs to ask her politely, "What state do you think you can actually defeat Trump in, though? What's your purpose in continuing, if you can't actually get a plurality in any state?"

I suppose her rationale is that she'll be the only lifeboat if Trump is convicted, and The GOP decides to abandon him. Problem is, he'll have locked up the nomination in a week or two.

364 #13 Homegrown food has 5x carbon footprint than commercial grown
Posted by: Skip

Shipping and fertilizer are the only carbon feetprints involved. Carbon already in the "carbon cycle" isn't supposed to count, just the stuff freshly pumped out of the ground.

So I would love to know how the handful of fertilizer I dump on my seeds throughout a year plus the 5 grams of carbon it takes to ship seeds to me in the first place, out-carbons all the commercial fertilizer, all the heavy machinery that makes the commercial crops, and the big trucks that carry it to the store, and my own car driving to the store and back to buy it every week.

Are they assuming all my homegrown food is grown in my basement under grow lamps powered by an out-of-tune diesel generator in my back yard running six months straight?

You're on target - we've been helping off and on in caring for my ninety-year-old father-in-law who broke his leg a week after celebrating the big nine-oh, and we've been more than troubled about the quality of medical care he's been receiving. His doctor cancelled appointments with him on less than a few hours notice four different times, two of those times with he and us learning about it only after we arrived at the clinic. Every time, the doctor put it down to his personal health issues. I'm hearing a lot of similar stories from friends back in our home town.

There's some type of quiet crisis affecting doctors and nurse-practicioners, and I fear it may be something more than post-Covid burn-out.

422 Just spitballing here, maybe the takeover of healthcare by Big Healthcare Inc.?
Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc.

I think that's definitely why our primary care provider decided to hang up his stethoscope last June - Big Healthcare in that instance being the state's Medical School that took over our local hospital and bought out nearly every medical practice in town. It was not a change for the better.

But in other cases, there seems to be something more that we lay-folk aren't privy to that's affecting established practitioners, not the recent graduates. Imported medicos doesn't seem to be a problem in my neck of the woods, yet at least. The East European neurologist that my wife goes to is competent and effective, and the Venezuelan neurosurgeon that brought me back from a life-altering spinal cord injury is the reason I'm walking with full function today, and they're by no means exceptions to the rule from what I've seen locally.

And if they assassinate or otherwise remove Trump's name from the ballot (if he's imprisoned, I think he could win in a landslide) -- Haley doesn't get the nom by default.

Trump's delegates get to select his replacement, and it sure as shit won't be her.

I'm not real keen on this skipping debates crap. Trump wouldn't be where he is without those 2016 debates where he pretty much destroyed everybody, seeming to have only respect for Ben Carson from that group.

Yes, Haley is a very stupid woman, and Trump would likely maul her in a debate, and it would be pretty funny. But there's not a lot of motivation on his part. He won the primaries the day he announced, and she's beneath contempt or even consideration.

For a brief period RDS was seemingly an actual candidate, and not a stump-stupid cumdumpster with zero credibility. If, in Trump's estimation, there was no point in debating him, then Nikki will definitely get bupkis.

It's not a question of whether a debate's beneath Trump or not, it just sets a bad precedent when there are multiple candidates. Even if it's not Bribem but some other Obama placeholder later in the year, it'll be 'too late' for them to have any debates with Trump. Like I said, a bad precedent. Well, whatever happens in the political system, we lose. The government was fully decoupled from the consent of the governed years ago, and elected officials hold no power in it.

That aside, Trump could agree to debate every Republican from Asa to Zeldin, and there'd be no debate with Biden under any circumstances. The Party cannot and will not permit that. It would be a total, unmitigated humiliation that even Hume couldn't attempt to shine up.

533 You know, Texas could booby-trap that razor wire pretty easily. Just make it an element of a current loop (the way many burglar alarms works). Have say a 5-volt source passing about ten mA of current through each span of wire. If the wire is cut, the current flow stops. That closes a relay to send juice to a detonator cap...

Thank you; prayers are very appreciated right now, mostly that she have no pain and pass in peace quickly.

On Monday, Hospice put her on their final protocols before death (she didn't want food or water over the weekend, and now is no longer being fed or hydrated as she's mostly been unconscious since Friday night), and now hospice nurses come by every weekday to check-up on her. I've been giving her the good stuff 4x a day according to their instructions to make sure she's not in pain. I hope she passes peacefully soon, mostly for her sake and also for ours, as watching this play out is painful.
This morning I was reading to her from the Bible while holder her hand and the noises she was making during exhalation quieted down. It could be coincidence, but I believe she could hear me reading to her.

640 Oh, jim in Kali.... how sorrowful indeed

I'm convinced that the dying are aware of goings-on around them.

When Dad was near his end, he was still and unresponsive. I called his girlfriend (who could not be there) and held the phone to his ear while she spoke to him. He reacted, tried to speak although unable, he obviously heard her. He passed a couple of hours later.

It's a hazard (inhalation). Hospice nurses said that at this stage, hydration and food are not needed as her body is shutting down, e.g. she's dying.

Did this with a very close friend of hers. He talked to her via phone (half-way across the country; she wanted to visit and tell him in person she was dying, but declined so fast it wasn't possible). Unfortunately there was no reaction. Only reactions I get now are like this morning, or when I have to move her (definitely not comfortable to her).
