  • What the heck is Broadcom doing with VMWare? (MSN)

After Broadcom - which makes small boring chips in huge volumes - acquired VMWare for $69 billion, it laid off hundreds of staff, cancelled perpetual license in favour of subscriptions, and removed almost all product offerings.

    Why?

As the article explains, it's because Broadcom only wants 600 customers for any of their business units. If you're not in the top 600 for that market, you simply don't exist, and your needs are irrelevant.

The company made $14 billion in profit last year so this approach seems to be working for them.

But if you're the 601st company on their list and reliant on VMWare, you're paying a lot of attention to competitors' products right now.

I've still got VMWare Workstation, an older version, installed under Win10. Say it doesn't work under Win11?

I use Virtualbox most of the time anyway. It's just better all around, I think. Hyper-V is just too much candy for a nickel.

I always install Hyper-V for Win10 and now the Win11 install I'm playing with, but always setup boot menu entries to disable it. For each OS install, I have a Hyper-V and no Hyper-V option.

It would be nice if MS would make it where 3rd party hypervisors could run alongside Hyper-V, but they won't. They could, but they won't.

Well they launched it "to test its systems after an unplanned early landing during its previous flight".

12 >> So VirtualBox is broken under Win11?

I think he meant VMWare was broken under Win 11. I've got Virtualbox installed on this Win 11 Pro install here I'm playing with on my main desktop, and it runs all the VMs I have fine.

If you want to get really crazy, how about virtual machines running under virtual machines, "nested virtualization". I don't think they're there yet, but it may be a working thing.

I think, while logically it will look like you have hypervisors running under hypervisors. That is a VM thinks it can run a hypervisor and run nested VMs, they way to that is the master hypervisor actually runs all the VMs, just makes it look like it's nested.

And that will mean a given VM, at least some parts of the software will have to be aware it's running in the Matrix so to speak, and not real.

There is a difference between emulation and virtualization. I used to run virtual machines for ancient software, including Win 3.x.

That's run into a wall. Modern CPUs are just too damn fast (which invalidates a lot of timing assumption the old '90s software would make), and Intel at least, has changed some of the instruction behavior that old sofware depended on (Windows 3.11 will crash because of some change they made about saving segment registers for a floating point exception, I think).

So, it's time for emulation. 86Box is one I've been playing with. It can emulate all sorts of standard x86 hardware up to a Pentium II (it's a little slow for that).

I've been playing with creating a DOS/Win 3.11/Win9x emulated machine with that.

67 Broadcom seems confused about the difference between selling to end users and selling to device makers. I would guess the market for VMware is in the millions. Some vertical software makers will have regional licensees who deal with all sales to end users while only the licensees have direct contact with the company. One example is a package called Dentrix, which when last I looked was the 800 pound gorilla of dental practice software. It's nearly an OS in of itself.

77 Also, limit drivers to an 80% charge, and require them to drive away within, say, five minutes after the charger has stopped. That might be hard to enforce, but peer pressure can be a powerful incentive.

It is already infuriating at gas pumps when a guy pumps his tank full, THEN walks into the store. Even though he plainly sees cars waiting for the pump. I can't imagine a city charger where stuff is within walking distance. Park your car, start the charger, then leave for an hour or two.

Fox Radio is playing a sound bite where Nikki says, "It comes down to this. Do you want the same old, or do you want something new?" To which we reply, *you* are the same old, and we do want something new: Trump!

176 > You can have ice build up and half a mile away just rain.
___________

We're expecting several days of rain starting tonight and continuing through Thursday. May start out as freezing rain, but (of course) the weather folks just don't know.

It will get rid of the snow and probably lead to flooding like we had in 2020. Never seen so much water around.

Where did that expression originate ?

Arguably the worst battle in WWI was Amiens, which the Brits pronounced "Ay-meens." Veterans who survived the war called it "Bloody A," and bloody was a much dirtier word there than here. As language evolved and coarsened, bloody turned into 'F*ckin' ".

And a 1-800 hotline for gaining ID, as well as transportation to the polls.

201 >you're paying a lot of attention to competitors' products right now

Honest question: which are? I'm admittedly about eight years out of date on this particular niche, but eight years ago there weren't any competitors, really. All I'm aware of are the various Type 2 hypervisors, which simply don't play in the same league, much less the same ballpark.

Given the cost savings that can be realized by bringing stable legacy apps back on-prem from the cloud, I suspect I'm going to have to know this sooner rather than later.

Type 1 hypervisors offer precisely no advantages over Type 2 and have huge disadvantages compared to Type 2, which is why nobody worries about the fact that there haven't been any new Type 1 hypervisors in decades.

For what it's worth, "phoenixnap.com" says that KVM is a Type 1 hypervisor and both of the virtualization solutions that I have used recently (VirtualBox and QEMU) are both just wrappers around KVM.

Posted by: Cybersmythe at January 22, 2024 01:39 PM (iZEhM)

208 I should mention that phoenixnap.com says that Hyper-V is also a Type 1 hypervisor, for those that prefer their solutions to be based on Windows. VirtualBox is only based on KVM under Linux.

209 Broadcom will still sell to you—just indirectly.

You have to buy from a 3rd-party reseller who Broadcom considers their customer.

Happened to us with a different product.
