Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Gun Thread: Third Sunday of 2024 Edition!![]() Fundamentals Show of hands - how many of you went to the range in the last couple of weeks and practiced the fundamentals of marksmanship? I don't mean standing still and vaguely aiming at the center of the target plinking, but really, seriously, focused on the elements of stance, grip mechanics, sight-alignment and trigger squeeze as you were shooting? This doesn't mean you cannot enjoy the process and have fun with your shooting pals, but if you want to improve you need to be thinking while you are shooting. Here's an AMU guy covering the basics in under 3 minutes. Guns of the Horde Well our pal Ed L has been busy with a Colt New Model Army Revolver so take it away Ed L!! ![]() If it's remembered at all today, the Colt New Model Army Revolver is remembered as a failure that set the US Army down the path that culminated in the famous Colt M1911 semiautomatic pistol. But if the New Model Army is a failure, it's a very influential failure. The .38 Long Colt cartridge's ineffectiveness against the Moro tribal warriors is well known. Less well known are some of the New Model Army's other failings. The Colt New Model Army's greatest weakness was not its .38 Long Colt cartridge, but its operating mechanism. Unlike all other Colt revolvers before and since, the New Model Army's cylinder rotates counter-clockwise. As the "hand" that pushes the cylinder wore down with use, the rotation of the cylinder tended to go "out of time." This results in the chamber not completely lining up with the barrel, posing a danger to the user. The direction of the cylinder rotation contributes to the problem. It's also possible to rotate the cylinder clockwise when the operating mechanism is at rest. The Colt New Service reversed the cylinder rotation to clockwise and changed the operating mechanism to lock the cylinder in place when not in use. This basic operating mechanism is largely the same one used on Colt revolvers today. Smith and Wesson (S&W) tried to capitalize on the Colt New Model Army's failure by mating their new .38 Special cartridge with their Model 1899 revolver. Christened the "Military and Police," S&W's proposed it as a replacement for the Colt. Rebuffed by the US Army, S&W went on to develop the .44 Special and the .357 Magnum cartridges in their quest for military contracts. S&W continued developing ever more powerful revolver cartridges through the 20th century, with the .500 Magnum being the most recent entry. S&W had to find a locking method suitable for counter clockwise rotation of the cylinder. The operating mechanism used in the Military and Police revolver's 4th Change Model of 1905 remains mostly unchanged in S&W revolvers today. ![]() This Colt New Model Army revolver is a Model 1901, identified by the markings on the bottom of the butt and the lanyard ring, the principal difference between it and earlier models. The initials "R.A.C" (for Rinaldo A. Carr, US Army Civilian Sub-Inspector) are on the bottom of the wooden grips. His initials also appear on the frame and cylinder, signifying US Army acceptance of revolver and its major parts. Note the patent dates on the top of the barrel. Despite its failings, the Army and Navy dragged Colt New Model Army revolvers out of storage in 1917 at the outbreak of WWI. Some made their way to France in the hands of support units such as engineers, railroad, and signal troops. After WWI, most were sold as surplus. ![]() ![]() The New Model Army can still be found at gun shows and pawn shops today. But it should be treated as either a paperweight or safe queen. It's not safe to shoot with modern commercial ammunition. The problem is that the cylinder can chamber .38 Special and .357 Magnum cartridges and fire both, as shown in the photos (.38 Special is the blue snap cap, .357 Magnum is the dark red snap cap). The .38 Long Colt cartridge generates about 13,000 psi of pressure. The .38 Special generates about 17,500 psi of pressure. .357 Magnum generates about 35,000 psi of pressure. .357 Magnum should NEVER be fired from this revolver. Doing so is likely to be fatal. Note the difference in the thickness of the steel in the top strap of the New Model Army on the right and the 1962 Colt Python on the left. ![]() ![]() ![]() Situational Awareness I am constantly amazed by how oblivious people can seem to be, walking along wearing headphones and checking their phones. The former is used as a wrapper in several good cigars, the latter usually is filler. Drew Estate's Herrera Esteli Brazilian Maduro puts the mata fina on the outside. The result is a nice flavorful maduro. It has a Connecticut broadleaf binder, and Nicaraguan fillers. My example was the Lonsdale Deluxe size (6 X 44). I got mellow sweetish earth flavors, with definite hints of chocolate or cocoa at various points, and some tangy notes as well. I would put it on the milder end of medium-full, in terms of profile. The burn required some touching up, but the draw was easy and perfect. You can find these cigars online in the $7-8 dollar rangeExcellent, rhomboid! Thank you! Cigarpage.com Famous-smoke.com Cigarsdaily.com Neptunecigar.com Smallbatchcigar.com Bobalu Cigar Company Cigarbid.com A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid Anyone have others to include? Finally I can welcome the Gun Thread with something besides guilt about being somehow blocked about resuming my shooting.
Went to the range yesterday with Mrs Splunge, for the first time in maybe 20 years. We had an instructor, to ease us into everything. She was firing her new Glock 43, for the first time. It was the one that fit her hand at the store. Went very well. I was firing my S&W 6906, which I'd had for a long time, but had not fired much, and not for 20 years. It went very very well. The instructor got our grips and stances squared away, and we started ripping through ammo, of which I clearly do not have enough. Not one shot escaped the rubber, vaguely torso-and-head-shaped target, even when we speeded up, and the vast majority were within the large circles, even when we backed up to 15 yards. A successful day at the range, at long last, with many more soon to follow. I had forgotten how much pure joy I get from shooting. No range time, unfortunately. The health situation took a turn for the worse. Fortunately, it's not nearly as bad as what I had before Christmas, but, still annoying as I'd barely gotten back to feeling somewhat like myself. And yeah, missed the thousand yard match yesterday.
That's two matches I've missed due to whatever seasonal colds are out there. Yay me. On the up side, I did find out one of our local ranges has what they call "The Patriot Mile," 1,776 yards. It's now on my list of things to try and accomplish this year. We shall see. Posted by: blake - semi lurker in marginal standing(tT6L1) at January 21, 2024 07:11 PM (tT6L1) 17

Today was a DMV MGC and Mini-Mome. Smaller than usual the winter weather took its toll on attendance.
We set up with an SP5k and EP9 (both dotted) on one lane and handguns on the other - 2 Sig P226s and a Sig P320 from the rental shop. My P226 was recently re-sighted - put on so new X-RAY3s on and removed the dot. The transplant was a success. I was surprised at how well the P320 shot in comparison with the P226s. Now a Legion P320 RXP with a dot is beoming a potential candidate for a new full size shooter. Posted by: blaster at January 21, 2024 07:14 PM (IFNME) 24

Read an article today regarding Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency officers - Before 2022, the TWRA could secretly place trail cams or similar devices on private lands and officers could visit any private lands without permission. These visits or placement of devices were not during investigations of crimes necessarily but rather whenever they chose.
The TWRA was sued and in late '22 the courts held that these such actions were, essentially, warrantless searches and therefore, illegal. Still winding through the appeals process as near as I can figure. No range time this week - way too fooking cold. However, I did redo the vehicle boom stick racks and case. The cigar is resting against the Garand I just fully disassembled and cleaned (I do this rarely, since they don't seem to really need it, and those wise in the ways of the M1 say "lock-up" is key to accuracy, and can degrade over time if you take the receiver out of the stock frequently).
Some funkiness in the disassembly - the op rod would *not* come out of the receiver slot without fairly robust pressure on it down where it is over the barrel. This is a new thing. But function was fine. The first 4 cases fired of the first clip ejected at almost 90 degrees, vs. the 30 degrees (1 to 2 o'clock) that is normal. Odd. What remains a mystery is how the load that has not changed for years, and has long required 13 clicks up for centered elevation on the target, now requires 16 clicks. ??? A mystery that will remain, as I just ran out of 4064 and now will be using TAC for the 30-06 reloads. Posted by: rhomboid at January 21, 2024 07:20 PM (GcNJ2) 38
The Colt Army being able to chamber .38 Special or .357 Mag should remind us of many guns that will chamber, fire, and function with various ammos. Some can also grenade on you. One famous or notorious pistol handling many types of rounds is the Astra 400. These were advertised by Interarms as being capable of digesting about anything 9mm, but things can get dangerous. Really, they are only for 9mm Bergman Bayard or .38 ACP. They will chamber a host of 9mm rounds, fire most, and function in a manner. How long before bad things happen is a guess. If you ever encounter one, examine the frame carefully for any cracks or signs of stress as .38 Super will work in them (for awhile, anyway).

-------- My main problem with a pistol is grip squeeze. Unless I'm concentrating on preventing that I shoot low left. I might be just griping incorrectly. "Show of hands - how many of you went to the range in the last couple of weeks and practiced the fundamentals of marksmanship?"
Actually, my last two range sessions I did just that and it made a difference. After such a long time without shooting I expected the target to look like it had freckles but the results were pretty good. Slow pace, aware of breathing, paying close attention to trigger pull, it all helped. A side benefit is I went through less ammo and with a better outcome. I'm used to a slower pace because of my black powder shooting; trigger discipline is another matter. Big hands make it easy to have my last knuckle on the trigger instead of the pad. But paying attention to that really works. There's a time for casual plinking but I need to get the fundamentals better cemented in place. Posted by: JTB at January 21, 2024 07:23 PM (zudum) 48
To add to Blaster's range report:
i have been considering the P226 as my next purchase so was thrilled to have Blaster's older model and Ed's new MK25 to compare. I was going to rent another but the guy at the range talked me into trying the P320 instead. I shot mediocre with pretty much all three. The MK25 felt the best in my hand but I had trouble with the sighting. I was low. I adjusted and shot okay but felt like i had to aim high. Don;t have that problem with the sight on the Glock. Ed pointed out that the MK25 has night sights so that may have been the difference. Maybe think about a P226 with a red dot. Problem solved! The DMV MGC was a good outing. Thanks to the group. The compare/contrast was helpful. I had good success with the P226 but the P320 was good too. For a newbie, it may be a good entry point - less $$ than the P226. Getting close to just needing to get something and get good on it. We could spend ages evaluating hardware.

Howdy, Horde! Watched "Bullitt" this week for the first time since I originally saw it at the Levy Theater in downtown Enterprise, Alabama as a young sprout. Yeah, the car chase was still awesome, but even more so was the bad guy's choice of weapon. It was that first time seeing one on the screen that ignited my lust for, and a lifelong love of, the Winchester Model 1897 with a short barrel. Yes, there have been great improvements to shotguns over the years, but something about that exposed hammer just expresses the ultimate in Badassery.

Very slow duty day at the range this month. In terms of members or day customers - the USN was emptying brass with gusto on two of the smaller ranges. A destroyer and an LCS crew doing their qualifications.
One of my crew did bring a K31, and I got to shoot it, first time for that platform. Very interesting straight-pull, and funky bolt action. Recoil was not bad at all. I recall about a decade ago when Classic had K31s - real beauties in great shape - in abundance on their website. A group of deer decided to flaunt their protected status by grazing on some winter weeds out at the 200-yd line, just barely off to the right of the last lane. Always amusing. They ambled off before the first shooter was shooting. Posted by: rhomboid at January 21, 2024 07:29 PM (GcNJ2) 59

We hear from the "Armed Attorneys" all the time, and others, advising us how to deal with police, etc. And this is the "Condition Black" I would propose. The event is over (or you have escaped the event), now you need to NOT go immediately to Condition White - which is what most people do, post-adrenalin-dump. Instead, don't let your guard down. Don't do stupid things like pick up the bad guy's gun. Move your firearm to a non-threatening state while maintaining alertness. Look for casualties which you might be able to administer first-aid or direct others to do so. And keep watch over your tongue so you don't give the prosecutor something with which to work against you. Once the post-event part has worked itself out, and you get home, THEN you can go Condition White and let yourself lose control and such. I also really liked what he said about Condition Yellow. It's not a condition of paranoia, but of looking around you and seeing what's going on. Posted by: GWB at January 21, 2024 07:30 PM (32nmx) 64

38, A Ruger Blackhawk in .357 can shoot .38, .357, and even hot loads by less than expert reloaders. I can only vouch for the old ones from say 40 years ago, but those won’t get tripped up by much. I did encounter split cases that locked up the cylinder, but they didn’t harm the gun. These were from overcharged loads and likely casings that were used too many times.

High pressure ammo in low strength guns: Some type of award should go to Federal ammunition, who brought out the 9mm Federal Rimmed several years ago to solve the problem of shooting 9mm Parabellum in revolvers. It was loaded to about 35,000 PSI, to mimic 9mm ballistics. A sizeable production run was made, as they braced for the demand. And then somebody pointed out the new cartridge would fit into ancient .38 S&W top break revolvers of very dubious strength.

27 Read an article today regarding Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency officers - Before 2022, the TWRA could secretly place trail cams or similar devices on private lands and officers could visit any private lands without permission. These visits or placement of devices were not during investigations of crimes necessarily but rather whenever they chose.
The TWRA was sued and in late '22 the courts held that these such actions were, essentially, warrantless searches and therefore, illegal. Still winding through the appeals process as near as I can figure. Posted by: Tonypete at January 21, 2024 07:16 PM (qoGsy) ---- I remember that. I figured if I found such a device on my private property then I would take such device and auction it off or sell it somehow. Hi Mr Weasel!
Yes! I did go to the range yesterday and Yes! I did shoot with focus on sight alignment, breathing and a smooth trigger squeeze. 50 rounds through the Ronin. Then I relaxed and plinked 50 rounds through the Ruger Mark IV for funzies. Thinking I need to do some double action dry fires with the .357 and try to balance a dime on the end of the barrel. Keep your wits about you, horde. Especially if you're a city dweller. Posted by: nurse ratched at January 21, 2024 07:34 PM (5G0pQ) 77

Next time anybody has a face to face with their congresscritter, here's a question. The gubmint finally released quantities of 1911s for sale through the CMP. Now, the Berettas being phased out will probably remain in reserve for many years, as they should. The question is whatever happened to all the revolvers phased out of government service, both by the military and civilian agencies? Did they get the chop saw like the Colt Air Crew models? Are they gathering dust? CMP could sell a lot of USAF Combat Masterpieces if put up for sale. Hell, the FBI was changing handguns like underwear from the 70s to recent days.

Shot the Vz 52/57 and the Vz 58 out to 500 yards on Friday, both in 7.62.x 39. Very windy, left to right about 15-20 mph. Good hits for both out to 300 yards but only a few at 500 for the 58 and none for the 52. Wet berms meant hard to see splashes and couldn't adjust shots due to no see em. I tried holding off right a bit but couldn't see the results. Iron sights only. Trigger for 58 is about 4 pounds while the Vz 52/57 is a surprising 2 pounds.
I can see why the 58 replaced the 52/57 as lighter and handier and more rounds per magazine. Posted by: Hairyback Guy at January 21, 2024 07:37 PM (QGJ7D) 83

80, the 1980s too. You have 48 hours, and Lethal Weapon as examples. I would say revolvers were at least half the cop guns in the 80s. in movie, such as sudden impact and lethal weapon actually had to make a point of saying it’s time to use autos. I think there was more resistance to it than is generally acknowledged.

Didn't get to the range this week because of the weather: snow, ice cold temps and some nasty wind. Good time to stay in and read. I have a number of printouts of articles I've come across over the years. Can't rely on their online access forever.
One is for the Gato Feo number 1. This is a black powder lube based on an old formula from the 1800s. Sheep tallow, canning wax and beeswax put together in a double boiler. It makes an excellent patch lube and BP bullet lube. Easy, cheap and effective is always appealing. A search on Gato Feo #1 will bring up any number of references The second I'll mention is for the hand loaders: "The Load" by Ed Harris. He was given a caddy of Red Dot powder but no longer reloaded shot shells. He worked out a load with Red Dot that worked with cast or jacketed bullets and is good for any 30 caliber rifle cartridge. He used it mostly in old surplus bolt action battle rifles. The loads are meant for 200 yards or less and recoil is light. It will work for 30-06, 308, 30-30, 303 British and others. The article is worth the read. Posted by: JTB at January 21, 2024 07:54 PM (zudum) 106

The Astra 400 is a great pistol and a great piece of firearm history. Mine was made in the 1920's before the Spanish required standard proof marks and is marked "Guernica Espana" on top of the slide which is where Astra was located. The only "proof" is a Mercedes type symbol on the trigger guard. "Astra" crest on top of slide near front sight post. 21,000 range serial number.
9mm Largo is a nice round and the Spanish Army surplus I have fired gives a nice fire ball. The commercial stuff was not as hot. Very accurate pistol, on par with the 1911. Magazines can be quite rare and expensive but what ya gonna do. Excellent reliability. Sights are crap but you get used to them. Posted by: Hairyback Guy at January 21, 2024 08:10 PM (QGJ7D) 132

Posted by: JTB at January 21, 2024 07:23 PM (zudum) I'm going to be the deviant here and say that putting your first pad on the trigger isn't always the right answer. If the gun is small enough, putting the pad on the trigger might actually induce a push left (assuming righties). It's the "pull straight back" part that is important to watch. (And, yes, in most cases, pulling with the joint will cause the pull to not be straight back.) Am I wrong? Posted by: GWB at January 21, 2024 08:12 PM (32nmx) 136

Old GI revolvers: No confirmation, but I think most of them were scrapped. By the time these revolvers were finally replaced by M9 and M11 pistols in the mid 90s and early 00s, they were completely worn out. I personally saw numbers of old S&W Victory models in the hands of aviators of all services as late as 1991 in Gulf War 1. CID agents had Colt Detective Specials into the late 90s. All of these revolvers were very tired when I saw them.

131 There was a batch that came across the pond in the nineties, after surplus sales loosened a bit. They were coming through with a worn Astra box and a spare magazine. I would imagine these were surplused out when the Guardia Civil updated their handgun armory.

Tried a new (to me) cigar.
HC Series Criollo. Size in 7" x 48 churchill. The 48 is lot smaller than the usual 50 and surely enhances the flavor of the wrapper and binder over the filler. Good construction and fairly firm. Little touchups needed. Good flavor and I burned it down to 1/2". Maintained light very well. Not being able to distinguish subleties in flavor I am going to swipe CI dot COM review - "Jam-packed with Honduran and Nicaraguan tobaccos, chewy flavors of leather, nuts, and tobacco generously coat the palate. Still need more encouragement? The HC Criollo received a well-deserved 91 rating noting: “Large and thick, this cigar draws well, though burns a touch unevenly. It’s nutty and woody with a salty, leathery note. Pleasant and consistent with no harshness or acidity.” I found most of HC cigars to be good enough... except the "Blue" barber pole, that one was very... uninspiring... could have been plain label cigarette tobacco. Took long rests to get any flavor out of it, and a second more it would go out. Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at January 21, 2024 08:22 PM (cOq4q) 151

A lot of triggers have some adjustment to them, to account for big hands or long fingers. I was not shooting well with a SpfldArmory 1911 once, and took it to a gunsmith who used to work for CMP to find out what I could do. He said, you know this isn't the right trigger tab don't you? No, I did not know that. Someone had spec'd this pistol with a much shorter trigger, causing my long finger to "crab," bend backward. He just happened to have the right one, a lovely gold toned thing, and he charged me $5 to change it out. My pistol was their National Match model, and the NM trigger is supposed to engage the finger pad much farther forward than a knuckle-grip. That solved my problem.

Posted by: Ed L -------- Clinton Administration ended the practice of selling surplus military firearms to the public so they most likely ended up as scrap by the time that units turned the revolvers in and then got issued Berettas. I'm going to be the deviant here and say that putting your first pad on the trigger isn't always the right answer. If the gun is small enough, putting the pad on the trigger might actually induce a push left (assuming righties). It's the "pull straight back" part that is important to watch. (And, yes, in most cases, pulling with the joint will cause the pull to not be straight back.)
Am I wrong? Posted by: GWB ------ Using the pad is a target shooting technique but supposedly Gaston Glock designed his Glocks to use the pad. Old double action revolver shooters and DA/SA shooters learn that you use the power crease in the first joint to deal with a heavier trigger pull. If your firearm has a heavier trigger pull (or you get issued one that is a no no to alter), use the power crease. Critical to manage heavy trigger pulls and other issues like stacking, etc. That is the reason that bullseye shooters used 1911's as the trigger pull could be adjusted well down safely as to use the pad of the trigger finger. You can shoot single action revolvers similarly but if the revolver is double action, best to learn only one trigger press. Posted by: whig at January 21, 2024 08:33 PM (2RPGb) 170

FWIW, Colt progressively went from the New Army Navy model to the Army Special and then to the Police Positive. Both the Army Special and Police Positive are 'modern' revolvers and Colt ironed out most of the issues of the earlier Army Navy model.
The US Army, while waiting for the 1911 trials to end, issued one last revolver, the Colt New Service as the Model 1909 in 45 Colt. Posted by: whig at January 21, 2024 08:40 PM (2RPGb) Posted by: Weasel at January 21, 2024 08:41 PM (RG6z4) 174

Posted by: Schnorflepuppy --------- Probably about 100-150 to thread for a suppressor with an average stainless steel or chrome moly barrel. A gunsmith has to take their time with it as you want the threads concentric to the bore or bad things can happen when a suppressor is mounted as in baffle strikes. They make rods to check the work to make sure after threading and mounting the suppressor that doesn't happen in the field. Posted by: whig at January 21, 2024 09:52 PM (2RPGb) 264
Lots of hunting rifles are now being produced with threaded barrels. They reduce the "boom" at the muzzle, but if your bullet is supersonic ( more than 1000 feet per second) you still have the "crack" to deal with.

Schnorflepuppy,
I meant to also mention in some cases, easier just to get a replacement barrel that is already threaded. Savage models 110 and 11 with the barrel nut or the new Ruger American models have factory ready barrels threaded correctly that a gunsmith can put in place and headspace check in a matter of minutes after removing the old barrel. Older Remington 700s can be retrofitted using the Remage barrel nut substitution to achieve the same result. Posted by: whig at January 21, 2024 09:57 PM (2RPGb) 275

The M151 "Mutt" jeep was perhaps unfairly maligned, as was the M1 carbine when it was first issued. I heard directly from the guys at the factory museum to avoid it at all costs because its handling was so treacherous. In fact, it had independent suspension, so had a tendency to load up and launch if driven from pavement into soft ground under acceleration, a terrible rollover hazard in combat situations. But, baja racers and modern midgets will do the same, so it's not as if they had a lit fuse or anything. Operated only off-road, as the spec called for, they're probably better than the traditional jeep. The difference was that inexperienced drivers were already used to using live-axle small trucks in bad ground, and it took the US military a generation and some casualties to figure out how to train the operators. During that time, barrack-room engineering gave it a reputation it could never live down.

Too late, too late will be the cry...
But for posterity: Did some range time testing some S&B 230 gr JHP rounds. The ammo has some nice snap and it's accurate. However the nose is a wide dish and lots of pistols will have issues chambering them. So far, only my Ruger SR1911 and my Glock 21 and 30 and 36 could feed the rounds. Even my XD45, one of the gold standards for reliability, had one failure to feed out of each mag of 13. Frustrating. I also had two light primer strikes though they fired the second time. Might be a spring or striker issue. Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards, Buy ammo at January 21, 2024 11:29 PM (xcxpd) Processing 0.05, elapsed 0.0581 seconds. |
