Damned dew point here is now 10F and dropping. It will likely bottom out at 0F or less. Damned dry air. My delicate mucous membranes and supple skin just doesn't like that dry air. Heat the shit up inside the house and the RH goes to nothing. My little humidifier can't keep up. I'd need maybe 3 of them going to keep up. I just did a little experiment. Got a bit ol' pot of water on the stove and brought it to a rolling boil. This is a piss poor inefficient way to get water vapor in the air. To try to maximize water vapor output for heat input, you want to maintain the lowest volume of water you can. Just keep adding a little along. Anyway, doing that, I can max the indoor RH at 53%. No more. And that's sucking over 3kW, I think about 3kW for that "fast boil" burner element wide open. It will be a little less than over time, because even on high, the control is still cycling. Our place is poorly insulated (mobile home) so at times like this when it's really cold hard to keep warm.
The furnace has been running on and off (mostly on) since we went to bed last night. The humidity inside is about 25% but it's around 85% outside. It's also 1 degree now. And the wind's blowing. Posted by: Martini Farmer at January 20, 2024 06:05 AM (Q4IgG) 71

Some of these modern, highly efficient gas furnaces are something else. They have heat exchangers on the combustion gas output that get all the heat out they can. The vent pipe can be PVC! I've seen some of those in winter. The vent output looks like a clothes dryer, pouring out clouds of steam. You could divert some of that into the house for water vapor. But the CO2 is high, and maybe CO. There shouldn't be much, but you wouldn't want to dump that inside, really. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at January 20, 2024 06:12 AM (w6EFb) 75

Our HVAC is a "package" system. Everything's outside. Even the furnace. Supposed to be efficient. Propane heat. Given how poorly insulated this joint is it does a remarkable job during the winter and summer months.
Which reminds me.... propane level was at 25% at the beginning of this Artic blast so I probably need to check that. Posted by: Martini Farmer at January 20, 2024 06:17 AM (Q4IgG) 79
On the other hand, the vent from an electric clothes dryer can be directed inside the house with no hazard, and a huge humidity output. You just put the toe of a damaged nylon stocking over the end of the tube, and CHANGE IT every tie you run it.
Posted by: Way, Way Downriver at January 20, 2024 06:17 AM (zdLoL) 80
There are unvented gas heaters and "fire places". Combustion gas output goes straight inside. Clean burning, with little CO and other nasties lets you do that. There, you will get the benefit of the H20 produced by combustion. But it's a bit "problematic". You can look up the risk vs benefit of unvented gas heaters. RH has it uses, but the best absolute measure of how dry or moist air is the dew point. Dew point gets into the 60F range and higher, and it's getting humid. Dew point drops below 30F and you're getting dry. Below 20F and you're really dry. Dew point is a measure of absolute humidity. The normal units of absolute humidity, either mass of water per volume, or mass ratio to dry air, just don't grok to well for the way we think. It's not obvious what's high or low, unless you're well schooled in it. Using dew point, a temperature value makes much more intuitive sense. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at January 20, 2024 06:26 AM (w6EFb) 86
Sadly, when it's cold like this, there's an uptick in home fires. Back in December there was an Artic blast around Christmas. Two homes in the area burned during that. Both likely due to space heaters or fireplaces gone bad.

Evening (well, it's close to eleven p.m. for Pixy) and morning to all of you!
Dew point, don't point -- reminds me of Do Bees and Don't Bees from Romper Room. No, I don't remember it directly (well, dimly), but I've seen it on retrospectives of early TV. 'Tis right at freezing here, though clear and dry. I guess I won't be washing the car this morning. Coffee with some honey and almond milk to wake up, then breakfast, maybe a pipe, and a shave and shower. And then? Dunno. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 20, 2024 06:44 AM (omVj0) 106
Highest dew point ever recorded on this here Erf was 95F. Temp (dry bulb, which is, just "temperature", but when doing psychrometry, you explicitly state) was 108F. The was some damn place in Saudi Arabia, close to the Persian Gulf. Lots of moisture. The heat index was 178F. A healthy human, a strapping young lad or lass would soon die in those conditions. The human body cools by sweating, evaporative cooling. When it gets too humid, that don't work any more. Body temp will rise above lethal levels. Really, "wet bulb" temp is more applicable than dew point, but there's not much difference. Anyway, wet bulb or dew point (technically a smidge less) of 85F is about the limit of what a healthy human could stand indefinitely. Psychrometry is fascinating. Just having a temperature and absolute humidity number for the air you're in doesn't always tell you how you can expect it to "feel". There was work a while ago i saw on making thermostats have simple up and down buttons with no setpoints or current values... just signals for "I'm hot" and "I'm cold". And then with some fancy control space modeling, you can have the system learn the setpoints and control variables needed to keep the occupant comfortable. I started to make my own Tensor Flow app to do something like this, but abandoned it because there's always more important shit to get done.

I got a crazy idea if you'll indulge me: An Absolute Flat Tax. You pay X% of your income as taxes, some tiny number. If you want to avail yourself of any public services, simply have your documentation that you paid your taxes and you're all good. BUT.... That tax rate also works for negative incomes. If you really took it on the chin, say you're unemployed and living off savings, then you *get paid* that same X% of what you lost. Essentially a form of welfare or assistance, to say "OK, you're screwed. Here's a couple bucks to help you get around and keep looking for work". And same as with income, prove you are reporting your losses and participating in the system, and you can still avail yourself of public services, because you're gonna need all the help you can get.
As long as public services are bare-minimum kind of stuff (public transit, emergency healthcare, etc), it could work. Of course, it wouldn't, because the ratshit uniparty types would define "food water and shelter" to be public services and the whole risk/reward gestalt of this fanciful system would collapse like an undercooked souffle. But there might be the nucleus of a nice idea in there. Posted by: Warai-otoko at January 20, 2024 06:58 AM (9UlRk) 125

taxing consumption is the only equitable way to levy taxes
Posted by: AltonJackson at January 20, 2024 07:04 AM (kQ2Qm) I could possibly see it the other way around. Taxation of income is once-and-done. You made this much, pay this cut. Then do whatever the hell you want with it. Taxation of consumption becomes a cascade of ever increasing acts of theft as most of what is consumed becomes yet another thing that can be once again consumed (i'm thinking of things like the VAT in the UK, and wording it poorly, so i'm going to stop trying now.) Consumption is also more difficult to define. Are we saying X% of every single monetary transaction carries a tax now? That seems way more invasive and confiscatory and thievish than a simple one time income tax. But if not every transaction, where's the limiting principle? What is "consumption" and what isn't? I don't know. I think you're still right just by gut feeling, but there's also some wrinkles there to muse about. Posted by: Warai-otoko at January 20, 2024 07:12 AM (9UlRk) 143

A side note on mice: in the same way that they'll get into your house wiring, they can get into automotive fuseboxes and battery covers. At the time of the year when field mice are looking for a place to hole up, any enclosure inside the car will hold warmth for a while after you've used it. If a mouse gets into a nice warm plastic box, he'll stay for the winter and try to eat whatever is around him. That includes circuit boards, chips, wiring, insulation, connectors. The fact that this may kill the mouse doesn't really help with your problem.

My dear 1st cousin, the retired meteorologist, upon asking, a few years ago, if it was going to snow (this was the winter of 2020-2021, when snow was forecast). His reply was thus: "Well, it might and it might not, and if it does, might be a little, might be a lot." He said that with a straight face. All his decades of meteorological experience and knowledge led to that. It's all stochastic pattern recognition. There is much uncertainty. You can only know what will happen after it happens. But when it does, happen, he can tell you exactly why. But before, it's all probabilities. So, "might and might not" and "could be a little, could be a lot" has mathematical precision....
Posted by: Warai-otoko at January 20, 2024 07:12 AM (9UlRk) --------------------- A simple financial electronic transaction tax of about 0.5% is enough to cover every income stream to every government in the USA. There are trillions of dollars in financial transactions every year on Wall Street and the ultrarich do NOT want that touched. Yes there will be some changes or reductions in financial transactions but I suspect most of the transactions that will disappear are phony baloney milking the system type of stuff that the rich use to squeeze out wealth from the middle class. My school district taxes my property. It taxes every adult over 18 $10 per year just for being alive. My township taxes my property. And my income.
