I'll be working on the comment system this weekend. I don't expect any major interruptions, but if there are any hiccups, that will be the cause.
Mark Zuckerberg has made it is goal to develop AGI - artificial general intelligence - with Meta now joining OpenAI and Google in the race. (The Verge)

What a shame then that none of those companies are actually working on AGI.

They're all putting a lot of effort into LLMs, but going from that to making actual working artificial intelligence is like trying to build houses by practicing caber tossing. With an enormous amount of effort you might eventually produce something vaguely house shaped that somebody could live in, but it's so obviously stupid that nobody would ever try.

Tech News

Microsoft has set 16GB as the minimum memory for AI-enabled Windows PCs. (WCCFTech)

I'd recommend 32GB as the minimum for any Windows PC, unless you're fortunate enough to still be running Windows 7, in which case you can comfortably get away with half that.

The laptop I'm typing this on has 16GB. It's using 40GB. And it's not doing very much.
Leaked benchmarks of Nvidia's upcoming 4070 Ti Super show it just 10% behind the 4080. (Tom's Hardware)

Considering the 4080 was $1199 and the 4070 Ti Super will be $799, that's a good deal. Well, it would be a good deal at $499; at $799 it's as good a deal as you will find right now.
YouTube hasn't made the site worse for adblock users just recently - that is, not in the past week. Recent reports of worsening problems are due to people running multiple ad blockers at once. (Tom's Hardware)

Don't do that unless you know exactly what you are doing. Like running multiple anti-virus programs, it's likely to cause weird problems and slow your computer down.

A couple years ago, we had a pretty good little snow here. I think it was early 2021, just after Miley and I moved into the new house.

There was a chance of snow, and I asked my cousin, the retired meteorologist, if it was going to snow. He said, with a straight face, "Well, it might and it might not. And if it does, could be a little, could be a lot."

That was his best, informed prediction based on his years of experience. Seriously, he didn't realize how that sounded. It's all guesswork, based on pattern recognition of complex systems. He makes guesses, but very educated guesses. But it is still guesswork, and that comes out quite humorously some times.

I've got a thorny, crazy routing problem here. As you can see from my hash change, I upgraded the version of OpenWRT I'm running on my little Linkys routers (wrt3200acm and wrt32X). I've got an OpenVPN tunnel between two routers, one here, and one at my folks' house. This is a LAN to LAN tunnel and lets me remotely manage any computer anywhere.

With the upgrade something changed, and there's a crazy routing problem I can't figure out. The route tables look fine. It's IP6 stuff. It's driving me crazy trying to figure it out. I can't see what's wrong.

Google is about to kill adblockers for Chrome, I was reading. They're updating their "policies" about extensions to make adblockers useless. You can still have them, but the new "policy" will make it impossible for the adblockers to push new updates to keep up with the changes in time.

I'm back from workout and shower, the furry thugs have been fed (though I need to get them more dry food today), and I'm doing the breakfast classic of bacon and eggs. The Smithfield bacon I bought and have almost used up now is thick, something more like ham than bacon. I like them thin strips.

It certainly was a set up. The Metro Police and Secret Service were sitting practically 20ft from the bomb on J6 at the DNC Headquarters. But, it's not common knowledge. Wife said her friends at work were getting money for their kids as their husbands were drawing SS. Told her that's not true, thought they were getting some other benefit. Looked it up on SSA website. Yeah, if you're retired and drawing SS, your minor children can get money too.

So, seeing the illegals being gifted with money by the gov't, I decided I'd better file for the one minor kid and get money before it's all gone.

I suspect they're not consciously trying to make anyone get a lawyer, but that is how the system has been established and evolved. I'm guessing they'd get very little of your money that is rightfully due you for needing help caring for your child (or your adult child needs, however that works), but they get lots of money from the law office and the lawyer and the three paralegals, and the courts need justification for existing, and those workers will pay taxes, too.

My father - who was 85 and who had severe pre-existing lung problems - died on Dec. 7, 2019 from what all his doctors have later agreed was Covid. His death certificate originally said "unknown respiratory virus".

What is important about this is that the virus had already been circulating for nearly 3 months before all the shutdowns and the "stop the spread" nonsense.

More than likely and per lots of direct circumstantial evidence and anecdotal reporting, the virus emerged from the lab sometime in the spring/summer of 2019.
