Colorado do-gooders are on their way to ban mountain lion hunts. That should prove interesting in years to come. Colorado Cancels Spring Mountain Lion Hunt Ahead of Vote to Ban Last week, the Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) Commission made the unanimous decision to cancel the April mountain lion hunting season and further prohibit the use of electronic calls statewide. This move comes in the middle of the current mountain lion season, which runs from November to March. The changes are slated to take effect on March 1 and will affect the units that have an additional April season. It should be noted that the current harvest falls well within the established quotas set by CPW and is not made in reaction to any quotas being met or exceeded. Oh I bet you lost club head speed. Electric vehicles fail at a lower rate than gas-powered cars in the extreme cold, according to a road assistance service in Norway.
Can't fail if you can't drive 'em, Posted by: Gentlemen, this is junta manifest Exactly. Not all statistics lie, but all liars use statistics. So it's a roadside-assistance/tow-truck company's report. 13% of their calls were for EVs, and supposedly 23% of vehicles in Norway are electric. 23% pure battery EVs, or are they counting hybrids? If you can't get out of the garage because your battery won't charge, you don't call a tow truck. If you're smart enough to keep your EV at home when the weather is 40 below, you don't call a tow truck. I think Europe is big on diesel. If you don't keep your diesel warm, it doesn't start in the 40 below, so you call a tow truck. EVs are mostly new. How many calls were for 20+ year old ICE cars? Or even 7 year old ICE cars with..... dead batteries? Posted by: mikeski at January 21, 2024 10:20 PM (DgGvY) 72

“[Trump] has my endorsement because we can’t go back to the old Republican guard of yesteryear -- a repackaged form of warmed-over corporatism -- that Nikki Haley represents. The days of putting Americans last, of kowtowing to large corporations, of caving to woke ideology, are over." FL Gov. Ron DeSantis
- - - - - - - - - - - - I have strong worries about the quarrels between Trump and DeSantis, and how they would continue forward from here. Especially as the commentariat on Instapundit were Never'ers (of either Don or Ron) - claiming they'll sit out, and then one of the other side baiting them. But that quote above is the Un-Endorsement of Haley. And given DeSantis's feud with Disney, he has bonafides against woke corporations. Particularly those that, as Iowahawk described, were gutted by the Woke and are being worn as a skin-suit. And Haley's previous forays into woke areas should be cause for concern. >>nothing has been forced as of now It's being forced behind the scenes, automakers are being fined for producing large displacement engines, which is why V8's are disappearing, being replaced by smaller displacement turbocharged and hybrid engines. As the requirements become more stringent, V6s and Diesels will be on the chopping block. They are going to whittle it down to gutless 4 Bangers and then there will finally be no option other than EVs. It's there plan, nobody voted on it, congress ain't gonna do sh*t about it, so I'm guessing sh*t is going to hit the fan in 2030 when automakers are supposed to stop producing ICE vehicles. I just got rejected after inviting my sister to go maternity clothes shopping with me anytime in the next month. This is a sister whose children I've nannied, babysat, and generally helped raise for over two decades. The unspoken reason is that dog hair triggers her asthma (which is getting steadily worse but she refuses to see a doctor) and JT The Wonder Dog sheds even if we brush and bathe him with hypoallergenic shampoo. None of my siblings, whose children I have also helped out with and would do anything for, have congratulated me on our pregnancy.

I can’t speak for hunting big cats or Rams or whatever. Hunting is a major cultural thing in this country and always has been. Some things if you are not part of, are hard to understand. Look at a Spaniard trying to defend bullfighting to someone from a culture where that is alien.
You rarely hear of people questioning hunting black bears, that has always been a season in a large part of this nation. I’ve yet to see a large group of people say let’s go out to a restaurant and eat bear. I am not saying it is inedible . I’m not saying there are not people that like it but it is not something comparable to venison which is truly liked and enjoyed by lots of people. In fact, in many states, hunters hunt deer and gives them meat to the homeless. I’m not huge on many government agencies at times,, but I would say the fish and wildlife people usually know what they are doing. They issue hunting licenses based on their plans for culling various herds for the long-term benefit. Posted by: Quint at January 21, 2024 11:06 PM (/4p4H) 218

Posted by Quint For what it's worth, a (possibly) interesting tidbit here - my grandfather on Mom's side of the family earned a fairly nice living logging out the remainder of the Piney Woods region when Mississippi still had a sizable black bear population, and on many occasions the work crews chowed down on bear. But now we see how the NPS has been infiltrated at least at the top by leftists. Don’t mix up what I’m saying. I’m just saying to the person who asked why they hunted a certain animal that there’s probably a good reason why it is legal. It’s a free country and is the end. 192 You're right. I haven't and I wasn't aware that was a common occurence in the absence of hunting. Obviously, you'd be worried about pets and kids. Mountain lion attacks on adults are rare, but they do happen as well. I read a study, just one mind you, that looked at mountain lion presence on the outskirts of towns and found that killing older individuals that had establiahed territories nearer to town and that were wizened enough to stay out of it often led to younger animals venturing into town more frequently.
217 I reallt don't understand the culture behind killing an animal that isn't causing harm and that you're not gonna eat and I probably never will, but I think governments ought to leave the resource management to the people using them. 209 Velociraptor? Voters deserve a say in whether we go down the road of Trump and Biden again or we go down a new conservative road. New Hampshire voters will have their say on Tuesday. When I'm president, I will do everything in my power to show them they made the right decision. Posted by: andycanuck (2yu8s) at January 21, 2024 11:22 PM (2yu8s) 248

>>Colorado was red about 10 years ago and now it’s deep blue. It coincides with universal mail-in balloting. Once Donks were able to get control of Washington, Oregon and Colorado, they immediately went to a mail in balloting system, and most of these states have rank choice voting and jungle primary schemes as well. Looks like Alaska is heading that way as well but it's the Alaska GOP that leading the state into this nonsense under the theory of what's good for the Donks could be good for them, except it's going to end up with the Donks controlling that state down the road. So eventually, you will have a solid left block of the country that's in Donk Control. Brilliant GOP, just brilliant. Posted by: Thomas Bender at January 21, 2024 11:25 PM (XV/Pl) 256

Watching Chris Williamson interview Nicholas Eberstadt and one line really stood out to me.
Eberstadt points out that our nominal intellectual elites can't even describe the arguments of the people that disagree with them because they just claim those people are evil and leave it at that. And...as an interesting aside to this I was watching two leftists interview each other trying to understand how conservatives think and while really trying...failing. Here's an easy way for our elites to understand modern conservatives. Pick some issue that isn't political right now. Say...finding kittens cute. Imagine in ten years not only is owning a kitten banned, but anyone claiming they are cute is evil and should be censored. Is that too much? Tens years ago *everyone* believed trannies were crazy and any conservative arguing that they would be the next step for "gay rights" was a conspiracy theorist. 247, people criticized her but Haley was right after Iowa. It was a two person election. Now she’s going to be crushed in New Hampshire and then crushed in South Carolina. The really weird thing is there are some people that think even if Haley somehow won by Democrat interference, that would change something. These people are clueless. They are living in a different world. There is no chance another Republican defeats Trump in the Republican primaries. The more they attack him the stronger he gets that’s just the fact. DeSantis was right to get out early. It was the smart thing to do for Ron DeSantis himself.

281, I do think many people that were new to politics that one vote for Trump in 2016 was all they had to do and then it was up to him. I keep bringing up 2018 because I personally think that was the most important election in the modern era, not 2016, but 2018. That is what doomed ending Obamacare just for one thing and really doomed Trump’s reelection efforts even before corona.

I'm not unhappy about giving him another chance, though I don't expect this to end the downward trend we've been on. >>Ace's principal problem with Trump as GOP nominee has been his concern that Trump would lose. Ace has never been a Never Trump geek. We had a couple of world-class, NT geeks here this afternoon, though, that's for sure.
Ace has hated Trump since the 2016 election. It has nothing to do with electability, he just doesn't like him. Which is fine, we all make our own choices. It was always silly to insist that Ron was the only electable Republican when he has only a small fraction of the base support. Nobody, Republican or Democrat, wins a national election without having base support. The fundamentals are unbeatable for EV s despite all the unelected plotters. The grid would have to be tripled everywhere down to the small town. There isn't the raw materials for the batteries and copper wire. The batteries overload and burn and can't be stopped. There is no way to make battery cells able to work in parallel, one string will always be doing more work and getting charged more. The people behind the cement truck fire in Oz admitted it was one cell that started the thermal runaway. There will soon be a battery fire and many deaths and that will be the end of this useless solution to a totally imaginary problem.

I wasn’t impressed by DeSantis endorsement. I hope I am wrong but I think he’s about to do as much as Hillary did to help Obama in 2008. At the Alfred dinner in 2008 even Bill Clinton laughed when McCain joked about how hard Hillary was going to work to help Obama win.

331 Loss of predators in an ecosystem has a huge influence on the quality of environmental resources via the food chain. It affects life all through the system, which in turn affects people's lives. The tipping point in management is one I can't identify. It seems to me the predators belong there but they should be managed carefully to ensure people's lives are not in danger. I think it's great getting the local ecologists teamed up with the people using the land to get the full picture and best serve the communities needs.

The A gets pronounced differently in English and American English (note I didn't say British English as it is the original and hence the default). It's A with lips drawn out = USA; lips tight, stretched up and down like a fish AH. Bahth and Baath. Methyl as in methyl alcohol: we say meh-thl (almost silent Y); English say Mee-thile. For the last 5 years, wags have called the AFC Championship game "The Arrowhead Invitational."
We'll have to think of a new joke now, but the more things change, the more they remain the same. New venue, same result. The business about Mahomes never having won a playoff game on the road was always silly. The Super Bowls weren't played in KC. Yes, I know the Super Bowls aren't technically Chiefs' road games. But if the team can win 2 Super Bowls away from Arrowhead, ON the road? That's a distinction without a difference. Posted by: KC Wolf (mnw) at January 22, 2024 12:16 AM (NLIak) 359

I’m not going to speak for the boss in any way, shape or form. I did notice we had a similar trajectory in 2016 just like a ton of people here. I started with Rand Paul now he’s beloved, but back, then most questioned him. When he was gone, I went with Ted Cruz like some others. When it became Trump, we supported Trump. that’s how primaries usually work certainly when you have someone like GWB, who abandoned his party and had Cheney, so there was no heir whatsoever. That faux Texan/Wyoming group took their ball and went home. It was wide-open.
I’m not sure I get how supporting someone other than Trump early in a primary in 2016 has anything to do with the last seven years or so. Hello, I’ve told the story several times that I supported McCain in 2000 but of course I voted for Bush. Turns out I was wrong on both counts. I read it. And it doesn't make a lot of sense. I'm not hacking on ace. I've been here for a long time and it's mainly cause I like ace but I don't always agree with him or him me. Trump won over the inevitable Hillary in 2016 when everyone said it was impossible. He also won in 2020 so big they had to obviously steal it. He is by far the most popular Republican candidate in 2024. We are one state into the primary and the only candidate left standing to oppose him is Nikki frigging Haley. His popularity with the base was obvious to anyone who didn't have blinders on months ago. Trump is currently winning the national popular vote over Biden which is huge. He's beating him in every single swing state and not by a little. The only way he loses is through cheating. If the left won't cheat against Ron then they don't fear him so why would I vote for him? 377 Things break down. All anyone can do is push the corruption back aways. If you're lucky and you get basic human decency and intolerance of abuse of power together in one basket, you might pick up enough momentum to put energy back in the system. But you have to be able to control your anger well enough not to misdirect, collectively. I have not seen very much of that here on the web. The Scots lost their country this way.

I know there’s an old joke about Chinese restaurants on Christmas Day, but I experienced that myself just this year doing some deliveries. DeSantis damaged himself in this campaign, but he can make it up by continuing to be awesome in Florida. He has been distracted by the campaign, and I think right now, Abbott is the hot Republican governor right now. You kin could have made moves but it is just not who he is. Even the mainstream media loves Younkin, but he has too much Larry Hogan and him to be Ron DeSantis or Abbott. Nikki Haley is through as a Republican I expect to see her on CNN.

In Africa no one dares go on foot into an area, usually a game park, known to have roaming predators such as hyenas, wild dogs (African wild dog, Lycaon pictus), lions, leopards and cheetahs, without at least one armed person (usually a game warden). Hiking in such areas is usually forbidden so travel is in a vehicle.
I find it odd that here people hike in areas with bears. A colleague's adult daughter was mauled to death by a bear in Europe! Also I would not ever want to face a pack of wolves however well I were armed. MeTV's Sunday to Monday overnight lineup is different from the rest of the week. We get The Fugitive and Mission: Impossible. The Kimble episode is the first one in color, and somehow it doesn't fit the tone of the show. As for M:I, we're into the Phelps stories now, which I remember few specific episodes from. My LaCrosse would look awesome as a coupe: "Buick Presents: Wildcat, by LaCrosse," with a choice of a red, a blue, and a green exterior color, and a choice of white, beige, caramel tan, or matching color for the interior. Sport wheels, a tan top for the convertible, and some brushed aluminum on the dash. All with 300 hp and today's safety, gas mileage, and reliability. Wow!

My first car was bought w/ an inheritance by the future Mrs. Wolfus No. 1, a new metallic green Ford Maverick four-door (ca. $4000) with a matching green fabric-and-vinyl interior. Sunlight and plastics.
Start with the old computers where everything was white plastic and with age, particularly exposure to fluorescents, changed them to a dirty yellow color. Now they are all black. Also the plasticizers evaporate and degrade so the plastic becomes brittle. Door panel in my 2000 Intrepid fell apart at the repair shop when they were fixing my window. They got me a leather replacement (used) at no cost. The vinyl top on the Buick is now hard and no longer leather-like. My first car was a fifteen year old VW. The heat didn't work, which meant I carried an ice scraper inside to keep the windshield clear, but otherwise that car was a tank. Put a hundred pounds of sand over the front wheels, and we could get through everything winter threw at us. The summer was more problematic, as the engine was air cooled. Threw a rod a couple times, but you could replace individual pistons on the engine, which was good. Still, no fun.
