Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition![]() “It’s hard to say if the fact that crime dropped since the permitless carry bill has been enacted,” Sexton responded. “I do know that we can say that it didn’t make things worse.” The study results didn’t come as a surprise to Dean Rieck, also with Buckeye Firearms. “Those who oppose gun rights believe anyone with a gun is a potential murderer,” Rieck said. “But that’s phobia, not fact. The facts show that the vast majority of violent crime is consistently committed by a tiny fraction of the population. Most ordinary people will never commit a crime of any kind.” That's the kicker! Most ordinary people are not criminals. But here is the mouthpiece for the police state that would make the Stasi proud jabbering non sequiturs and selecting incomplete data to make his point. But the data doesn’t tell the full story, the Fraternal Order of Police’s Brian Steel said. “We also had an all-time homicide rate — Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati combined,” Steel said. Researchers only analyzed data from June 2021 to June 2023. Pandemic gun violence was unique and peaked like never before, so it is natural for a decrease, Steel explained. “If crime went down a little bit, I do not classify it as significant,” he said. “I think we have to expand the study a little more, and then see what happens.” I wonder what the data would show if the "gun violence" were separated into two classes...one in which the shooter had prior arrests or convictions for felonies, and one in which he didn't? I'll bet there would be a stark and obvious difference. As the state gun organization representative pointed out, most violent crime is perpetrated by a tiny proportion of society. But...my natural right to self defense against all evil is not dependent on the whims of statistical analysis of violent crime. It is not dependent on government permission. It is not dependent on anything other than my existence as a human being. So any restriction on that right by government is an affront to my humanity, and an intolerable use of government power. ++++ There is an honest way to do this, if you happen to be an honest person. "We have seen a decline in crime since the implementation of constitutional carry, but there are many variables and other changes. There is clearly a correlation, but causation is entirely unknown. Conversely, we also see that there is no correlation between constitutional carry and increased crime since its implementation." But that wouldn't be useful if your goal is to deny people their rights. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at January 18, 2024 11:04 AM (z8vUP) 10

Metaphysically, individualism holds that the person is unique, not a sample of the mass, owing his peculiar composition and his allegiance to his Creator, not his environment. Because of his origin and existence, he is endowed with inalienable rights, which it is the duty of all others to respect, even as it is his duty to respect theirs; among these rights are life, liberty, and property. Following from this premise, society has no warrant for invading these rights, even under the pretext of improving his circumstances; and government can render him no service other than that of protecting him against his fellow man in the enjoyment of these rights.

One interesting factoid is that even in blue cities, murders via firearms (and other means) are overwhelmingly criminal offenders and victims with past criminal histories. From the NIJ
"The overlap between victim and those committing offenses is substantial. For violent crimes such as homicide, most victims have also committed offenses.[4] In Chattanooga, for example, more than half of all shooting victims in 2015 had criminal histories with a violent crime or gun charge.[5] One study found that violent offending increases risk for victimization by 68% in neighborhoods where the street code of violence is strong.[6] Another study found that victims of violence are 55% more likely than non-victims to commit a violent crime.[7]" Plenty more evidence in cities like Chicago, Baltimore, New Orleans, etc. Posted by: whig at January 18, 2024 11:29 AM (gvoQe) 98

I hope (and think) he's smart enough not to make the same mistake as Bolsonaro in Brazil; he needs to put a lot of effort into making sure the Military is run by his people and is on his side when the inevitable counter-coup arises. Bolsonaro never understood that; all Leftists do.

In 1938, Hayden's photo was taken during the annual Gloucester, Massachusetts, Fishermen's Race. It went on the cover of a magazine prompting Paramount Pictures to call and offer a screen test. Hayden did a test in New York with Jeanne Cagney, James Cagney's sister. Hayden:
I was completely lost, ignorant, nervous. But the next thing I knew, Paramount made me a seven-year contract beginning at $250 a week, which was astronomical. I got my lovely old mother and bought a car, and we drove to California... I was so lost then I didn't think to analyze it. I said, 'This is nuts, but, damned, it's pleasant.' We have a Narcan "vending machine" here at the police station. 50 doses. It's free. And needs refilling about 3x a month.
There might be 15K people within a 5 mile radius of the thing. It's been empty, or only partially full a lot recently, so maybe the grant money that was used to put it in is drying up... Posted by: Martini Farmer at January 18, 2024 12:07 PM (Q4IgG) 242

213 I think that in the end, rather than banning Fentanyl, it would be far more effective to ban the manufacture and use of Narcann, the drug that brings the OD'd back to life. Without that, at least we'd be slowly culling the herd.
Posted by: Tom Servo at January 18, 2024 11:45 AM (i9ffA) Agree. Posted by: Dr. Pork Chops & Bacons -------- Social Darwinism is one solution to drug problems but a lot of families with loved ones battling addiction don't see it that way. There is always a cost to whatever public policy is pursued including benign neglect which is what places like Portland have done. Personally, I have no answers to the illegal drug trade--legalization will simply increase deaths and societal dysfunction, prohibition will spur a black market and empower cartels and other criminals, and using the public health approach with free 'safe' drugs via prescription and supervised 'shooting up' doesn't seem to be working either. Lower the barriers to a product that a lot of people want will stimulate consumption of that product whether legal or illegal. Posted by: whig at January 18, 2024 12:09 PM (gvoQe) 249

Local News- Investigation underway after new homeowners find human head in deep freezer
http://tinyurl.com/ym7b49hd We drive right past this house on the way between our place and our daughters' places. A local blogger has gathered a bunch of gossip from neighbors, but I won't link to that site. Rumors of a man and wife and young adult son lived there, man died a couple years ago. The family were described as "hoarders". The woman and son moved out recently and a home "flipper" bought the place and found the head in a plastic bag in the freezer. Other rumors that a few years ago a young girl (daughter?) lived there, but she has not been seen by neighbors for quite some time (?years). Nice town you've got there, Muldoon! Pro Tip: Do NOT do an internet search for "human head found in freezer". The number of hits will daunt you. Posted by: Muldoon at January 18, 2024 12:20 PM (991eG) 253
Reiner's father, Carl Reiner, was a far left champion so Rob was raised to believe these things. He never broke out of his dad's mold and became an independent thinker. He would have been better off being raised by Archie Bunker.

And again, I will ask: why is “gun violence” bad and all other means of violence OK?
Also, if you’re a cop, you forfeit the ability to join a union. Period. And, to be fair, if you take a paycheck funded from taxpayer money, you should NEVER belong to a union. If I had my way anyway. Posted by: Catch Thirty-Thr33 at January 18, 2024 01:34 PM (8sMut) 258

I remember when the left hated CEOs for getting paid anything, much less getting raises, when they were laying off employees who made a fraction of their salary.
Is the left pissed at Bob Iger right now? Posted by: TheJamesMadison, walking with hope in America with Frank Capra at January 18, 2024 11:38 AM (GBKbO) America, increasingly Marxist as it is, would much prefer CEOs get minimum wage. I love the stupid meme “I was taught to respect the janitor as much as the CEO.” In this hate-filled, envious country, I feel sorry for the janitor in that case.
